Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 7/25/13

11:47
Eno Sarris: woof. Had some connection issues. here in fifteen minutes.

12:01
Eno Sarris: These lyrics of the day are from the week I spent in Chicago…

I was reading ingredients,
Asking myself “should I eat this?”

I was scratching off silver ink.
I was deciding what to drink.

12:01
Comment From Cliff
If the Blue Jays decide to trade away Josh Johnson prior to the trade deadline, what kind of package could they receive? Which teams do you think would be interested?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Not a great package, not like a Carlos Danger package. But I can’t imagine an AL team wants in right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t bet on it, even with a team that’s forward-looking, his stats right now are not something you really want…

12:03
Comment From person
Anthony Rendon played SS yesterday. If he gets eligibility there, about where would you rank him? Would you rate him +/- Nick Franklin?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Desmond back in today, but… I don’t think it will happen. If it did. Huh, Franklin has more SB upside, Rendon maybe more BA… I would still like Franklin, but it’s around there.

12:03
Comment From zack
Better ROS: Delmon or Francoeur?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Needle in the eye.

12:04
Comment From Neal Huntington
What should I do this week, Eno? Who would be the best fit for my Buccos?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Looked through the team a little bit. Maybe Alexei Ramirez? That wouldn’t be crazy actually. Also, maybe a starter?

12:04
Comment From Alex
When constructing a minors roster, would you prefer to have players with high upside and low floor or lower upside and high floor?

12:05
Eno Sarris: In real life, I’ll go for upside early in the draft, and then near that signability moment (I forget what round it’s in), go after high-floor college people. In fantasy? Upside is all I care about. Nobody wants a usable piece.

12:05
Comment From bdhudson
Eno! Welcome back! Cameron won’t respond to me – do you know how far back DRS is reliable? Can I look at 2001-2010 DRS numbers and feel pretty good about them?

12:05
Eno Sarris: We’ve been getting BIS information since 2002, so that’s a good spot to start.

12:05
Comment From JEB
Enoooooooooooo! How did you like Chicago? What was the best beer you tried? I had a Ninja vs Unicorn from Pipeworks, I think I’m in love.

12:06
Eno Sarris: I’m so broken. Wow. It was crazy. I had some Veritas, a Belgian Stout (rare!) from the brewpub at Goose Island, and I had some Daisy Cutter IPA from half acre. those were highilghts.

12:06
Comment From bdhudson
Dayton Moore has made Ervin Santana ‘available.’ Did he do this after Garza was traded because he knew it would keep Santana’s price high? Or is that giving him way too much credit for being aware of his surroundings?

12:07
Eno Sarris: I can’t get in that man’s head.

12:07
Comment From JEB
4 man keeper league, I have Trout, Harper, Yads, Rizzo, Harvey. Is it worth keeping Harvey? Or are pitchers too risky? If I keep him should I do Yads or Rizz?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Oh man. IN a keep four I would almost never keep a pitcher. But I love Harvey. And he’s young. I think you gotta keep him.

12:08
Comment From Alex
I traded Aroldis Chapman for Zunino and Jesus Montero in my dynasty league. Will I come to regret this deal?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Zunino still has a chance. I think you might.

12:08
Comment From zack
Do you trust good Liriano to stick around all year?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Yes.

12:08
Comment From bdhudson
Also, I threw out my back playing softball. I need ludes.

12:08
Comment From Sirras One
Eno! Eno! Pick my question! Eno over here!

12:08
Comment From Bkgeneral
Kemp has been a total bust. Then I see how he got hurt, and my blood boils. That was just laziness, pathetic!

12:08
Eno Sarris: Emotional Interlude.

12:08
Comment From Rear Naked Choke
Why can’t baseball start some sort of service clock as soon a prospect signs, adjust it so it’s about the same amount of control years, and then be able to call guys up without financial worries. Seems like it would be better for everyone involved, including fans who would get to see better players at the major league level earlier.

12:08
Eno Sarris: That sounds too reasonable.

12:09
Comment From zack
Are you buying awesome, MVP caliber Hanley to stick around all year and next season?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Health looks like it’s starting to be an issue. Maybe “awesome when in.”

12:09
Comment From Sirras One
If you’re the Mets, who are you targeting this offseason?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Ellsbury might be a real nice get for them. The centerfielders they have can’t hit, and they need outfielders no matter what.

12:09
Comment From the king of r&b
My Strasburg and Upton for his Miguel Cabererrera

12:10
Eno Sarris: You get best playerererer.

12:10
Comment From Johnny depp
Is jered weaver for real or is it sell high time

12:10
Eno Sarris: I think he can manage to be good the rest of this season, but if you’re not in competition and in a keeper league, this week is a good time to look to see what you can get.

12:10
Comment From bdhudson
People should stop comparing PED guys like Braun/A-Rod to Pete Rose because it’s a stupid comparison, right?

12:11
Eno Sarris: But I don’t think the greenie/segregation question is as stupid. What we are talking about is an unfair playing field. Rose seems irrelevant to that question.

12:11
Comment From Brandon Beachy
Am I being massively overhyped coming off TJ? I’ve struggled mightly with control during my rehab stint. Seems like I will have a second half ala Adam Wainwright last year.

12:12
Eno Sarris: I would suggest that people that have liberal DL rules leave him on the DL as long as possible to see what he does in the big leagues. Even if it means waiting on other moves while your roster is frozen.

12:12
Comment From John
Who’s not a closer now that will be in a week?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Pedro Strop? Brian Wilson? AJ Ramos?

12:13
Comment From John
Hudson… OUCH

12:13
Eno Sarris: Napoleon Kauffman and Sid Vicious were worse, but Hudson made me think of them.

12:14
Comment From Brian
Keeper league, which side do you want (keeper round doesn’t inflate or have a limit on time to keep a player) — Mike Trout (14th rd) for Justin Upton (10th rd) and David Price (16th).

12:14
Eno Sarris: TROUT

12:14
Comment From Bkgeneral
Waiver wire games. Eaton or Yelich? H2H weekly points league.

12:14
Eno Sarris: Yelich might have more across the board goodness upside, but I’m not sure he’s totally ready.

12:15
Comment From Max
Harper was benched yesterday, has been AWFUL since his return. Time to bench him for someone like Heyward or Upton?

12:15
Eno Sarris: You have a crazy team. I don’t know how to answer this. Maybe use platoon/handedness and pitcher matchups to decide.

In a dynasty league with a costly but tempting trade offer on the table from another owner. The offer: Matt Harvey & Jose Fernandez for Manny Machado, Archie Bradley and Taijuan Walker. What’s your opinion?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Been talking with friends about Manny Machado for a while. Right now I think he’s a true talent .275 20/15 guy. But peak is the question. Is he .300/30/10 peak? Or does he not have that power? Can he figure out the IFFBs? If he’s a .280/20/5 guy (he’s not stealing at a good percentage right now and never was a volume guy), then I’d take Harvey risk and all.

12:17
Comment From Guest
Traded GIO for Martin Prado, Arroyo, and Rajai… happy so far this week but might come back to bite me no?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Rajai is probably a corner outfielder with the glove, and a wrong-side platoon guy with the bat, but if he keeps getting PT, the trade is okay.

12:18
Comment From Sirras One
Hefner or Gee ROS?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Gee. His changeup is the only real plus pitch in the bunch.

12:18
Comment From Hogwagon
BOOM!! have you had 3 Floyds Apocalypse Cow yet? that’s a tasty beverage. Who do you like long term between Arenado and Rendon? Similar projections?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Missed out on cow barely a couple places. Upset. Still like Arenado long term because of home park boost.

12:19
Comment From me

12:19
Comment From Parish Envie IPA
Can Jarred Cosart be this year’s version of Matt Harvey in 2012? Per 100 ip in AAA their peripheral’s are pretty similar, except that cosart’s k/9 is slighty lower and his bb/9 were slightly higher. Cosart’s HR/9, FIP and ERA were all better than Harvey’s in AAA.

12:19
Eno Sarris: I’m way more worried about Cosart’s control then I was about Harvey’s. (and I was a little worried)

12:20
Comment From Cory
Kyle Seager: underrated, or woefully underrated? It doesn’t even feel like he’s a blip on the 3rd base radar of most folks

12:20
Eno Sarris: Definitely a top twelver. Probably a top-tenner. But the position is actually pretty tough, as in, there are a lot of good three-Bs.

12:20
Comment From Eddie
Which Matt Moore is the actual Matt Moore?

12:20
Eno Sarris: The one that strikes out a ton and walks a ton, sadly.

Eno, what’re you thoughts on some disappointing players like Miguel Montero, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro…time to accept their current level of output and cut ties if better options are available?

12:22
Eno Sarris: I still like Chase Headley. And I think Starlin Castro will have better seasons, given his age. For this season, I’ll still keep those guys around. Problem with Montero is I think he can go .260 with 15 home run power, which describes every catcher after about #8 on the rankings.

12:22
Comment From Chris
I tried the Elysian peppercorn saison my 1st saison pretty tasty have you tried it yet? In your infinite fantasy wisdom what will happen to Cruz if anything this seas?

12:23
Eno Sarris: I immediately traded Bartolo Colon when the Braun thing happened. I think that was a game-changer. Mostly because the MLBPA was involved. I thought they would dig their heels in and defend all of them, but now it looks like they won’t. Players might appeal to make another month of money, but you’ll be missing some of these players in the last month of the season at least.

12:24
Comment From Andrew
On saves and steals you mentioned the Marlins were starting up the arbitration clocks for Yelich and Marisnick. Aren’t we well past the Super Two?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Sure, for this year. But the clock just starts running. Mostly the point is, I doubt they are ready.

12:24
Comment From Hogwagon
deep league waiver wire, Nate Eovaldi or Garret Richards (aka Gary Dicks, as the kids call him)? any long term value to either guy?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Eovaldi still doesn’t have a third pitch (actually Gary Dicks doesn’t either). But he’s in the NL, his velocity is looking nice, and he’s the one I might gamble on.

12:25
Comment From Forsyth
Reports coming out that the Red Sox are looking hard at Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. What is your take on him? In terms of talent, it he as good/better/not as good as Jake Peavy right now, who the Sox are also linked to?

12:26
Eno Sarris: I absolutely don’t think so. I’ll have to watch him again, but wasn’t impressed, and the peripherals are not that great.

12:26
Comment From Kevin
Where do the Braves go from here with the rotation? Is Wood/Beachy enough to fill in for Maholm/Hudson or do they try to acquire someone from the outside?

12:26
Eno Sarris: I think they’ll try it with the two young guys, since their upside is fairly considerable. They might be able to pull a waiver deal for a Phillies pitcher in August if they think the young guys aren’t working out.

12:26
Comment From Maxamuz
I need to play in a more advanced league. I have one league mate who is telling me, in all serious-ness, that Wil Myers IS better than Trout and Miggy and will be the face of baseball and the better than both next year.

12:27
Eno Sarris: Oh what it is to have a nice BABIP.

12:27
Comment From Moose
so is Wil Myers living up to your expectations, exceeding them, or falling short? I didn’t see the SB’s coming.

12:28
Eno Sarris: He’s exceeding them in BABIP, but he’s striking out 25% of the time, which is what I figured. I think he’ll walk some more. I think the steals are just a young man thing and he’ll settle into Swisher-esque territory. Maybe more if he can manage plus BABIPs, but that takes forever to be able to say definitively, if ever.

12:28
Comment From zack
Wheeler or Cole ROS? Cole throws more strikes, has a better era, but Wheeler misses a few more bats.

12:28
Eno Sarris: I don’t get why Cole’s arsenal is not producing more swinging strikes. I’ll take him just because it looks like it should get Ks.

12:29
Comment From RetireNutting
Band name — nothing derogatory or bigoted in case you’re not familiar. *Also — no Alexei Ramirez!!! Jordy Mercer is 27 and matching his numbers. And get Kenny Williams out of Altoona and away from Gregory Polanco!

12:29
Eno Sarris: Well, I certainly don’t want them to spend Polanco on Alexei, so I mean, ‘if cheap.”

12:29
Comment From G Money
Sadly looking at next year, keeper league, Profar or Bogaerts, secondly Yelich or Heyward?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Thinking Profar more likely to end up on MI, and I’ll still take Heyward.

12:30
Comment From RetireNutting
Did you make it to Local Option in Chicago? Do you agree with Cameron that trade deadline should be pushed back? This year it’s a terrible market for teams like Pittsburgh.

12:30
Eno Sarris: I didn’t. I tried. I do think the trade deadline should be changed to reflect the new market. Saw the Phillies think of themselves as buyers! That means like three teams are sellers.

12:31
Comment From Ron Jeremy
Some Chicago reporter today reported Kenny Williams was in Altoona, PA, presumably to scout players for a potential Pirates-White Sox trade. Thing is, the Curve haven’t been in Altoona all week and also aren’t there now. Did some clever Central PA townies punk this guy?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Well done.

12:31
Comment From Robbie
Eno – Awesome piece on Yo La Tengo. Just wanted to thank you for it. One of my favorite bands.

12:31
Eno Sarris: It was really fun talking to him. I think he also enjoyed doing an interview that wasn’t about his process.

12:31
Comment From Ronald McDonaldson
I tried the Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale last night and thought it was very solid but not worthy of the 9.75 BAR. It didnt knock my socks off or anything. Did I get a bad batch or is it just a very solid beer that lots of people obsess over?

12:32
Eno Sarris: It’s just really well-balanced, and about the perfect IPA to try and convince someone to cross over with.

12:32
Comment From Kyle
Would you rather have Kemp or Holliday in a dynasty for next year?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Kemp. I know it’s hard to see right now, but Holliday is way older and I think this sort of thing is going to happen to him soon.

12:32
Comment From Spencer
Is Corbin a sell high guy or do you believe in him long-term? Have him for $4 in a dynasty league, and REALLY need a 2B. Best deal around seems to be $9 Altuve. Would you do that straight up or expect more?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Useful pitcher for useful hitter. I don’t think a guy with a 7k/9 is ever going to be a fantasy ace.

12:33
Comment From Cybo
Puig for E5 in a keeper. Which side won?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Puig probably. I’m putting something like a .265/30/15 true talent on him right now. Even at .265/25/15, the steals and position probably push him over the top. Might be different in a three-OF league.

12:34
Comment From Christopher
I need to replace Hudson in my Scoresheet rotation. Feldman or Wheeler for the rest of the season?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Wheeler.

12:34
Comment From Compton
Has Eric Hosmer really turned the corner?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Just a bit of streaky guy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another slow period.

12:34
Comment From MH
Will Mike Olt be a fixture in Chicago, or just a stopgap until Kris Bryant gets there (assuming he does)?

12:35
Eno Sarris: If his eyes are okay and he goes back to a 10BB%/30K%/high ISO guy, he could make it work. I don’t know anything about Bryant except he debuted with five Ks in five PAs and has power.

12:35
Comment From Zach
I’m in a dynasty league. My teams a mess. Jose Bautista is my biggest trade piece because he’s a one-year contract and I don’t plan to re-sign him. I need to rebuild. Is Bautista straight up for Oscar Taveras a good deal for me?

12:36
Eno Sarris: Sure. And I think OT might not get regular PT next year.

Comment From The other Kyle
Eno…make my wait for CT results more tolerable…I’m in the last money spot in my NL only keeper league….do I spend a lot of money on transactions and move my best keepers to maintain or, best case, move to 3rd or stand pat? I have beachy ($1), Corbin ($2), peralta ($3), Luebke ($1), gattis ($6), segura ($10)

12:37
Eno Sarris: I might do a bit of Peralta shopping. Your keepers are good, though, and you might get a boost from Beachy and Luebke on the pitching side..

12:38
Comment From Kevin
Time to think about dumping Nelson Cruz in FL?

12:38
Eno Sarris: I actually think he might be talking real life here.

12:38
Comment From Bird
So Medlen stays in the rotation now yes?

12:39
Eno Sarris: I don’t think he was really ever a risk. If it got too tight, I think the Bravos would have demoted Teheran and preserved his innings with some four-inning outings.

Hosmer! Proving that patience is everything in baseball. What, then, will waiting on Lawrie prove?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Similar things. The problem is always, in redraft leagues: might be next year.

12:39
Comment From Cybo
Is Carlos Gomez the real deal or are we seeing his ceiling this year?

12:40
Eno Sarris: I don’t think he’s a .300 hitter, but everything else is hunky dory. (.260 or so)

12:40
Comment From Buck Turgidson
Hey Eno. Were you over zealous in your critique of Matt Moore? He’s not striking out a ton but are the lowered walks a sign of progress?

12:41
Eno Sarris: It’s Podhorzer that’s killing him. I’m saying he can make this package work… as long as he’s striking people out. So I think he’s a bit of a risk long-term, but at least the Rays seem good at keeping guys healthy.

12:41
Comment From Lenard

WTH won’t the Marlin’s trade Stanton to the Rangers? For Profar, Luke Jackson, and Gallo, it seems like a perfect fit/great haul.

12:42

Sale? Wht to do with him and target

12:43
Eno Sarris: Love him and don’t break him. I’d keep him if you competitive this year. And even in a keeper, feel like if he breaks, it’s the elbow not the shoulder.

12:44
Comment From Tom
Looking like Santana, Peavy, Crain, A.Ramirez will all be moved. Any other big names?

12:44
Comment From Tom
Should I trade for Niese in a deep dynasty? Injury concerns?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Ceiling concerns. And yes, it’s never good to hear anything about a shoulder. So I think no.

12:45
Comment From Jay
Speaking of Gee…he’s been out of his head the last 10 starts after being awful. Is he keepable next year at $5 in 5×5 NL only?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Hmmmm. I mean, the changeup is good, and he’s obviously figuring stuff out. But he throws his 88 mph fastball high in the zone for Ks and that just seems like he’ll always have a 1.2ish HR/9. But, it’s not impossible to be good like that if you have a good K-BB rate. I wish he was $1 in your league though.

12:46
Comment From Guest
Does WAR account for pitches per PA for hitters?

12:46
Eno Sarris: There’s very little correlation between P/PA and any offensive stat. The only time I use it is to see if the player is trying something different.

MLB has a sorta-kinda service clock for all draftees. It’s called the Rule 5 draft. Of course that only really applies for guys who have been in the system for 4-5 years.

12:49
Eno Sarris: Good point. But he was talking about MiLB + MLB service.

12:49

Woohoo finally not missed one of these! Start Latos at the red-hot Dodgers today? Han-Ram’s on fire right now (know as I own him), and Latos has been meh for a few starts now.

Eno, I am potentially looking to relocate to the Bay Area (better job market for the wife). I need some lude-tacular life-coaching about the potential change. I live in Boston currently

12:51

12:51
Comment From tylersnotes
in a deep h2h dynasty with no actual money on the line, on the cusp of either just making or just missing the playoffs. Should I admit defeat and build for next year and a better draft pick, or trade for pieces who can help me now but I can’t afford next year to hope luck favors my matchups in September?

12:51
Eno Sarris: You’ve still got a chance. Don’t sell chips to make it, but work the wire and stay in it.

Ooh! Bryan Morris is moving up in the Pitt bullpen right now. Sanitago Casilla is back. Love Neal Cotts.

12:54
Comment From Bird
Will Bryce be ok? Or is he a victim of hype?

In an NL-only OBP keeper league would you rather give up Marte @ 10 or Craig @ 13 for next year. Would you rather get back Latos or Homer Bailey (both unkeepable),

1:06
Comment From Music For Airports
Have you consider something like baseball wOBA for Beergraphs? Allowing us to say Beer 1 is good, but beer 2 is a different style, but still better than beer 1.

1:08
Eno Sarris: That’s basically the idea behind BeerGraphs, in sum. wOBAR is beer score relative to style, and then we add a popularity figure in and scale it to make BAR. The problem we are looking at now is that IPAs are very popular, which pushes their BAR up, but we still want to reward a beer for having many check-ins compared to another beer which might have 50 five-star ratings.

I like the beer wOBA idea. The leaderboards will obviously just be filled with IPA’s, which should receive some type of negative weight since of course they’re good. Others should receive positive weights for the element of surprise.

1:12
Eno Sarris: We’ll be sortable by wOBAR and BAR soon. Then you can sort by wOBAR and there will be fewer IPAs. You’ll also get some strange beers that got rated for five stars by 52 people.

Bogaerts hasn’t been in Triple-A long, but all the rates look great. I do think Iglesias needs to be at shortstop to provide his best value. as someone concerned with ethics, I’m appalled at the way people hint at PED use. During the Rays broadcast yesterday, the announcers made attempts at backhanded/joking PED allegations of Ortiz. Davis is getting them too. The debate around PED’s aside totally; the ethics of basically accusing without any any evidence/accountability/consequences is astounding.

1:24
Eno Sarris: Hold on. This is very important and interesting to me. Because we KILLED journos and the media and baseball for not doing anything about PEDs the first time through. But libel laws exist! We cannot say thinks to impugn people without knowing. So journos — even responsible ones that care and don’t want to just joke about it — are stuck between saying nothing and burning all sorts of bridges to try and prove that one player knew what he was taking or whatever. I think about this a lot. It’s not an easy choice. I just hope the writers that are making them have thought about it. If I joke here about, it’s because I’ve thought about it.

You seem to believe a suspension is looming for Colon. Isn’t there a chance that his Biogenisis involvement led to last year’s suspension, rather than resulting in another suspension?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Here’s the thing. 65 games for Braun suggests to me that there was something in there other than just your 50 game suspension. There was talk, for example, of punishments for lying. And, there was also talk that they had evidence that Braun was doing for a long time. if they have similar evidence on Colon, then it won’t matter that he was once suspended.

Well, part of that is there was some notable evidence at the time of people using PED’s right? I mean, the backhanded announcer comment was basically, his stats have gone up in the last few seasons as he’s aged, I’d hate to be a lawyer trying to defend that. Does Ortiz deserve that kind of suspicion just because he’s gotten better in the last few seasons after a down season or two? I don’t know. I hear what you’re saying though, that journalists have to try to cover it. I think that instead of covering it though, this is the worst possible version. The slight of hand diss/accusation with no evidence, you know? We should nerd out on this sometime…I am thinking about it a lot also!

Isn’t there a difference between the 90s writers ignoring evidence that was plainly there and people today who suggest PEDs based solely on surprisingly strong performance? The reason older writers got burned was that they saw the evidence and failed to report it (at least, that’s my understanding–you know better, I’m sure). It’s one thing to speculate on Ortiz (given past test results) and another to speculate on Davis, where no one has actually produced any evidence beyond “hurrdurr he strong now”.

Not long ago most thought that the Brauns, A-Rods, the Peraltas on the Biogenesis list would escape punishment. More recently most of us thought the MLPA would be able to drag out due process well into the off-season. With Braun’s guilty plea, many baseball writers seem to think these guys will be suspended this year.

What do you think? I have Peralta in a deep league … sure would like to see him finish this season at SS for the Tigers. What are the odds?
