FanGraphs Audio: The Deleted Dayn Perry

Episode 150
Dayn Perry, as he is on most Tuesdays, is the guest on this particular Tuesday edition of the podcast, in which we chronicle Perry’s first working day with CBS Sports’ Eye on Baseball — including an examination of the exhilarating circumstances that led to one of his posts being deleted by an administrator.

I can only imagine the sizzling details revealed in Mr. Perry’s redacted prose. Much like Carson’s previous snafu with Dave Cameron, it has been lost within the vast sea of information, known as the Internet. Is there any chance of retrieving this vital, historic record of Dayn’s first deleted work for CBS?

I have not listened to this episode yet, but I just wanted to share a thought I had regarding Mr. Perry’s new job. First of all, I congratulate him. I have enjoyed his creative NotGraphs work a lot. And second, while I would not say I was disappointed in the CBS posts, I was reminded their straight reporting style is intended for a different audience. This situation reminds me of the mid-20th century jazz artists like Charlie Parker who played standard gigs for white audiences for the early shows, but then performed more creative, edgy shows for the after hours crowd at black clubs. What I’m trying to say is that Dayn Perry is the black saxophone player of baseball writing.

I’ve listened to a few of these podcasts, and I’m just not feeling it. I have nothing against Carson, but he is just brutal on the podcast. Hopefully fangraphs replaces him with someone else at some point.

The two of you are capable of some decent banter, but combining Carson’s predilection for pregnant pauses, Dayn’s compulsive use of the word “yeah”, and an unapologetic lack of content can make for a fairly underwhelming final product.
