Eno Sarris: Peavy?

JD15: What do you think Moncada’s situation is going to be for the rest of the season? Platoon 3B? Based on his MiLB track record, what can we expect as far as performance goes?

Eno Sarris: I was thinking a good case scenario for him this year was a Sano plus speed, but I can’t see where the PT is. He hasn’t played in LF and how’s he going to split time with Shaw?

Shane: How you decide what to write about? I’m an inspiring baseball writer, and I always have trouble thinking of ideas. Do you have any tips? Much appreciated!

Eno Sarris: I have some crutches. Things I can do to find ‘the best/biggest/smallest X’ which can be an interesting to people. The biggest improvement in changeup movement, the biggest change in breaking ball usage, that sort of thing. But you can also see singular moments in baseball. Today I have a piece going up about Span vs Greinke in that game where Greinke only got one strikeout. That’s only happened to him once before, in his rookie year, so even if I didn’t have the quote from him, I’d be interested in just poking around the game logs for that game.

Young Jeezy: would you stream Desclafani this weekend vs the Cardinals?

Eno Sarris: Yes.

Youppi!: Ben Revere – 340 PAs, -1.0 WAR; Trea Turner 195 PAs, 2.2 WAR. While the wins in the NL East are likely irrelevant, had the Nationals not waited so damn long, how many more over the year could Turner have contributed? Does he stick in CF?

Eno Sarris: In their defense, it was obvious that they distrusted his defense at short — when they first called him up, he played short, and they picked Espinosa over him there — so it wasn’t obvious at first where he should play.

FGM: Would you trust either or Kuhl or Vogelsong v. Stl next week?

Eno Sarris: in deeper leagues, or streaming situations where raw stats were more important to me than ERA/WHIp, maybe.

Marc: A couple starts in now for Luke Weaver–what are you seeing? Worth a keeper slot next season in a deep league?

Eno Sarris: Good fastball command, great change, still waiting to see on that curve. Nice to see he trusts it, but still hasn’t gotten a single whiff on the pitch.

Belted: Hey Eno! Had a great time at the Pitch Talks on Monday. Did you drink the beer that was available at the Independent, or did you supply your own?

Eno Sarris: Hah. I paid for Lagunitas IPA on tap instead of drinking the free Anchor Steam in the back.

The Bosch: Is Ivan Nova legit now? What was holding him back on the Yankees–his K/BB looked solid all year, but something must have changed, right?

Eno Sarris: League changed mostly. He’s throwing fewer sinkers and more four-seamers and curves, but he’s still a two pitch guy if you don’t count the fastballs separately. Not walking anyone, not giving up homers like he was, I think he’s mostly the same guy but in a better situation.

Ray: Kiermaier or Andrew Toles ROS?

Eno Sarris: KK for me.

Daniel: Is Andrew Toles going to be a solid league average player?

Eno Sarris: Maybe, but right now there’s a decent crowd in the outfield in LA.

John: Is it possible the letters on your birth certificate got jumbled, and your parents actually meant to name you Sea Norris?

Eno Sarris: I like that interlude.

Sonny: Hey Eno, recommend a saison to pair with tomorrow’s Moncada debut I can find in New England?

Eno Sarris: I like the Mystic ones, and that seems appropriate.

Phantom of the Chakras: You think Deolis ‘you don’t know the Javy’ Guerra gets first crack at saves in LA, such as they are?

Eno Sarris: Bit of a tire fire down there. He doesn’t have the velocity or ks or swinging strikes that are normally associated with a closer… JC Ramirez has the holds and the velo but where are the Ks. Ditto Valdez. I liked Morin once on Ks and he’s getting whiffs, but he has fewer holds… Might say JCR.

Erik: If a team was built “backwards”, with offense-first guys up the middle and defense-first guys in the corners (think guys like Cespedes in CF, maybe Matt Duffy at 3B) would the team be expected to do any better or worse than their projections? Would such a team be any more or less expensive to build?

Eno Sarris: Offense is still expensive, so it might not be cheaper. And, really, the free agent market is so limited. Mostly, you draft good players, find them places to play, and sign anyone that is a bargain and find them a place to play. I don’t think teams have the luxury of planning out things that much.

Nick: So Seth lugo has this inane spin rate on his curve? That’s kind of random. What does it mean exactly and for him as a pitching prospect?

Eno Sarris: insane! But maybe inane depending on how you feel about spin rate. But high spin rate curves are good, and Lugo’s is one of those that looks like a fastball and then disappears downward. He couldn’t throw it much in Vegas, so his numbers took a dive. I think he’s actually decent, but he might need something beyond FB/CB.

Eno Sarris: Really nervous. Hill at least will be good when in. Might put Wright last, but what happened to those double-digit swinging strike rates Skaggs was putting up in the minors.

Eno Sarris: No, not really, but fifth starters are cobbled together, not usually bought.

Biscuit: Homie you starting Jose Urena today against the Mets? Yes, my fantasy season has become a desperate situation.

Eno Sarris: If they can’t hit Urena… sigh.

Eric: Scott Schebler has been heating up of late. Is he worth owning in OPS leagues?

Eno Sarris: He can be a Grichuk, low OBP high SLG guy. Exit velo king with poor discipline, contact skills.

Kris: So I’m in second this year going for a championship and I just dealt Moncada for Jose Bautista. A keep 6 format, so Moncada would’ve been on the line to keep anyways. Did I mess up?

Eno Sarris: I don’t think so. It’s probably like a 5-10% proposition that he plays his way into a top 75 situation in baseball in the next four weeks. As great as he might be later.

Fire Kevin Cash: Is Nick Franklin showing himself to be a contributing player who can stay in the bigs a full year? Switch-hitting, 6/7 position utility running 161 wRC+ second half.

Eno Sarris: Finally curbed that K% by cutting the reach%. He usually had success with a new level if he was given time, and if he doesn’t need to be a shortstop… Yeah I think he’ll have a job next year.

Erik: The Royals, Yankees, Mariners, and Marlins all have about a 5% chance at making the playoffs. Which would you be least surprised to see make a run and slip in at the last second?

Eno Sarris: Mariners actually. Miranda is a capable five and everyone in the rotation is (sorta) healthy and could go off (maybe).

Jimbo Swanson: Too many keepers. Flip for draft picks to non imposing teams or throw back and re draft next year? I’m leaning towards draft picks….

Eno Sarris: Flip for picks but maybe keep one of your more favoritest ones that you might want back.

Dock Ellis: Eno, I just moved to Denver and I’m having problems spending hours gawking at all the new available beer that I can buy. What should my approach be at the beer store so I don’t blow my entire budget/spend my entire day trying to pick which beers to buy?

Eno Sarris: Remember that you have to drink them in order and freshness is important. So 1/3 IPA, 1/3 sour, 1/3 stout.

Erik: Do you expect definitive answers to what is the biggest cause of arm injuries to come out in the next few years? I see basically every pitch, as well as velocity and total usage, cited as the primary cause. Is this a solvable problem?

Eno Sarris: No.

Bob: Think Alex Reyes stays in the St. Louis rotation and worth a pickup off the wire?

Eno Sarris: No idea, but just the possibility is worth picking up for his Friday start against the Reds. #fire

Eric: Any chance Lewis Brinson comes up in September?

Eno Sarris: Their OF is crowded and they’d probably rather give the guys up in the OF now a long look than mess with a 22-year-old that’s been up and down.

Joe: Finnegan looks great right? Second highest swinging strike to Scherzer among qualified starters in last 14 days…

Eno Sarris: Huh. Finally throwing that changeup more. 20% over last two starts. And the pitch has 20% whiffs over 359 thrown. Velo even back up to average for a lefty. I look away for a while and he makes a comeback huh.

Eno Sarris: League average play between stints on the DL. Perhaps for a new team.

Eno Sarris: I like wet hop season — Lagunitas Born Yesterday, Founders, Hoppin Frog all have excellent wet hop beers. Other than that… eh. Maybe a few more stouts in the cold.

Eno Sarris: I get a little tired of some of their IPA line, which can be hard to distinguish from each other. But Aunt Sally, Born Yesterday, Sucks, and their flagship IPA are all p good.

Eno Sarris: As a family member you’d have to jump out your chair and say something when that name was floated.

HappyFunBall: Tyson Ross’ shoulder is barking in rehab. Did I waste a DL spot all season? Or is there any hope that he’s a useful September player?

Eno Sarris: I gave up and dropped him after nursing him all year.

Dan: When I’m looking at change in a player–take swinging strike rate–how can I compare that player’s change to league or other changes?

Eno Sarris: The “league” toggle on the leaderboards will give you the league averages, that helps a ton.

Johnny5Alive: im torn… mets fan, like that they are getting back in it… but you get the wild card, you throw thor play in game, then you might not even still be in a series when he can pitch again… id almost rather not get there at all than go out like that

Eno Sarris: You always want to get in. Then, for the future, we rally baseball for a three-game Wild Card series with a little less spring training.

Dock Ellis: Any idea how the dropped third strike rule came about? I’ve always been curious as to why that’s a rule?

Eno Sarris: Actually I think early baseball had it that after strike three everyone was a runner. So, the rule change was actually that a caught strike three was good enough to get the runner out.

Eric Weinstein: So far Josh Bell has 10bbs to 4Ks. Do you think that is just noise from a 16 game sample, or suggests elite plate discipline?

Eno Sarris: Reach rate is tiny, swings like a madman on everything in the zone. He’s been great. Might be better than his minor league numbers, for whatever reason.

JT: What’s Byron Buxton’s new ceiling (I didn’t have time to listen to the podcast)?

Eno Sarris: I was saying ceiling is more Carlos Gomez, median more Cameron Maybin.

Joe: Manaea’s swinging strike rate is impressive but what do I make of back injury going forward?

Eno Sarris: Big boy, going to be a good pick next year, dunno about the rest of this year.

Joe: How many more starts does Urias get?

Eno Sarris: One?

Kiaan: Eno, I write a blog on baseball (and football) in the UK and literally nobody cares. Do you get many aspiring writers from outside the States? Anything I can do to help myself?

Eno Sarris: Interesting! At least you have an angle. I think at the very least you have to be all over any European prospects and players in either league. If you developed a relationship with a Euro scout in either sport, maybe spotted a prospect yourself or had a well-timed piece with an interview or a breakdown of a player as he debuted in America, that would be a way to get noticed.

Colin: Who is a good comp. for C.J. Cron?

Eno Sarris: I mean… is he really that far from Trumbo? Better contact skills not as much power. Justin Turner with less defensive value?

Chris: Can Andrew Triggs earn a 2017 rotation spot this season?

Eno Sarris: yes, if the changeup looks legit. If you’re an A right now, you’re fighting for next year’s job.

Wakawaka: What makes a cutter a cutter? If you look at the Pitch FX data on “cutters”, you’ll see some with arm-side movement, some with glove-side movement, and some with more horizontal movement than some four-seamers. Sometimes they have more drop than two-seamers, sometimes they don’t. What is a cutter?

Eno Sarris: They impossible to study because some are baby sliders, some are cut fastballs, and some are straight four-seamers. Ideally, I think it should basically have a little bit of arm-side cut, and less drop than a sinker.

Laung Bahls: Can I get some chat help coming up with an appropriately awesome Team name with Mookie and Altuve? Struggling here but I know there’s a gem out there

Eno Sarris: Mookie seems to be a guy that should just go by his first name like Madonna. Altuve though. Needs something that connotes great power in a little package without being rude.

Mariners 101: Do you think that the Mariners should retool and get younger in the offseason?

Eno Sarris: No, I think they’re building and close. I’d add a couple pieces.

Tracer Bullet : I like using K%+PU%-BB% & GB% as a quick assessment of a pitcher’s skill/risk, but I’m unsure how they should be weighted. Any tips?

Eno Sarris: Actually we should probably convert PU into PU/TBF so that they are all on the same scale. K+PU-BB/TBF — those are all good or bad and under control of the pitcher. GB is more context dependent.

mike sixel: Always better to make the playoffs and have a chance, than to be sitting at home in the off season….Always.

carl: Oswaldo Arcia has 2 HR in 2 games, which is nothing important. More interesting is the question of whether he has any real chance of sticking in the Padres OF next year, competing with Dickerson, Margot, Jankowski and Renfroe.

Eno Sarris: Since Margot and Renfroe are righties, maybe as a platoon partner for the third OF.

Wakawaka: When you’re evaluating a pitch, what do you look at other than swinging strike rates and ground ball rates? Pop-up rate? Foul ball rate? Average exit velocity against the pitch? Or is it better just to stick to looking at swinging strike rates and ground ball rates?

Eno Sarris: I’ve been just using swSTR and GB. The rest, you start degrading the sample a ton.

Eno Sarris: Sometimes command improves in the bullpen for fatigue/mechanics/third pitch command reasons. If they have a better option, he should be good in the pen.

Eno Sarris: Yeah I think so. Which is fine.

Josh: What are some easy ways to determine if a pitch’s vertical or horizontal movement are good or not? Are there some rough baseline numbers you use?

Eno Sarris: Here are the averages! http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-change-average-movement-for-each-pitch-type/ More drop (lower vertical number) is pretty much better for every pitch other than the four-seamer, where ride (higher vertical number) is better.

Bob: Mookie’s wRC+ split is 153 home/127 away. He may be disproportionately benefited by the Green Monster. 283 wRC+ as a pull hitter.

Eno Sarris: That’s single year. it’s not as crazy for his career.

Wakawaka: Do you know of any pitchers that have a good rising four-seamer and a good sinking two-seamer? Seems like guys either have one or the other but not both, which makes sense.

Eno Sarris: Yes it’s very hard. I believe I wrote about it in a Chris Tillman interview last year, because he’s one of the few. His sinker isn’t good, but it sinks relative to his four-seamer. And you really should define most movement off the primary fastball. Bauer’s is similar. A few guys trying to do both. Not easy because of mechanics.

HappyFunBall: You trust Bundy tomorrow v NYY ?

Eno Sarris: Yeah I like what he’s up to.

John: Any idea what’s wrong with Wil Myers?

Eno Sarris: Look at his seasonal numbers, that’s who he is.

Eno Sarris: Always starter for me. Was great in last start until last inning.

Eno Sarris: Roberts said they will call him up this September if they need him? Wow. He needs innings. I guess he’ll play with whatever team until their season/playoffs are over, then come up and relieve some, then go to AFL.

Guest: What’s happened to Jake Lamb? Was early season SSS? What is his slash in 2017?

Eno Sarris: Popping the ball up, struggling a little on D… just a blip I think. Seasonal number still look sustainable to me and he’s shown signs of coming out of it.

Bob: I’m beating a dead horse here but Mookie’s career wRC home/road difference is 20 (139/119). Dustin Pedroia also has a 125/109 split for his career. I just wonder if players who have low to medium power to LF really benefit from the Green Monster beyond the park effects adjustment. I doubt Wade Boggs has as good stats as he had if he wasn’t a Red Sox.

Eno Sarris: The Rockies park factor adjustment is probably too harsh, considering the hangover effects they have on the road. I’m not saying park factors are perfect.

Bip Roberts: What baseball player is the most knowledgeable beerman?

Eno Sarris: Corey Knebel is a home brewer, Sean Doolittle knows the bay area scene fairly well.

John: Hey Eno, love your stuff. What are your thoughts on Billy Hamilton? In the past 8 days or so he has come back to Earth and its tough to swipe bags when youre not on base. What would you do with him?

Eno Sarris: Start him against lefties if you’re nervous.

Eno Sarris: Deolis and Cingrani but that’s cheating. Stretching a bit, maybe Jim Johnson or Daniel Hudson?

Santa: Will the Mets just shut down Matz at this point? Should they?

Eno Sarris: I’m no doctor, so I guess the doctors will decide.

Chaz: What on earth has become of Patrick Corbin? Were his strong numbers early in his career always misleading? Is this just an example of how tricky coming back from Tommy John can be? And can he get back to what he once was again?

Eno Sarris: Dunno, it was always a really good slider and missing other components, so I think early success was a little misleading. Never had the velo of a Robbie Ray or the command of Good Justin Masterson. It’s hard to get by with just a slider.

Gabe: Getting married in 10 months. Advice for these next 10 months to be happy and help my fiance?

Eno Sarris: Destination wedding. No arguing about the guest list.

Bork: Is Puig to the Jays a possibility in the off-season? Assuming they don’t re-sign Bautista or Saunders. Also, think Saunders gets a QO?

Eno Sarris: Saunders a good QO candidate for sure, but I bet he’ll want to get three years.

Leif Erikson: I need HR’s to try to get into first. Granderson, Reddick, Santana, Moreland. How would you rank these dudes?

Eno Sarris: I don’t know where those numbers are tracked in order to study it.

Bork: Borkwifes family size trumps mine (approx 150+ people compared to my 30) and they are all country bumpkins with no passports. Destination wedding is our only solution to not upset her entire family.

TGT: Chances of Neil Huntington getting fired after this year’s mess?

Eno Sarris: Zero. They going to play meaningful baseball late into the year in a reload type of year.

HappyFunBall: With a 9 game lead, I think the Nats should run a bullpen start every 5th day. Line up Petit, Ross, Giolito, Lopez, and Cole for 1-2 innings each and figure out who’s best for the postseason bullpen. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Well maybe not for a whole month but definitely a couple times sure.

Reginald Denton III: Max still your favorite pitcher to watch work?

Eno Sarris: Yeah but have a piece on Greinke coming out that made me respect his mind even more. Max has The Stuff of Legends though.

Jackie T.: Does Thor have any shot at the Cy Young? He currently leads the NL in WAR for pitchers (tied with Fernandez). Maybe a dramatic start or two that gets the Mets into the WC game puts him over the hump?

Eno Sarris: He’s the WAR leader but Hendricks has the ERA and Scherzer the Ks/Wins/Volume argument. Will need to do something to jump over those two.

britishcub: it’s my first trip to america as an adult soon any recommendation on a first beer to try in NY?

Eno Sarris: Single Cut (Queens) or Threes (Brooklyn).

Marty: once upon a time a friend and I got off a random exit because we were too early for the Red Sox game and we ended up at Jack’s Abbey

Mike: Has Freeman hit himself into the elite tier of 1B?

Eno Sarris: Looks like a bit of a swing plane change, lots more power now. Still has the line drive connection, it’s been an interesting year.

Tony: Has anyone looked to see if the weather affects any pitch movement? In cricket cloudy skies mean a swinging ball (horizontal movement).

Eno Sarris: I’ve looked at Coors and break, that’s a real thing. I looked at break in cold weather and couldn’t find much. There’s some stuff out there!
