Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 7/25/13
11:47 |
: woof. Had some connection issues. here in fifteen minutes.
|
12:01 |
I was reading ingredients, |
12:01 |
If the Blue Jays decide to trade away Josh Johnson prior to the trade deadline, what kind of package could they receive? Which teams do you think would be interested? |
12:03 |
: Not a great package, not like a Carlos Danger package. But I can’t imagine an AL team wants in right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t bet on it, even with a team that’s forward-looking, his stats right now are not something you really want…
|
12:03 |
Anthony Rendon played SS yesterday. If he gets eligibility there, about where would you rank him? Would you rate him +/- Nick Franklin? |
12:03 |
: Desmond back in today, but… I don’t think it will happen. If it did. Huh, Franklin has more SB upside, Rendon maybe more BA… I would still like Franklin, but it’s around there.
|
12:03 |
Better ROS: Delmon or Francoeur? |
12:04 |
: Needle in the eye.
|
12:04 |
What should I do this week, Eno? Who would be the best fit for my Buccos? |
12:04 |
: Looked through the team a little bit. Maybe Alexei Ramirez? That wouldn’t be crazy actually. Also, maybe a starter?
|
12:04 |
When constructing a minors roster, would you prefer to have players with high upside and low floor or lower upside and high floor? |
12:05 |
: In real life, I’ll go for upside early in the draft, and then near that signability moment (I forget what round it’s in), go after high-floor college people. In fantasy? Upside is all I care about. Nobody wants a usable piece.
|
12:05 |
Eno! Welcome back! Cameron won’t respond to me – do you know how far back DRS is reliable? Can I look at 2001-2010 DRS numbers and feel pretty good about them? |
12:05 |
: We’ve been getting BIS information since 2002, so that’s a good spot to start.
|
12:05 |
Enoooooooooooo! How did you like Chicago? What was the best beer you tried? I had a Ninja vs Unicorn from Pipeworks, I think I’m in love. |
12:06 |
: I’m so broken. Wow. It was crazy. I had some Veritas, a Belgian Stout (rare!) from the brewpub at Goose Island, and I had some Daisy Cutter IPA from half acre. those were highilghts.
|
12:06 |
Dayton Moore has made Ervin Santana ‘available.’ Did he do this after Garza was traded because he knew it would keep Santana’s price high? Or is that giving him way too much credit for being aware of his surroundings? |
12:07 |
: I can’t get in that man’s head.
|
12:07 |
4 man keeper league, I have Trout, Harper, Yads, Rizzo, Harvey. Is it worth keeping Harvey? Or are pitchers too risky? If I keep him should I do Yads or Rizz? |
12:07 |
: Oh man. IN a keep four I would almost never keep a pitcher. But I love Harvey. And he’s young. I think you gotta keep him.
|
12:08 |
I traded Aroldis Chapman for Zunino and Jesus Montero in my dynasty league. Will I come to regret this deal? |
12:08 |
: Zunino still has a chance. I think you might.
|
12:08 |
Do you trust good Liriano to stick around all year? |
12:08 |
: Yes.
|
12:08 |
Also, I threw out my back playing softball. I need ludes. |
12:08 |
Eno! Eno! Pick my question! Eno over here! |
12:08 |
Kemp has been a total bust. Then I see how he got hurt, and my blood boils. That was just laziness, pathetic! |
12:08 |
: Emotional Interlude.
|
12:08 |
Why can’t baseball start some sort of service clock as soon a prospect signs, adjust it so it’s about the same amount of control years, and then be able to call guys up without financial worries. Seems like it would be better for everyone involved, including fans who would get to see better players at the major league level earlier. |
12:08 |
: That sounds too reasonable.
|
12:09 |
Are you buying awesome, MVP caliber Hanley to stick around all year and next season? |
12:09 |
: Health looks like it’s starting to be an issue. Maybe “awesome when in.”
|
12:09 |
If you’re the Mets, who are you targeting this offseason? |
12:09 |
: Ellsbury might be a real nice get for them. The centerfielders they have can’t hit, and they need outfielders no matter what.
|
12:09 |
My Strasburg and Upton for his Miguel Cabererrera |
12:10 |
: You get best playerererer.
|
12:10 |
Is jered weaver for real or is it sell high time |
12:10 |
: I think he can manage to be good the rest of this season, but if you’re not in competition and in a keeper league, this week is a good time to look to see what you can get.
|
12:10 |
People should stop comparing PED guys like Braun/A-Rod to Pete Rose because it’s a stupid comparison, right? |
12:11 |
: But I don’t think the greenie/segregation question is as stupid. What we are talking about is an unfair playing field. Rose seems irrelevant to that question.
|
12:11 |
Am I being massively overhyped coming off TJ? I’ve struggled mightly with control during my rehab stint. Seems like I will have a second half ala Adam Wainwright last year. |
12:12 |
: I would suggest that people that have liberal DL rules leave him on the DL as long as possible to see what he does in the big leagues. Even if it means waiting on other moves while your roster is frozen.
|
12:12 |
Who’s not a closer now that will be in a week? |
12:13 |
: Pedro Strop? Brian Wilson? AJ Ramos?
|
12:13 |
Hudson… OUCH |
12:13 |
: Napoleon Kauffman and Sid Vicious were worse, but Hudson made me think of them.
|
12:14 |
Keeper league, which side do you want (keeper round doesn’t inflate or have a limit on time to keep a player) — Mike Trout (14th rd) for Justin Upton (10th rd) and David Price (16th). |
12:14 |
: TROUT
|
12:14 |
Waiver wire games. Eaton or Yelich? H2H weekly points league. |
12:14 |
: Yelich might have more across the board goodness upside, but I’m not sure he’s totally ready.
|
12:15 |
Harper was benched yesterday, has been AWFUL since his return. Time to bench him for someone like Heyward or Upton? |
12:15 |
: You have a crazy team. I don’t know how to answer this. Maybe use platoon/handedness and pitcher matchups to decide.
|
12:15 |
A hustler’s work is never through |
12:15 |
Back from England. Got to try all kinds of “real ales”. Even visted a few breweries and had pint made in a “Yorkshire square”. |
12:15 |
Pip,pip Eno! |
12:15 |
batman |
12:16 |
: That interlude was all over the place.
|
12:16 |
In a dynasty league with a costly but tempting trade offer on the table from another owner. The offer: Matt Harvey & Jose Fernandez for Manny Machado, Archie Bradley and Taijuan Walker. What’s your opinion? |
12:17 |
: Been talking with friends about Manny Machado for a while. Right now I think he’s a true talent .275 20/15 guy. But peak is the question. Is he .300/30/10 peak? Or does he not have that power? Can he figure out the IFFBs? If he’s a .280/20/5 guy (he’s not stealing at a good percentage right now and never was a volume guy), then I’d take Harvey risk and all.
|
12:17 |
Traded GIO for Martin Prado, Arroyo, and Rajai… happy so far this week but might come back to bite me no? |
12:18 |
: Rajai is probably a corner outfielder with the glove, and a wrong-side platoon guy with the bat, but if he keeps getting PT, the trade is okay.
|
12:18 |
Hefner or Gee ROS? |
12:18 |
: Gee. His changeup is the only real plus pitch in the bunch.
|
12:18 |
BOOM!! have you had 3 Floyds Apocalypse Cow yet? that’s a tasty beverage. Who do you like long term between Arenado and Rendon? Similar projections? |
12:19 |
: Missed out on cow barely a couple places. Upset. Still like Arenado long term because of home park boost.
|
12:19 |
wolverines |
12:19 |
Can Jarred Cosart be this year’s version of Matt Harvey in 2012? Per 100 ip in AAA their peripheral’s are pretty similar, except that cosart’s k/9 is slighty lower and his bb/9 were slightly higher. Cosart’s HR/9, FIP and ERA were all better than Harvey’s in AAA. |
12:19 |
: I’m way more worried about Cosart’s control then I was about Harvey’s. (and I was a little worried)
|
12:20 |
Kyle Seager: underrated, or woefully underrated? It doesn’t even feel like he’s a blip on the 3rd base radar of most folks |
12:20 |
: Definitely a top twelver. Probably a top-tenner. But the position is actually pretty tough, as in, there are a lot of good three-Bs.
|
12:20 |
Which Matt Moore is the actual Matt Moore? |
12:20 |
: The one that strikes out a ton and walks a ton, sadly.
|
12:21 |
Thought the chatters would enjoy these: http://beerlabelsinmotion.tumblr.com/ |
12:21 |
Eno, what’re you thoughts on some disappointing players like Miguel Montero, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro…time to accept their current level of output and cut ties if better options are available? |
12:22 |
: I still like Chase Headley. And I think Starlin Castro will have better seasons, given his age. For this season, I’ll still keep those guys around. Problem with Montero is I think he can go .260 with 15 home run power, which describes every catcher after about #8 on the rankings.
|
12:22 |
I tried the Elysian peppercorn saison my 1st saison pretty tasty have you tried it yet? In your infinite fantasy wisdom what will happen to Cruz if anything this seas? |
12:23 |
: I immediately traded Bartolo Colon when the Braun thing happened. I think that was a game-changer. Mostly because the MLBPA was involved. I thought they would dig their heels in and defend all of them, but now it looks like they won’t. Players might appeal to make another month of money, but you’ll be missing some of these players in the last month of the season at least.
|
12:23 |
The NL East is an unhappy place. |
12:23 |
Missed connections: you |
12:23 |
Tim Hudson, man. *body shakes* *vomits* *cries* |
12:24 |
: Dudes need more ludes cause that was sad.
|
12:24 |
On saves and steals you mentioned the Marlins were starting up the arbitration clocks for Yelich and Marisnick. Aren’t we well past the Super Two? |
12:24 |
: Sure, for this year. But the clock just starts running. Mostly the point is, I doubt they are ready.
|
12:24 |
deep league waiver wire, Nate Eovaldi or Garret Richards (aka Gary Dicks, as the kids call him)? any long term value to either guy? |
12:25 |
: Eovaldi still doesn’t have a third pitch (actually Gary Dicks doesn’t either). But he’s in the NL, his velocity is looking nice, and he’s the one I might gamble on.
|
12:25 |
Reports coming out that the Red Sox are looking hard at Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. What is your take on him? In terms of talent, it he as good/better/not as good as Jake Peavy right now, who the Sox are also linked to? |
12:26 |
: I absolutely don’t think so. I’ll have to watch him again, but wasn’t impressed, and the peripherals are not that great.
|
12:26 |
Where do the Braves go from here with the rotation? Is Wood/Beachy enough to fill in for Maholm/Hudson or do they try to acquire someone from the outside? |
12:26 |
: I think they’ll try it with the two young guys, since their upside is fairly considerable. They might be able to pull a waiver deal for a Phillies pitcher in August if they think the young guys aren’t working out.
|
12:26 |
I need to play in a more advanced league. I have one league mate who is telling me, in all serious-ness, that Wil Myers IS better than Trout and Miggy and will be the face of baseball and the better than both next year. |
12:27 |
: Oh what it is to have a nice BABIP.
|
12:27 |
so is Wil Myers living up to your expectations, exceeding them, or falling short? I didn’t see the SB’s coming. |
12:28 |
: He’s exceeding them in BABIP, but he’s striking out 25% of the time, which is what I figured. I think he’ll walk some more. I think the steals are just a young man thing and he’ll settle into Swisher-esque territory. Maybe more if he can manage plus BABIPs, but that takes forever to be able to say definitively, if ever.
|
12:28 |
Wheeler or Cole ROS? Cole throws more strikes, has a better era, but Wheeler misses a few more bats. |
12:28 |
: I don’t get why Cole’s arsenal is not producing more swinging strikes. I’ll take him just because it looks like it should get Ks.
|
12:29 |
Band name — nothing derogatory or bigoted in case you’re not familiar. *Also — no Alexei Ramirez!!! Jordy Mercer is 27 and matching his numbers. And get Kenny Williams out of Altoona and away from Gregory Polanco! |
12:29 |
: Well, I certainly don’t want them to spend Polanco on Alexei, so I mean, ‘if cheap.”
|
12:29 |
Sadly looking at next year, keeper league, Profar or Bogaerts, secondly Yelich or Heyward? |
12:30 |
: Thinking Profar more likely to end up on MI, and I’ll still take Heyward.
|
12:30 |
Did you make it to Local Option in Chicago? Do you agree with Cameron that trade deadline should be pushed back? This year it’s a terrible market for teams like Pittsburgh. |
12:30 |
: I didn’t. I tried. I do think the trade deadline should be changed to reflect the new market. Saw the Phillies think of themselves as buyers! That means like three teams are sellers.
|
12:31 |
Some Chicago reporter today reported Kenny Williams was in Altoona, PA, presumably to scout players for a potential Pirates-White Sox trade. Thing is, the Curve haven’t been in Altoona all week and also aren’t there now. Did some clever Central PA townies punk this guy? |
12:31 |
: Well done.
|
12:31 |
Eno – Awesome piece on Yo La Tengo. Just wanted to thank you for it. One of my favorite bands. |
12:31 |
: It was really fun talking to him. I think he also enjoyed doing an interview that wasn’t about his process.
|
12:31 |
I tried the Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale last night and thought it was very solid but not worthy of the 9.75 BAR. It didnt knock my socks off or anything. Did I get a bad batch or is it just a very solid beer that lots of people obsess over? |
12:32 |
: It’s just really well-balanced, and about the perfect IPA to try and convince someone to cross over with.
|
12:32 |
Would you rather have Kemp or Holliday in a dynasty for next year? |
12:32 |
: Kemp. I know it’s hard to see right now, but Holliday is way older and I think this sort of thing is going to happen to him soon.
|
12:32 |
Is Corbin a sell high guy or do you believe in him long-term? Have him for $4 in a dynasty league, and REALLY need a 2B. Best deal around seems to be $9 Altuve. Would you do that straight up or expect more? |
12:32 |
: Useful pitcher for useful hitter. I don’t think a guy with a 7k/9 is ever going to be a fantasy ace.
|
12:33 |
Puig for E5 in a keeper. Which side won? |
12:34 |
: Puig probably. I’m putting something like a .265/30/15 true talent on him right now. Even at .265/25/15, the steals and position probably push him over the top. Might be different in a three-OF league.
|
12:34 |
I need to replace Hudson in my Scoresheet rotation. Feldman or Wheeler for the rest of the season? |
12:34 |
: Wheeler.
|
12:34 |
Has Eric Hosmer really turned the corner? |
12:34 |
: Just a bit of streaky guy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another slow period.
|
12:34 |
Will Mike Olt be a fixture in Chicago, or just a stopgap until Kris Bryant gets there (assuming he does)? |
12:35 |
: If his eyes are okay and he goes back to a 10BB%/30K%/high ISO guy, he could make it work. I don’t know anything about Bryant except he debuted with five Ks in five PAs and has power.
|
12:35 |
I’m in a dynasty league. My teams a mess. Jose Bautista is my biggest trade piece because he’s a one-year contract and I don’t plan to re-sign him. I need to rebuild. Is Bautista straight up for Oscar Taveras a good deal for me? |
12:36 |
: Sure. And I think OT might not get regular PT next year.
|
12:36 |
Maxamuz followed me on twitter and I’m not sure if I should be excited about that or completely terrified. |
12:36 |
Your voice is deeper than I imagined |
12:36 |
![]() Lucas Duda should be back by the end of the month! DUDDDDA! |
12:36 |
: Appropriately timed.
|
12:36 |
Will Peavey be better than Garza if he goes back to the Nl? |
12:36 |
: This year? yes.
|
12:37 |
Eno…make my wait for CT results more tolerable…I’m in the last money spot in my NL only keeper league….do I spend a lot of money on transactions and move my best keepers to maintain or, best case, move to 3rd or stand pat? I have beachy ($1), Corbin ($2), peralta ($3), Luebke ($1), gattis ($6), segura ($10) |
12:37 |
: I might do a bit of Peralta shopping. Your keepers are good, though, and you might get a boost from Beachy and Luebke on the pitching side..
|
12:38 |
Time to think about dumping Nelson Cruz in FL? |
12:38 |
: I actually think he might be talking real life here.
|
12:38 |
So Medlen stays in the rotation now yes? |
12:39 |
: I don’t think he was really ever a risk. If it got too tight, I think the Bravos would have demoted Teheran and preserved his innings with some four-inning outings.
|
12:39 |
Do you have any advanced glowstick taxi hailing tips? |
12:39 |
: Works best in the rain.
|
12:39 |
Hosmer! Proving that patience is everything in baseball. What, then, will waiting on Lawrie prove? |
12:39 |
: Similar things. The problem is always, in redraft leagues: might be next year.
|
12:39 |
Is Carlos Gomez the real deal or are we seeing his ceiling this year? |
12:40 |
: I don’t think he’s a .300 hitter, but everything else is hunky dory. (.260 or so)
|
12:40 |
Hey Eno. Were you over zealous in your critique of Matt Moore? He’s not striking out a ton but are the lowered walks a sign of progress? |
12:41 |
: It’s Podhorzer that’s killing him. I’m saying he can make this package work… as long as he’s striking people out. So I think he’s a bit of a risk long-term, but at least the Rays seem good at keeping guys healthy.
|
12:41 |
If the Giants (re)sign Wilson, there’s no chance he takes Romo’s job any time soon, right? |
12:41 |
: No
|
12:41 |
You gotta try some BIGJohn from goose island |
12:41 |
: Heaven’s Gate was great too.
|
12:41 |
People didn’t think Jose Fernandez was ready either. Maybe the Marlins know what they are doing |
12:41 |
: Yeah but the other point is: why? Why now?
|
12:42 |
WTH won’t the Marlin’s trade Stanton to the Rangers? For Profar, Luke Jackson, and Gallo, it seems like a perfect fit/great haul. |
12:42 |
: Yup, and man would that be delicious for Stanton owners.
|
12:42 |
Joe Blanton is 2-13 |
12:42 |
: Looks like he lost his job too. Which sucks because his K-BB is pretty decent.
|
12:42 |
Where is E. Mujica pitching in ’14 and is he closing? |
12:43 |
: Dunno and probably not.
|
12:43 |
Sale? Wht to do with him and target |
12:43 |
: Love him and don’t break him. I’d keep him if you competitive this year. And even in a keeper, feel like if he breaks, it’s the elbow not the shoulder.
|
12:44 |
Looking like Santana, Peavy, Crain, A.Ramirez will all be moved. Any other big names? |
12:44 |
: GREGG. Well I guess that’s only five letters.
|
12:44 |
Can we trust Lance Lynn? |
12:44 |
: yes. To be this or a teensy bit better.
|
12:44 |
Should I trade for Niese in a deep dynasty? Injury concerns? |
12:44 |
: Ceiling concerns. And yes, it’s never good to hear anything about a shoulder. So I think no.
|
12:45 |
Speaking of Gee…he’s been out of his head the last 10 starts after being awful. Is he keepable next year at $5 in 5×5 NL only? |
12:45 |
: Hmmmm. I mean, the changeup is good, and he’s obviously figuring stuff out. But he throws his 88 mph fastball high in the zone for Ks and that just seems like he’ll always have a 1.2ish HR/9. But, it’s not impossible to be good like that if you have a good K-BB rate. I wish he was $1 in your league though.
|
12:46 |
Does WAR account for pitches per PA for hitters? |
12:46 |
: There’s very little correlation between P/PA and any offensive stat. The only time I use it is to see if the player is trying something different.
|
12:46 |
Going to grab lunch. Back in 10. Pause the chat, please. Thank you. |
12:46 |
![]() Did you know Al Bundy scored 4 touchdowns in one game for the Polk High Panthers? |
12:46 |
I’m going to NYC this weekend and need beer suggestions. Help me out Eno/Eno’s entourage. |
12:47 |
: Oh! Go to Pony Bar if you in Manhattan. In Brooklyn, so many options, but Bierkraft was one of my favorites.
|
12:47 |
Ervin Santana: Great Trade Chip, or the Greatest Trade Chip of All Time? |
12:47 |
: Go get Profar.
|
12:47 |
Who lands Peavy? |
12:47 |
: Boston?
|
12:47 |
Will Michael Young be a must add in a shllow league if traded to the Yanks? |
12:47 |
: Eh. Still just a batting average at best.
|
12:47 |
Is the Grilli “not a serious injury” talk just smoke and mirrors? It looked pretty serious to me. |
12:48 |
: I agree. And forearms often lead to TJ. But what can you do except wait for news.
|
12:48 |
Im confused and Gio he was on the list but only took legal supplements will be in trouble? |
12:49 |
: I mean, this is what the rumor was or whatever. I hate this.
|
12:49 |
MLB has a sorta-kinda service clock for all draftees. It’s called the Rule 5 draft. Of course that only really applies for guys who have been in the system for 4-5 years. |
12:49 |
: Good point. But he was talking about MiLB + MLB service.
|
12:49 |
Woohoo finally not missed one of these! Start Latos at the red-hot Dodgers today? Han-Ram’s on fire right now (know as I own him), and Latos has been meh for a few starts now. |
12:49 |
: Latos is an every-starter for me.
|
12:50 |
Eno, I am potentially looking to relocate to the Bay Area (better job market for the wife). I need some lude-tacular life-coaching about the potential change. I live in Boston currently |
12:51 |
: SF is for the fun, East Bay is cost-effective, this place is awesome, and we don’t really do winter. DOoooooo it.
|
12:51 |
in a deep h2h dynasty with no actual money on the line, on the cusp of either just making or just missing the playoffs. Should I admit defeat and build for next year and a better draft pick, or trade for pieces who can help me now but I can’t afford next year to hope luck favors my matchups in September? |
12:51 |
: You’ve still got a chance. Don’t sell chips to make it, but work the wire and stay in it.
|
12:51 |
Will Wacha reappear in the Cardinals rotation again this season? |
12:52 |
: Is C-Mart ahead? Looks like Carp is now too. Dunno.
|
12:52 |
Any holds sleepers for ROS? |
12:54 |
: Gotta get Alan to do another piece! Lemme think. Thayer? Hard to know what a dark horse is. I like Casey Fien some. I like Blake Parker but been told by some Cubs fans he’s having issues. Ooh! Bryan Morris is moving up in the Pitt bullpen right now. Sanitago Casilla is back. Love Neal Cotts.
|
12:54 |
Will Bryce be ok? Or is he a victim of hype? |
12:54 |
: He’ll be much better than OK. At the very least, he’ll be a slugger with a little bit of speed and an okay batting average.
|
12:55 |
Wasn’t it just, like, last year when everyone considered 3B a wasteland? |
12:55 |
: Injury can do that to a position.
|
12:55 |
You’re lucky your mom wasn’t into other music |
12:55 |
: “Manilow Sarris”
|
12:56 |
I love the chats Eno! Could you please rank these guys ROS: Bartolo Colon, Justin Verlander, Francisco Liriano, Chris Sale |
12:56 |
: Verlander, Sale, Liriano………. suspension ……. colon.
|
12:56 |
Is my infatuation with Archer justifiable? |
12:56 |
: It all hangs on that changeup.
|
12:56 |
Is Profar going to be relevant next year? I don’t see him getting out of Texas? |
12:57 |
: Yes but there are many ways that team can be reconfigured in the offseason. Like Kinsler to the OF.
|
12:57 |
Keep Matt Moore at $29 next year in ottoneu points? |
12:57 |
: HE doesn’t give up HRs, which is huge in that format. Ks are good… I’d do one more year if my team was in good shape for contending.
|
12:58 |
Jarvis the cat loves Lucas Duda |
12:58 |
In THEGAME, my firstbaseman is having a breakout sophomore year. BB%, K%, and ISO are steady from last year, but I’ve seen my BABIP go from .274 to .347. Should I expect regression in the final months or might I be a high BABIP selector of firstbasemen. |
12:58 |
I’ll show you a Carlos Danger sized package |
12:58 |
Your hair sounds deeper than I thought |
12:59 |
Miguel Gonzalez is nowhere near as good as his results would indicate. Is this correct? |
12:59 |
: Yes that is my thought.
|
12:59 |
You don’t think a guy with a 7k/9 is ever going to be a fantasy ace? |
12:59 |
: Well, touche. But you’re calling Corbin the next Doc?
|
12:59 |
Do you see Matt Kemp returning this year and being Matt Kemp, or even close to it? I’ve got him in a H2H so don’t mind so much that he’s out right now, as long as he returns to rake in our fantasy playoffs. |
12:59 |
: Gotta hold.
|
12:59 |
Lincecum on the move this week? |
1:00 |
: No way. Only thing we heard was Tigers as reliever and.. naw.
|
1:00 |
Do you think teams are foolish handling the wild card? I mean, Sure you might get the second wild card, But it is a one game playoff, which in baseball, is coin flip. Are teams seriously buying and not selling at the deadline due to the coin flip wild card….? |
1:00 |
: Exactly. I think what it means is more inactivity. Eh, let’s neither buy nor sell to see what happens.
|
1:00 |
Holds league…will Shawn Kelley keep up his K rate? |
1:01 |
: He told me has two sliders, and he has good velo, so yeah I like him.
|
1:01 |
Eno! when can I get a beergraphs tshirt! |
1:01 |
: We gotta get on it.
|
1:01 |
Have you had Dogfish Head 61 Minute IPA? It’s 60 Minute brewed with syrah grape must. Pretty interesting! (I’m not usually into beers like that; but it’s solid.) |
1:01 |
: It’s really weird. I don’t like the ‘must’ beers. 75 minute IPA though…
|
1:01 |
Have you tried the Golden Road’s, Point the Way IPA? They’re in LA oddly enough but surprisingly good. Now if we could only get Dodger Stadium to sell them… |
1:01 |
: No, but Dodger Stadium needs craft beers more than any other stadium I’ve been to.
|
1:02 |
Ugh, Rendon had some ugliness at SS last night. |
1:02 |
Delmon Young: proof that patience is everything in baseball (see what I did there?) |
1:02 |
Evan Gattis is more impressive than Duda. |
1:02 |
: Hey! A baseball-themed interlude.
|
1:02 |
Eno, thoughts on Victory’s Swing Session Saison? The first saison I’ve ever had, I enjoyed it, but I’m interested in seeing how it compares to others of the type |
1:03 |
: Have not had it. But Dupont is the winner for me, mostly, and now they have a dry-hopped saison that I want.
|
1:03 |
Do you think Rutledge will gain any traction this year in Colorado or is he a complete bust at this point for 2013? |
1:03 |
: Bad discipline, bad glove… Mighta whiffed on that one. Maybe he comes back as backup IF and fights his way back into a position with some BABIP love.
|
1:04 |
Butler and JJ Hardy for Reyes a fair fantasy deal? |
1:04 |
: I want Reyes, but it’s fine.
|
1:04 |
Any chance Beachy is useful? Walks have me scared. |
1:04 |
: I want him on my bench somewhere.
|
1:04 |
Sabathia and Rothschild say they’ve found a flaw in his arm slot. How much impact do you think it’s had on him? |
1:05 |
: It killed his velocity? Doubt it.
|
1:05 |
The play by play guy for the Nats just said “crew chiefs tend to call more strikes [than other umpires].” Uh… does that sound right or have you seen any research on the ridiculous-sounding statement? |
1:05 |
: All I got is to search for Zimmerman’s umpire projections (which are old) and see which ones are the crew chiefs.
|
1:05 |
Pedro Alvarez: Great, average, or meh for fantasy purposes? |
1:06 |
: With batting average for the league down to .250s, he’s getting closer to great. But I just think all those Ks make him average, above-average.
|
1:06 |
In an NL-only OBP keeper league would you rather give up Marte @ 10 or Craig @ 13 for next year. Would you rather get back Latos or Homer Bailey (both unkeepable), |
1:06 |
: Marte steals bases, and neither OBP is like real awesome, right. Latos.
|
1:06 |
Have you consider something like baseball wOBA for Beergraphs? Allowing us to say Beer 1 is good, but beer 2 is a different style, but still better than beer 1. |
1:08 |
: That’s basically the idea behind BeerGraphs, in sum. wOBAR is beer score relative to style, and then we add a popularity figure in and scale it to make BAR. The problem we are looking at now is that IPAs are very popular, which pushes their BAR up, but we still want to reward a beer for having many check-ins compared to another beer which might have 50 five-star ratings.
|
1:08 |
My nephews are distracting me from my chat experience. And they are still too little to care about baseball…great now the 4yr old is asking to watch Wagga Wagga muppets thing. Youtube that and you’ll witness what I will soon be watching 3 times in a row. |
1:08 |
MA’AM! |
1:09 |
#NYBEER: Brooklyn Pennant Ale, because baseball, duh!!! |
1:09 |
: OOf. barely finished that interlude.
|
1:09 |
Draft barn is pretty good in bklyn too |
1:09 |
Got Kinsler for J. Upton…pat me on the back? |
1:09 |
: Yeah I like that.
|
1:09 |
Is Matt Carpenter a for real fantasy player in OBP league? |
1:10 |
: In OBP, he’s even better. And in H2H, this year, he’s a beast because he’s just about the best extra player you could have. But I do think his true talent is a little below where he is now, and he’s not going to hit more than 15-20 homers most years.
|
1:10 |
Did anyone get the lyrics? |
1:11 |
: Actually someone did but they just put it in their handle, so it’s out there still.
|
1:11 |
I like the beer wOBA idea. The leaderboards will obviously just be filled with IPA’s, which should receive some type of negative weight since of course they’re good. Others should receive positive weights for the element of surprise. |
1:12 |
: We’ll be sortable by wOBAR and BAR soon. Then you can sort by wOBAR and there will be fewer IPAs. You’ll also get some strange beers that got rated for five stars by 52 people.
|
1:12 |
Is hechavarria 4 real? |
1:12 |
: Just an empty batting average. No walks. Some steals, but even the batting average is about to drop after this BABIP streak slows.
|
1:12 |
Would you rather have Franklin or Miller in Seattle? |
1:12 |
: Franklin for some reason. They’re similar, statistically.
|
1:13 |
Starling Marte overhyped? Approach at plate seems somewhat lacking. |
1:13 |
: yeah, but even .270/.330 works if you 15/35 it.
|
1:13 |
Can we talk about real news like how a Waffle House stand will open in Turner Field tomorrow serving waffles and hashbrowns? It’s the first non-24 hour Waffle House. It’s kind of a big deal. |
1:13 |
: Tell me about the beer.
|
1:13 |
the Saison Dupont dryhop is an annual thing I believe–better get on that soon, it’s getting hard to find around here |
1:13 |
: Oh no.
|
1:13 |
Jesse Crain: Setback, won’t be back before deadline. Red Sox fans hang heads, kick dirt collectively. |
1:13 |
: Shoot, so do White Sox fans.
|
1:13 |
Did the Marlins send down Ozuna only to DL him just to mess with fans? |
1:14 |
: There’s no reason to send him down other than service time stuff, I don’t think. His K% was about as good as you could have expected! D looked fine. Missing something here.
|
1:14 |
Will Colby Lewis be useful for the Rangers like at the beginning of August? |
1:14 |
: Worried about him. I stashed him in a lot of deeper leagues, but the velo is down and they aren’t in a hurry to go get him.
|
1:15 |
You can tell we are in mid-season form and nearing trade deadlines. This is the first time in a while your chat has had a heavy dose of baseball, less beer, and less Maxamuz. |
1:15 |
: you should see it in the winter.
|
1:15 |
Need a beer opinion: Chimay, good or meh? |
1:15 |
: I don’t love dubbels and trippels
|
1:15 |
Iglesias coming back down to earth offensively. Over/Under on when Bogaerts becomes the Red Sox staring 3B: August 15th? |
1:16 |
: Talked to Marc Normandin about this because I can’t figure it out statistically. Looks like Middlebrooks is working some stuff out, but may not be there yet. Bogaerts hasn’t been in Triple-A long, but all the rates look great. I do think Iglesias needs to be at shortstop to provide his best value. Maybe they make him a super util again (Drew can use help) and a 3B comes up… but which one I don’t know.
|
1:16 |
I love you |
1:16 |
: I love you too
|
1:16 |
Matt Adams would be a top __ 1b with everyday playing time? |
1:17 |
: 15?
|
1:17 |
The internet has really hurt the patience of everyone, hasn’t it? Harper is 20. He isn’t even near what are supposed to be his “prime years”. |
1:17 |
Ubaldo Jimenez is nowhere near as bad as his stats show…. well, maybe he is.. |
1:17 |
: I own him in some deeper leagues, but I’m chucking and ducking anytime I throw him.
|
1:18 |
Will Verlander beat Peavy today? If you were a betting man who would you pick and is it close? |
1:18 |
: Verlander
|
1:18 |
1:18 |
Why are the Orioles buying? Shouldn’t they just stay put? They having pitching help on the way next year with Guasman and Bundy later on. |
1:18 |
: This is a great point. I bet they stop.
|
1:18 |
BROOKLYN SORACHI ACE!!! |
1:18 |
: So so so so so so good
|
1:18 |
IS Erasmo gonna get better? Who are his comps ROS? |
1:18 |
: I do think so. I don’t believe he has this bad control.
|
1:18 |
I need pitching. Any of these options exceptable? Trade Brantley for Colby Lewis straight up or Brantley for Phil Hughes and sacrifice a round 2 pick for a round 5 pick in next years draft? |
1:19 |
: Ug. That seems like bad value for Brantley. Brantley for Hughes sounds fine to me without the rounds.
|
1:19 |
Brent Lillibrige’s wRC+ is -62. -62!!. and he’s batting 2nd for the yankees today! |
1:19 |
: The decline of western civilization came swiftly.
|
1:19 |
I bite Dave because I loves him |
1:20 |
Did you hear NYC is kicking out MSG and building a new Penn Station? I’ll drink to that. |
1:20 |
We need a Reggae Graphs site – no? |
1:20 |
: Music at least. and yeah buhbye MSG. /luded
|
1:20 |
It looks like Pony bar is like..8 blocks from my hotel. Nice. Does 3/45 seem like a reasonable contract for Utley? I mean, it is, but is it for my Phils? |
1:20 |
: Degenerative knees… rather give him 3/30 or something.
|
1:20 |
Can we stop calling them ‘greenies’? Those guys were all on speed. Modern athletes get way too much flack |
1:21 |
: You’re right that it makes it seem fine. Greenies! Just little pills. Basically METH.
|
1:21 |
Is Jason Heyward really going to turn it around? I passed on Adam Jones and Jay Bruce to take the guy, and it’s taking everything I have to not send him to waivers and say good riddance |
1:21 |
: Yes very much so for the future. This year is dicier, people have bad years. But I still believe he’s better than your waiver wire piece.
|
1:21 |
as someone concerned with ethics, I’m appalled at the way people hint at PED use. During the Rays broadcast yesterday, the announcers made attempts at backhanded/joking PED allegations of Ortiz. Davis is getting them too. The debate around PED’s aside totally; the ethics of basically accusing without any any evidence/accountability/consequences is astounding. |
1:24 |
: Hold on. This is very important and interesting to me. Because we KILLED journos and the media and baseball for not doing anything about PEDs the first time through. But libel laws exist! We cannot say thinks to impugn people without knowing. So journos — even responsible ones that care and don’t want to just joke about it — are stuck between saying nothing and burning all sorts of bridges to try and prove that one player knew what he was taking or whatever. I think about this a lot. It’s not an easy choice. I just hope the writers that are making them have thought about it. If I joke here about, it’s because I’ve thought about it.
|
1:24 |
C-Mart was just optioned to AAA if that matters with Wacha |
1:24 |
: This does matter, but it also doesn’t… if they are going to stretch him to take Kelly’s job.
|
1:24 |
Please explain Junior Lake to me. Bless |
1:25 |
: free swinger with no glove, bad approach, great tools, could make it work with a bad batting average.
|
1:25 |
SF may not do winter, but you can get to Tahoe in a couple hours and hit some awesome slopes! |
1:25 |
Should I move to Portland or Austin? I hate winter, hate hot weather, and I’m a musician and beer lover. |
1:25 |
: Portland sounds like your place. It gets a little cold, but more rainy cold.
|
1:25 |
I hit .302-384-.526 with 24HR-32 SB in 2012 and hitting .311-.409-.608 with 27HR-32SB so far. I’m the Minor League Player of the Year. Why am I not in Houston yet? |
1:25 |
: No need.
|
1:26 |
Notice you mention playing basketball, and you did know elton brand was old a couple of weeks ago…are you a big bball fan? And if so, Knicks fan? Thoughts on the offseason moves? |
1:26 |
: Yes, yes and man that team looks old to me.
|
1:26 |
Is Nick Franklin going to produce at .270 with 20 hr going into 2014? |
1:26 |

1:27 |
My nephews are losing patience haha. They want to watch youtube videos. 2013 parenting. Good thing I’m not the parent. In fairness, it’ll probably be old muppet videos and MTA trains. |
1:27 |
“Man, it really looks like Eno is going to go another couple of hours. He just pushes it so hard compared to the other chatters. Although I wonder if it’s 100% natural…” |
1:27 |
You seem to believe a suspension is looming for Colon. Isn’t there a chance that his Biogenisis involvement led to last year’s suspension, rather than resulting in another suspension? |
1:28 |
: Here’s the thing. 65 games for Braun suggests to me that there was something in there other than just your 50 game suspension. There was talk, for example, of punishments for lying. And, there was also talk that they had evidence that Braun was doing for a long time. if they have similar evidence on Colon, then it won’t matter that he was once suspended.

REAL BASEBALL MAY TAKE AWAY MY TRADE DEADLINE, BUT THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY MY FANTASY BASEBALL TRADE DEADLINE! FREEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!! |
1:30 |
: That was like a lude lightning round
|
1:30 |
Seems like Beergraphs needs a ‘qualified’ filter of like 100 or 250 checkins |
1:30 |
: it’s already 50. Thinking of allowing people to manipulate that in a filter.
|
1:30 |
How do I sort the leaderboards? I click on the woBAR and nothing happens. Still sorted by BAR. Am I missing something here? |
1:31 |
: Working on that. All you can sort by right now is state and style.
|
1:31 |
Sup Eno. |
1:31 |
: Sup. You wanna lightening?
|
1:31 |
the ludening |
1:31 |
Well, part of that is there was some notable evidence at the time of people using PED’s right? I mean, the backhanded announcer comment was basically, his stats have gone up in the last few seasons as he’s aged, I’d hate to be a lawyer trying to defend that. Does Ortiz deserve that kind of suspicion just because he’s gotten better in the last few seasons after a down season or two? I don’t know. I hear what you’re saying though, that journalists have to try to cover it. I think that instead of covering it though, this is the worst possible version. The slight of hand diss/accusation with no evidence, you know? We should nerd out on this sometime…I am thinking about it a lot also! |
1:32 |
: Well there was the fact that Ortiz failed a test in 2003 before the program was implemented.

Eno, I think Hector Santiago is being criminally underrated – K/9 over 9, good ERA, moderate WHIP – the walks are a problem, but could he improve there over time? Do you think he’s worth keeping at 27th round pricetag? |
1:33 |
: problem is the screwball is flat, the changeup only okay and the walks are a problem. AT that price tag, possibly, use the rest of season to figure it out.
|
1:34 |
one thing i’d really enjoy on beergraphs would be regional sorting, because that would capture more/less what i can buy. i like in chicago, i can typically get everything that IL, IN, MI, WI, and MN have to offer (though Surly and New Glarus are harder to come by), i’d love to see a Great Lakes Regional ranking! |

Isn’t there a difference between the 90s writers ignoring evidence that was plainly there and people today who suggest PEDs based solely on surprisingly strong performance? The reason older writers got burned was that they saw the evidence and failed to report it (at least, that’s my understanding–you know better, I’m sure). It’s one thing to speculate on Ortiz (given past test results) and another to speculate on Davis, where no one has actually produced any evidence beyond “hurrdurr he strong now”. |
1:35 |
: yes. not lightning.

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Not long ago most thought that the Brauns, A-Rods, the Peraltas on the Biogenesis list would escape punishment. More recently most of us thought the MLPA would be able to drag out due process well into the off-season. With Braun’s guilty plea, many baseball writers seem to think these guys will be suspended this year.
What do you think? I have Peralta in a deep league … sure would like to see him finish this season at SS for the Tigers. What are the odds?
