Updated Combined WAR Leaderboard

Within our Leaders menu there sits a Combined WAR Leaderboard under the WAR Tools sub-header. It has pitchers and position players on one leaderboard to compare their WAR. We’ve made an update, so the leaderboard now displays “Total WAR”, and not just WAR from their primary role. This was necessary because a certain two-way player started playing in the league this season.

We retained the old WAR values from the previous version and labeled that “Primary WAR”, so a traditional NL pitcher will only have his pitching WAR in the “Primary WAR” column. The “Total WAR” column will display his batting (position player) WAR + pitching WAR. This is particularly interesting for pitchers like Madison Bumgarner.

The primary role is determined by looking at all the appearance the player has made, it works well with players in the traditional roles. Shohei Ohtani’s primary role is displaying as a position player. The primary role only affects the which WAR is reported to the “Primary WAR”. “Total WAR” is unaffected by roles. (As of 4/21/2018, you’ll find Shohei Ohtani on the second page of the leaderboard.)

This leaderboard is a candidate for additional overhaul and expansion, so let us know if there are additional features that would be useful for a combined WAR leaderboard.

A combined WAR leaderboard for teams would be great. Maybe similar to the depth charts positions grid, but for past production rather than ROS projections.

I assume there is a huge hitting positional adjustment for pitchers. Are you giving Ohtani the DH adjustment when he DHs and the pitcher adjustment when he is hitting as a pitcher?

Of course, but Ohtani doesn’t hit as a pitcher, only as a DH. He probably would produce more value in the NL hitting only when pitching than in the AL with several times more PA as a DH:

Ohtani’s positional adjustment is based on the positions he actually plays, not solely as a pitcher.

I think it’s a great idea to have both FIP-WAR and RA-WAR available to switch on-the-fly and I’m wondering if it could be implemented on other pages as well.

Is it practical to display PA, IP, position player WAR, and pitching WAR for all players, regardless of their primary position?

Pitcher WAR should always be displayed as their total. The deconstructed parts (minus adjustments) are also there. It makes no sense to exclude pitchers’ other WAR.

Why does it only show PA for Ohtani and not IP as well?

Judge not being top 10, let alone #1, is ludacris.

Well, he has 1.4 WAR now (which does put him in the top 10), and he had 0.2 WAR yesterday, so when this screenshot was taken he was probably at 1.2 WAR and tied with the people at the bottom.

No, but Christopher Brian Bridges is.

It should have always been like this. A guy like Bumgarner could rack up significant value as a hitter when the baseline is replacement level pitcher hitting.

Now that we have this take care of, can someone fix the Total Team WAR leaderboards on the front page? They aren’t in numeric order.

Where is pitcher fielding accounted for — on the pitching side, or the hitting side?
