Summary:
The San Diego Padres are seeking Interns in Sports Science. Each Sports Science Intern will be based out of one of the Padres minor league affiliates (Low-A Lake Elsinore, High-A Fort Wayne, Double-A San Antonio, Triple-A El Paso, or our Complex in Peoria). Candidates can indicate which affiliates they are able to locate to during the application process. Interns will be responsible for collecting/maintaining/organizing data from all player development technologies and using that data to assist coaches and other Sports Science staff in designing and implementing development plans for players in the Padres organization.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the use of player performance technology pertaining to both pitching and hitting, including wearable, radar-based, and camera-based systems.
  • Collect, maintain, and organize data from all player development technologies.
  • Maintain consistent testing and assessment protocols with all player development technologies and other methods of tracking.
  • Collaborate with other members of Sports Science, S&C, and Medical on assessing and monitoring player performance and injury risk.
  • Facilitate the communication of accurate data reporting structures to coaches, staff, and players.
  • Spearhead continued education efforts on the uses and application of player development technologies and other data sources with coaches, staff, and players.
  • Assist in researching new modalities and applications of player development technologies.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Passion about biomechanics, particularly in relation to player development and injury risk mitigation is preferred.
  • Critical thinking skills to answer biomechanics-related questions and to test research hypotheses.
  • Desire to learn about the ins and out of baseball player development and sports science.
  • Ability to relocate to one of the Padres MiLB affiliates or spring training complex.
  • Familiarity and previous experience working with baseball technologies such as Blast, Rapsodo, K-Vest, and Trackman is preferred.
  • Professional image and demeanor.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and organizational skills.
  • Minimum physical requirements: able to travel and gain access to various areas of the ballpark for prolonged periods of time during games and events. Able to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • As a condition of employment, the job candidate(s) must successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment background check, drug screen and provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (at least 14 days have passed since receiving final dose of vaccine).
