Eno Sarris: Yeah, right now he only hits against righties when injury forces the manager’s hand. Good news is, lots of injury-riddled outfielders and first basemen on that team, so more Vogt and therefore more Norris. This year. Next year, giddyap.

Eno Sarris: See Gattis is like Peralta. Sure, he was old, but he was old because he dropped out of life for a while. Not because he couldn’t hack it at Double-A and then suddenly started beating up on the young guys out there. The BABIP is a little inflated, I still think Gattis is a .260 hitter with his plate discipline, but the power is real.

Dynasty League with QS and Wins for SPs and Negative Ks for hitters (meaning Hitters have less value then SPs) would you deal Freeman/Russell for Strasburg? In 1st place already.

Eno Sarris: What would be awesome is if you won the league and still had Freeman and Russell. I say no, you can still find pitching. Freeman’s power plus K rate is fairly valuable in your league.

A few 2015 ranking lists have come out recently, and all of them have Kole Calhoun ranked in the top-10 for AL outfielders next season. Is that crazy or are you on board with that idea as well?

Eno Sarris: See this is where you have to be more careful. Calhoun is 26, and played baseball continuously. So he doesn’t have as much upside as some think. Doubt he steals ten bases next year, doubt he hits much more than 20 homers. I guess with a good average, in the AL, okay. But not overall.

Your Chris Young article from weeks ago fascinated me, mostly because Chris Young himself is so different. Do you think his approach can be repeated by other pitchers or something he can uniquely do because of his height?

Eno Sarris: Actually I think Sean Doolittle is doing it a bit. I’m starting to hear CY a bit. I think the league is all low-ball pitchers and hitters. Look at that HR/FB graph — hot zone low and in, right where Doolittle says hitters are trained to ‘drop the bat head on the ball.’ Could more pitchers find success high in the zone? I think so, particularly ones that pitch in pitcher’s parks.

Eno Sarris: Huge to see the jump in power while also cutting Ks. My only question is, is he too big for SS? I think so.

At what point should owners be worried about Oscar Tavares this year? I know long term he is still a top prospect (SSS), but how much longer will the Cardinals put up with his current output?

Eno Sarris: I’d give him another 50-70 plate appearances this year. I think teams generally like to give a guy 100+ before they move on. And I’m not talking long term. Long term, they’ll give him years.

Eno Sarris: Mostly a bunk theory in the numbers. One thing they do is play more often. Stay on the field during a nagging injury, maybe. The numbers say only PA goes up across all contract years.

Eno Sarris: He’s going to give up more homers some day, IMO. The sinker is a good pitch, but it’s not great. And a 45% ground-ball rate is good but not great. Not enough evidence that he’s a true talent 6-8% HR/FB guy.

Eno Sarris: I want Gaus and Stroman. I think they can do something good. Stroman only had 122 innings last year, so he probably has 70-80 innings left. Gausman has maybe 90 left. Good news is they are on competitors, so they more likely to push the innings totals.

ENO! I calculated weekly variance on a weekly basis for all teams in my 10-team points league for Hitters, SP, and RP and found that weekly variance in performance is 4x greater for pitchers than hitters. you’d be proud!!

Is there anything else you can learn about a hitter from ISO, other than his extra base power? High BABIP, etc?

Eno Sarris: There are some elements of speed in there (turning a single into a double), and yes a high ISO can show the power that can help turn outs into hits. But ISO takes like 550 PA to stabilize.

Eno Sarris: I’d trade Gary Sanchez because catchers take forever. Baez and Almora have decently high bust rates, if someone wanted to give me a nice big package of young talent for those guys, I might do it.

Eno Sarris: That’s interesting. A decent sample, too. As much as I think vs Team stuff is stupid, vs league has a little bit of interest from me.

Eno Sarris: We’ve got some access to it. We’re working on an xBABIP that beats the old LD/FB/GB ones, but it’s still year to year under .5, so BABIP remains the big mystery.

Eno Sarris: I think we might be able to curb them a bit, with better warm up and warm down and rest routines. Predicting/projection would have to get too much into the body’s mechanics, and every body is a beautiful snowflake. so, it’ll always be a little tough at least.
