I don’t think sportswriters collude to have a bias, but I do believe there is a strong herd mentality out there, especially amongst internet outlets.
So, if WAR undervalues switch hitting in late inning situations, the same just might be true for LOOGY relievers since 50 of the top 100 OPS’s last year were by LH hitters or switch hitters, yet LHP’s make up only about 25% of pitchers.
Agree that Cain is more likely to sign a contract extension than Lincecum. I just hope that as soon as the Giants realize that the chances of extending either one is < 50%, they trade them rather than waiting to get draft picks in return which could be disastrous for their longterm future. Much as I support Brian Sabean, I'm not convinced he's the right guy to pull off a Billy Beane type trade, although he sorta did it with Matt Williams a long, long time ago.

How does Harper hit FA at 23 or 24 if he makes the majors this year? He doesn’t have a day of service time yet and we’re entering the 2012 season. Add 6 and you get 2018 at the earliest.
Major league deals for draftees don’t work like that.
Major league deals use up option years, so Harper uses up an option year for every year he’s in the minors and has to stay on the 40 man roster. If Harper’s as good as advertised, or even a serviceable major leaguer, this is a non-issue.
He ONLY accrues service time when he is on the 25 man roster or the MLB DL. That’s the only time that counts towards free agency. He still has to get the 6 years of service time before hitting FA.
If his contract runs out before he hits the 6 year service time mark, he’ll be arbitration eligible for the remaining seasons.
I also understand that the MLB contract has nothing to do with service time or FA.

I really disagree with the 12:47 comment that the Red Sox underperformed in 2011 and that’s why they missed the playoffs.
The Sox just got a career year from Ellsbury, great years from Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez, a pretty sweet rebound from David Ortiz, a productive and fairly healthy year from Beckett, Scutaro was well above average for the position, Salty did more in 2011 than ever before . . . all of that is not underperformance. If anything it is the opposite.
Sure, Crawford sucked and Lackey was bad and Buchholz got hurt. But what team does not have a few guys that fall into the same boat?
I don’t have the answer as to why the Sox ‘struggled’ with 90 wins. I think the likely explanation is bad luck down the stretch + a miraculous TB run = everyone thinks the Sox just blew.
The Braves don’t overvalue Jurrjens anymore than the Orioles overvalue Adam Jones.

Nats signed Harper to a major league deal. He’s on the 40 man roster. It was only a 5 year deal. He’s only 19 so 4+19=23.

The individual players might not have underperformed but the team as a whole (as far as wins/losses go) certainly did underperform.
