FanGraphs Audio: Mark Armour on History’s Best GMs
Episode 530
Mark Armour has contributed extensively to baseball’s literary canon. His most recent work, co-authored with Dan Levitt, is In Pursuit of Pennants, an examination of baseball-operations departments through time. He’s also (with Levitt) ranking the game’s best GMs.

Is it just me or did Mark, uh, ‘mispeak’ when he mentioned the negro leagues?
Yeah, I listened to that part 3 times and he very clearly isn’t saying “negro”…
Yeah I listen to it a couple times and don’t know what to say, maybe a brain freeze brought on by anxiousness over how to refer to it?
I also listened a bunch of times at half-speed and concur with the above.
I just listened to this podcast and was delighted to hear the shout-out to the old Civic Stadium in Eugene, the pre-PK Park home of the short-season single-A Eugene Emeralds.
I have been in Eugene since 1985 and for the past 14 years have lived a short walk from the old ball park. It was truly a great place to watch a game. Hearing Carson talk about how the foul balls would hit and roll down off the roof brought back fond memories.
It broke my heart when the Emeralds made the decision to move to the new University of Oregon park in 2010 and it saddens me every time I go past the old stadium (usually at least twice a day) and see it sitting empty.
There is a group making an effort to buy the stadium and renovate it into a multi-sport (mainly soccer) facility: http://www.savecivicstadium.org/
Sadly, I doubt baseball will ever be played there again.
