Position: Detroit Tigers Manager, Baseball Analytics

Location: Detroit

Description:
The Detroit Tigers are currently seeking a full-time Manager of Baseball Analytics. This role will be responsible for managing analytics and research within Baseball Operations. Reports to the Sr. Director, Baseball Analytics and Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced quantitative analysis to improve Baseball Operations decision-making, including predictive modeling and player projection systems.
  • Contribute to baseball decision-making by generating ideas for player acquisition, roster construction and in-game strategies.
  • Complete ad hoc data queries and effectively present analysis through the use of written reports and data visualizations.
  • Mentor a team of Baseball Analysts, assisting with their projects and providing best practices.
  • Supervise, provide feedback, and guide project work conducted by external consultants.
  • Manage the integration of baseball analysis into our proprietary tools and applications.
  • Maintain and support the current data warehousing process within Baseball Operations.
  • Oversee the process of importing, cleaning and updating baseball datasets.
  • Assist with the design and development of new analytic applications.
  • Monitor, identify and recommend new or emerging techniques, technologies, models and algorithms.
  • Meet with vendors and make recommendations for investment in new data and technology resources.
  • Other projects as directed the Baseball Operations leadership team.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of baseball-specific data, modern statistical techniques, and sabermetric analysis.
  • Expertise with SQL and relational databases is required.
  • Relevant work experience with statistical software (R, STATA, SPSS, SAS, or similar) and scripting languages such as Python.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability in the areas of programming, software-coding, ETL, and/or machine learning techniques.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated leadership and self-direction.
  • Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and teaching abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts to colleagues possessing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience developing advanced projection models.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as dictated by the baseball calendar.
  • Willing and able to relocate to the Detroit metro area.

Position: Detroit Tigers Data Architect, Baseball Analytics

Location: Detroit

Description:
The Detroit Tigers are currently seeking a full-time Data Architect in their Baseball Analytics department. This role will be responsible for understanding the Baseball Operations decision-making process, developing a familiarity with the data required to make those decisions and creating tools and systems to display and expedite the access to that data. Reports to the Sr. Director, Baseball Analytics and Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand and document current database structures, historical design decisions, format, definitions, limitations and content of currently used external and internal data feeds, and establish future requirements.
  • Maintain and support the current warehousing process, starting with structured and unstructured data, conceiving and designing appropriate data structures, performing ETL processes to house the data in the data structures and exposing the data structures to end users.
  • Design and manage a new data warehouse capable of supporting reporting and analytics to improve the currently deployed and future systems.
  • Develop and maintain data quality assurance processes to ensure database integrity.
  • Oversee the evaluation, selection, implementation and support of new database systems.
  • Collaborate with members of the Baseball Operations department to develop best practices for storing and displaying baseball data.
  • Recommend new data sources for purchase and/or new techniques to gather data.
  • Develop and maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models.
  • Complete ad-hoc database queries and analysis as directed.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of related work experience is required, including demonstrated knowledge about data management best practices, long-term maintainability of code and ability to effectively solve problems pertaining to data infrastructure and integrity.
  • Strong passion for baseball and robust understanding of current baseball research.
  • Expertise with SQL and relational databases is required.
  • Experience with at least one of Python, Ruby, Perl, C++ and/or other programming languages is required.
  • Experience processing large amounts of JSON formatted data strongly preferred.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field; Master’s degree a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership and self-direction.
  • Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and teaching abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts to colleagues possessing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Position: Detroit Tigers Intern, Baseball Analytics

Location: Detroit

Description:
The Detroit Tigers are looking for Baseball Analytics Interns who will assist with the day to day operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with importing, cleaning, and preparing of baseball datasets.
  • Assist with the design, development, testing and support of proprietary data collection and decision-support systems.
  • Design ad hoc SQL queries.
  • Assist with statistical modeling of baseball data.
  • Execute exploratory research and analysis as directed.
  • Review public research on a regular basis.
  • Provide support for important events such as the Rule 4 Draft, the trade deadline, contract negotiations and salary arbitration.
  • Support Baseball Operations, Scouting and Player Development with ad hoc requests.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate must be at least a college senior or recent graduate (within 6 months).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with SQL querying and database design principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with baseball-specific data, modern statistical techniques and sabermetric analysis.
  • Familiarity with R/Python and/or other software applications/languages used for statistical calculations and graphical representations, a plus.
  • Experience with software development, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, and implementation, a plus.
  • Experience with ETL processes that integrate multiple data sources, a plus.
  • The ideal candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ideal candidate must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated with excellent attention to detail.
  • The ideal candidate must be available full-time.
  • The ideal candidate must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as dictated by the baseball calendar.
