It seems that the Phillies are overperforming their underlying indicators (per WAR, 3rd order wins, and SRS) yet again. Could there be a reason for this? How good do you think they actually are?

Please stop talking about your medical condition in the chats. Just some friendly feedback. We come to the chats for baseball, not your personal life.
I couldn’t disagree more strongly. I’m thrilled to hear how well treatment is going, and I think it’s amazing that you’re continuing to work through it. Good for us as your readers. We’re with you, and I *want* to hear how life is going as we’re also chatting baseball.
Then send him a personal email or tweet him. This is Fangraphs a baseball site. I just want to make sure he knows only a tiny minority wants to hear about his personal life (not just talking about his hospital stay, but in general too, ie . when he was telling people about finding a new house).
I don’t care to read your opinions on what the other readers of this site want. This is a baseball discussion site not a pick-on-the-guy-who-provides-excellent-free-baseball-content-while-battling-leukemia site. Feel free to read other authors if you don’t want to hear how Dave is doing.
Since you were unhappy with the content, we will be happy to reimburse you for the full amount of what you paid to read this chat. You can expect your refund shortly.
Better yet, double it! You won’t find value like that this side of Alex Anthopolous. Glad your recovery is progressing dave.

As long as he’s not pushing it all over the place, there’s nothing wrong with mentions or answering questions about it.

To whoever brought it up, Hultzen didn’t get an 8.5 MM bonus, he got 8.5 MM guaranteed on a 5 year MLB deal. That money is spread out over the deal and includes salaries he’d be getting if he made the majors anyway (basically, unlike Cole who took a minor league deal he doesn’t earn anything more for getting the call to the bigs).

I have a question about BAPIP for hitters. Does hit placement, an at least partially controllable skill, have a considerable effect on what’s often deemed a “luck” stat? Extreme example, if you had two players with the same GB and FB percentages, but one hit all his groundballs in the hole/up the middle and his fly balls in the gaps, while the other one pulled all his fly balls and chopped all his grounders to infielders, wouldn’t that have an extreme effect on BAPIP? You wouldn’t even have to fall back on the “he hits the ball really hard” argument. I guess the more germane question is how much players can control that, but could hittin’ em where they ain’t be an explanation for guys with seemingly unreasonably high BAPIPS over their careers (Michael Morse, Joey Votto, Matt Holliday)? It kind of begs for some defense-independent BAPIP stat, as contradictory as that sounds.
If a hitter like Votto has an established track record of high BABIPs (career .355) and is getting even more hits to drop in than he usually does, you’d expect him to regress, but not as much as someone who has had poor BABIPs for years like Casey Kotchman (career .282)

Saying Dave provides free content implies that he does this just cause he’s a great guy. He makes a living off Fangraphs and I assume he’s paid by his advertisers. Advertisers won’t pay to run their ads on this site if people like me don’t visit it. People like me won’t visit it if every article or chat is gonna have irrelevant stuff in it about people’s personal lives. Either move that crap to Notgraphs (AKA the part of the site no one frequents) or resign.
Nobody said Dave provides free content. Fangraphs provides free content. And generally speaking, writers gather a following for two reasons: 1) people like their writing and 2) people like them. Ever read a Keith Law chat? They’re probably 60% baseball at best, yet he has an ardent following. Jonah Keri used to personalize his chats quite a bit as well, and his chats were must-read. In general, I think Dave includes less personal information than the large majority of chat moderators who I read on a regular basis. In this case, it was what, one comment and then one or two other responses? Hardly anything.
But really, there’s nothing to discuss here. You’re under the false impression that you’re the leader of some large contingent of people who are unhappy that Dave mentioned his recovery. In reality, you’re just a solitary asshole with no heart; the large contingent is comprised of fans who appreciate the work Dave does at fangraphs and are happy to hear he’s more likely to survive than he was a month ago.
the brewers position players aren’t that much better than the braves? braun, weeks, fielder are MUCH better than the braves can throw out there. they have mcCann. and thats about it.

I’m pretty sure the tiny minority is you. Usually I don’t care about an author’s personal life, but for Christ’s sake show some compassion.
Danny Boy, the minority is you, and you’re a douche. moving on….

So far as I can tell you are solidly in the minority on the this one, so Zip It.
Sweet Lord, the internet sucks.

Put succinctly, you’re a dickhead.
