Fangraphs has Adams at 2.5 WAR in 382 PA, even though he’s having a fantastic year at the plate, and Bourjos at 1.1 WAR in 218 PA even though he’s having a miserable year at the plate. That’s 4.3 WAR/700 for Adams and 3.6 WAR/700 for Bourjos. That’s close to the same player. This year. If Bourjos hits at all (and he’s still coming off an injury) he’s a monster player.

Eno Sarris: Problem with Bourjos is, and has always been, injury and bat. But he’s not a bad player.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think this is all said and done. I’m really worried about Baez’s approach, and I’m not sure Kris Bryant is a third baseman.

Hi Eno! Hope you’re having a great week. I’m currently first in my AL-only keeper league, and our league trade deadline is next weekend. I could feasibly win without making any more moves, but I’m close enough that I’ll move whatever I have to if it means winning. That being said, I feel like I’m getting lowball offers on the best keepers I have left, and thus have been hesitant to move any of them. For instance, if I’m offered a pitcher like Weaver or Verlander for my Kevin Gausman (who can be kept for cheap for the next 3-4 years), is it worth making such a move when Gausman may end up with similar numbers ROS? How do I determine what a worthwhile return is, when I don’t necessarily have to make a move and am simply out to solidify my first place standing? Thanks!!!

Eno Sarris: Weaver for Gausman might be worth it. As much as Gausman’s stuff looks great, he hasn’t turned it into K-BB goodness. Weaver pitches in a pitchers park, and despite the bad velocity, keeps churning out good numbers.

Eno Sarris: He’s interesting but he hasn’t pitched at all this season. He’ll pitch wherever he can get the most innings once he’s pitching.

Hey Eno! I commish a league (8th year) & play in it. A manager is frustrated b/c he says I have an unfair advantage of getting trades thru b/c I know everyone (tho his 4th season). I have encouraged folks to respond to all trade requests and offered some suggestions on initiating trade discussions. Previously I had encouraged in person and online events, but we can’t seem to get together. Do you think this is unfair? Anything else I can do? Thanks!

Hulet wrote a glowing report on Christian Walker not too long ago. He sounds like a potential star at 1B (aside from being 6′), but Davis seems entrenched. Is there a place for Walker in the O’s near future, or does he need a trade to get the opportunity?

Eno Sarris: Davis is only under team control until 2015. Walker will be 24 next year and ready for cup of coffee work at the very least. I think there’s an opening.

If you had to make a prediction, what type of season can we expect from Derek Holland in 2015? In an AL-only league where the top pitchers like Darvish and Felix go for $40, is he good value at $7?

Eno Sarris: yeah even if I would project him for a 3.9/1.28 type season, he’ll get enough Ks to be worth 7 bucks in an AL-only.

Looking toward next year, do you see any future aces among Gausman, Hahn, Salazar, Smyly, Alex Wood, and Alex Meyer? Thanks.

Eno Sarris: The stuff is there for Gausman and Salazar, if they figure out their command/aggressiveness factors. If I was going to bet on numbers next year, though, it might be with Hahn and Wood. Both have mega injury issues, but both have good stuff in the short term and pitch in the NL.

Talk to me about Joe Kelly. What kind of fantasy value can we expect from him in a Red Sox uniform? Good pickup ROS? Good pick up as a keeper for 2015?

Eno Sarris: I like that John Farrell said he should throw the offspeed stuff more. I know he has trouble commanding those pitches, but they all look good by whiff and GB rates. I think he could K 7 per nine and still have a 50+ GB rate and be a better pitcher. I guess we’d have to watch his BB% though.

Eno Sarris: If in a keeper, Rendon should play 2B enough to make this fine long term, and Rendon is playing 2B for you now, no?

Eno Sarris: I actually like the Harper and Bryant deal better. That’s an MLBer plus a shot at a great MLBer. Baez is just a 40% shot at a great MLBer.

Eno Sarris: Too many homers, and he’s been giving those homers up in a pitchers’ park. I don’t believe.

With what we know about pitch framing, should we adjust the value of attempting to steal second when there’s a full count? If the catcher tries to hold position to frame a strike, he probably won’t be in the best throwing position. If he favors the throwing position, then there’s a better chance the hitter draws a walk anyways.

Eno Sarris: Great question. I also wonder about the role of the batter’s body language in the interaction.

What are some stats you advise someone look at for finding underrated fantasy players? What are some BB% and K% to look for, if those are two. Thanks!

Eno Sarris: Yeah I like K% and career ISO for batters — if a guy has a great career ISO and an okay K% in the present, I like them. So I don’t hate Bryce Harper, although his K% right now is crazy, his sample isn’t big. For pitchers, K-BB is the best one stat to look at. You’ll find Jake Odorizzi high up in that.

Eno Sarris: Looks like he’s only an OF now. So what is a .280/10/30 OF worth? He might have more upside in the power department, but also might not, considering his size.

Are limited release beers getting out of hand? CCB ran out of Marshal Zhukov at their own brewery in like 20 minutes, Mexican Cake is impossible now. I understand the supply/demand of it all, but if the demand is so incredibly high, why aren’t these breweries working to increase their supply? Or is there some utility for the brewery to keep it so limited…

Eno Sarris: The hype factor helps them sell. Also, some of these breweries don’t have the capacity right now, and upping capacity isn’t that easy. I’ll write about my visit to Three Floyds soon and this will be part of it.

Eno Sarris: You’re probably falling behind on some SP stats. I would take a look at improving an SP (Ross?) into a stud with a closer, and then picking up an SP off the wire, or streaming with that extra spot.

Eno Sarris: Good matchups and good teams. That’s simplistic, but it probably makes more sense to take Jason Hammel vs the Red Sox at home over a guy like Quintana vs the Astros.

Eno Sarris: I don’t get it either. You’d think — especially since he says he can make his splitter cut by moving the thumb — he has everything he needs to be dominant. And yet by k-bb, he’s marginal. I still think he’ll put it together, but I’m worried, yes.

Rumors abound that Sandy Alderson will be extended soon. Is it unreasonable to be very pleased with his work thus far and with a possible extension?

Eno Sarris: I’d rate his work as pleasing generally, but I know there are detractors. I didn’t love the timing on the Ike Davis trade, but it did allow for Duda to have the confidence of a full-year role, and Davis hasn’t really shown himself to be great shakes anyway. I’d like to see what their next big bat signing is before extending Sandy, maybe. Granderson will turn out to be an okay signing, probably, not a terrible one. Young was bad, but one year and 7.5 mill is not a problem for me. I’d give him a B/incomplete.

Will Stroman, McHugh and Smyly all be shut down before the season is done?

Eno Sarris: They’ve been managing Smyly, so maybe a few more missed starts.. He threw 76 last year and has 110 so far this year… Okay, he’ll get shut down, they cant’ throw him another 60 innings. McHugh threw 140 so I think he’ll pitch all year. Stroman threw 120… You’d think he’d get shut down around 150 normally (he’s around 110 now) but his team is in it and needs him. They may let him get to 175/180, and just skip a start or two.

If you were an owner of a top of the market type team (Boston, NYY, LAD) in need of a GM and Beane (or whoever your top guy would be) was a FA, what would your top contract offer be?

Eno Sarris: I know Lewie Pollis would argue that the market would offer him too little. But I tend to think that there are many more analytics guys willing to get into baseball than there are spots for them, and baseball has a long-entrenched tradition of offering people small salaries and asking them to take part because of their love of the game. So, even though Beane is probably worth eight figures a year, I might offer him high seven figures.

Eno Sarris: I think it’s less the people involved as the willingness to buy into an interesting/innovative philosophy on all levels of a system. The Pirates have shown that willingness and are seeing the benefits. The Cards. There are people like this, and the best orgs belive in those people and buy in completely.

Eno Sarris: Overall real life value, my money is on Russell. Fantasy? Bryant.

Hey Eno, we always hear about some pitcher or hitter who’s been tinkering with his pitches, release point, swing, etc. What sort of tinker or change does it take for you to believe that a pitcher or hitter may have adjusted his true talent level? I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t, an example: Dallas Keuchel seemed to develop his slider more this year and that’s led to him becoming a pretty darn good pitcher.

Eno Sarris: I want to see more than a five-game change in pitching mix from a pitcher before I believe. For hitters, I want to see three or four weeks of a big change in contact rate.

Re: stealing on 3-2 pitches ? Does pitch framing really have much to do with holding the ball after you catch it? Umps make calls pretty quick. I thought it was more about pre-receiving movement and maybe the split second after the catch. From my subjective experience in highschool all holding the glove in place after the catch did was try to show the ump the pitch he just called a ball was in the zone to try to get the next one.

Eno Sarris: Still, the action on getting the pitch and wanting to throw it at the same time probably means more movement, and more movement means fewer strike calls, no?

Javier Baez has been lauded for his elite bat speed. A novice like me can use the eye test and see Baez possess great bat. But… At this stage in our technological advancement I would have thought we would have developed a tool to properly measure bat speed (ESPN flirted with this you may recall in the late 90s). I don’t if there is much difference between a player that swings the bat 85mph vs a guy that swings it 90mph but isn’t there some value to put a number on bat speed?

Eno Sarris: Teams might be there, based on some of the info they get over what we get. For example, I know trackman measures batted ball velocity and we don’t get to see that except in the AFL.

No one ever seems to mention this, but Strasburg never came back the same after TJ surgery. I’m not saying he’s had a bad outcome from it. But prior to surgery, he threw 99 into the late innings and had a wicked curve. He doesn’t throw that hard anymore, never has since surgery, and his change is better than his curve now.

Re: shutting Stroman down. Worth noting that stroman’s 120ip last year came after missing 50gms to suspension. He was probably pitching full games in extended ST during the suspension so likely was at (at least) 150+ ip effectively last year, which would mean no real cap on him this year.
