FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 12/16/14
9:24 |
: Hi everyone, Paul is going to be a bit late and I will start this chat
|
9:27 |
Do you think Scherzer is going to be disappointed and not get the offer he wanted? It seems like not too many teams are that interested in paying his large price. |
9:28 |
: Just a few teams would be able to afford him to begin with. I think Lester’s deal set the low bar. I expect Scherzer to get a bit more.
|
9:28 |
Which version of the 2014 Salazar are we more likely to see in 2015? |
9:30 |
: I really don’t know, hopefully the second half version when he threw strikes. I watched one of his starts for this week’s Quick Looks and his defense really let him down a few times.
|
9:30 |
whats the next big move the Os make? |
9:31 |
: trade Ubaldo for another sunk contract. Maybe to the Dodgers or Red Sox.
|
9:31 |
That Liriano contract is looking better and better with each pitcher who signs this offseason? Would you say it has been the best value signing this winter? |
9:31 |
: I liked the Headley signing, Downs was dirt cheap for the Royals
|
9:32 |
Reports claim that the Mariners are 1-3 days away from announcing another trade. Any guesses? |
9:32 |
: I am thinking a of Walker, who they have soured on, for another bat.
|
9:33 |
Yelich had a good season. His Hr distance suggests he has developing power but his GB rate says he’ll just kill more worms. Any chance of a GB% turnaround? |
9:33 |
: One sec to check something on him….
|
9:36 | : …yep, he is biased against certain pitcher types. He crushes flyball pitchers and gets killed by groundballers. |
9:36 |
If a half of a season’s worth of Jon Lester brings in Addison Russell, what would the Brewers get for a full year of Carlos Gomez? They should be rebuilding, right? |
9:36 |
: Hi I’m here!
|
9:37 |
: They were in 1st place late in the season, the team really can’t rebuild yet, could later in the season.
|
9:37 |
: Hi Paul and you can take over the questions.
|
9:37 |
: Yeah they’re kind of laying low. I think they’ll do some buy low stuff in January.
|
9:38 |
: I agree with Jeff that I don’t think they’ll punt on 2015.
|
9:38 |
Does it make sense for the Rays to trade Myers? |
9:38 |
: Sort of, but I would be leery after 2 teams looking to move him in 3 seasons.
|
9:38 |
: Sort of? I think now is a good time to buy low on Myers, if they get him for a buy-low price, but it’s not like the Padres are a Wil Myers away from contention.
|
9:39 |
: That’s a good pint. Also, he was terrible in ’14.
|
9:39 |
: point
|
9:39 |
why wont the Os trade bundy? he has shown to have an injury problem, and we have already seen this with machado…i think the Os can get the most value now, and Gauzman proved himself to be the starter we want. isnt bundy expendable? |
9:40 |
: I think it’s a matter of how many prospects the team has, which is not many. They kind of need to hold onto their highly touted guys.
|
9:40 |
: No, a team can never have too much pitching and Bundy may be Orioles best starter within a season or two.
|
9:40 |
Any thoughts on MLB Network’s show about the World Series umpires – “The Third Team”? |
9:40 |
: Haven’t seen it.
|
9:41 |
From a viewer standpoint, I can’t say that I’m super interested to watch. |
9:41 |
Once again Gavin Floyd only to bump a younger, more talented candidate from the starting rotation of the team who signed him. Does Salazar having an option year make it likely that he spends some time in the minors? |
9:42 |
: We are not to the start of the season yet. Someone could likely be hurt or struggling by then. Most teams need 8-10 starters during a season.
|
9:42 |
: Yes, I think so. Also, while it bugs me that I’ll have to move Salazar and/or House further down my fantasy depth charts this coming year, I don’t see this as a bad signing for Cleveland. We all know now that it takes 8 or 9 starting pitchers. Instead of going the Jeff Francis/Aaron Harang/Freddy Garcia, the Indians got a better version. That’s cool too. It’ll work out.
|
9:42 |
Do teams ever try to entice FA’s to sign sooner by offering an extra bonus if they sign within like 5 days or something? Would that lure players out of waiting for other offers? |
9:43 |
: I think they probably do. Whether or not that works……….
|
9:44 |
: I think players have a dollar amount they will take and once it gets reached, they will sign.
|
9:44 |
speaking of the Os trading ubaldo for a sunk contract…. josh hamilton? what else would it take to get that done? |
9:45 |
: I don’t think the Angels could deal with the PR fallout of trading Hamilton straight up for Ubaldo. They’d need either prospects or the Orioles to eat all of Hamilton’s salary, which, why would Baltimore do that?
|
9:45 |
: it seems somewhat fair. I think Hamilton could end of OK, but owed more money.
|
9:45 |
: Good point on the PR
|
9:46 |
where do you think the market inefficiencies are right now? if you were planning to build a team within a three year horizon, what types of players would you spend on? |
9:46 |
: I think the lessons of the last few years is that you need to stock up on position players who can hit, and if you can, find hitters that can regularly hit the ball to all fields, and enjoy doing so.
|
9:46 |
: Defense is still reasonably cheap, middle relievers
|
9:47 |
How concerned should I be about Nick Markakis’ drop in fly ball distance, combined with a move to a less LH-friendly park? |
9:47 |
: Not concerned at all. Unless you’re a Braves fan.
|
9:48 |
: Agree with Paul, but I have run some numbers and found his defensive numbers aren’t as bad as some indicators make them out to be.
|
9:48 |
: Yeah, I guess we’ll see how severe his neck injury is.
|
9:48 |
: and that.
|
9:48 |
Thoughts on the Dodgers dropping Wilson? |
9:49 |
: It must have felt very liberating for Friedman and Zaidi to blow a cool $9.5 million like that.
|
9:49 |
: They are one of the few teams who could afford to with PR backlash. Probably a good move in the long run.
|
9:49 |
Should we view the Joyce as a sign of things to come, or more of the Rays being forced to do Rays things, like the article on the A’s? |
9:50 |
: I have a not-so-secret theory that the Rays are punting this season in advance, but even if they are, they didn’t really need Joyce. Well, they didn’t before the Myers stuff. So now I’m a little lost. I guess if they keep Zobrist in RF, they can run out Jennings-Kiermaier-Zobrist…
|
9:51 |
: the Rays are in a weird place where they need to rebuild from the bottom, but don’t really want to.
|
9:51 |
What can the Giants do at this point to get their roster ready to compete with the Dodgers in NL West in 2015? (I recognize ((as Grant Brisbee pointed out in a recent article over at SBN)) that most “rumors” we hear are the ones people want public, rather than the real juicy stuff, but seems to me that the Giants are running out of options) |
9:51 |
: Will MIddlebrooks is available!
|
9:51 |
: I see Shields in SF
|
9:51 |
More like Won’t Middlebrooks. |
9:52 |
: BOOM.
|
9:52 |
The “seismic rumblings” of the Nats got me thinking of this trade. Red Sox send Mookie Betts, Henry Owens, Joe Kelly, and Devan Marrero to the Nats for Zimmermann and lucas giolito. Thoughts? |
9:52 |
: I think that’s a terrible trade. Is Giolito really that much better than Owens? I doubt it. Not good enough to justify that deal.
|
9:53 |
: Won’t happen and I still don’t get the idea of why the Nats feel they need to move Giolito
|
9:53 |
Another Giants one… do you think the would have any interest in singing Barry Zito? // Would Zito have any interest in coming back on the right deal? He is presently down at the Texas Baseball Ranch (where Kazmir and Bauer ((and myself)) have trained) and I have it on good authority that his velo is climbing back towards 2000-2002 levels. |
9:53 |
Probably? |
9:54 |
: He has a January showcase, we can find out how he is throwing then.
|
9:54 |
And I’m in the best shape of my life! |
9:54 |
What do the Dodgers do at second and third next year? |
9:54 |
: Are Howie Kendrick and Juan Uribe not good enough options for you?
|
9:54 |
: Whatever they want
|
9:55 |
Cleveland is making some peculiar moves. I can understand the Floyd signing, but they also just signed Jerry Sands and Destin Hood. We have no room for OF’s even at AAA. I feel like Salazar-Bauer-House are now expendable and someone seems on the way out in the Columbus OF. Could a trade be brewing? |
9:56 |
: Again, I think it’s more just about building depth. Especially on minor league deals.
|
9:56 |
: There is nothing against stockpiling talent and having depth. If they have too much to waste, make a early season trade to a team with a major injury (which will happen)
|
9:57 |
: OK, so now I’m seeing that Myers might go to Seattle and Taijuan Walker to San Diego. Which, OK.
|
9:57 |
: Also, I still feel like Jerry Sands could have that Steven Pearce season in him someday.
|
9:57 |
What can we make of the race to the middle this offseason? |
9:58 |
: For me, it’s slightly invigorating and slightly annoying. It bothers me that a loaded team like the Nationals is trying to trade guys like Zimmermann and Desmond that they should be signing long-term.
|
9:58 |
: I like it will more teams are competing instead of 10 being in rebuild mode.
|
9:58 |
The difference between Giolito and Owens is that Giolito throws strikes. |
9:58 |
: Noted
|
9:58 |
: Ouch. Still though, they’ve both been top 60 prospects.
|
9:58 |
re: teams trying to entice players to sign sooner, I recall reading last offseason the Angels put out identical offers to multiple FA relievers, with the condition they’d sign whoever accepted first, joe smith was the one that signed with them iirc, turned out to be a good value |
9:59 |
: Yeah, I remember that too. But again, I think that was an unique situation, and probably doesn’t work out too frequently.
|
9:59 |
: yep
|
9:59 |
It’s year-end list time! Do you have any favorite movies, books, or songs/albums from 2014? |
10:00 |
: 2015 Hardball Times Annual
|
10:00 |
: I make two sets of year-end music mixes for friends and family, which I’m currently working on. I’ll blog about it when it’s done. As for movies, I sadly don’t see enough to have an opinion anymore. As for books, yes, THT ’15 and When the Sparrow Sings!
|
10:01 |
: Not much else from me.
|
10:01 |
If 26-year old Alex Rodriguez was a free agent today would he BE A ROBOT |
10:01 |
: He would almost certainly be a robot.
|
10:01 |
: not a centaur?
|
10:01 |
: damn. i couldn’t think of the word. Jeff wins!
|
10:01 |
Pick only one: Dane Cook’s debut “album”; Linkin Park’s debut album; dysentery |
10:01 |
: I’ll go Linkin Park.
|
10:02 |
: the commas
|
10:02 |
There’s a Swyd-blog????? |
10:02 |
NEIIIGGGHHHHHH |
10:03 |
http://swydanpa.blogspot.com/
: At the risk of embarrassment, yes: I haven’t written on it in a year, but I used to write a lot on it when I didn’t get paid for writing for a living. |
10:03 |
paul, do you think the red sox need another starting pitcher? their depth worries me |
10:04 |
: I don’t think they NEED one, no. I think if Porcello-Buchholz-Miley-Kelly-Masterson was the opening day rotation, that’d be fine. But I certainly wouldn’t oppose signing Max Scherzer.
|
10:04 |
: I think they could use one more reliable starter, but the market is shrinking fast. I think they may get one via trade vice free agency. Hamels possibly.
|
10:05 |
: Paul – Who fill in for Buchholz after he goes on the DL after his first start?
|
10:05 |
: Owens or Barnes or Eduardo Rodriguez or one of the other minor leaguers
|
10:05 |
Is it Por-sello or Por-chello? |
10:06 |
: First one right?
|
10:06 |
: I say Por-sello, but I couldn’t tell you if that is right or wrong.
|
10:06 |
Actually, pronounced “Smith” |
10:06 |
: Nailed it.
|
10:06 |
Will Glenn Perkins last the year as the Twins closer? |
10:07 |
: Yes, because even if he’s bad, the Twins are stubborn and will probably still be bad, so they’ll have no reason to make a switch.
|
10:07 |
: Yes, the Twins don’t trade.
|
10:07 |
: Maybe I’m being unfair on Paul Molitor, but he’s guilty until proven innocent in my book.
|
10:08 |
![]() Poor cello 🙁 |
10:08 |
Man, I wish I was Brett Anderson! Getting paid $250,000 an inning sounds like a great gig! |
10:08 |
: Yeah. I’m surprised he got the same money the Rockies would have owed him. I thought they made the right move in declining his option.
|
10:09 |
: It is to compensate him for the riding the minor league buses during all his rehab assignments.
|
10:09 |
As a representative for the National Institute for Equality of Graceful Horse-Human Hybrids (NIEGHHH), I demand that you remove the offensive comment above, submitted by someone who appears to have an, ahem, backwards view of we centaurs. |
10:09 |
: There was a lot of effort put into that comment.
|
10:10 |
: Yes, yes there was
|
10:10 |
Wily Mo Pena wants to come back to the US: think he lands with the Reds to fill that gaping LF hole? |
10:10 |
: I HOPE SO!!!!!!!!!!
|
10:10 |
: Seriously though, he should do himself a favor and only sign with an AL team.
|
10:11 |
: I hope not, but could happen
|
10:11 |
WILLY MO TO THE MARINERS!!!! |
10:11 |
you do get paid 250,000 per inning. You just don’t throw any innings |
10:11 |
: Touche.
|
10:12 |
I asked this earlier, but why don’t MLB teams front load contracts (say, 100 million over 5 years, with 90 million in the first 3 years)? Is it illegal? That way they’re protected from regression (just cut the player and eat the 5/10 million). |
10:13 |
: It’s more a time value of money thing.
|
10:13 |
: Most are trying to win now and don’t have much flexibility because some GM in the past backloaded a ton of contacts and now the team is paying for them. Backloading only works one to get more talent, but not in the long run.
|
10:15 |
: Stlll though, look at Jayson Werths deal. It seemed ridiculous at the time, but now it doesnt seem that bad. This is the way it usually works.
|
10:15 |
Which team in the bottom third of the depth charts can you see making the playoffs? Bottom third: Twins, White Sox, Marlins, Mets, Reds, Astros, Braves, DBacks, Padres, Phillies |
10:15 |
I have Byron Buxton on my stashed keeper list for my fantasy team. Who should I try and flip him for this year? |
10:15 |
: Oops. Sorry.
|
10:15 |
: Taking Pale Hole’s question first – White Sox and then Padres and then nobody.
|
10:15 |
: Try your hardest, you should wait until the prospect rankings come out where he will still be top 5
|
10:16 |
: Reds and Marlins
|
10:16 |
: And, Bob, I guess I would try to flip him for an established major leaguer? Not sure if that’s the tenor of your question.
|
10:16 |
Paul., Jeff’s answer to my question kind of got sqished with your arrival. My question remains on Yelich’s GB %. Can a player become more FB? |
10:17 |
: My apologies. I think yes, players can learn to hit the ball in the air more or less. Look at Willie Mays Hayes. Just kidding. But yes, I think it is possible.
|
10:17 |
: I would see no unless he sells out another part of his game.
|
10:17 |
Will Mike Scioscia be smart like Joe Maddon and hardly ever let me face a lefty or will he over extend me? |
10:18 |
: I would always count on Mike Scioscia doing the wrong thing and then having some sort of idiotic answer for doing the wrong thing.
|
10:18 |
: You will be over extended.
|
10:18 |
What do you think about odor as a keeper? Keep him over injury risks like tanaka, Richards, Carlos carrasco? Already have Gio, Gausman, as starters. |
10:18 |
: Nope, I would keep one of the pitchers.
|
10:18 |
: Agree with Paul
|
10:18 |
Get rid of odor. |
10:19 |
Where do you two stand on the “Christian Yelich is a top-25 OF in 2015” offseason fantasy storyline? What improves more his batting average or HR total? |
10:19 |
: I would peg Yelich lower than that.
|
10:20 |
: Not top 25, but I haven’t dug into him yet.
|
10:20 |
@Bob: why does it matter ostensibly “when” the money is paid? ML teams have yearly targets, sure, but they’re not living paycheck-to-paycheck. Any savings you think you get by paying now instead of tomorrow — just invest that amount of money and pay it out in four years and capture the interest — ta-da! You paid out as much but made money off the money in the meantime. |
10:20 |
: Yeah, this too.
|
10:21 |
I have a theory that John Hart was brought in to make some unpopular decisions and take a little fire from the fans as John Coppolella was groomed. But I have to admit, I have no idea what the direction is this off-season. I get the Markakis signing, sort of. But Callaspo? Any idea of an end game? |
10:22 |
: I would support this theory. I think the end game is to try to gear up to be good when they open the new ballpark, and also be good in the blandest, non-offensive way possible. Hence, guys like Callaspo and Markakis.
|
10:22 |
: No idea what is going. Seems like they need to pick a lane and go with it.
|
10:22 |
Paul that Scioscia answer is so dead on. I have no idea how he didn’t take any heat for having Calhoun bunt on a 3-1 count with nobody out in Game 1 of the ALDS, even if he moved the runner to 2nd the Royals could have walked the MVP and once a generational talent in Trout. |
10:24 |
: Everything turned out fine IMO
|
10:24 |
: Yeah, he is just a very bad tactical manager. If you search the BP archives, you will find me ripping his decisions a decade ago. He certainly hasn’t lasted so long because he knows what he’s doing strategically.
|
10:24 |
: Hahaha, Jeff.
|
10:24 |
I guess I was thinking of getting the correlation between player and value closer to 1:1, rather than the beginning of the contract being a bargain, and the end of the contract being a burden that makes the team’s fanbase hate them. |
10:24 |
: Eh. the teams fanbase is always going to hate somebody. But point taken.
|
10:25 |
: Good idea, but tough to execute.
|
10:25 |
Can Santana make it through the year as the Twins SS? I’m sure a regression has to be coming but I would think the speed should still be there? |
10:26 |
: Yes could and even with regress he doesn’t look to bad.
|
10:26 |
: Yes, it should, and also since they don’t have anyone better they might as well try. If the plan is for him to play shortstop. I know he played a lot of center field last year, so maybe he will split, or stay in center. No matter the position, regression is coming. But that’s OK.
|
10:26 |
Wil Myers – Is he an upgrade on Seth Smith in Left? And can the Pads move Smith to 1B? |
10:28 |
: Long-term, absolutely. Probably in the short-term as well, as 2014 was probably simultaneously the best of Smith and the worst of Myers and we shouldn’t expect either going forward. Also, if it does push Smith to first, that’d be good, because Alonso is terrible.
|
10:28 |
: I don’t get this trade at all, but they can move him. The problem is they would have Seth Smith at 1B
|
10:28 |
A few people mentioning a third team in the TB-SD trade, thoughts on who it might be? |
10:29 |
: There’s rumors that it will be Seattle, and rumors that it won’t be Seattle. With Myers in play it really opens the field, because plenty of teams could use a young, cost-controlled outfielder. In any case, I don’t think this gets resolved tonight.
|
10:29 |
: I will just go with the default answer: The Dodgers
|
10:30 |
: The default thing that will get resolved right now though is this chat. Thanks for staying up even later than usual with us. This is the last chat of the year, so we’ll catch you in 2015. Hopefully you will all have frank, productive, and most importantly safe holiday seasons. See you soon!
|
10:30 |
Thanks dudes! |
10:31 |
: Bye all.
