Position: Baseball Analytics Trainee

Department: Baseball Operations
Reports To: Director of Baseball Analytics
Job Purpose: Assist the Baseball Analytics department’s research and development efforts within new and existing applications. While the role will primarily be focused on analytics, there will be opportunities to gain general Baseball Operations experiences as well.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Major League Operations and Player Development departments to design and implement statistical analyses.
  • Generate ideas for new models and tools to improve on-field and front office operations.
  • Assist Analytics and Baseball Operations staff with data analysis, preparation, maintenance and collection.
  • Assist in designing, developing, testing and implementing models and metrics utilizing appropriate tools and techniques.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A deep love of baseball. You will be working with some of the most data-hungry stakeholders in the game. You should be as passionate about using data to make the Reds better as they are.
  • Understanding of typical baseball data structures, and knowledge of current baseball research, statistics and strategy.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning and predictive modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical software (e.g. R, Python).
  • Familiarity with SQL.
  • Ability to take requests from non-technical stakeholders and make compelling products.

Work Environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Hours may periodically include nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Remote working accommodations are available.

Position: Quantitative Developer Trainee

Department: Baseball Operations
Reports To: Director of Baseball Analytics
Job Purpose: The Cincinnati Reds are looking for a quantitative developer trainee with an eye for design who can turn massive amounts of player data into compelling and actionable tools. This is a high leverage role where you will be communicating directly with coaches and building tools that you will see used every day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Generate reports and data tools for Reds players and coaches, turning complex data into clear information through visual displays and visual best practices.
  • Assist analytics in getting models and tools into the hands of coaches and executives.
  • Work with data engineers to help build pipelines for efficient delivery of information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A deep love of baseball. You will be working with some of the most data-hungry stakeholders in the game. You should be as passionate about using data to make the Reds better as they are.
  • An eye for design.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interpret requirements, make informed design decisions and collaborate to deliver high quality finished products.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of web design.
  • Basic understanding of data visualization best practices.
  • Experience with data visualization and designing reports.
  • Experience with tools for interactive data visualization (Apache Superset, Plotly, Shiny, d3, Tableau, PowerBI).
  • Comfort with SQL and a language used for statistical programming (i.e. R or Python).
