Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 9/15/16

12:19
Eno Sarris: I’m a sucker for a voice like this

12:01
The Cubes: Is Rob Zastryny going to have a starting job next season?

12:01
Eno Sarris: No! Change no good, lefty cutter/curve 90mph guys are named Drew Smyly and….

12:01
Miyazaki: Any chance we see Otani next season?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Too early.

12:02
Vince Vega: Next year Josh Bell is going to hit like…

12:02
Eno Sarris: Here’s a weird one: Ben Zobrist.

12:03
Vince Vega: Yelich take another step forward next year?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Maybe in power but probably will steal only 5-6 bases, so this is who he is in overall value.

12:03
Fire Kevin Cash: Another Alex Cobb start last night with great results even if the changeup isn’t there. What are your thoughts on him right now?

12:04
Eno Sarris: I guess speed is part of the brilliance on the pitch, but he’s missing SIX inches of drop. I wouldn’t trust him for this year.

12:04
Jeet: In a 1 catcher OBP league who would you prefer for your team in the playoffs – Contreras or Sal Perez

12:04
Eno Sarris: Contreras.

12:05
Ralph: 12 team H2H with OBP/SLG can keep 4 with 2 round penalties. Already keeping Springer for a 9th, Lindor for 19th, and Wil Myers for a 21st. I’m between David Dahl for a 14th (He was a FA pickup) or Todd Frazier for a 8th for my 4th keeper. Thoughts?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Dahl and the extra rounds.

12:06
The Dark Knight: What really are the chances of Matt Harvey returning at 100% next season? Have we seen the last of him as an effective pitcher? No precedent of pitchers returning from TOS right?

12:06
Eno Sarris: Josh Beckett had another year or two after it, Jaime Garcia is still pitching, Chris Carpenter did pretty well.

12:07
Mr. Glass: Strasburg and Stanton are on the permanent “do-not-draft-because-of-M*A*S*H” list right?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Every player has a price. If they drop into the fifth and sixth rounds, you probably still get great value with them plus replacement level.

12:07
Keith Hernandez: Heard Buster Olney make a player comp for Gary Sanchez the other day on Sportscenter… Defensively – Pudge Rodriguez. Offensively – Manny Ramirez. On a scale of 1-10, how ridiculous is that statement? (This is why I can’t watch sportscenter anymore)

12:07
Eno Sarris: I think the Pudge part is worse.

12:07
Eno’s Conscience: Thoughts on Soler next season? Still having dynasty value?

12:08
Eno Sarris: What’s funny is that he actually is going to do what I thought he would do this year, in about half a season. It’s still crowded in Chicago, but he has full-season true-talent .265/25 type talent.

12:09
Birdland: How hot is Kevin Gausman going to be next spring? Top 10 AL Only SP and $20+ in Tout/LABR, etc?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Not sure I’m totally into him at those prices. Never thrown 200 innings, curve still isn’t great but it’s better than any breaker he’s had. To me, he’s a number two.

12:10
Wily Dames: To your knowledge, has anyone done research on the effect of how long a pitcher sits between innings and their performance in the next inning?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Haven’t seen this!

12:10
Joe Orsulak: Why does nobody want the Twins head of baseball ops job? Is it a salary issue? Or is it a control issue, with ownership too hands-on? Both?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I’d guess the owners are meddlers.

12:11
JD15: Fantasy/Rules question: I was playing Terrance Gore the other night (Tuesday I think) and Gore stole a base and caused a balk on a play in the 9th inning. The balk was enforced though by “allowing” Gore take 2nd (which he had already stolen) and Dyson take home since he was on 3rd while this was happening. Why does Gore get penalized for this? No chance there is a scoring change, right?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I love what fantasy does to a baseball fan, I really do. No idea if they’ll change it though.

12:11
Merv Throneberry: Strailly! That is all.

12:11
tommylasagna: am i the only one that hates football?

12:12
Eno Sarris: No fantasy teams this year, may watch a few quarters of 49ers, go to a few Stanford games, but it feels like I’m doing it because I have to or because my wife will let me sit for an hour if it’s in front of something like that.

12:12
The Decadent Moose: Mazara is pretty much league-average by every metric going. Is he still the brightest RF prospect?

12:13
Eno Sarris: I see growth coming in patience, power and contact. Next year, I wouldn’t project him for this, but I could see him hitting .285+ with 25+ homers and great R/RBI.

12:13
Mike: Does the seventh inning stretch count as a baseball lude?

12:13
Aziz Ansari: Hello

12:13
Whats that Odor: Is Encarnacion the best parrot trainer in the league? I mean he’s walked it 39 times this season, sometimes in outdoor stadiums and it still hasn’t flown away yet

12:13
Eno Sarris: yes.

12:14
Zonk: After wading into the Kaepernick thing, when he really didn’t have to, that has to be the final straw on LaRussa’s tenure, don’t you think?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Passan ripped him a new one.

12:14
Seth: seems like a lot of articles on FG about speed being the new fantasy scarcity with the ‘juiced ball’…how does this move the needle on 1D players like C Carter and K/Chris Davis, or conversely guys like Peraza and Mallex Smith?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Wouldn’t be surprised if the retroactive numbers prefer the 1 category speedsters over the power guys. I think Chris Carter’s ISO actually went down relative to the league!

12:16
Billy Heywood: I’m getting married in Negril, but don’t want to do the all-inclusive resort to avoid making guests pay the resort fees. Any experience/ideas of places to look into that would be on the beach and can host 100 guests?

12:18
Eno Sarris: That size.. I think Negril Beach Club? I used to hang at smaller places like Alfred’s and Silver Sand but it’s all one beach. If you identify a spot that can house the wedding party, book all those rooms, and then help people find stuff along the beach. It’s seriously like 15 minutes walk to great hotels, some super small, some bigger and more first world, your guests won’t have trouble.

12:19
Zonk: David Ross is on pace to have the 2nd best season of his career by WAR at age 39. He is 7th among all NL catchers in WAR (1.8), despite not playing full-time…just behind Yadier Molina. Who saw that coming?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Grandpa Rossy!

12:19
Miketron: There seems to be a Singlecut shortage where I am. Any other widely available New England style IPAs to try in the meantime?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Not many are widely available. Tree House, Trillium don’t distribute much. Maybe you’ll see more Trillium now that they are canning.

12:20
Eno Sarris: Grimm and Other Half and Threes make some too.

12:20
Ronnie: In a hypothetical Puig/Braun swap how much value would LA have to add to make a deal?

12:22
Eno Sarris: I mean I love this rumor and I’d really think about it if I were the Brewers. Puig would paint that town red. I don’t know about BMac, I think the Dodgers would have to add a young starting pitcher, like a De Leon before he was De Leon now. Brewers would do it to get younger, cheaper, and get the arm.

12:22
Pablo: What is Raisel’s role in 2017?

12:23
Eno Sarris: One last try at starting, I’d guess. Because otherwise why would you pitch him two innings at a time.

12:23
Erik Guy: Hi Eno, before the bball chat, I have a brewery recommendation. Not sure how often you get out to the DC area, but next time you do, check out my buddy’s craft brewery, he makes some unbelievable stuff. Denizen’s Brewing Co, in Silver Springs, legit!!!

12:23
Zwibi: Would love to just get your general overall opinion of Strasburg. Think he would be healthy enough to be a keeper going into next year?

12:24
Eno Sarris: He’s so good I’ll go to the trough if he’s anything cheaper than an ace. But if you’re keeping three/four and he’s your only pitcher keeper… yeah that would make me nervous. With the forearm again.

12:25
tommylasagna: what team that will miss the playoffs this year do you think will have the best turnaround next year?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Yankees and Astros in the AL, Pirates and … Pirates in the NL. In each case, a little bit of pitching, found, grown, or bought will make a difference.

12:26
Roberto Clemente: As someone who has watched Adam Frazier at all levels, I’m personally not surprised to see him hitting this way. With the obvious caveat being it’s not a huge sample size; do you think he can be anything more than just a utility guy? Keep in mind, this is a Cistulli guy we’re talking about!

12:27
Eno Sarris: Little worried this power is over his head, and if that goes, he’s a one-tooler in the outfield, which sounds like a utility guy.

12:27
Eno Sarris: (it’s a really good hit tool though)

12:27
Walt Schmaltz: Does either Morgan or Asher stand out as a possible back-end starter for next year’s Phils?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Definitely not the first. Probably not on the second.

12:28
ShakeYourTushieHasegawa: What’s your best guess on FA contracts for these unexciting players: Nova, Hellickson, Prado, Jay, Fister, A. Blanco

12:28
Eno Sarris: The pitchers might do pretty well. Jaime Garcia might be the best free agent pitcher. The hitters will get one, two-year small deals.

12:29
Bob: As a Pirates fan, how worried should I be that Josh Bell won’t ever be able to play even replacement level defense at first?

12:29
Eno Sarris: The hitting looks good enough that he’ll find his place.

12:29
Elton: Optimistic for Vince Velasquez next year?

12:30
Eno Sarris: For all the bellyaching he might get to 140 innings this year, and by K-BB those were pretty awesome innings. I’ll buy again next year, particularly at SP3/4 prices.

12:30
gelezinas vilkas: Eno: end of fake teams season for me, so I’m already thinking about keepers for next year. In a 16 team pts. league (low deductions for Ks at .3) do you like Jose Ramirez or Keon Broxton as my last OF after Trumbo and Blackmon? Keep 12.

12:30
Eno Sarris: Rather Ramirezes flexibility than Broxton’s risk.

12:31
Zonk: Matt Kemp and Jason Heyward have nearly the same WAR, of course by entirely different ways. Who would you rather have on your team?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Heyward. Younger, more ready to turn it around. If it was just *right now* I guess Kemp might help more, you can always find a defensive replacement OF.

12:31
i hate my manager: if Rob Zastryzny and Marc Rzepczynski were on the same team, would the world explode?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Autocorrect would correct itself into a black hole.

12:31
Erik: Has there been a season to season drop off by a young superstar in recent memory which is as large as the gap between ’15 Bryce Harper and ’16 Bryce Harper? Does this ever happen without injury?

12:32
Eno Sarris: But there was injury! I suspect that most of these dropoffs like this are injury related, reported or no.

12:32
Kristen: AL Manager and Exec of the year? Has to be Banister and JD for putting together the best record in the AL despite not having Darvish, Lucroy and Beltran for the entire first half of the season.

12:32
Eno Sarris: I actually have a vote for AL MoY and I’m going to try and put together some metrics to guide my vote.

12:32
ShakeYourTushieHasegawa: I read somewhere that we shouldn’t ignore this spike in power going into next season. What say you? League wide hard hit% is over 31% for the first time since 2007

12:33
Eno Sarris: Exit velo is up, HR/FB is up, and it’s stayed up. If they don’t change the ball again, this is the new reality.

12:33
Zonk: I wouldn’t take Contreras over Perez……Montero and Ross are getting alot more playing time lately. Montero’s back is much improved, apparently.

12:33
Eno Sarris: PT is a problem. On per-PA work, I would go with Contreras though.

12:33
CJC: Is Ryon Healy good? Will he remain at 3B for the A’s?

12:33
Eno Sarris: Yes and yes. I like him as a .280/20 guy.

12:33
Luke: How do I explain Ivan Nova to my children?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Have curve, will travel.

12:34
Vince Vega: Trey Turner, bonafide or bonnefacio?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Bonafide.

12:34
Eno Sarris: Though good job on that one.

12:34
Jappy: Considering a big trade in a deep keeper league–Would you move a $13 Donaldson for a $22 Harper? I’m pretty on the fence

12:35
Eno Sarris: If Donaldson were a year older or the more expensive one maybe.

12:35
Reginald Denton III: Hey Eno! So my team is ridiculously stacked with pitching…I have Kershaw, Max, Sale, JoFer, and Thor, and I’m going to lose in my fantasy playoffs, because…well, H2H. 🙁

12:35
Eno Sarris: … yeah.

12:36
Erik: Sounds like both the Braves and Phillies will be at least minor buyers this off-season. While neither will be major playoff contenders, could they improve enough to make the NL east the toughest division in baseball?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Phillies were the rabbit this year, so I almost named them as the other NL team. A pitcher could really change it up over there, particularly if Nola and VV are healthy next year.

12:37
Merv Throneberry: There’s something about Devenski…his K/IP is solid, BB/9 is stellar and he can roll for multiple innings. Think there’s any way the ‘Stros consider starting him next year?

12:37
Eno Sarris: I do, and his changeup is really good. One of the biggest velo gaps among starters. If I hear that is happening in the spring, I’m jumping.

12:38
E5: Sick Kid = Eno Chat on a Thursday! Yea buddy! (the chat part, not the sick kid part, that part sucks!)

12:38
AD: Any experience with Philadelphia-area IPAs?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Nugget Nectar? That’s about it.

12:38
Steve: Is everyone going to do a review of their season predictions? This is always fun.

12:38
Eno Sarris: I nailed three or four and was super wrong on the rest.

12:39
Q-Ball: Between 1926 and 1928, Babe Ruth accumulated 35.6 WAR, leading the AL every year. During that stretch, he also accumulated not one MVP vote. Not a question, just….what?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Seems, uh, Troutesque.

12:39
Kristen: What is it about barrel-aged stouts that make them seem thinner than non-BA ones?

12:39
Eno Sarris: The alcohol? Usually stronger.

12:39
hhh: What do you think the A’s do about their hole in CF? I can’t imagine they roll with Smolinski/Eibner/Brugman very long. You see them making a play for, like, Inciarte?

12:40
Eno Sarris: That’s a rumor, but I wouldn’t try to imagine what the A’s will do. A platoon in CF sounds very much like them.

12:40
AD: Fun fact: Only 3 players since 2000 have hit as many HR as Galvis with a lower RC+

12:41
Eno Sarris: Hah. There’s a few like that this year. Odor’s only 11% better than the league with 31 homers! Adam Jones has 27 homers and a 102 wRC+.

12:41
Bo: Do you have any good advice for succeeding in head-to-head playoffs? I finished 1st in the regular season but I’m now looking likely to bomb out in the first round of the playoffs through a combination of injuries to key players and bad luck, and my only solace is that this league pays the regular season champ a decent amount. Is there any way to fight back against the randomness of playoffs?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Quantity on the pitching side, so perhaps a drop of a hitter for a pitcher in the playoffs. A quick hook with anyone on the fringes that isn’t a keeper. That’s about all I have for you.

12:42
Matt: True or False: Billy Butler is, in fact, more valuable than a ham sandwich.

12:42
Eno Sarris: Well, can I put some bacon and sriracha honey mustard on there? Maybe on a brioche bun with some melted brie ?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Because if I can…

12:43
Guest: If the Jays continue to collapse and miss the playoffs, will Gibson be gone and will the organization start a rebuild?

12:43
Eno Sarris: People seem to like Gibbie but I don’t really get it.

12:43
Zwibi: What is the floor for Peraza next year? Do you think he will get enough PT to anchor the SB category on a 5×5 ottoneu team. Thinking about dropping Dee and using Peraza as my keeper instead.

12:43
Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t do that.

12:43
Watty: Is there any rule that prohibits tattoos on pitcher’s arms? I always wonder why a pitcher wouldn’t get tattoos of baseballs up and down his pitching forearm to add deception.

12:43
Eno Sarris: I know they’ve made people wear long sleeves before…

12:44
Eno Sarris:

12:44
A. Reitz: Your wife “will let you sit for an hour”. Please explain because…you travel for a living, to follow baseball games. Don’t act like you’re roughin’ it.

12:45
Eno Sarris: Oh just have two toddler boys and getting an hour on the weekend to not follow them around and keep them from killing each other is something I’d take if it was given to me.

12:45
Jeff: Some days I go on Youtube and watch Pedro Martinez pitching highlights. Has there ever been a filthier pitcher than 1997-200 Pedro? That changeup was breathtaking!

12:45
Eno Sarris: I once took a look at if every pitch he threw was a top-five pitch in the league. It was actually much closer than I thought.

12:46
Pablo: Is there difference in beer from a can vs. beer from a bottle?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Can more likely to be fresh and unaffected by light, should be fresher.

12:46
Roadhog: What would an A’s/Reddick reunion look like this offseason? 3/42?

12:46
Eno Sarris: I get this feeling that they can’t offer more than 3/36. I’ve never heard a larger number. That’s what they supposedly offered him before.

12:46
E5: My mother once told me that I needed to have more hobbies than baseball or I was going to find myself uninteresting. I showed her! Here I am! Being interesting!

12:47
John Olerud: Please ignore my previous question regarding Dahl. I finally found a recent update on David Dahl’s status from the Denver Post (which might be of interest to other chatters who were wondering the same thing as me): http://www.denverpost.com/2016/09/14/david-dahl-colorado-rockies/.

12:47
Eno Sarris: Fatigued I guess. Weird.

12:48
Eno Sarris: An underrated thing about moving up in the minors is that the seasons get longer. I saw Bryce Harper play alongside Mike Trout in the AFL the year before they debuted in MLB and they both were dragging ass, Trout more than Harper though. He went in hard at second in the All-Star game with that eye black dripping, made everyone mad.

12:49
Table: Why is an expensive old slugger with bad defense worth more than just Puig in the first place?

12:49
Eno Sarris: Everything comes down to how you value Puig. They don’t seem to value him that highly, having put him on waivers and the like.

12:49
Eno Sarris: I, myself, like Puig and would trade for him.

12:49
Q-Ball: Reds pitchers are only 7 HRs short of surrendering 241, the all-time team record. At -0.6 WAR, they are withing striking distance of being the first team ever to pitch at below replacement level all year. I hate to pile on but…wow.

12:51
Eno Sarris: One of my BOLD, BOLD okay BOLD, predictions was that they’d produce three top 50 pitchers. lol. I like Straily as a back end guy, Desclafani as a two, and if Iglesias isn’t so brittle, he could be a 1/2. It looks bad, but part of it was injury. The other part was Finnegan (better recenlty) and Lamb (woof) not working out.

12:51
ShakeYourTushieHasegawa: Cotton’s K rate will improve over time, yes?

12:52
Eno Sarris: For sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not elite, though. I found that changeups relate to K% less than other pitchers, so he might get some weak contact from that filthy, filthy thing.

12:52
SDinSEA: Does Schimpf settle in as a 2-3 WAR player?

12:52
Eno Sarris: 1.5-2.5. He’ll be a guy for a while, but not sure you want him starting when you’re going good.

12:52
SDinSEA: Travis Jankowski, an every day 1st-2nd division regular?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I like him a little better because of the defense.

12:53
jon: $100m for Chapman this winter?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Oh man. $100m for a reliever. I know that money is worth less over time, but that would create a real uneasy feeling in my tummy.

12:53
Dock Ellis: Got a new job? Drink a beer to celebrate! Lost your job? Drink a beer to drown your sorrows! Got married? Cheers have a beer! Getting a divorce? Let’s go drink a beer! Is there any more useful tool in this world?

12:54
Eno Sarris: This is almost literally what Bill Spaceman Lee said to me about beer.

12:54
bob loblaw: Which guy do you want on your bench to try and grab a steal here and there? Rajai, Dyson, Broxton, Gardner, Quinn

12:54
Eno Sarris: Rajai best combo of predictable playing time and plus speed?

12:54
Eldridge Cleaver: Going to Vermont and Maine next week…other than Heady Topper, do you recommend any Brews I should look for?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Focal Banger, Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine (and doubles), Fiddlehead, and if you can get up to Hill Farmstead or find some on tap, anything. oh in Maine, Bissell Brothers and Maine Brewing.

12:56
SDinSEA: Feel for Alex Dickerson’s long term value?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Might have to platoon and I’m worried about the defense but I see some growth potential in the bat (power wise, maybe patience) that could get him to 115 wRC+ or so? He’s a find.

12:56
gucci : Eduardo at home against the yanks tonite?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Risky to me. Do it if you’re comfortable with risk.

12:56
Flaka: Opinion on Ariel Miranda? Useful streamer?

12:57
Eno Sarris: I’ve been using him at home and on the road against weaker teams. Interesting that Seattle is playing more average this year though.

12:57
Bork: That’s like Brett Cecil’s agent this off-season. LEFTY CAN PITCH.

12:57
SDinSEA: As we now have such a high number of high 90s to 100s pitchers relative to the past, do you think we’ll see the top end of velocity limits increase or are we currently maxing out the limits of our anatomy?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Casey Weathers threw 108 at Driveline. He was sorta running when he threw, but 108.

12:58
Guest: A’s secretly competitive next year? Hope Gray was a fluke/injury and watch some of the young guys develop? Can see a run at 85 wins without squinting

12:59
Eno Sarris: They’re getting closer. Healy/Semien/Lowrie are a Wendle/Pinder breakout from being a decent infield. Davis/Vogt capable. Graveman a fine 3/4, Cotton and Manaea have frontline and huge breakout potential. Add a healthy Gray and another bullpen addition (they seem to buy one every year), and that at least looks like .500 to me.

1:00
asdfrrs: Which of the Dodger players will the Giants sign: Turner, Hill, Jansen?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Oh man they’ll want Jansen so bad.

1:00
The Cincinnati Kid: Is Salazar cuttable?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Yes. Sadly.

1:00
Jeet: Re: H2h what do you think Eno? Roto is the fairest way to gauge a team but half the owners lose interest midseason right?

1:01
Eno Sarris: That’s about right. I’ve been in some roto leagues with second half awards to combat that.

1:01
Mike: Do you think that the braves new park next year will play more hitter or pitcher friendly than turner field?

1:01
Eno Sarris: The biggest determinants of park factor are temperature and altitude, I believe, so about the same. Unless the walls are nutso.

1:02
Maverik312: Found it!

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/first-inning-home-field-advantage/

This has a link to something Matt Swartz wrote when at BP

1:02
Eno Sarris: Yeah, the home pitcher knows exactly when he’ll pitch and the away pitcher has to sit. I’ve seen some pitchers talk about changing up their pregame to account for this.

1:03
Hannah Hochevar: Hi Eno. I’m worried about Baltimore’s lack of a Sagittarius. How does not having a warrior-sage affect their chances in October?

1:03
E5: Don’t believe everything you think… even if we do.

1:03
The Hamburglar: Atlanta having Cigar City Jai Alai makes me not so homesick

1:03
PM_Me_Your_Ludes: What beer is Mike Trout? What beer is Matt Kemp?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Deschutes Abbys for Trout, Bourbon County Stout for Kemp. One great and somehow underrated, the other has great power and is very overrated.

1:05
Sonny: Can you predict some comps for Maikel Franco? Interesting profile even in a down year

1:06
Eno Sarris: Other guys with K% and ISOs like I think Franco can have next year: Jose Abreu, Marcell Ozuna, Adam Jones…

1:06
Trunk: Frazier has 36/97!!

1:07
Eno Sarris: OBP/SLG pretty boring though.

1:07
Eno Sarris: all those popups suck.

1:07
Matt: Think the Yanks should target Hellickson next year? Think they will?

1:07
Eno Sarris: I don’t think they should. I wouldn’t put him in that park.

1:08
E5: Pitchers to make their debut this season have been terrible! Any of them you particularly feel will figure it out with some time?

1:08
Eno Sarris: It’s been a bad year to debut, what with the juiced ball.

1:08
Eno Sarris: I think they’ll figure it out.

1:08
AD: Had a good chuckle last night when Sutcliffe discussed Porcello’s “spin ratio”

1:09
Eno Sarris: RPM is a ratio, I guess, but hah.

1:09
Phil: I know we shouldn’t get into the granular on WAR (2.9 vs. 3.0)… but nonetheless, Gausman will be posting the first 3-win season from an O’s SP in over a DECADE. That’s a really long list of futility.

1:09
Eno Sarris: I’m not saying people shouldn’t be happy. I wonder if Bundy can’t be better if he stays healthy though.

1:09
Eno Sarris: (obviously that’s like the biggest caveat of all times)

1:09
Deece: Votto’s 2015-16 2nd half numbers are nuts. would like to see that over a full season and ppl still complain about how he doesnt produce.

1:09
Eno Sarris: .400 hitter if he did it all year?

1:10
rob deer: headed to san diego next month to hang with some friends. best breweries in the downtown area to visit?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Modern Times has a tasting room near Hamilton’s and Toronado’s in North Park, that’s a way to demolish the SD scene in one fell swoop. I like Monkey Paw and Half Door downtown. Half Door has an NEIPA.

1:10
Miketron: I feel you Eno, we have a toddler who like to “help” by putting a blanket over the baby’s face. Got to watch em like a hawk…

1:11
ShakeYourTushieHasegawa: What’s your wife really into? My wife is into calligraphy and when we talk to each other about our favorite interests (baseball and calligraphy) I can tell there’s a huge gap in appreciation for the difficulties and subtleties of the respective hobbies…can you relate?

1:11
Eno Sarris: Hah. She likes gardening… and yeah. But I try!

1:11
Steve: Can a pitcher’s reputation have an impact on his performance? in any measurable way? I thinking maybe hitters changing their approaches in a way more favorable to him.

1:12
Eno Sarris: Umpires do give people calls. And if you’re known for command and throw a dickshot like Kershaw does sometimes, I think people just don’t expect it and miss it sometimes because of it.

1:12
E5: Bambi’s over… bye bye Eno Chat

1:12
Dan: Thoughts on Roman Quinn’s potential as a keeper? Seems like B-Ham with more pop

1:13
Eno Sarris: People who know better than me have liked him for a while. He should make the opening day roster next year.

1:13
SDinSEA: Last chat somebody mentioned wheat allergies in relation to their beer, who had just moved to Seattle. Check out Ghostfish Brewing. They make full-bodied brews that are ALL gluten-free :). Cheers.

1:13
my name: SF organizational philosophy regarding contact guys hasn’t worked out this year like last. Just a case of guys under-performing at the same time or does the plan lack effectiveness due to the need of cluster luck? Seems like it would be more effective, but then I think “man, a homer would nice”.

1:14
Eno Sarris: Park is part of this discussion, but as much as contact creates more lottery tickets, it also seems to create fallow periods. But Belt, Crawford and Posey were all above projections in the first half and are now below it. It’s kinda on them to bust through. Writing about that for ESPN this weekend.

1:14
Bork: Borkwife is a lefty so there’s a chance Bork jr will be: A. A boy and B. A lefty. If Bork jr is both A and B should I call baseball scouts or will they come to me?

1:14
Eno Sarris: Money will rain down upon you.

1:14
Matt E G: how come nobody is talking about the al east

1:15
Eno Sarris: Nobody! it’s like they don’t exist! Oh you mean here? We’ll see.

1:15
Choo Choo: Who is you World Series pick?

1:15
Eno Sarris: Hard to pick against the THEO BOWL right now.

1:15
Miketron: I find today’s chat lacking in ludification

1:16
Matt: “Beer – the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems” – Homer Simpson

1:16
JayBruceSleeveFluff: In the time it took you to complete said ham sandwich it would already be eaten…by billy butler

1:16
Ben: Also about the A’s: Once in High School, newly promoted A’s 2nd baseman Joe Wendle broke my nose after farting on him during wrestling practice. Given the A’s general situation, what are the chances he’ll stick long enough to tell that story at a game next year?

1:16
Eno Sarris: God I hope/don’t hope that story is true. I mean… did you do it on purpose?

1:16
some guy: What does Naquin look like if he’s posting a .320 BABIP instead of this nasty .400+ business??

1:17
Eno Sarris: A slightly more powerful version of the .260/.320 guy I thought he was.

1:17
Matt: Last week, I was informed that boobytrap spelled backwards is partyboob. You’re welcome.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Let’s spread the word here.

1:17
Dave Kingman: Next season as a keeper – DeGrom @ $13 or Corey Seager @ $22?

1:17
Eno Sarris: Seager Seager Seager

1:17
Matt: Saw a beer named Jai AlaIPA – prettay, prettay prettay clever

1:18
Eno Sarris: Good god that’s like putting up Ryan Braun (the reliever) in an auction.

1:18
SDinSEA: Casey Weathers, as in the former top 10 pick closer of the Rockies? Goodness! Also, not a name I’ve heard in forever :).

1:18
Eno Sarris: That’s him!

1:19
Gavin: Thank you for not liking Gibby along with most sentient Jays fans. Gibby is great but he’s like if your dad ran a baseball team. He pinch hit Navarro for Barney in the 7th or 8th in the last series and I nearly spit out my beer. In-game management in an important spot!!! Never normally happens on the Jays.

1:19
Roadhog: Wendle seems to be breaking out already, seems comfortable hitting leadoff (???), stealing (???), and he hits the ball extremely hard, per statcast. Also, his defense is exactly as advertised, which is to say excellent. o

1:20
Eno Sarris: Making a ton of contact, which is weird. If he can K less than 20% of the time and put up league average power, he might actually be a .260/.320/.400 guy… but the patience is all gone. weird.

1:20
CJM: Cotton has frontline potential? First time I’ve ever seen anyone say his ceiling is higher than a 3

1:20
Eno Sarris: I love love that change.

1:20
Jack C.: No one has a better voice or delivery than Aziz Ansari. The guy is absolutely hilarious. He is a notch below Daniel Tosh for me. Who is your favorite comedian? And why?

1:21
Eno Sarris: CK because nobody captures fat old slob like he does. It’s amazing.

1:21
Gest: Re: Ruth mvp, I’m pretty sure you were only allowed to win one mvp back then.

1:21
Eno Sarris: Oh phew.

1:21
E5: My toddler girl puts her “babies” on time out all the time. Meanest mother EVER

1:22
Eno Sarris: I love how that stuff always makes you introspective like WAIT WHAT ARE YOU SAYING ABOUT MY PARENTING LITTLE GIRL

1:22
rob deer: what do you make of heyward over the next 2-3 years? think there’s an injury lurking in his 2016 results or is this just his many mechanical moving parts?

1:22
Eno Sarris: it really seems like a swing change could do wonders for him, right?

1:22
Rick C: RE: SunTrust park… I don’t know the dimensions and everything off the top of my head, but the wall height has three stages, increasing from LF to RF. I want to say the max height is 18ft. To counter that, the RF distance is much shorter than Turner Field’s.

1:22
i hate my manager: eno i have a great idea for an article! – “what can hitters actually see coming out of a pitchers hand”..or something like that.

1:22
Eno Sarris: hmmm

1:22
KRIS BRYANT: Kris. Bryant.

1:23
zurzles: should i pick up chase anderson in a tight stream-heavy playoff matchup expecting the cubs to clinch the division today and rest their starters tomorrow?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Oh I love that. Don’t play him if they don’t win today though haha.

1:23
klof: Do you prefer your bars to be dark caves that keep the cold and light out and encourage you to huddle with your ale or do you prefer sunny spots where the light makes the golden-orange haze of your IPA glimmer and spark your imagination about it’s cornucopia of juicy hop flavors?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Used to be the first, prefer the second now.

1:23
Eno Sarris: I used to be

1:23
ShakeYourTushieHasegawa: I’ve never watched Bryan Shaw pitch. He doesn’t throw a fastball?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Some cut fastball thing, it’s a fastball, not a slider.

1:24
Randy Savage: I knew something was off. I could feel it in my loins. Eno was chatting, yet I had somehow not realized it.

1:24
Eno Sarris: I hope you don’t associate me with your loins daily.

1:24
Brendan: Justin Miller rule, arm tattoos have to be covered by long sleeves.

1:24
Eno Sarris: There you go.

1:24
LudeBurger: oh my, you degenerates actually have children…

1:24
Eno Sarris: Frightening, right?

1:24
Coner: Thanks for coming by Toronto last week! Checking your phone while on stage? Faux pas!

1:24
Eno Sarris: My dad called me! So strange.

1:24
Eno Sarris: Wanted to make sure people couldn’t hear it haha.

1:25
zurzles: their E# is 1 so a cards loss also clinches

1:25
Eno Sarris: Good news. It’s a good idea.

1:25
brant brown dropped the ball: what’s your take on jake odorizzi? feeling like a schmuck for sitting him against the jays (even though i think the process was good!) in my playoff matchup. he’s got the o’s looming on sunday, which is both a bad matchup for his homer-happiness and the same team that smoked him last week. if i need him sunday, can i trust him?

1:26
Eno Sarris: And he’s going to Baltimore gdammit. He’s tough. Ks have gone down and the homers are all still there. I’d say don’t start him unless you really have to.

1:26
jon: The no beard rule will mean Arrieta isn’t going to the Bronx.

1:26
Eno Sarris: Cashner told reporters he probably wouldn’t sign in Miami because of it.

1:27
sarc: when do the dodger lock seager up to a long term deal? and how much will it be worth??

1:27
Eno Sarris: They’ll try! Bet they try to get him on a $100m deal that buys out a couple years of FA.

1:27
Matt: Thoughts on Travis Shaw for next year?

1:27
Eno Sarris: Between Moncada and Pablo, not sure if he’s an everyday player.

1:28
Dizzy: Well, between 1926 and 1928, previous winners were ineligible for AL MVP, so Babe *couldn’t* get votes. Trout doesn’t have *that* problem, at least.

1:28
Eno Sarris: There is confirmation.

1:28
Eno Sarris: And also: stupid rule.

1:29
Eno Sarris: Okay I gotta go pimp my piece (it’s up! maybe one of my best ones) and clean the house for the in-laws and figure out how one packs for a wake slash camping trip.

1:29
Eno Sarris: Thanks for hanging out!

I don’t understand the comment about poor debut pitching this season. Debut pitching has been outstanding this year. The only “disappointments” seem to be Glasnow, Giolito, and Berrios… and they’ll still be drafted quite early in dynasty drafts.

Jeez. Thor had 2.1 WAR (bbref) last year. There are SIX debut guys with better than that this season, and Fulmer has 5.0. Reyes has 1.4… in 28 ip. Other notables with less than 2.1 WAR… Urias, Manaea, Diaz, DeLeon, Snell, Cotton. And they’ve pitched well (to date)

Its a great year for debut pitching!

=======================================================

EDIT:
The six with better than Thor’s 2.1 are:
Fulmer: 5.0
Tyler Anderson: 3.4
Maeda: 2.8
Devenski: 2.6
Oh: 2.5
Taillon: 2.2

I used BBREF WAR as Fangraphs doesn’t have a “debut” split. (just “rookie”)
… cough, cough.
