Position: Data Engineer

Job Purpose:
The Data Engineer will work closely with the Data team and the Baseball Systems team to maintain, enhance, and extend the Cincinnati Reds data pipelines. You will be responsible for collecting and transforming data from various sources as well as preparing and distributing data for consumption by the department’s systems and analysts. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder who excels at automating and optimizing data systems, with a strong preference for cloud experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create, maintain, and optimize data ETL pipelines to support operations, software, and analysts.
  • Document, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with data processes and identify areas to improve ingestion
  • Collaborate with the Development and Research teams on data solutions.
  • Extend our Azure cloud platform initiative.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements.
  • Work with stakeholders to utilize data to create innovative solutions to baseball operations problems.
  • Prepare data sets for processing and research.
  • Create database tables, stored procedures, and views using Microsoft SQL Server and associated tools.
  • Understand other baseball development projects related to support and code review.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with cloud services including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or similar services.
  • Experience working with relational databases, such as SQL Server.
  • Experience with SQL, including writing and maintaining queries.
  • Familiarity with advanced statistical baseball concepts, including advanced statistics and player evaluation metrics.

Work Environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Position: Baseball Developer

Job Title: Baseball Developer

Job Purpose:
The Baseball Developer will be responsible for developing, maintaining, testing and implementing web based, desktop and/or mobile applications to support the Baseball Operations staff.

This role reviews, analyzes and develops information systems including planning, design, develop, testing, debugging and installation to support the applications and systems of the organization. This role will be expected to write documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections. The Baseball Developer will be a continual learner and develop their skills to become a full stack, multi-platform technologist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cross-departmental communication with the Data Systems and Development, Information Technology and Baseball Operations staffs to understand department needs and develop technical solutions that integrate existing and future applications into the organization’s information systems.
  • Employ an iterative software development approach to ensure quick rollout along with incremental improvements to baseball systems over time.
  • Design, develop, test, implement and maintain software solutions while making use of industry best practices and recommended coding standards to write clear, readable, and efficient code.
  • Create specifications through gathering and documentation of user requirements as needed.
  • Work with Baseball Operations staff to prototype and implement user interfaces that are efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing. Identify features and functions to be incorporated into baseball applications, including solicitation of feedback from Baseball Operations staff and involvement in staff meetings to evaluate system and prioritize additions/improvements.
  • Create database tables, stored procedures, and views using Microsoft SQL Server and associated tools.
  • Understand other baseball development projects related to support and code review.
  • Adhere to Reds I.T. technical standards, security, support protocols, and server hardware / software build outs.
  • Responsible for training staff on use of applications, including in-person training and development and maintenance of a reference manual as needed.
  • Collaborate with other developers on technologies, techniques, and processes that can be helpful to the group.

Experience, Education and Licensure:

  • BS degree or equivalent experience in a computational science or technical field.
  • A minimum of 1 years of experience developing applications utilizing the Microsoft technology stack or mobile development particularly using Swift and iOS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft .NET using C# and WebAPI / MVC Framework.
  • Experience using web technologies particularly HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge and experience with at least one JavaScript framework such as Angular, Vue.js, React, or similar framework.
  • Relational SQL knowledge, and cloud services are nice to have skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to a variety of programming environments (frontend, backend, and mobile) and identify the best tools and libraries for new tasks.
  • Passion for baseball, strong intellectual curiosity, and ability to work with a team framework highly desired.
