Tim: How many hits do you think you could get in 600 plate appearances Eno?

Eno Sarris: Man you saw my swing path and stats. I think zero, but the role of luck is huge. I’d just swing as hard as I could as soon as the pitcher released the ball and maybe get one.

Nick in Atl: headed across the pond soon – beer/brewery recs in London, Edinburgh & Amsterdam? Enjoying the book also.

Eno Sarris: I don’t know as much about those spots as I should. Cloudburst is doing fun stuff though.

2-D: Eno I just missed out on Pliny and had to get Blind Pig. How big is the gap?

Eno Sarris: Not as big as hype would have it. Know plenty that choose Pig over Pliny.

hscer: do you suspect my rotation next year is in decent shape with a Berrios-Wacha-Weaver-Lamet keeper core (all at minimum or close)? should I consider adding Clevinger and/or Corbin to that group?

Eno Sarris: It’s heavy on upside, pretty heavy on downside. I kinda like the backend help a Corbin could provide.

Jaas: How do you think about Fulmer ROS? How can I best use him? Would you start him against Cleveland?

Eno Sarris: Yeah, I hope there’s no injury remnant going on, but I think he’s still a great pitcher.

Mookie: Despite being on pace for pretty much a 20-20 100-100 season, I’m only hitting .263, when it looks like I should be a .300 hitter and my slugging is down 100 points.  Is it babip related or is there something wrong with me/my approach?

Eno Sarris: I think he’s a .300 hitter. I’m not sure he’s a 30 homer hitter, but I think he’s a .300 20/20 guy.

Tim Tebow’s Thunder Thighs: Hard to believe Strasburg is a year older than Sale – it feels like Sale has been around forever and Strasburg is still trying to live up to his super-prospect labeling.  That said, SS is on pace to hit 1,500 strikeouts in 1,282 innings, or about eight fewer than Sale.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think Strasburg gets enough credit for actually being an ace.

Tim Tebow’s Thunder Thighs: No question, but I’ve learned that you can toss just about anything into red beans ‘n rice and have it turn out great.  Added ground pork, onion, yellow pepper, zuchini and tomatoes the other night and it was superscrumdiliumptious.

Eno Sarris: This after they sat down and looked at his analytics. I think he’s throwing fewer cutters maybe? Also, the neck thing could’ve been a deal.

Tim: What are some of your favorite Florida brews?

Eno Sarris: Funky Buddha, Cigar City, and I’ve heard great things about J Wakefield, Cycle, and Green Bench.

chewbacca: Who would you rather have going forward – Godley or Bauer? Looking to cut one to start streaming to reach my league’s start limit by end of season

Eno Sarris: Godley.

Blue: Does Kyle Tucker have more power in his bat than initially advertised? Hit tool has always been impressive. ISO this year has been impressive

Eno Sarris: He’s quietly flipped his ground ball and fly ball numbers the last two stops in the minors. This could really goose his upside.

Tim Tebow’s Thunder Thighs: I’ve started adding lettuce/spinach, tomato, and mayo to my breakfast sandwiches.  It felt dirty at first but now I like it.

Eno Sarris: Adds some wetness, keeps things from getting dry, helps your colon.

Eno Sarris: Still basically two grounders per fly ball, but there’s an inkling of change there.

Braves Fan: Do you think the Braves would allow a rookie (Acuna, Allard) to break Spring camp with the team? Or will service time factor in?

Eno Sarris: They seem like they want to keep the new park bounce. I bet they let one start with team at least.

Ozzie Albies: Is he able to sustain the babip? Atlanta is looking good for next year.

Eno Sarris: He’s got a league average BABIP right now! I think the real questions are if he can improve the patience and keep the power. I think he can do both. I’m in the tank.

Terrence: Recently, I’ve thought of ignoring pitcher injury risks as a whole when it comes to drafting. I’d rather 150 good innings of Paxton or McCullers than 180 of mediocrity. That’s how I see it. That extra risk is tied into the draft price. The reward seems to be much higher.

Eno Sarris: Fine, if you also lobby for more DL slots, or else you’ll have a bench full of injured guys and fall behind on innings.

Jazzflute: What kind of numbers might we expect from Souza and Pham next year?

Eno Sarris: Pham is 30 next year!! I think .275/.350 with 18/15 full season seems like bakes regression and age in.

Eno Sarris: Not feeling it after random doctor came in and said he may not get all the way back. Probably like a back end top 100 keeper with that in mind.

Wally Zerbiak: talk to me about Luis Castillo. Pretty sexual if you ask me. But forreal, what is your 2018 outlook from here. I know you don’t LOVE the change, but he seems to be throwing it decently. Is he looking like a Severino type breakout next year?

Eno Sarris: Yes that describes his upside for sure. It’s probably the command that’s most worrisome but he’s good.

Josh: Are you buying what Luke Weaver is selling?  Is he a top 50 arm?

Eno Sarris: He has the command to be much better than the parts. I’m buying where I still can.

2-D: How long does Sanchez stay at catcher?

Eno Sarris: This is the team that went with Jorge Posada forever. I think they just keep coaching him along.

Jorge Posada Ghost: At what point are we worried about the astros?

Eno Sarris: To me, the rotation always gives me worries.

Wes: Who is the biggest name to get traded today?

Eno Sarris: If it happened, and I do think there are a couple teams that should do it, Justin Verlander.

Eno Sarris: see how those two went together.

Coach McGuirk: Any thoughts on Dylan Bundy’s future? He’s had a really up and down year (currently up). I tried to sell high on him in June but couldn’t make it happen, now I’m glad I had him for August.

Eno Sarris: Great to have now, wouldn’t bank on health forever. His big mechanical tweak (how he holds the ball in the back) doesn’t seem like enough to completely correct his past injury issues.

Chawly: Hi Eno. In last week’s chat, you mentioned liking Conforto over Benintendi because they had similar hit tools, but Conforto had more power and you didn’t think Beni had difference making speed. With Benintendi on the verge of a 20/20 season (already at 18/18), do you really think the extra 5-10 HR from Conforto are worth more than the extra 20 SB from Beni?

Eno Sarris: Well, not now.

Dave Cameronaunepetitegraine: I faced a world class fastball pitcher (windmill style) and it took me 6 swings to keep one fair. I think it’s safe to assume over a FULL season, a regular could get a couple hits. (Remember Dea Song Koo vs the Big Unit?)

Eno Sarris: Yeah I mean we’re talking about luck and 2000+ pitches.

Eno Sarris: Bird for me. Love his batted  ball mix and plate control. May have worse BA and maybe more risk due to injury but Smoak is old and has decent regression-based risk himself.

Eno Sarris: Yes. He was swinging more and more often with every month until this one.

tebow: Who should win NL MVP?

Eno Sarris: I got a vote. Dunno if I should talk about it. Seems like it was obvious until one dude got hurt for a bit.

hiya: How did the Nationals acquire so many good position players?

Eno Sarris: Took some good chances that worked out. Payed shortstop prices for Trea and got a shortstop. Bought an old 2B coming off career season and he continued doing so. Drafted a couple of studs.

Dr. Funk: Thoughts on lactose in IPA’s?

Eno Sarris: I think I might only like it in milk stouts. Even the sours with lactose are weird to me.

Just a Guy: if you’re the cubs why not take nicasio for free if you can get him?

Eno Sarris: He’ll be with a new team shortly.

Bork: Who’d have a better chance at having a successful baseball career, Tim Tebow or JP Arencebia returning from retirement?

Eno Sarris: JPA has some skills that could make him valuable on the fringe of a roster.

Moltar: Amsterdam rec: Brouwerij Troost in Westergas. Blown away by the quality there, and a very good tasting room in a cool park that used to be a factory or something. The best part of the Netherlands is that they love to hop on any American trend, so craft beer is quite popular (much moreso than in the other countries I visited). Was there a few weeks ago and got to go to a craft beer festival sponsored by another good local brewery, Oedipus. A good time had by all!

Moltar: Maybe I missed this, but how did you get your swing info? Is there a place where you can go and take swings and have that calculated?

Eno Sarris: Ah that was Zepp. They have for-sale sensors you can attach to any bat.

Eno Sarris: NOLA brewing? Crescent City? Could also get some Abita Purple Haze and Strawgator, both easy to drink locals.

Jay: Why is it that catcher’s glove movement can’t be a primary determinant for measuring a pitcher’s command?

Eno Sarris: Catchers do different things with their targets, they usually are just showing an approximate area, some hitters peak backwards and cause the catcher to be deceptive, and pitchers try to miss in a direction, so it doesn’t allow for quality of miss.

Enlightening Round: Need your thoughts Eno, Nova has been crap for almost two months, can I cut him for Junis?  Like anything you’ve seen from Junis?

Eno Sarris: Cuttable but don’t love Junis.

PTBNL: As we enter September, what are your predictions for WC teams in both leagues?

Eno Sarris: Yanks Angels, Rox DBacks.

Eno Sarris: If the pitchers are healthy, still decent.

Eno Sarris: Darvish.

PTBNL: If Price is available to make starts in the postseason, who gets bumped from the rotation, E-Rod or Porcello? Or would it make more sense to move Price to the bullpen in a Miller role, like he did in 08?

Eno Sarris: If he’s fully healthy, E-Rod. I’d imagine having a lefty like that in pen would be great, and that it’s really a question of which is healthiest.

Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: Any Players Weekend jerseys that stood out to you? I think the Twins pullover jerseys looked great in that eighties retro sense.

Moltar: Dave was real real down on Rosario yesterday. Everybody agrees that he needs to cut down on the Ks and take some walks, but do you see a lot of red flags like Dave does? Or just a 20 year old with under 100 PAs in the majors?

Eno Sarris: The other red flag is all the ground balls. but I’m willing to say he’ll make more contact in the future and is excited to show what he can do right now.

E: I have never liked pumpkin beers, and now my taste buds appear to be rejecting even Oktoberfest beers. Rough seasonals for me I guess!

Eno Sarris: Just head towards winter’s stouts.

Mike: bbref war has Gio Gonzalez as the most valuable pitcher in the league this year. That’s not defensible, is it?

Eno Sarris: I was going to write about how Gio’s strikeout rate has stayed the same while the league’s has gotten better around him. He’s almost exactly average when it comes to most peripherals…

Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: What ballpark factors play most into baseball statistics? The elevation at Coors? The Monster at Fenway? The wind in Chicago? The roof at Tropicana?

Eno Sarris: Temperature and altitude. Just happens that most ballparks are at similar altitudes.

Jay: If they ever “un-juice” the ball and teams start playing 4 outfielders, won’t pendulum swing back to being OK with contact on the ground?

Eno Sarris: Yeah I think so. 50% fly balls used to be super risky.

Moltar: Some other Dutch beer highlights from the craft beer fest I went to: Kees, Oersop, De Kromme Haring, Outlanders, and brouwerij ‘t IJ. Seriously, Amsterdam is great for craft beers!

Eno Sarris: WAR is a counting stat but you can also be negative, so if that’s what you’re asking it still makes sense.

Phil: Recently thinking of switching my go-to turkey, bacon, gouda, horseradish and arugula sandwich from standard wheat bread to toasted blueberry bread… yay or nay?

Eno Sarris: Do it once. We all need to try something different from time to time.

Eno Sarris: Had to check to see if he made a huge change to his game or something. More contact recently but no, I don’t think so. Bet it’s Burns mostly.

Slapshot: Guy in my ottoneu league just traded a bunch of prospects for Sale and Trea Turner.  I’m in a fight with him for first.  I get back Lester, Correa, Altherr, and Contreras either this weekend or early next week from the DL.  Do I need to make another move or do my DL returns give me enough of a boost?

Catt Marpenter: Do teams intentionally keep guys under the rookie limits so they can compete for ROTY next year?

Eno Sarris: *so that they can own their rights for longer.

Lyles: Besides Mazara, do you have a couple post-hype sleepers for next year?

Eno Sarris: I like JP Crawford more than projections/people.

Bob: Does Mazara still project to be a first-division corner OF (given his age) or will he more like end up league average?

Eno Sarris: Yeah still like him for more than that.

LegallyEagle: Which teams in your opinion should get verlander? I’m guessing Houston and the Angels?

Eno Sarris: Houston came to mind immediately.

Nelson: Aside from his age, what do you see in Mazara to make you think hes gonna be a star?

Eno Sarris: Two strike approach. Improving patience. Great park for him to continue to develop his power. Could have a .200 ISO / 10% BB / 18% K season soon, which should produce a great average and 25 homers or so. With a good lineup, that’s great fantasy numbers. Real life, I still see enough athleticism to also improve on iffy d numbers.

Bubbles: Dallas Keuchel was purposefully bad yesterday to try and get owners to buy tonight…. right?

Eno Sarris: Delicious. Just drink it all up.

Orange Whips: Single hopped with Nelson? So it just tastes like white wine? Any examples?

Eno Sarris: Alpine Nelson does it, but it’s hard to find that these days. I’ll think about it.

Wally Zerbiak: I think youre overreacting to Conforto health. It’s essentially a torn labrum that came form a dislocation, not from a repetitive event, as most labrum’s tear do. It’s surgery that will have him throwing 3 months out, and back to normalcy in 6 months.

Eno Sarris: Could be. I saw something about his anterior capsule being in play as well, which kills pitchers. I know he’s a hitter, but this is fairly traumatic.

Bruce: If I ever get pregnant, can I take my 100% BA stouts, boil them to get rid of the alcohol, refregerate, then put them in my sodastream to add carbonation, and have an 0% BA Stout?

Eno Sarris: I think that might taste disgusting.

bombsquad rabbi: Saw this quote the other day, wanted to share with the class: “Logic is a pretty flower that smells bad.”

Jim: Hi Eno, in a chat a couple of weeks ago, Dave Cameron said that the difference, to him, between 2-seam fastballs and sinkers was just semantics. Can you explain that? I always thought sinkers involved pushing the fastball down with your index finger or something in order to create more sink. Am I way off?

Eno Sarris: I think there’s a bit of a difference, but it’s really really hard to find it in the numbers. But look at Trevor Bauer’s two-seamer vs Marcus Stroman’s sinker for an extreme difference. Bauer’s doesn’t have sink and has mostly lateral movement, and he doesn’t try to pronate extra. Stroman throws his sinker with more pronation, almost like a hard changeup.

Eno Sarris: I will drink the poop out of Tree House Julius, and there are good ones, but man. There are some bad ones.

Bob: Underrated places to visit on Stanford campus for alum who hasn’t been back in nearly 20 years?

Eno Sarris: Leave campus and go the Rose and Crown haha. The new museum that houses the Anderson Collection is amazing, and it’s near the sculpture garden and a brisk walk to the new coffee house, which has better sandwiches these days (worse beer, improbably).

kevinthecomic: in addition to Pham being 30 next year, he also has a degenerative (i.e. it’s only going to get worse) eye condition that needs to be factored in to regression/aging curves

Moltar: The thing with lactose in beers is that unless it’s a milk stout, it needs to be very clearly labelled as containing it. Otherwise you might be poisoning people like my wife who loves IPAs but is very lactose intolerant. She’s been bit by unlabelled sours before and it just plain sucks.

Eno Sarris: Let’s treat this as a lude. Informative!

Eno Sarris: I’ll buy him for sure. As a latter half corner infielder? Yum. I think health is a factor this year and he could have a health-related bounce back.

Eno Sarris: James Loney? Just released from his Korean team.

Eno Sarris: Firestone Walker Easy Jack is my entry level recommendation. you might be able to find Toppling Goliath psuedo Sue these days. I think Lagunitas 12th of Never is decent.

Eno Sarris: Yah, in my defense I think I just missed him because of the French Canadian part when question was about African-American, but yes he’s an answer.

Bob: You liking what Puig is doing this year? Is this the new him? Can he hit 30 hr and steal 15 bags next season?

Eno Sarris: I bought Puig for this, but would still be conservative and give him something like .270/25/10 in terms of next year projections.

Eno Sarris: I thought that early in season, that they have a big two and could use a third to push the rest into the middle-of-the-series grab bag.

beers, baseball, bsg: On the subject of park factors: I was looking at Adrian Beltre’s career, and his home/away splits while he was on the Mariners show that Safeco was really cramping his style.  How much of his age-30 offensive “breakout” was due to a change of scenery?

Eno Sarris: Talked to him about that and he said he made a couple adjustments around the same time that did wonders. Maybe a confluence of factors.

Compton: If a MLB team was forced to bat Chris Hayes 600 times, wouldn’t it be optimal for him to never swing?

Eno Sarris: Yes, probably. Also, this would be a terrible year for Hayes and the team.

pirates hurdles: Team control has nothing to do with rookie limits, Eno (130ab/50ip). Control is based on service time 172 days= 1year. To control a player longer only requires a few weeks in minors, he was asking about late season guys that are nearing 130/50.

Eno Sarris: I was saying that I think it’s much more likely that any limits on PT have to do with service time, Hurdles.

Eno Sarris: WAR on FG is based on FIP, which has HR as part of it, and that’s the one place where they are pretty different.

Eno Sarris: ding ding. Howard, too, but Loney played more recently than Howard.

Eno Sarris: Yeah there’s more at first. Dom Smith coming. 8% African-American is still not great for baseball as a whole, and below national average.

Barry: Is it justifiable to bat someone like Billy Hamilton lead off (poor hitter, excellent base runner)

Eno Sarris: I think the ‘by the numbers’ says something like 6th is best spot for that.

Petr: With his delivery and stuff, can we expect Alex Claudio to put up numbers like this perennially?

Eno Sarris: I wrote about Pablo Sandoval when the Sox signed him and we had a big body aging curve in there. Bill Petti did plate discipline and showed that O-contact is a terrible aging thing, so you’d think guys like Josh Hamilton would age poorly. Zimmerman did an aging curve for speedy players vs gen pop. They’re out there.

Eno Sarris: I’d rather not sell low on Conforto. The ceiling is still so top shelf.

Francisco: How much should I worry about platoon splits with young players? What is a good wRC+ against opposite handed pitching?

Eno Sarris: You really want 1000 PA for opposite-handed splits. I’d look for drastically different gb/fb and bb/k numbers to see if it’ll really be bad.

Jay: Thoughts on Yandy Diaz recently? .500 OBP since re-call. Average LA of 16.5. it was -2 in April I believe.

Eno Sarris: If he can lift the ball, he’ll be very good. Hits it hard.
