FanGraphs Audio: The Super Wrong Kiley McDaniel

Episode 543
Kiley McDaniel is both (a) the lead prospect writer for FanGraphs and also (b) the guest on this particular edition of FanGraphs Audio — during which edition he discusses, almost by accident, most of the top-10 prospects for the 2015 amateur draft.

The first time I heard Carson Cistulli talk for a few minutes, I wanted to stab myself in the ears with a fork, now I find him extremely entertaining and somewhat informative too. True story.

I like his voice. It’s like extra buttery popcorn, popping in a microwave that’s powered by life and a love of baseball.

…I am not good at analogies.

I feel every episode there comes a time where I go, “Man, where were you when I was studying for my SATs. If they would’ve ever taught SAT words through baseball talk, I’d have never bothered with those horrible notecards that didn’t even help.

The first time I heard Cistulli converse with Kiley McDaniel I thought there was a weird power struggle/dynamic. Now I still think that. Or it could be shtick.

The sexual tension between them is unreal

It’s nice to hear that Carson and Kiley have regressed back to being mildly contemptuous of each other. Top shelf podcasting!

How about a podcast with both Kiley and Dayn?

I don’t think there’s any tension or struggle. Carson simply has a somewhat affected Ivy League style of expressing himself (which he manages to pull of without sounding arrogant) and Kiley doesn’t join in the way that Perry or Cameron do. Kiley’s too busy trying to be a rap fan to join in.

Or an hour long podcast of Carson talking fudgicles with his grandfather – oh wait, that’s been done. At least he warns you when he’s not going to talk baseball at all. If only the normal podcasts came with the same warning to be able to fast forward to get to actual content when someone else is speaking.

Is there someway to filter out Kiley’s “jokes” before listening to these pods?

Carson asking “Why 1984?” is the most meta thing I’ve heard in ages. Shame Kiley didn’t pick up on that.
