There needs to be a Fangraphs Basketball wing of this site
No one cares about the NBA. Also, this is a baseball site. That is all.
I love basketball, but am new to this basketball analytics stuff. Why is Total Shooting % := Pts/(2*(FGA+.44*FTA)) not Pts/(3*3PA+2*(FGA-3PA)+1*FTA). It seems like the latter is more logical. Can someone explain, or point me in the direction of a basketball analytics site I can ask/find the answer? (Also, this .44 weight comes up a lot, why?)

I figure it out, if any one cares its: TS% := Made Baskets (weighted for worth) per Possession Ending in a Shot. Made Baskets= 1.5 * 3P + 2P + .5 * FT = PTS/2. Possessions ending with a shot = FGA+.44FTA. Why .44? 2 free throw attempts would usually equal one field goal attempt, but there are also “and 1s”. The stats tell us that 9 Free Throw Attempts = 4 Field Goal Attempts. Thus, the number of possessions that end with a shot are FGA + 4/9 FTA.
