Eno Sarris Baseball Chat 8/8/13

11:47
Eno Sarris: For some reason I want to write ola because when I see hola I read “HOLLA.” I’ll be here at the top of the hour.

12:00
Comment From bdhudson
When a buddy of mine met my another friend named Halla, he didn’t realize she was introducing herself and yelled HOLLA! It was endlessly amusing

12:01
Eno Sarris: Lyrics of the day! Themed to my high ankle sprain:

You come down, holding tight , to the railing on the side
You stayed up, left to dry, Now you’re crumbling

It’s not complex, see all of the signs flashing on
You’re just paying, for all of the bad you have done

12:01
Comment From Joe
ENOOOOOOO! Should I stash Salazar for when Fernandez hits his IP limit?

12:01
Eno Sarris: Salazar coming up on his own limit. Once Cleveland out, he’s out I bet. Also, he’s pitched 105 or so innings, last year he was at like 85. So he could really get shut down whenever.

12:02
Comment From Oscar
Chances that Carlos Martinez stays in rotation are __ and if he does he is a top __ pitcher.

12:02
Eno Sarris: 60-70%? Not only will they rest Miller some to avoid innings limits and get him healthy, but Westbrook is sucking.

12:02
Comment From ar
so…. salazar?

12:02
Eno Sarris: yup

12:02
Comment From Guest
errg, should the yankees make a play for chase headly? mccan? WEITERS????

12:03
Eno Sarris: You mean in the offseason? None of those guys are clearing waivers. Headley in an offensive park would be nice.

12:03
Comment From tylersnotes
i joined my first fantasy football league, and have been looking for a rotographs-style resource for football. Any ideas? Also, is there a fantasy football version of lucas duda, or is lucas duda the fantasy football version of a baseball player?

12:03
Eno Sarris: The latter. And I like The Fantasy Fix and The Fake Football.

12:03
Comment From Justin
Crazy question rife with assumptions: Assuming(!!!) Ike Davis turns his life around, and Wilmer Flores is the truth, do the Mets try the David Wright Second Base Experiment? What about shortstop? Am I crazy?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Flores to second probably more likely. If Wright’s arm is a little iffy, Flores’ is a lot iffy.

12:04
Comment From Pete
Would you trade Wil Myers and JJ Hardy for Jacoby Ellsbury?

12:04
Eno Sarris: In a redraft I would. In a keeper, I’d rather have the younger OF not dependent on his wheels.

12:04
Comment From BOO-URNS
BRAVES? BRAVES

12:04
Eno Sarris: Braves.

12:04
Comment From STiVo
Ike Davis!

12:05
Eno Sarris: I’ve been consistent — I think he can be a little like Ryan Howard. Power, patience, more glove, also bad against lefties. Lots of strikeouts even when he’s going well, because of that hitch.

12:05
Comment From John
Two trades yesterday in a 15 team 5×5 (OBP) where I need OBP/R/RBI. I gave A-Gonz, LaRoche, Tillman for Cutch, Chris Johnson, and my waiver pickup of Henderson Alvarez (he’ll be replaced by Matt Moore when activated). Good move or trading just for the sake of trading?

12:06
Eno Sarris: You came out ahead, but I’m not sure you did in the categories you need, which is strange. Johnson does > LaRoche though I think. I used to hate on him, but Johnson goes oppo, has earned his high BABIP.

12:06
Comment From Northsider

12:07
Eno Sarris: hurts

12:07
Comment From Jim Bob Duggar
How’s the kid?

12:07
Eno Sarris: blows my mind daily

12:07
Comment From bdhudson
Dropped Ernesto Frieri without picking anyone else up because I wanted him to know he was being dropped. I felt good about it, then bad because I realized I’m insane.

12:08
Eno Sarris: Yeah he has no idea, nor does he care. But, whatever floats your boat

12:08
Comment From bdhudson
Wheeler to the bullpen soon you think?

12:08
Eno Sarris: You mean as a long term thing or as an innings-limit thing? Maybe to limit innings.

12:08
Comment From LarryA

12:08
Comment From Internet User Since 1995
What do you think of the spate of session IPAs (Lagunitas, Founders (I think), etc.)? Seems like a good development to me.

12:09
Eno Sarris: I do like them. For summer days. Had someone tell me recently though: I don’t want to have to drink so many beers. would rather drink fewer, stronger ones. I see both sides, at different times. But summer Saturdays? session/saison me.

12:09
Comment From Guest
Please pick two of the three, with an emphasis on me needing pitcher winsโ€”โ€”1) Ervin Santana (at home) vs Peavyโ€”โ€”2) Lackey (on the road) vs Shieldsโ€”โ€”3) Gerrit Cole (at home) vs. Jose Fernandez

12:09
Eno Sarris: Cole. Lackey.

12:10
Comment From Boom Shakalaka
Would you add Carlos Ruiz over Raul Ibanez ROS 12 team roto for a Utility position? Ruiz would make for my 2nd catcher.

12:10
Eno Sarris: Do not play a catcher at utility.

12:10
Comment From Miketron
Would you take Salazar over Erasmo ROS?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Just don’t think the Indian has the innings over the Mariner.

12:10
Comment From hooha
Anthony Rizzo’s 2nd half – princess or pumpkin?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Princess. Fun to call Rizzo a princess.

12:11
Comment From The Oriole Bird
It doesn’t seem there’s much to this Henry Urrutia character. Correct?

12:11
Eno Sarris: Makes contact, not much power, empty batting average.

12:11
Comment From Tim
Iโ€™m very happy with Melancon but I need to make sure he is a closer during my playoffs starting 9/9. Do I take up a roster spot with Frieri, Betancourt or Putz as insurance or do you think Grilli will be on the shelf until after 9/22.

12:12
Eno Sarris: I bet Grilli just barely makes it back because the Pirates don’t need him until the playoffs. Lots of moving parks there though. If you can put Betancourt on your DL, you don’t waste a full roster spot.

12:12
Comment From Maxamuz

Luca Duda loves 'merica

12:12
Comment From STiVo
Will Rutledge be back at all in 2013?

12:13
Eno Sarris: DJLM’s having his obviously-coming regression. There’s a chance. And I don’t hate him as much as many. He still has power and speed, and plenty of people have succeeded (especially in Colorado) with that skill set and no plate discipline.

12:13
Comment From bdhudson
So, Jordan Zimmerman….i’m getting a little concerned. Should I be?

12:13
Eno Sarris: The BABIP was going to regress. Hopefully the control doesn’t, too.

12:13
Comment From Chris
Hi Eno, have you tried the Stone R&R Coconut Ipa its not too coconutty. After losing David Wright for the ros I should trade Lee for Machado and maybe Masterson or pick up Lowrie and stand pat im in 1st in a shallow 10 man roto

12:14
Eno Sarris: Have not, do want, will find. You didn’t lose Wright for the RoS, I don’t think. You’ll get September. I’d stand pat with a pickup.

12:14
Comment From hooha
why do they call the beginning of the hour the top of the hour? Shouldn’t the beginning be the bottom and the end of the hour be the top?

12:15
Eno Sarris: Think of a clock. Both could be top I guess.

12:15
Comment From The Oriole Bird
Did you consider using any metrics other than HR/BiP for your “steroid era” article? Seems like a good one to pick… just wondering.

12:15
Eno Sarris: I didn’t like ISO because there are speed effects. SLG is the same. I wonder if HR/BiP for the top 10% of the league is very different. The composition of the average HR/BiP might be interesting.

12:16
Comment From Kenley Rae Jansen
Do you see any SP’s coming up from the minors who could be in a position to make an impact ROS?

12:16
Eno Sarris: I actually still think Trevor Bauer has a chance to be relevant, but you still want to watch him on your bench at best. Late-season young SPs are iffy. They usually are hitting their innings limits, and often come up as RPs.

12:16
Comment From hooha
I picked up Aroid to try and eke some value out of him at UT spot while his appeal is pending. How long do you think he’ll be active and what do you expect from him?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I think he’ll play the rest of the year. They’ve been talking like November is when the hearing will be. I think he can .260/20 sort of pace.

12:17
Comment From bdhudson
This almost feels weird to ask, but do you think most people (fans and even media members to a degree) under-appreciate how good Trout is?

12:17
Comment From The Oriole Bird
So, Mike Trout can’t actually be improving….. can he?!

12:18
Eno Sarris: He’s young enough to get better, and he’s scary good. I wonder if more people need to watch him. Because it’s like watching a quarterback-slash-linebacker play baseball. Big, fast, with finesse.

12:18
Comment From John
Eno, Im going for it… NL only (although we kept the astros bc of minor leaguers and such) 13 team, standard roto… traded wheeler ($5), rendon ($5), soler (RML), k suzuki ($5) and uggla ($17) for Zimmermann ($27), McCann($17), Phillips ($26) and Fowler ($28)… I need to improve my batting average as it is the only real category I can move in (in first, but 2nd place team is close), and whip… i punted saves… will I regret this?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Since no closers involved, assuming you punted closers long ago. I think you might feel the Rendon loss most, but at least you got a bevy of vets for the stretch run.

12:19
Comment From Kenley Rae Jansen
Rank em as keepers going forward 10 tm mixed. Domonic Brown $7, Anthony Rizzo $6, Ian Desmond $6.

12:20
Eno Sarris: Move Dsmond to the front because he’s a shortstop. I might move Rizzo ahead of brown too, but I want more info.

12:20
Comment From Ronald McDonaldson
What are your thoughts of Moustakas ROS?

12:20
Eno Sarris: .270/20 type of pace.

12:20
Comment From Zach
Chances of Pujols coming back and being productive from the bench for me by mid September (H2H playoffs). Same question for Kluber only he’ll be starting for me.

12:20
Eno Sarris: Six weeks for Kluber makes it hard. Can’t really answer definitively on Pujols, but I’ll speculate that he’s done.

12:20
Comment From bdhudson
Will the pitching grip series become a regular feature? (he asked optimistically)

12:21
Eno Sarris: It’s tough because no pictures allowed in the clubhouse, so I have to go somewhere to get them. Kyle Lohse let me take pictures of his vulcan changeup grip, slider, old curveball grip and new one, though, so that’ll be in there next week. And yes, I’ll keep trying to get pitchers to show them to me!

I was offered J Upton and Segura for Tulo and Kemp. Do it?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Nah. Tulo best in deal. Maybe think about in keeper since Tulo hard to own.

Is Medlen a keeper in a 16 team dynasty league?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Yes. I think he’s fine. Not an ace. Probably never was. But can fill out a staff.

12:24
Comment From Gila Monster
Ugh, Weeks is going to the DL. Who should replace Weeks? Rendon,Rayburn,Gyorko,Dozier are options. OBP,SLG,NetSB league…. If I have HanRam,Panda, and Hardy filling 3rd,IF, and SS, I should look to flop one of them for a 2nd basemen right and use Hosmer or Dunn at the IF slot, correct?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Probably should look to trade, but Rendon and Gyorko are interesting to me. Maybe Gyorko because I think he makes more contact and is adjusting back to league a bit.

12:26
Comment From EEEEE
if i tell you a player sucks. do you think of him as replacement level, or below replacement?

12:26
Eno Sarris: It’s actually hard to stay in baseball if your true talent is below RL. So normally think RL.

12:26
Comment From zack
Eno, would you be in favor of a pro arod support group? Someone has to defend history’s greatest monster

12:26
Eno Sarris: People shouldn’t forget how AWESOME he was in Seattle and Texas. Big shortstop that could punish the ball and make plays in the field.

12:27
Comment From ValLowe
What is the Ben Zobrist of foods? Something I can eat for breakfast one day, throw in my

Yankees trade for Harvey and Machado and Trout and Harper???

12:28
Eno Sarris: Okay you got me, that was pretty silly.

12:28
Comment From Rubby of the Rose
That Bruery White Oak I asked you about was crazy. Big, oily yet highly carbonated wheatwine. High abv (11.5?) but not hot. Flavors like tropical fruit and bourbon or something. Not their best but worth a go.

12:28
Eno Sarris: They make some crazy beers. Almost like a Mikkeller in America.

12:28
Comment From Brian E.
Better buy low: Dexter Fowler or Aramis Ramirez?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Don’t love either actually. If in OBP league, Fowler. If I knew Aramis was healthy, him in 5×5.

12:29
Comment From The Oriole Bird
What’s your take on the effect of pitch framing?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Small effect, rendered somewhat important over thousands of pitches. Also, even a couple extra strikes a game can be huge.

12:29
Comment From Oscar
So say C. Martinez sticks. Is he a top 35?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Ground baller with a great park and team behind him, great stuff, not great K/9. Don’t think he has Zimm-like control. Could Garcia with a little bit better WHIP?

12:30
Comment From JJ
Change of scenery for Ian Kennedy make him 12 team mixed worthy? Over E Jax?

12:30
Eno Sarris: yes.

Has Michael Wacha slipped down the SP depth chart?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Looks like it. Might be innings-related.

12:30
Comment From zack
Is Josh Hamilton a buy low candidate next season or will he continue to display Delmonesque plate discipline minus contact skills?

12:31
Eno Sarris: I’m not that into him going forward. O-contact was a skill of his, and it doesn’t age well. Panda and Puig owners should remember this, although Puig has a ways to go before it’s a real problem.

12:31
Comment From TB
Thoughts on Bucholtz and Cobb. Do they come back and pitch great, okay or sucky ROS?

12:31
Eno Sarris: More confidence in Cobb.

12:31
Comment From Timmy
Assuming the thumb is okay, can Villar lead MLB in steals ROS?

12:31

Fans got treated to a rare joy in the LAD/STL game last night as Catcher Rob Johnson took the mound to square off against RP Paco Rodriguez. JOHNSON THREW 90MPH! Struck that fool of a RP out. God I hate LA.

12:32

Who’s a good trade target for someone as mysterious as Junior Lake? I want to sell that dude.

12:33
Eno Sarris: why not look across the bench and get someone like Rizzo? more pedigree, better peripherals, down BABIP?

12:33
Comment From Rated Rookie
If Brett Lawrie continues to hit AND is Toronto’s 2B next season, where would you rank him? Above or below Gyorko?

12:33
Eno Sarris: Above. More adjustment behind him.

Mr.Doolittle or Mr.Cook rest of the season?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Doolittle does more.

12:34
Comment From JT
I know that Jesus saves, but this year, it kinda really feels like that would only be a three-month appointment. Who is a good bullpen stash for a hurting Wilhemsen/Veras owner? All of their replacements are gone or unownable.

12:35
Eno Sarris: Could buy into Houston, Fields looks like he’s all alone in a dark place. Blake Parker pitching better than Pedro Strop and Kevin Gregg has returned to Kevin Gregg-ness. Dane De La Rosa has a fighter’s chance.

12:35
Comment From Marty
Why do a lot of advanced-stat analysts cite GIDP? It’s as situational dependent as RBIs or sac flies.

12:35
Eno Sarris: They should just take the “IDP” part out.

12:35
Comment From Maxamuz
What if I had multiple handles and no one quite knew who I really was? I could be so many people.

What do you think mike trout’s prime is going to look kike?

12:36
Eno Sarris: This. Plus a little power? Maybe subtract a little speed.

12:36
Comment From Timmy
Can you talk about Chase Headley? People continue to rank him in Top-10 ROS. When is the watershed for those of us who need to be ruthless in 10-team roto?

12:36
Eno Sarris: I still like him, but like this: .270 20/15. I agree that’s borderline in a ten-teamer, but rosterable all the same.

12:37
Comment From mr. anonymous
robbie grossman. seems like he’s found the groove during this hot streak, any chance he can maintain relevance in deeper leagues?

12:37
Eno Sarris: He’s cutting the Ks a bit, but at 24% I still think .250 is about the best BA he’ll show. Still, league-average batting average with speed and some power… definitely a deep leaguer.

12:37
Comment From Mork From Ork

12:37
Eno Sarris: In that order.

Bartolo or Danny Salazar ROS for H2h playoffs? (5×5)

12:38
Eno Sarris: I doubt you’ll want either when it’s time for the playoffs.

12:38
Eno Sarris: Salazar probably sitting by then, Colon throwing 86.

12:38
Comment From Rated Rookie
More worrisome: Archer’s forearm or Moore’s elbow?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Damn, both can lead to TJ. Moore stopped throwing his changeup before he reported the injury…But changeups are supposedly safer than sliders… I’ll go Archer more worrisome with all those sliders.

12:39
Comment From Marty
Do you think Michael Young or Adam Dunn clears waivers and get traded? who are the favs? Gotta be texas, right?

12:40

Should I start Beachy tomorrow at home vs. Marlins? (I need quality starts, but don’t want to ding the ERA too badly.)

12:40
Eno Sarris: Yes. that’s a great matchup.

12:40
Comment From Eric
How much do you think Kemp will produce ROS? I just got him off the waiver wire in my league and I’m feeling pretty damn happy about that at the moment

12:41
Eno Sarris: Getting him free means it almost doesn’t matter. At worst, I think he’ll have some speed for you. Maybe the shoulder is finally better. It was looking better before the ankle thing.

12:41
Comment From juan pierres mustache
My general reaction to session IPAs is to feel like they aren’t really IPAs. Tasty though

Would you start Salazar next week at Target Field in a 10-team mixed?

12:42

12:42
Comment From Swing and a Miss Puiggy
Can I trust Lord Farquhaad for the h2h playoffs or will that plan come up short ;)?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Actually I think so. Medina and Capps still have bad platoon splits, and Wilhelmsen is starting now.

12:42
Eno Sarris: Besides, no reason to trade for a closer.

12:42
Comment From JT
Brad Miller: a good bet in the future to be a mixed league, shallow league starter, or have I just gone SS crazy, talking myself into a player at a shallow position?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Not a great bet, but a decent one. I’d roster him in any dynasty league.

12:43
Comment From Dingoe
Is Mike Napoli droppable in 10-team? Fighting for a title. Avila, Mesoraco, Martin, Gattis available.

12:43
Eno Sarris: nah.

12:43
Comment From Marty
I think MLB should make suspended players give $1 to charity for every team that they’re owned in on Yahoo and ESPN.

12:43
Eno Sarris: I actually think their salary goes to charity, and that’s probably a bigger number in most cases.

12:44
Comment From Marty
Several times this year, Davey Johnson has mentioned something “bothered” one of his starters (last night, Zim’s neck). Each time pitcher has said “really? news to me”. What gives…?

12:44
Eno Sarris: He’s just trying to give them an excuse, maybe.

12:44
Comment From Spencer
If your kid blows your mind daily, you should turn the tables and do the same to them. When they ask what something is, don’t give them some Laymen’s term explanation. Go all out. Rainbows, for instance, are a fun place to start.

12:44
Eno Sarris: At 15 months, almost everything I say blows his mind.

12:44
Comment From LarryA
Why are the cubs the only team to play so many day games? I understand about the tradition, but couldnt other teams succeed playing more day games too?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Actually if you don’t have a destination ball park like Wrigley, I think day games are bum deal.

Three scientists are hunting deer. The first, a biologist, spots the deer and whispers, “I know exactly where to hit the deer so it drops in one shot.” The biologist fires, missing 2 feet to the left. The second scientist, a physicist, spots the deer and whispers, “You’re forgetting about trajectory” and fires away, missing 2 feet to the right. The statistician screams “GOT HIM!!”

12:46
Comment From Young Farquhar
Try not to throw up (because i don’t want to bring that pain upon you but….) please rank ROS: Junior Lake, Daniel Nava, Raul Ibanez, Cameron Maybin

12:47
Eno Sarris: that order, although Maybin really hard to place.

12:47
Comment From LarryA
Are there any very good fruity saisons/ales? Everyone Ive tried just seems gimmicky and gross.

Comment From TKDC
R/HR/RBI/SB/OBP – who’s should I start at Util. going forward, Gardner or McCann?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Both. Gardner when both are playing and Gardner is not facing a lefty, but you’ll need both.

12:48
Comment From zack
Jeremy Bonderman is back with the tigers again. Thoughts?

12:49
Eno Sarris: Some use as an SP-eligible RP that might get some holds. I have a league where this matters.

12:49

Do you expect George Springer to be exposed for the hacker he is at the MLB level?

12:49

12:49

Another ‘steroid era’ question, have average park factors changed over the course of the data as parks have become smaller and did you consider factoring this in?

12:49
Eno Sarris: It should have gone in the annotations, but I did talk about it in the piece. Coors itself can change things, and then there’s Arizona. Both new parks.

12:50
Eno Sarris: And someone said I should go back to the beginning of baseball, but I respectfully disagree. The polo grounds used to be like 500 feet to center. PEOPLE SAT IN CENTER FIELD.

12:50
Comment From Swing and a Miss Puiggy
I believe in Brad Ziegler and his 73% GB rate….tell me I am crazy

12:51
Eno Sarris: Problem is his platoon splits, and the platoon splits of submariners before him. Also, ground balls can find holes.

12:51
Eno Sarris: Strikeouts very very rarely find holes.

Eno Sarris: I just look at the stuff and want to keep him. But it better be a deep keeper setting, and you’ll need to be able to roster him when he’s not pitching soon.

12:52
Comment From Christopher
Am I alone in thinking there need to be *more* bat flips and home-run watching, and more shoot-em-up pistol gestures from pitchers? Because that would be awesome.

I’m out of it in my keeper league this season, and a couple of teams are hammering me for Harper. I’m considering it if I can improve my team overall, but what is a good return for him?

What did you think of the Teheran-Harper episode? Youngster rivals growing old together in the MLB?

Comment From Jazzy Jim
Should umpires look at the effects of pitch framing and make and effort to correct…it basically means that they are getting fooled.

1:03
Eno Sarris: Disagree. Most framers tell me that the main thing they are trying to do is give umpires a great look at the ball. If umpires should correct anything, it’s the lefty strike zone being different than the righty one.

Alot of question about how many top prospects it would take to land Stanton, but if you were the Rangers/Pirates/etc GM, would you do it? Is Stanton possibly extremely overhyped?

1:05
Eno Sarris: A few too many Ks, injury question marks perhaps. He could be. But the power is so legit, and rarer these days, that yeah I think someone should have made a play at him. Particularly the Pirates, who have had a better time with pitchers than hitters, IMO.

1:05

They say you always take the hitter, but how early in a dynasty draft do you take a hound stud like Harvey or Fernandez?

Can we expect this kind of performance from Jose Fernandez throughout his career, or is he overachieving? I’d like to know what kind of pitcher this kid is going to blossom into in 3-4 years, assuming he can stay healthy.

1:08
Comment From Young Farquhar
In fantasy basketball, ESPN puts up a season schedule skeleton and its useful to see matchups at certain points in the season (especially playoffs). I have NEVER seen an article that featured this analysis. It is truly prevalent with starting pitching against certain lineups but also hitters in certain ball parks. I would like to see this analysis weighed on more. I mean with 5 guy rotations it is very plausible to predict starters ahead of time which would support upside for particular players. I just think it would lead to more accurate predictions and might land you someone under the radar with huge dividends..

1:09
Eno Sarris: You need to read more RotoGraphs. At this point in the season, I’ve predicted out pitcher’s schedules to talk about their value, and we always have stuff about streaming for steals (against catchers). But yeah, I guess we could do some stuff graphically.

1:09

1:10

Danny Duffy… was last night’s start a good sign or a bad sign? Definitely one of the stranger lines I’ve seen from a pitcher.

1:10
Eno Sarris: Bad, I think. He gets Ks, that’s good, but the walks were a bit much, and he hasn’t really found the zone in the minors. Still has ace-level stuff, but everything else (sequencing, command, control) still missing.

1:10
Comment From Daniel W
Can you explain how waiver deals work? Like do teams have an agreement of, oh, we’re going to try to get this guy through waivers so you can pick him up? Or is it more luck of the draw?

1:12
Eno Sarris: Team with expensive veteran puts him on waivers. Team that needs expensive veteran claims him and hopes that they win the claim (worse teams get first dibs.) If they do, the two teams have a couple days to figure out a deal. But anything on a 40-man roster going to the team with expensive veterans has to clear waivers too, so it’s usually a PTBNL or a low-level prospect.

Why isn’t Cole missing more bats?

1:18
Eno Sarris: No idea. I think he’s throwing the fastball “too much” for Ks. But it’s giving him GBS and it’s probably keeping him healthy. As he ages, he can start mixing the breaking stuff in more and miss more bats. The stuff certainly looks like it deserves more whiffs.

Should I acquire Andrew Cashner? I now sliders usually lead to TJS thx to you, but he throws hard and i know velo is v important. Thoughts?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Well it’s not ‘usually’ just ‘maybe more often’ with sliders and TJ. With Cash, the problem is that he’s just not been healthy in general. He also sacrificed his slider velocity to stay healthy this year, and it killed his Ks. Now the slider velocity is creeping back. What does that mean? Don’t pay much.

Why doesn’t anyone talk about Tony Cingrani? Lots of BB, but stats would suggest he is very tough to hit. Has only started 13 games and is a top 50 SP.

Eno Sarris: They could.

I know you had a great interview with Shark, but are you worried about his velocity? It is low 90s instead of upper-mid 90’s like last year/beginning of season.

1:43
Eno Sarris: Hadn’t seen that! That is a bit worrisome. Long season, I guess.

niese or vogelsong going to be ok when they get back?

1:44
Eno Sarris: Both barely usable. Mixed league RL.

I’ve been watching Hosmer–I’m no scout–but I’ve seen him take some serious uppercut swings. Mostly in “hitters’ counts.” Anecdotal but I do question your questioning of his swing plane.

1:45
Eno Sarris: Maybe he alternates, and goes for broke in hitter’s counts. When seen in aggregate, GB/FB mix is a good measure of swing plane, and his is very GB-heavy. Then again, I think the ideal swing plane is somewhere on the GB-side of 1 GB per FB, so he’s not far off.

Buster Olney just said “people within the industry” view Votto’s deal as a mistake. Do I fight him?

1:46
Eno Sarris: I think most big deals turn out to be mistakes.

Comment From jack the dog
for next week nova vs angels, niese @ sd, or voglesong @wash

1:46
Eno Sarris: I think Nova is rosterable, like what he’s doing. NOt the greatest matchup, if you can keep him rostered and start Niese, that’s better.

Comment From Sadwick
Muscle mass =/= speed. There are plenty of football linemen with way more muscle mass than Usain Bolt, but there’s not even a snowball’s chance in hell they catch him in a footrace. Bonds is a good example, he got a lot slower as he put on muscle mass. It’s got a great deal to do with what muscle mass is gained.

1:48
Eno Sarris: A bit of why I went that way. I went with HR/BIP because steroids also help contact, and I wanted to try and control for contact a bit. Look at Everth. Stole same amount of bases, but last year-plus his contact rate has clearly gone through the roof.

Comment From Gila Monster
WhY do people even try to make historical baseball comparison given rule changes, field changes, ball/bat changes, pitching development..etc. Judge players relative to era. Not history. The steroid era was one of them. Just like Babe Ruth wasn’t hitting 89mph sliders out of AT&T like Bonds was.

1:48
Eno Sarris: Because baseball.

What the hack has happened to Coco Crisp’s productivity? He can’t even get on base at a decent clip …

In case you were wondering what my favorite quote from the Dabney Coleman movie “Short Time” is, its “Burt, your yogurt!” See you thought it was going to be Dabney Coleman, but I went with Matt Frewer.

One time, I ordered a chicken sandwich, and I think the waitress misheard me, because she asked me how I’d like my eggs cooked. So I said, incubated.

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.

Why are Eno’s chat transcripts always cut off early? Every week this is an issue.
