Eno Sarris: Not a great package, not like a Carlos Danger package. But I can’t imagine an AL team wants in right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t bet on it, even with a team that’s forward-looking, his stats right now are not something you really want…

Eno Sarris: In real life, I’ll go for upside early in the draft, and then near that signability moment (I forget what round it’s in), go after high-floor college people. In fantasy? Upside is all I care about. Nobody wants a usable piece.

In a dynasty league with a costly but tempting trade offer on the table from another owner. The offer: Matt Harvey & Jose Fernandez for Manny Machado, Archie Bradley and Taijuan Walker. What’s your opinion?

Eno Sarris: Been talking with friends about Manny Machado for a while. Right now I think he’s a true talent .275 20/15 guy. But peak is the question. Is he .300/30/10 peak? Or does he not have that power? Can he figure out the IFFBs? If he’s a .280/20/5 guy (he’s not stealing at a good percentage right now and never was a volume guy), then I’d take Harvey risk and all.

Can Jarred Cosart be this year’s version of Matt Harvey in 2012? Per 100 ip in AAA their peripheral’s are pretty similar, except that cosart’s k/9 is slighty lower and his bb/9 were slightly higher. Cosart’s HR/9, FIP and ERA were all better than Harvey’s in AAA.

Eno Sarris: I’m way more worried about Cosart’s control then I was about Harvey’s. (and I was a little worried)

Eno Sarris: Definitely a top twelver. Probably a top-tenner. But the position is actually pretty tough, as in, there are a lot of good three-Bs.

Eno, what’re you thoughts on some disappointing players like Miguel Montero, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro…time to accept their current level of output and cut ties if better options are available?

Eno Sarris: I still like Chase Headley. And I think Starlin Castro will have better seasons, given his age. For this season, I’ll still keep those guys around. Problem with Montero is I think he can go .260 with 15 home run power, which describes every catcher after about #8 on the rankings.

Eno Sarris: I immediately traded Bartolo Colon when the Braun thing happened. I think that was a game-changer. Mostly because the MLBPA was involved. I thought they would dig their heels in and defend all of them, but now it looks like they won’t. Players might appeal to make another month of money, but you’ll be missing some of these players in the last month of the season at least.

Eno Sarris: Eovaldi still doesn’t have a third pitch (actually Gary Dicks doesn’t either). But he’s in the NL, his velocity is looking nice, and he’s the one I might gamble on.

Reports coming out that the Red Sox are looking hard at Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. What is your take on him? In terms of talent, it he as good/better/not as good as Jake Peavy right now, who the Sox are also linked to?

Eno Sarris: I absolutely don’t think so. I’ll have to watch him again, but wasn’t impressed, and the peripherals are not that great.

Eno Sarris: I think they’ll try it with the two young guys, since their upside is fairly considerable. They might be able to pull a waiver deal for a Phillies pitcher in August if they think the young guys aren’t working out.

Eno Sarris: He’s exceeding them in BABIP, but he’s striking out 25% of the time, which is what I figured. I think he’ll walk some more. I think the steals are just a young man thing and he’ll settle into Swisher-esque territory. Maybe more if he can manage plus BABIPs, but that takes forever to be able to say definitively, if ever.

Speaking of Gee…he’s been out of his head the last 10 starts after being awful. Is he keepable next year at $5 in 5×5 NL only?

Eno Sarris: Hmmmm. I mean, the changeup is good, and he’s obviously figuring stuff out. But he throws his 88 mph fastball high in the zone for Ks and that just seems like he’ll always have a 1.2ish HR/9. But, it’s not impossible to be good like that if you have a good K-BB rate. I wish he was $1 in your league though.

Eno Sarris: There’s very little correlation between P/PA and any offensive stat. The only time I use it is to see if the player is trying something different.

Have you consider something like baseball wOBA for Beergraphs? Allowing us to say Beer 1 is good, but beer 2 is a different style, but still better than beer 1.

Eno Sarris: That’s basically the idea behind BeerGraphs, in sum. wOBAR is beer score relative to style, and then we add a popularity figure in and scale it to make BAR. The problem we are looking at now is that IPAs are very popular, which pushes their BAR up, but we still want to reward a beer for having many check-ins compared to another beer which might have 50 five-star ratings.

Bogaerts hasn’t been in Triple-A long, but all the rates look great. I do think Iglesias needs to be at shortstop to provide his best value. Maybe they make him a super util again (Drew can use help) and a 3B comes up… but which one I don’t know.

as someone concerned with ethics, I’m appalled at the way people hint at PED use. During the Rays broadcast yesterday, the announcers made attempts at backhanded/joking PED allegations of Ortiz. Davis is getting them too. The debate around PED’s aside totally; the ethics of basically accusing without any any evidence/accountability/consequences is astounding.

Eno Sarris: Hold on. This is very important and interesting to me. Because we KILLED journos and the media and baseball for not doing anything about PEDs the first time through. But libel laws exist! We cannot say thinks to impugn people without knowing. So journos — even responsible ones that care and don’t want to just joke about it — are stuck between saying nothing and burning all sorts of bridges to try and prove that one player knew what he was taking or whatever. I think about this a lot. It’s not an easy choice. I just hope the writers that are making them have thought about it. If I joke here about, it’s because I’ve thought about it.

Eno Sarris: Here’s the thing. 65 games for Braun suggests to me that there was something in there other than just your 50 game suspension. There was talk, for example, of punishments for lying. And, there was also talk that they had evidence that Braun was doing for a long time. if they have similar evidence on Colon, then it won’t matter that he was once suspended.

Well, part of that is there was some notable evidence at the time of people using PED’s right? I mean, the backhanded announcer comment was basically, his stats have gone up in the last few seasons as he’s aged, I’d hate to be a lawyer trying to defend that. The reason older writers got burned was that they saw the evidence and failed to report it (at least, that’s my understanding–you know better, I’m sure).
