Introducing KBO Stats on FanGraphs!

I’m pleased to announce that FanGraphs now has KBO player stats going back to 2002!

Currently, these stats are available on player pages and include full season stat lines. They will be updated nightly to reflect the previous day’s games.

We’ve integrated a new section into our player search specifically designated for international players. Any player you search for who has played in the KBO will show up in the International section as well as in the Major or Minor League sections if they have MLB-affiliated playing time.

You can also search for KBO players using both Roman language characters and Korean (Hangul) characters. We’ve tried our best to use the official Roman character translations for Korean players, but if you notice something that doesn’t look right, please let us know in the comments and we will make corrections as needed.

You Aren't a FanGraphs Member
It looks like you aren't yet a FanGraphs Member (or aren't logged in). We aren't mad, just disappointed.
We get it. You want to read this article. But before we let you get back to it, we'd like to point out a few of the good reasons why you should become a Member.
1. Ad Free viewing! We won't bug you with this ad, or any other.
2. Unlimited articles! Non-Members only get to read 10 free articles a month. Members never get cut off.
3. Dark mode and Classic mode!
4. Custom player page dashboards! Choose the player cards you want, in the order you want them.
5. One-click data exports! Export our projections and leaderboards for your personal projects.
6. Remove the photos on the home page! (Honestly, this doesn't sound so great to us, but some people wanted it, and we like to give our Members what they want.)
7. Even more Steamer projections! We have handedness, percentile, and context neutral projections available for Members only.
8. Get FanGraphs Walk-Off, a customized year end review! Find out exactly how you used FanGraphs this year, and how that compares to other Members. Don't be a victim of FOMO.
9. A weekly mailbag column, exclusively for Members.
10. Help support FanGraphs and our entire staff! Our Members provide us with critical resources to improve the site and deliver new features!
We hope you'll consider a Membership today, for yourself or as a gift! And we realize this has been an awfully long sales pitch, so we've also removed all the other ads in this article. We didn't want to overdo it.

There are a few things to note about the stats we currently have on the player pages:

  • wRC+ is currently league adjusted but not park adjusted. We hope to have park factors at some point in the future.
  • Players who play for multiple teams in a single will not have their stat lines separated by team; their stat lines will display the most recent team they played for in that season. We are working on a solution for this, but it’s actually more complicated than expected.

Big thanks goes out to Brian Cartwright, FanGraphs alumni and President and Chief Data Scientist of FlashStats Inc., for working with us on the data!

We expect to have a number of additional features coming soon, including leaderboards and a much more robust selection of stats for this current season. We will make announcements as they become available. Thank you so much for your support of FanGraphs, which allows us to bring you new features like this. We hope these stats enhance your enjoyment of the KBO season!

Is there a leaders page??? That’s what I’d like. Have a rolling leaders board.

This is amazing. The lack of any player ID system for a league with two different alphabets was absolutely maddening!

This is a somewhat minor one I guess but I am seeing most sites have him listed as Chan-gyu Lim (11/20/1992) and you have him listed as Chan-kyu Im.

I am also having no luck finding a handful of guys (specifically three of the probable starters for tonight). Are there still more players to be loaded onto the site? Yong-chan Lee for example. You have him listed on your ZiPS article, but I can’t find him when searching.

Thanks so much for adding these! It is going to make research so much easier now.

The data for a handful of his seasons with Doosan is missing, of note being the two most recent (2018 and 2019).

Will there be CPBL stats as well?

I really hope so too. Maybe because they started first or simply because their games are free on twitter and have start times that make it easier to watch live, I’m more interested in the CPBL than the KBO.

Will there eventually be stats going back to 1982? How about NPB stats?

This is very cool, can’t compliment you enough…. but since you’re clearly cool with including non-MLB-affiliated stats, and with no shade intended, can I ask why Negro League stats have never been added?

Hello David – would be happy to discuss Negro League stats fitting into the FanGraphs universe, if you would like.

Are Steamer projections assuming the player is playing in MLB or KBO?

You can check KBO stats/advanced stats such as park-adjusted wRC+ on http://www.statiz.co.kr/main.php by searching players’ names in Hangul. The site even has its own WAR displayed!

Hyun Jong Yang has the right player information, however he’s a pitcher and not a dh…so it doesn’t show any of his pitching stats…

Will there be a sortable KBO player stats section in the Leaders section anytime soon? And, with this new KBO addition to the site, have you guys marketed fangraphs in Korea at all? Could be another source of revenue/funding, you guys do great work!

This is very useful and very fun, thanks. Is it possible there’s a bug with the FIPs you guys are displaying, though? I’m noticing for Won-sam Jang in particular some numbers that don’t look right: 6.16 ERA/1.23 FIP in 2018, 5.61 ERA/1.72 FIP in 2017, 3.55 ERA/0.18 FIP in 2012 to give a few examples. Unless this guy is the unluckiest pitcher in the world, it sure looks to me as though something is going wrong somewhere. I can’t verify the trustworthiness of kbofancystats.com, but his FIPs there (https://www.kbofancystats.com/players/1265/) look far more believable.
