Northsider: How does Commish Sarris punish the Cardinals?

Eno Sarris: Probably draft picks and international money because that’s all that’s really in the commissioner’s purview against teams, right? And some money money I guess.

Thwerve: Tyler Skaggs or Jose De Leon?

Eno Sarris: Skaggs? How many innings does De Leon have? What if he comes up in the pen?

Bork: I can’t of been the only one that thought of something else when I read a headline about Juiced Balls.

Eno Sarris: Well if you juiced then your balls aren’t so that could be a clue it’s about something else.

Greg: How concerned are you about Arrieta?

Eno Sarris: After reflection, I’d actually move him up, and Cueto, past Quintana, so I have him top 12 and I’m not really that concerned.

Jefferson Starship : Will Adalberto Mejia get a chance soon? Watching Matt Cain makes my eyes rain

Eno Sarris: Apparently he’s learned some touch on his change, can throw for swinging strikes and called strikes, and that’s compelling. The Cain thing is so sad really.

Sanjay: Best pickup ahead of the trading deadline: Dahl? Good player playing in Coors with Blackmon/CarGo leaving. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: It’s so obvious it won’t happen. But it’s better than betting on most other prospects.

Bork: Could the flu really derail the Orioles season? This is getting ridiculous.

Eno Sarris: Yeesh and I didn’t even shake their hands at the …. WAIT DOES TRUMBO HAVE THE FLU???

Jimmy: What kind of numbers would Moncada put up right now in the bigs…full season.

Eno Sarris: You want him to calm those Ks before bringing him up, because if you bring him up now, he walks 8%, strikes out 30%, hits .250/.300 and you have to hope the power is real to get him past .400 slugging. Still…. that could be useful on the infield.

Dumpster Fiers: You have Price ranked #11 in the latest rankings. Last start wasn’t pretty, but can we expect ace like numbers moving forward?

Eno Sarris: He’s 3.25 with a K per inning and fewer than two walks since second start in May, I think he can do that.

Eno Sarris: That order. I just doubt that people will give up hauls for relievers not on the Yankees this year. I like Mo but he may only take a few as a fill in.

Otis Redding: In all seriousness, can the blue jays find a 6th starter at the deadline to help delay sanchez’s innings, or are they going to acquire another bat and smash their way to drew hutchison winning games?

Eno Sarris: I think they keep it mellow and pick up a cheap reliever.

Justin: What is the biggest difference between your position at fangraphs and a position working in baseball analytics department of a MLB team?

Eno Sarris: I have to write? Also, I’m not really that great at analytics so.

Joe: Has Mazara’s slow June and July changed your outlook on him?

Eno Sarris: Nope, still madly in love.

ENOberyn Martell: It’s really hard these days to play the matchups with Pineda….

Eno Sarris: Yes. Yes it is.

FGM: Just as I’m ready to move on from Stroman he pitches like he did yesterday. Are we going to see more of this? I can get Price ROS for 4 years of Stroman in a dynasty league.

Eno Sarris: He’s changed things in the stretch, changed his pitching mix, I think I see other mechanical changes. Interesting dude. Depends on how likely you are to win.

Ryan: When you’re interviewing an athlete, are you ever in awe of their combination of good looks and physical prowess? Do you ever have to restrain yourself from booping their nose?

Eno Sarris: Kris Bryant and Kevin Kiermaier’s eyes. KK also told me he can see the signs between the catchers legs which was very impressive. Carlos Correa’s demeanor is amazing. Dude is smart, calm, cool, collected, and mature beyond his years, even as you can sense a strong desire to be the best in the game. Brett Lawrie has a 24-pack.

Wilson Ramos: How many articles will show a table where I am in the top ten of something before I actually get an article written abo me?

Eno Sarris: Wait, nobody has written about Wilson Ramos? That can’t be. The Lasik has been amazing. I think Petriello wrote about him.

Neal Huntington: Im really not sure how the Pirates manage to move anyone to create room for a rotation upgrade. Any idea on who they ship out, what their return will be, and who they try to bring in? I’d like to see Cashner personally.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think they buy. I think they promote from within.

Oz: Could Dipoto get more than a bag of balls for Lind? How about Lee? Something’s gotta give with Vogelbach around now, right?

Eno Sarris: Yeah that’s going to happen soon. I bet he keeps Lee to platoon with Vogelbach and shops Lind. It won’t be a great return, but it might be something.

Chris: What are your expectations for Domingo Santana after he returns from his injury? Still stash worthy in deeper/dynasty leagues?

Eno Sarris: Yeah if you keep more than 15 in a 12+ league, I’d consider him. He’s a great stash for teams that are out of it. He’s really improved his discipline, and hits the ball really hard, all he has to do is get healthy and get some loft. Could easily Marcell Ozuna.

Eno Sarris: I liked Jorge Soler and Marcell Ozuna for the same reasons I like Domingo Santana, so it’s not like this is a lock. But he’s interesting and cheap.

The Man With The Plan: Andrew Benintendi?

Eno Sarris: Yes.

Old Roman Dudes: Can confirm Pliny at Monument! Also know about 2 other stores in the East Bay that carry the old dude, delivery times and day. I hit those stores 4 hours after their delivery last week and they were already sold out. I didn’t make that same mistake this week. I’ll be philosophising come Friday night!

Eno Sarris: Someone stopped me at the farmer’s market once because my child had a Tiny Pliny shirt from Russian River. “Well actually it’s pronounced plinny,” she said. “Okay,” I said.

Eno Sarris: Perhaps engage the Rays and see what they want for a pitcher?

Section 118: Eno! How did Ryon Healy look since his callup?

Eno Sarris: I really like that he’s hitting doubles to oppo center and pulled his homer to pull center. Hits the ball hard. Want to see him take some pitches, but have even seen that at some point.

Josh: Theo and Jed talked about only bringing in an external piece if it is a clear upgrade (so as not to ruffle feathers)… is Mike Montgomery a clear upgrade?

Eno Sarris: yes, but he’s not taking the closer’s role, so it probably doesn’t ruffle many feathers other than T Wood’s.

Louisville Slugger: Hello friendo! Should I worry about Drew Pomeranz?

Eno Sarris: New park certainly won’t help his home run rate. He’s a little predictable. 4s away, 2s in, cutter in, curve away. Fastball hittable. Let’s see another start in Fenway.

Shawn: Is Tyler Naquin for real? Maybe not THIS Tyler Naquin, but a better version than what he was as a prospect?

Eno Sarris: August’s piece was very compelling. I see a change in approach. Regression coming, but maybe this power is more real than I first thought.

Gest: Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in!!! I was done with Eovaldi, now he’s rumored to be interesting to the Pirates – if that were to happen could you talk me out of spot starting him??

Eno Sarris: I’d like to see what this new approach would do in the NL, yes.

The Cincinnati Kid: Better to let AJ Reed work through these struggles at MLB or send down to AAA until he really figures it out?

Eno Sarris: Bet he goes down when Gurriel is ready, and Valbuena plays some first.

dbacksfan: I’m kind of new to baseball. But I’d really like to learn more about some specific pitchers and their tendencies. When I’m watching a pitcher for the first time, what should I look for?

Eno Sarris: Look for what they throw in two-strike counts, that’s their best pitch. Look for what they throw in two-ball, no strike counts. That’s a pitch that they command well, and especially interesting if it’s not a fastball.

Shawn: Saw your haul of NEBCO beers – Coriolis better than G-Bot IMO. Canned for 1st time last week – a true Nelson bomb

Eno Sarris: Overall, I was impressed with my first dabble with New England Beer Co! Sea Hag was fresh and bright and G-Bot was Huge.

Yoan Moncada: What do you make of reports that the Red Sox are planning on keeping me at 2B through the remainder of the 2016 minor league season? Smart move so that I can focus on reducing my strikeouts and hitting LHP? Strange move because it seems to delay the timetable for my call-up to Boston? or Trade-deadline posturing to keep my value as high as possible in an attempt to acquire Chris Sale/Jose Fernandez? I don’t know what to think. Help me, Eno!

Eno Sarris: Keep a guy at the place where he has the most value until right before you need/want him up. Think of Mookie. He didn’t play a ton of OF until they needed him up.

David Wiers: Who was your favorite person to see in Chicago, and why was it me?

Eno Sarris: I see a ton of them eating when I’m in there around 3:30-4, which I think makes good sense. That means they’ve digested most of it but aren’t hungry.

Reginald Denton III: How worried are you about Kershaw now?

Eno Sarris: Obviously, more. But if you parse what Roberts said, he just said surgery is more likely, not necessarily probable. Pitchers, man.

Colin: Did you see Car seat headrest on Friday at p4k? They’re so good!

Eno Sarris: Yes! I liked them very much!

The Cincinnati Kid: The Pirates are 3 games out of the WC currently, doesn’t trading Cutch for a haul now make too much sense?

Eno Sarris: I think they’re trying to build a winning culture, a string of winning, since that’s the only thing that draws people to the park reliably. I say they don’t trade him, they don’t sell or buy that hard, they find a little piece that doesn’t cost that much.

Shawn: Favorite (mostly) single hop beers that feature following hops: Galaxy? Nelson? Citra? Mosaic?

Roger Salkeld: Is Dan Vogelbach better than a league average DH in your opinion? There appears to be some divisiveness about how good the hit tool will be.

Eno Sarris: To me, my question is more about his power. Is it league average or plus? If it’s plus, he’s better than league average at DH.

Robert: The first of my friends becomes a father today. Should I bring over a gift? Not sure what the protocol for this is…

Eno Sarris: The boring thing is a cigar but y’all don’t smoke cigars, bring a nice bomber of something. He’l be drunk off one since he’ll be so tired.

Eno Sarris: Yes, because he just can’t stay on the field. They need him to pitch. He may not command much anyway since he’s a rental.

J.T. Realmuto : How do you like me? Top 15 or Top 10 catcher going forward in dynasty/keeper format?

Eno Sarris: This BA ain’t real but he does remind me a bit (statistically) of a young Russ Martin minus the OBP. I’d hold.

Alex: Do you think the Angels trade Shoemaker? They’d have trouble filling a rotation, but they need to rebuild around Trout and there’s not much of value

Eno Sarris: I just don’t think they sell even though they should.

NYTT: I still look back at your Teheran piece to remind myself that he’s not going to regress a ridiculous amount and is a true #2. Still a great read. If Folty continues his ascent into really good starting pitcher, would the Braves have a good 1-2 punch going forward? Feels like if that happens then any assortment of the 6 or so ML ready pitchers that they have can fill in 3-5, including Wisler who’s going through struggles right now.

Eno Sarris: I think this is probably the thinking that will keep Teheran in Atlanta. They moving into a new park, they want to be less than atrocious by the time the new park shine comes off. To keep people coming.

Stuafoo: What would you do if you were on a desert island and the only thing you had available was a cloning machine that can only make clones of yourself, memories and all? And because I know you’re asking, yes, you can make as many clones as you’d like.

Eno Sarris: I suppose I’d make something like 50 clones and play an endless game of baseball.

Eno Sarris: Maybe an extra 5-10 to brew beer and make sandwiches.

PS: If Eno was the entire Yankees front office, what would your plan be besides “Sell”? Chapman, beltran Miller? More?

Eno Sarris: It’s been forever since they’ve sold. I might not bother with a little trade, I’d really push for bundling Beltran with a reliever for something that would make a Back Page splash.

Joe: Curious as to why Quintana is ranked as high as he is. Above some guys like Lester & Carrasco.

Eno Sarris: His pop-up rate is very nice, so his KPU-BB is top 15. His command is probably top five. I don’t see that much luck in his game, while Carrasco’s not quite as good as he was before. Velo and Ks and swSTR down, and he’s never had good command.

Erik: If baseball was set up so that it made sense for Moncada and similar prospects to be in the majors today and do their development there rather than in the minors (so no worries about service time, etc.) would it be more fun to watch? Would players develop as well or better?

Eno Sarris: I’m not sure they’d develop worse! There are better coaches in the major leagues! The only thing is that confidence would be affected. Confidence matters, and if you have a bad start against MLB competition, it might stunt your growth.

Roger Salkeld: How do you like the Block 15 Sticky Hands? And what is the best “east coast juicy” IPA out there?

Eno Sarris: Haven’t had it. Treehouse King Julius reigns.

Jason Derulo: Jon Heyman just reported that the White Sox could be sellers. Realistically, who would they sell off?

Eno Sarris: Robertson seems obvious.

Eno Sarris: Yes. No idea.

Eno Sarris: I’m going to take the leap at Kepler. Maybe the power is memorex, but he’ll walk a bunch and steal more bases.

Covelli: Who to drop Bud Norris, Paxton, or Cody Reed. I’m intrigued by Reed’s last start event though it was vs. ATL. Maybe I just drop Danny Valencia and keep all 3 on a wait and see basis?

Eno Sarris: Valencia losing time, now a vLHP 1b/DH, and not getting much trade interest.

Von Schloss: How much has poor defense had to do with the Rays pitching struggles?

Eno Sarris: I see inflated home rates, so whatever’s making the ball fly (cough cough the ball cough) is really hurting the Rays staff a ton.

Pete: Do you think rich hill’s blister makes it more likely for sonny gray too get dealt?

Eno Sarris: I don’t think it works like this. I think that all that matters to Beane is the offer he gets for Gray, and I think people are too prone to recency bias to offer up a great package for Gray right now.

Carlos: Would you drop any of Duffy, Bauer, or Eickhoff for Mengden in a 12-team dynasty? How about for Skaggs?

Eno Sarris: Nope.

Then he said that because there are so many pitchers right now with electric stuff, command is at a low league-wide. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: I agree but I haven’t been able to demonstrate it. Heart percentage is steady, at least.

Eno Sarris: McCarthy.

greg: Would the Reds be wise to trade Desclafani or should he be part of their future?

Eric: Baseball America recently ranked Turner higher than Swanson and Bregman. Can you please help me explain what I’m missing on Turner?

Eno Sarris: Speed tool is a hell of a drug.

Eric: What young INF prospect do you feel most confident will “break out” or become the most valuable fantasy contributor: Russell, Turner or Swanson?

Eno Sarris: I’m still all in on Russell. Hope it’s not the eyes.

Art Vandelay: I’ve been to a couple Rivercats games this year, and man does the 20 second pitch clock make the games fly. How long until that makes the jump to the majors? Seems like it should be a no-brainer.

Eno Sarris: If that was the feeling of most of the people in the stadium, I bet it’s coming real soon. We already have clocks for so many other things.

Jonny boy: I’ve read the articles but still can’t really figure it out. What did Paxton do to see such a massive MPH increase?

Eno Sarris: Changed his arm slot. More natural now.

E: Manfred said they are looking at limiting the number of relievers used per game. Yay or nay? What do you think the number would be and what kind of exceptions would there be?

Eno Sarris: I’d rather they just changed the September rules. I mean, is there a big difference across baseball? Teams have either 12 or 13 pitchers. If you had to declare five or six relievers, you’d just sit the guy that wasn’t available anyway, due to usage. What a silly idea.

Dave Kerwin: Call back to your article re: the slider moving differently based on where it’s thrown… Is this the “back-up slider”? Every hear pitchers talk of using this as a distinct pitch?

Eno Sarris: I think the backup slider is a hanging slider that works just because they didn’t expect it, but I’ve been wrong about old timey stuff before. The righty on righty inside breaking ball is usually called a front door breaking ball because it looks like a ball and drops into the zone.

BlueJayGord: Big fan of your work Eno, I know you and Paul just talked about him on the podcast but what should I be trying to get for Aaron Sanchez right now? Is Lackey a reasonable ask? Buy low on McCutchen? Any thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Sanchez+waiver is probably > Lackey. But I’d take Cutch for sure.

Dan: I’m in San Diego for a few days, help me Brewbi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope (Nerd stuff, bc ComicCon). Where/what brews should I quest to find?

Eno Sarris: Modern Times tasting room in North Park plus Hamilton’s. Monkey Paw closer to downtown. Neighborhood walking distance from convention center, great food, better list.

Mikey: You’re familiar with so-called economic leading indicators, I’m sure. So what would you say are the baseball player performance leading indicators for pitching & hitting?

Eno Sarris: Pitching: velocity, pitching mix change, movement change, location on rubber.

Eno Sarris: Hitting: exit velocity, launch angle (GB/FB), fastball% and zone%.

You’ve said that generally swinging strike rate correlates about twice as strongly with ERA, SIERA, xFIP as does groundball rate, but that it varies some according to pitch. D-Nice: Robbie Ray or Foltynewicz ROS? Both have looked good since the break but Ray could be a game changer with the K rate

Eno Sarris: By K-BB, Ray is great. I like him. But I can’t move him up a ton because he still doesn’t have a third pitch.

Eno Sarris: There’s usually a good one in your local market. KC has Bier Station, here we have Brotzeit Lokal. And there’s Koestritzer Schwarzbier, Pinkus UrPils and Weihenstephaner in your local beer market usually.

Eno Sarris: Yeah I’ve been wrong on him. Contact rate still makes me nervous, but a young infielder righty Josh Hamilton seems possible. And that’s pretty awesome actually.

Eno Sarris: He’s been a 3.4/8k9/1.2 whip guy since he started throwing the slider again. That’s who I think he is.

Eno Sarris: They said it would take him about three weeks to come up.

Shawn: Are all ABVs the same? Feel like sometimes I’ll drink a DIPA and be fine and then other times I’ll drink a different, but same ABV DIPA and be floored. Eating pretty much same too

Eno Sarris: Yeah it’s about relativity/context. The malt and other tastes can hide the alcohol. Sometimes well, sometimes poorly.

Borkwife: What can I expect to get back in a trade for Bork?

Eno Sarris: Bag o balls.

Ken: A while back you mentioned that K-BB%, Sw-St% and F-St% were stats that you first turn to when evaluating pitchers. I’ve put together a spreadsheet to follow that stuff for waiver-level pitchers I might want to grab, and I’ve noticed that F-St% doesn’t really appear to correlate well w/ performance stats (ERA, FIP, SIERA, etc). Obviously getting ahead in the count is good, but what have you seen that makes it so important for your evaluation?

Eno Sarris: It’s ahead of BB%, I use it more to see if a guy is out of whack with past F-strikes, to consider if that’s something he can easily change.

Stephen: When folks ask for Portland beer recs, you generally send them to Cascade for sours or to Bend for Crux and Boneyard. This is fine advice, but I would add Breakside (Portland) and Fort George (Astoria) to this list. Both difficult to find outside of the PNW.

Eno Sarris: yes, and they amazing. Breakside has one IPA that I drink in Hawaii all the time, strangely.

2-D: If you were in a band what would be your role?

Eno Sarris: Cowbell.
