Ben Paulsen aquitted himself nicely while filling in for Morneau. Between him and Kyle Parker, who do you think has the better shot at being the Rockies future 1B and why? Thanks.

12:01
Eno Sarris: Kyle Parker because of age at level. Can’t forget that Paulsen is already 26.

12:01
Comment From Darth Stout
Is Bryce Harper your 2014 fantasy baseball LVP?

12:01
Eno Sarris: There’s still time to hit a few homers and improve the line, but yeah he’s been underwhelming.

12:01
Comment From jocephus
Fangraphs has Adams at 2.5 WAR in 382 PA, even though he’s having a fantastic year at the plate, and Bourjos at 1.1 WAR in 218 PA even though he’s having a miserable year at the plate. That’s 4.3 WAR/700 for Adams and 3.6 WAR/700 for Bourjos. That’s close to the same player. This year. If Bourjos hits at all (and he’s still coming off an injury) he’s a monster player.

12:01
Eno Sarris: Problem with Bourjos is, and has always been, injury and bat. But he’s not a bad player.

12:01
Comment From Patrick
With Baez seemingly taking over at 2B, do you think Alcantara will have enough value as an OF to hold on to him in a 12-team dynasty league?

12:02
Eno Sarris: I don’t think this is all said and done. I’m really worried about Baez’s approach, and I’m not sure Kris Bryant is a third baseman.

12:02
Comment From Jack
Jason deGrom, good pitcher or very good month?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Very good pitcher. Made the changeup great, has gas, command, and the curve has improved.

12:03
Comment From American League Hustle
Hi Eno! Hope you’re having a great week. I’m currently first in my AL-only keeper league, and our league trade deadline is next weekend. I could feasibly win without making any more moves, but I’m close enough that I’ll move whatever I have to if it means winning. That being said, I feel like I’m getting lowball offers on the best keepers I have left, and thus have been hesitant to move any of them. For instance, if I’m offered a pitcher like Weaver or Verlander for my Kevin Gausman (who can be kept for cheap for the next 3-4 years), is it worth making such a move when Gausman may end up with similar numbers ROS? How do I determine what a worthwhile return is, when I don’t necessarily have to make a move and am simply out to solidify my first place standing? Thanks!!!

12:04
Eno Sarris: Weaver for Gausman might be worth it. As much as Gausman’s stuff looks great, he hasn’t turned it into K-BB goodness. Weaver pitches in a pitchers park, and despite the bad velocity, keeps churning out good numbers.

12:04
Comment From Rob S.
Does Kyle Zimmer get a cup of coffee this season? Where would you say he ranks roughly among pitching prospects at AA and above? Thanks a lot.

12:04
Eno Sarris: He’s interesting but he hasn’t pitched at all this season. He’ll pitch wherever he can get the most innings once he’s pitching.

12:04
Comment From Looking Ahead to 2015???
I picked up Allan Craig in my AL-only keeper league, hoping that he’d help me down the stretch. Assuming that the Red Sox shut him down the rest of the way, should I still hang on to him in hopes of a big 2015?

12:04
Eno Sarris: If you’re rebuilding, he’s worth holding on to.

12:04
Comment From Bigums
Thanks for ruining my Baez excitement, would you like to do the same for Jimmy Nelson?

12:04
Eno Sarris: No changeup and iffy control! I’m here all week.

12:05
Comment From Philly Frenetic
Does the Prado trade open up 3B for Jake Lamb next year, or maybe in September? Thanks!

12:05
Eno Sarris: I thought he would have been up right away, but he wasn’t. He seems ready to go an the only real question is what his true talent MLB strikeout rate will look like.

12:06
Comment From Joe
Hey Eno! I commish a league (8th year) & play in it. A manager is frustrated b/c he says I have an unfair advantage of getting trades thru b/c I know everyone (tho his 4th season). I have encouraged folks to respond to all trade requests and offered some suggestions on initiating trade discussions. Previously I had encouraged in person and online events, but we can’t seem to get together. Do you think this is unfair? Anything else I can do? Thanks!

12:06
Eno Sarris: You’ve done more than your share. If everyone’s emails are public knowledge in the league, it’s on him now.

12:06
Comment From Jolly Roger
Hulet wrote a glowing report on Christian Walker not too long ago. He sounds like a potential star at 1B (aside from being 6′), but Davis seems entrenched. Is there a place for Walker in the O’s near future, or does he need a trade to get the opportunity?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Davis is only under team control until 2015. Walker will be 24 next year and ready for cup of coffee work at the very least. I think there’s an opening.

12:08
Comment From Tony G.
If you had to make a prediction, what type of season can we expect from Derek Holland in 2015? In an AL-only league where the top pitchers like Darvish and Felix go for $40, is he good value at $7?

12:08
Eno Sarris: yeah even if I would project him for a 3.9/1.28 type season, he’ll get enough Ks to be worth 7 bucks in an AL-only.

12:08
Comment From Jolly Roger
Looking toward next year, do you see any future aces among Gausman, Hahn, Salazar, Smyly, Alex Wood, and Alex Meyer? Thanks.

12:09
Eno Sarris: The stuff is there for Gausman and Salazar, if they figure out their command/aggressiveness factors. If I was going to bet on numbers next year, though, it might be with Hahn and Wood. Both have mega injury issues, but both have good stuff in the short term and pitch in the NL.

12:09
Comment From Most Mets Fans, Probably
I’m so excited for Matt Harvey that I’d watch a gif of him drinking water!

12:09
Comment From AL Pitching Coach
Talk to me about Joe Kelly. What kind of fantasy value can we expect from him in a Red Sox uniform? Good pickup ROS? Good pick up as a keeper for 2015?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I like that John Farrell said he should throw the offspeed stuff more. I know he has trouble commanding those pitches, but they all look good by whiff and GB rates. I think he could K 7 per nine and still have a 50+ GB rate and be a better pitcher. I guess we’d have to watch his BB% though.

12:10
Comment From Bruno Caboclo
I just traded Waino for Rendon in a H2H 5×5 8-teamer where my 3B was David Wright. Am I out of my mind?

12:11
Eno Sarris: If in a keeper, Rendon should play 2B enough to make this fine long term, and Rendon is playing 2B for you now, no?

12:11
Comment From Alex
ENO!! What’s up? Been waiting all morning to ask you this. Keeper league, no limits on how long you can hold the guy, OPS style. Got offered Harper for Bryant and Taveras. I’m planning on turning that down, but is Baez and Taveras a fair counter offer, or am I giving up too much?

12:12
Eno Sarris: I actually like the Harper and Bryant deal better. That’s an MLBer plus a shot at a great MLBer. Baez is just a 40% shot at a great MLBer.

12:12
Comment From Bigums

12:12
Comment From KB
Can Justin Upton still “break out” within the next 1-2 seasons or is he just a Top 20 OF instead of a Top 5?

12:13
Eno Sarris: No, this is who he is. In fact, at some point the BABIP will fall and the K% will mean a worse BA.

12:13
Comment From Ron Swanson

Papelbon staying put? Who is a better bet to produce their categories ROS – Revere or Singleton? Time to drop Hugh if Stroman is available? Roark, McHugh, or Gausmen ROS? Please and thank you.

12:13
Eno Sarris: Revere, Stroman, McHugh, done!

12:13
Comment From Jake
Any news on why the Indians demoted Salazar and when he’ll be back? I suspect this decision was made before the game, as the news came out immediately after the game.

12:14
Eno Sarris: Yeah dunno. He’s still having command issues.

12:14
Comment From Pale Hose
ENO! Josh Tomlin is nearly identical to Phil Hughes in K%, BB%, and GB%. Do you see a Hughes-like breakout for Tomlin?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Too many homers, and he’s been giving those homers up in a pitchers’ park. I don’t believe.

12:14
Comment From Spencer
With what we know about pitch framing, should we adjust the value of attempting to steal second when there’s a full count? If the catcher tries to hold position to frame a strike, he probably won’t be in the best throwing position. If he favors the throwing position, then there’s a better chance the hitter draws a walk anyways.

12:14
Eno Sarris: Great question. I also wonder about the role of the batter’s body language in the interaction.

12:15
Comment From Preparing for next year
What are some stats you advise someone look at for finding underrated fantasy players? What are some BB% and K% to look for, if those are two. Thanks!

12:17
Eno Sarris: Yeah I like K% and career ISO for batters — if a guy has a great career ISO and an okay K% in the present, I like them. So I don’t hate Bryce Harper, although his K% right now is crazy, his sample isn’t big. For pitchers, K-BB is the best one stat to look at. You’ll find Jake Odorizzi high up in that.

ENO! i got a quick ? is there a way to look up how many TJ surgeries occur for minor league teams?

12:18
Eno Sarris: No, not that I know of. You can find it on some player pages, but not searchable.

12:18
Comment From Bigums
For next year, Cliff Lee or Matt Harvey?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Harvey. Both injured, Harvey is pitching now.

12:19

Don’t laugh at this question….if the Bucs make the playoffs, will Josh Harrison get MVP votes?

Comment From Greg
Are you for MLB Expansion to cities like Montreal and say Portland?

12:21
Eno Sarris: I don’t mind more teams, but the fringy cities seem to produce questionable teams in terms of sustainability. It’s not impossible to win in a smaller market, but you’d have to agree it’s harder, no?

12:21
Comment From Bob
Eno: Kluber or Arreitta?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Kluber for sure for me.

12:22

Comment From John Stamos
Morning Eno! I’m trying to evaluate Mookie in a trade but I feel like I’m being too unreasonable in my evaluation. Dynasty H2H, I need SP for this season and was offered Homer Bailey and Jameson Taillon for Mookie Betts but I’m still hesitating. What do you think?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Looks like he’s only an OF now. So what is a .280/10/30 OF worth? He might have more upside in the power department, but also might not, considering his size.

12:23
Comment From Kris
Are limited release beers getting out of hand? CCB ran out of Marshal Zhukov at their own brewery in like 20 minutes, Mexican Cake is impossible now. I understand the supply/demand of it all, but if the demand is so incredibly high, why aren’t these breweries working to increase their supply? Or is there some utility for the brewery to keep it so limited…

12:24
Eno Sarris: The hype factor helps them sell. Also, some of these breweries don’t have the capacity right now, and upping capacity isn’t that easy. I’ll write about my visit to Three Floyds soon and this will be part of it.

12:24
Comment From The Freemans Bureau
How much confidence do you have in the Oliver 5-yr projections? Yes, this concerns Javier “200 Homer” Baez.

12:25
Eno Sarris: Take a look at the defensive aging and then call up a more marginal prospect and look at their OLIVER projections….

12:25
Comment From Rated Rookie
Which undersized flamethrower is best bet to turn into a no. 2 SP, Stroman or Ventura?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Stroman has more pitches and relies a little bit less on velocity, eh’s my guess.

12:25
Comment From Cornhole
Which SP prospect would you stash for some innings in 2015: Zimmer, Severino, Crick, or Wisler? Thanks Eno.

12:25
Eno Sarris: Wisler.

12:26
Comment From Dan
Cubs claim Hamels on waivers…any realistic chance a deal gets done? What would amaro need to even entertain the possibility?

12:27
Eno Sarris: He thought people weren’t being aggressive enough in the pre-deadline moments, I doubt it gets done now. He might want too much.

I’ve seen Corey Dickerson ranked as high as a top 25 OF, about where would you slot him?

12:28
Eno Sarris: I wish he wasn’t a platoon bad. That takes 1/3 of his .290/25/15 value away… still really valuable.

12:29
Comment From Brian
Dynasty league. Would you rather have Kipnis or Baez at 2B?

Thanks as always for your time, Eno. Right now, there are 5 teams you could reasonably say are in the second wild card spot race. When does that get down to three?

12:29
Eno Sarris: September?

Comment From Jake
Is Gardner’s powergonna hold up?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Power is the hardest question in baseball. Gardner’s improvement is modest enough to believe I think.

12:30
Comment From H to the Rizzo
Are 6 closers too many in a 10 team 5×5 h2h. Should I move one for another SP or stand pat? Meija, chapman, uehera, soriano, cishek and Benoit. SP are zimm, Ty Ross, arrieta, anibal, gio and Alex Cobb.

12:31
Eno Sarris: You’re probably falling behind on some SP stats. I would take a look at improving an SP (Ross?) into a stud with a closer, and then picking up an SP off the wire, or streaming with that extra spot.

12:31
Comment From sENO Evil
Do you know of a strategy to garner wins? I am leery of streaming because I am leading in WHIP/ERA and hate to give that up, but a few more Ws–literally 3, gets 4 four ro five points.

12:32
Eno Sarris: Good matchups and good teams. That’s simplistic, but it probably makes more sense to take Jason Hammel vs the Red Sox at home over a guy like Quintana vs the Astros.

12:33
Comment From Jake
Time to stop dodging the tough questions: What should Betances’ nickname be? #RawDeal? #BlackJack? #BetancesWithWolves? You can’t keep hiding from the truth here,

12:33
Eno Sarris: Monster? Something about his size, cause dude is big.

12:34
Comment From STiVo
Fister passes the eyeball test for being dominant this year for the Nats. He has been making hitters look funny all year. But his FIP- is 101. Is he expected to be underrated by FIP, or do I need to fix my eyeballs?

12:34
Eno Sarris: His peripherals aren’t great actually. Really bad swSTR, bad K%, elite control, meh ground ball rate. I guess the elite control is what’s doing it for him.

12:35
Comment From Guest
Do you think the strikeouts will eventually come for Gausman or are we always going to want more?

12:35
Eno Sarris: I don’t get it either. You’d think — especially since he says he can make his splitter cut by moving the thumb — he has everything he needs to be dominant. And yet by k-bb, he’s marginal. I still think he’ll put it together, but I’m worried, yes.

12:36
Comment From juan pierres mustache
always good to hear why all my prospects are terrible. could you tell us about how parties suck and puppies are overrated now

12:36
Eno Sarris: One thing I didn’t know about puppies: you have to wake up every two or three hours to take them to pee, just like babies. Wait, I’m doing it again.

12:36
Comment From Rated Rookie
I have one waiver acquisition left this season and retooling (slightly) in a keep-forever 16-keeper league. Which SP rookie/prospect should I acquire with it: Giolito, Bradley, deGrom, Stroman, Bundy?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Prospect guys would say Giolito, I think. But the earlier you have TJ, the more likely you are to have it again. So I’ll take DeGrom. He’s doing it. Now. In the bigs.

12:37
Comment From Steve C.
Hi Eno. I’m always looking for OFs with some potential to become regular contributors. Would Pollock or Ackley be worth a look?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Pollock looks like he might be an every-day guy now after the trades. I do like his skillset — if he can hit righties — more than Ackley’s.

12:38
Comment From Fact Checker
Sometimes crazy people invade these chats persistently. We’ve had “Jay Bruce is just as good as Giancarlo Stanton” guy before. Now we have “Peter Bourjos is amazing” dude. Why would Matt Adams (fat 1B with career 129 wRC+) be a comp for Peter Bourjos (speedster OF with career 93 wRC+)?

12:38
Comment From Geoffrey
BA ranked Souza as the best power, speed, and OF arm in the International league. What kind of future do you see for him in Washington, and how soon? Thanks!

12:39
Eno Sarris: Yeah and in the AFL he had the highest batted ball velocity last year. But the strikeout problem looks real. I think he could be the fourth OF soon. Like now.

12:40
Comment From Sandy
Steamer has some major league regression coming down the pike ROS for Jake Arrieta. Do you buy it? More generally, what do you look for to know when projections are overvaluing past production as opposed to current production?

12:40
Eno Sarris: I look for major pitching mix changes, which Arrietta has. I’m a little nervous about all the sliders in his particular case, but that’s an injury question.

12:40
Comment From The Oriole Bird
What beer should I drink in honor of Mike Trout’s birthday (he turns 23 today!)?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Something out of Sierra’s Beer Camp because a) it’s probably going to be good and b) camp makes it sound young.

12:42
Comment From sENO Evil
I think you have been cautious on Captain Kazmir. Given his last two starts, do u think its pumpkin time?

12:43
Eno Sarris: I was a little worried in the first velocity dip http://www.fangraphs.com/pi… but then he recovered. It dipped a little in the last start, but given what happened last time, I’m less worried.

12:43
Comment From Biggie
Gimme the lude gimme the lude. (I’m a bad man.)

12:43
Eno Sarris: Worth a one-man lude.

12:43
Comment From Alex
No, you misunderstood me. I would give up Bryant and Taveras to get Harper. I don’t want to do that deal. Would offering my Baez and Taveras for his Harper be a fair counter offer?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Oh that’s different. I see. Baez and Taveras represents a higher bust rate, but you’re still giving up a shot at an infielder for an outfielder. I think I just chill.

Should Machado move to SS in 2015? Will Machado move to SS in 2015? What will this do for his fantasy value?

12:45
Eno Sarris: I doubt it for some reason. It’s rare, at least. it’s like a starter that’s been pitching out of the pen for two or three years. They very rarely go back into the rotation.

Are you fully buying Michael Brantley’s breakout? Can he sustain this pace for the next 3 years?

12:46
Eno Sarris: I think it’s a career year. I think the power will regress.

12:46
Comment From Kermit
Kevin Kiermaier has the highest OPS by a longshot but he bats 9th every game. But that’s none of my business *sips tea*

12:47
Eno Sarris: I like him, but he’s up here as much for the glove as anything. That position in the order lets him get better without as much stress.

12:47
Comment From Jesus Aguilar
Are you a believer in Everth Cabrera for the rest of the season?

12:48
Eno Sarris: I think he can hit to his career batting average (.247) and steal bases at about a 35 steal pace.

12:48
Comment From Norm
Francona on Danny Salazar (will be back in 10 days when eligible -“We’ve got some off days coming up. This will give him an extra day of rest,” Francona said. “We’re trying to cover a lot of things. We knew we wanted to give Danny a (rest), and this is the best time to do it.”

12:48
Comment From Fish
Danny Santana quite obviously isn’t what he is right now. But can he hold on long enough to carry me for the rest of this season?

12:49
Eno Sarris: He’s got a league average strikeout rate and better than league average speed and power. That should produce a better than .270 BA, I would think.

Comment From Sirras One
Rumors abound that Sandy Alderson will be extended soon. Is it unreasonable to be very pleased with his work thus far and with a possible extension?

12:57
Eno Sarris: I’d rate his work as pleasing generally, but I know there are detractors. I didn’t love the timing on the Ike Davis trade, but it did allow for Duda to have the confidence of a full-year role, and Davis hasn’t really shown himself to be great shakes anyway. I’d like to see what their next big bat signing is before extending Sandy, maybe. Granderson will turn out to be an okay signing, probably, not a terrible one. Young was bad, but one year and 7.5 mill is not a problem for me. I’d give him a B/incomplete.

12:58
Comment From Tom Jones
Will Stroman, McHugh and Smyly all be shut down before the season is done?

1:01
Eno Sarris: They’ve been managing Smyly, so maybe a few more missed starts.. He threw 76 last year and has 110 so far this year… Okay, he’ll get shut down, they cant’ throw him another 60 innings. McHugh threw 140 so I think he’ll pitch all year. Stroman threw 120… You’d think he’d get shut down around 150 normally (he’s around 110 now) but his team is in it and needs him. They may let him get to 175/180, and just skip a start or two.

1:01
Comment From Mike
If you were an owner of a top of the market type team (Boston, NYY, LAD) in need of a GM and Beane (or whoever your top guy would be) was a FA, what would your top contract offer be?

Eno Sarris: I know Lewie Pollis would argue that the market would offer him too little. But I tend to think that there are many more analytics guys willing to get into baseball than there are spots for them, and baseball has a long-entrenched tradition of offering people small salaries and asking them to take part because of their love of the game. So, even though Beane is probably worth eight figures a year, I might offer him high seven figures.

1:03
Comment From Spencer
re: winning in small markets… How many people do you think could do the jobs that Beane and Friedman have done? Are there not more like them because baseball refuses to give them a shot, or because people like them are extremely rare?

1:05
Eno Sarris: I think it’s less the people involved as the willingness to buy into an interesting/innovative philosophy on all levels of a system. The Pirates have shown that willingness and are seeing the benefits. The Cards. There are people like this, and the best orgs belive in those people and buy in completely.

NL only (meaning crazy scarcity of hitting) – is it “must sell” time for any reasonable return on Kemp or can we really believe he can be a 25+HR, 10 SB guy with a decent average next year?

Need keeper advice for next season: Stanton, Rizzo, Harper, Polanco, Rendon, Posey, Baez — keep 2!

1:12
Eno Sarris: Stanton’s the lock. I think I’d just keep Rizzo and with the dearth of power, pat myself on the back. I love Rendon, and Harper has upside still, but no reason to take a chance if you can Rizzo/Stanton it up.

Hey Eno, we always hear about some pitcher or hitter who’s been tinkering with his pitches, release point, swing, etc. What sort of tinker or change does it take for you to believe that a pitcher or hitter may have adjusted his true talent level? I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t, an example: Dallas Keuchel seemed to develop his slider more this year and that’s led to him becoming a pretty darn good pitcher.

1:14
Eno Sarris: I want to see more than a five-game change in pitching mix from a pitcher before I believe. For hitters, I want to see three or four weeks of a big change in contact rate.

1:14
Comment From Bigums
How are you doing in your leagues this year?

Guy with J.D. Martinez keeps offering him to me. He wanted Jennings. I’d do it if I trusted JDM’s OBP to stay above .330, but he’s so BABIP heavy I don’t want to take that risk. Also need runs. I guess the question is how do you value Martinez in an OBP league ROS? How much does he come down?

1:15
Eno Sarris: I don’t trust his OBP, no. Power is nice, but there are plenty of guys with power and bad OBPs.

Re: stealing on 3-2 pitches ? Does pitch framing really have much to do with holding the ball after you catch it? Umps make calls pretty quick. I thought it was more about pre-receiving movement and maybe the split second after the catch. From my subjective experience in highschool all holding the glove in place after the catch did was try to show the ump the pitch he just called a ball was in the zone to try to get the next one.

1:16
Eno Sarris: Still, the action on getting the pitch and wanting to throw it at the same time probably means more movement, and more movement means fewer strike calls, no?

Javier Baez has been lauded for his elite bat speed. A novice like me can use the eye test and see Baez possess great bat. But… At this stage in our technological advancement I would have thought we would have developed a tool to properly measure bat speed (ESPN flirted with this you may recall in the late 90s). I don’t if there is much difference between a player that swings the bat 85mph vs a guy that swings it 90mph but isn’t there some value to put a number on bat speed?

1:34
Eno Sarris: Teams might be there, based on some of the info they get over what we get. For example, I know trackman measures batted ball velocity and we don’t get to see that except in the AFL.

No one ever seems to mention this, but Strasburg never came back the same after TJ surgery. I’m not saying he’s had a bad outcome from it. But prior to surgery, he threw 99 into the late innings and had a wicked curve. He doesn’t throw that hard anymore, never has since surgery, and his change is better than his curve now.

I know this gets asked every year, so this is the year I’m actually gonna remember the answer. In trades that happen after the July trade deadline, do both players (or players on both sides, I guess) have to clear waivers too? Do minor leaguers have to clear waivers?

1:56
Eno Sarris: yes that’s why they are mostly PTBNLs to get around that
