FanGraphs Is Hiring! Seeking a Full-Time Prospect Writer

Please note, the application period for this position is now closed. Thank you for your interest.

FanGraphs is now accepting applications to join our staff as a full-time prospect writer.

The prospect writer will work with lead prospect analyst Eric Longenhagen and other members of the FanGraphs staff to produce organizational top prospect lists, amateur draft coverage, and other minor league and prospect-related content. A successful candidate will be able to evaluate prospects using in-person looks, video scouting, and data. Familiarity and comfort with advanced statistics is a requirement, as is prior scouting or prospect evaluation experience and a firm understanding of the minor league landscape. Just as importantly, we’re looking for a writer who can generate their own ideas, produce lively and engaging prose, and detail what makes a prospect good (or bad) in a way that is educational, accurate, and fun to read.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce, both independently and in collaboration with other prospect writers, top prospect lists, which are comprised of roughly 1,500 scouting reports annually
  • Produce written reports and player pref lists based on in-person looks and video scouting, as well as relevant data
  • Contribute to the site’s amateur draft coverage
  • Produce other prospect-related content throughout the year
  • Assist in maintaining The Board
  • Assist in trade deadline and transaction coverage
  • Other writing as assigned

Skills

Minimum Skills:

  • Prior scouting or prospect evaluation experience
  • Deep familiarity with modern baseball statistics and the minor league and amateur baseball landscapes
  • Familiarity with the scouting scale
  • A keen eye for detail, and high standards for accuracy and clarity
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings as required by the baseball calendar and news cycle. This position will also require periodic travel to games, as well key scouting events and showcases.
  • Ability to cultivate scouting and other baseball operations contacts to source pertinent information and data
  • Basic competency and familiarity with G-suite, email, and Slack
  • College degree or equivalent experience

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with SynergySports or other video scouting platforms
  • Familiarity with the SABR style guide
  • Experience with multimedia production/editing
  • Experience working within a WordPress CMS

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. As FanGraphs is a web-based company, relocation is not required; this job can be completed from most geographic locations, as long as you have reliable internet access and are willing to work during the hours that readers in the United States are awake, though proximity to minor league affiliates or big conference college facilities is a strong plus. Some weekend and evening work will be required, as will periodic travel. We encourage candidates of all backgrounds and identities to apply.

If you think you’d be a good fit for the site, please send us an email at wanted@fangraphs.com with your application materials, using the subject line “FanGraphs Full-Time Prospect Writer – 2025”. The subject line is important, as it helps us keep all of the applications organized and ensures that yours does not slip through the cracks. When applying, please include:

  • A current résumé
  • Sample reports evaluating two hitter and two pitcher prospects. You may select the players, but at least two of them should be in the lower levels of the minors. These evaluations should approximate the sort of reports you might see on a FanGraphs top prospect list, complete with relevant tool grades. For the purposes of this exercise, you may use a scouting scale other than Future Value (i.e. B2, C1, etc) if that’s what you’re most accustomed to. Please describe the sources of information you used when compiling the reports.
  • Other samples of your written work you feel would give us a sense of your voice and perspective on the game

Please be sure to send us your application by Monday, September 22. The precise start date of the position is flexible, but our goal is to have someone hired and onboarded in time to assist with our next prospect list cycle, which begins this fall. We can’t promise to respond to every application we receive, but we will make sure every applicant receives serious consideration.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Awesome! Looking forward to whoever you bring on board as a new, talented prospect writer! (Once upon a time, I might have thought about applying myself…)
