Is the Baseball Dead?
The first month of the season was marked by cold weather throughout much of the country. It seemed to have an adverse affect on offense, with power numbers particularly affected. MLB players put up an isolated-power figure of .156 this March and April, which was the lowest mark since April of 2016. Rob Arthur, who has performed extensive research on the juiced ball, noticed the ball wasn’t traveling quite as far in early April even after accounting for weather — this despite a barrage of homers in the spring. Alex Chamberlain conducted some research of his own and determined hard-hit balls and barrels weren’t doing as much damage as in previous seasons, and he wondered if baseballs had been de-juiced. It’s an interesting question that deserves further research.
Chamberlain speculated that MLB had taken the juice out of the ball, potentially through the use of humidors. He found that hitters had to hit the ball harder to get it out of the park. He also observed that, when controlling for exit velocity and launch angle, batted balls weren’t quite doing the same damage as in years past. He concluded that, since we are now well past the cold-weather days of April, the change in batted balls this season is meaningful.
To examine the issue further, let’s take a look at ISO by month back to the beginning of 2015, just before the balls changed.

I’ve place an asterisk above the April of each year above to note the start of the season. We can see, in 2015, the effect of a juiced ball emerging in August and September. It should also be noted that April is the least powerful month in every season, and in each of the last two years before this one, we saw a rise in May and again in June before a leveling off for the rest of the year. Although April ISO was lower this season than a year ago, it might have been fair to blame the weather. To that point, we saw a fairly typical jump in May. What we haven’t seen this year is the jump in June and July, when (along with August) ISO is typically highest.
We might speculate that better pitching is the cause for the lack of power this season, but Chamberlain’s research indicates the opposite. We can dig a bit deeper and look at wOBA-xwOBA by month going back to the 2015 season. What xwOBA provides is a general baseline expectation of outcomes based on launch angle and exit velocity. We would expect a low, even negative number in April when the weather is colder because the ball doesn’t travel as far. Balls that might be expected to leave the park stay inside it, reducing the actual outcome below the expected outcome. The graph below generally confirms that line of thought.

In each of the past two Aprils, xwOBA has undershot wOBA by about 10 points, making up the difference later in the year. That information helps to explain why I found that early-season xwOBA had a stronger correlation to rest-of-season wOBA than wOBA itself did when I looked at the numbers a year ago. What sticks out in the graph above is just how large the difference was this April, and while the numbers are getting closer as the season wears on, we are still at a negative figure even as the weather has warmed up. The contrast is even more stark when looking only at Barrels, which this season are the top 7% of batted balls in terms of expected results.

We see the same patterns from 2015 through 2017, but we haven’t had near the normal correction for June — and it has actually gotten worse so far this month, although it is early. That negative number on the barrels is mostly responsible for the large negative number overall. Baseball Savant classifies batted balls in six different categories. In the four weakest categories, xwOBA exceeds wOBA by just 7 points. On solid contact, the level below Barrels, the difference is 14 points, and on Barrels, the difference is 149 points. Despite comprising just 13% of batted balls, Barrels and solid contact account for 76% of the difference between xwOBA and wOBA this season. The better contact a player makes in 2018, the more likely he is to feel suffer the influence of this “de-juiced ball” effect.
To provide a comparison, the graph below includes both ISO and xwOBA-wOBA on Barrels since the beginning of 2016. Note that the highest month for ISO in each of the last two seasons has been June.

Unlike the previous two seasons, ISO has been highest in May this year. Based on these trends, those expecting a homer barrage this summer might be disappointed. April was always going to be a modest month for power, and an early start to the season plus unseasonably cold weather provided cover for the big power drop. It turns out that drop was much bigger than should have expected. While we are seeing a somewhat normal correction over the past few months, that correction is still leading to results well below what we should expect based on the quality of the contact.
Whether this is the result of humidors or some subtle change to the ball, that isn’t clear from this data. What does seem clear, though, is that the ball isn’t traveling as far. A year ago, when a batter made recorded either “solid contact” or a Barrel on a fly ball from May 1 through July 12, the ball traveled 392 feet on average. This season, from May 1 to July 12, on the same type of contact, the ball has traveled just 385 feet. That’s a big difference — and a big part of the reason why batted balls traveled out of the yard 4.9% of the time last year and just 4.5% of the time this season. That figure is still in line with 2016 and higher than pre-2016 figures, but it is a pretty clear reversal of a trend that had been ongoing for the last few seasons. The ball isn’t dead, but it might not be as lively as it was the past few seasons.

To clarify, I fully understand that a sample size of 1 unimportant game is meaningless, but I thought it was kind of funny that the day after a record 10 HR’s were hit in the all-star game, an article about how the baseball has become dead is written.
Short list of factors that this simple analysis isn’t accounting for: The launch angle revolution, the fact that the game no longer counts and players aren’t being managed like it’s a playoff game, both teams used the DH which has only been happening in NL parks for 7 years.
This is funny and since it’s an exhibition I don’t doubt that they busted out some June 2017 vintage balls for the occasion….
Since Arizona put in a humidor this year, would it be possible to look at all the numbers minus home games at Chase Field for each year? This might show if the change from one extreme to another at this park has an affect on the overall league numbers.
So the increased “drag” or unexplained distance loss at Chase Field looks to be about 8 ft. over last year. For all stadiums it is an unexplained loss of 5 ft – so a little different but all stadiums but one are down over last year. Balls at all stadiums are now stored 70 deg / 50% humidity so that is likely part of it. More below if interested…..
At first I thought this was asking, “Is Baseball Dead?” and I thought, “No, the DH isn’t in the NL yet.”

Yes, because the survival of baseball lies in fans being able to watch pitchers hit .100. Without that amazing display of skill, baseball is truly pointless.
What about guys like Jacoby Jones, who has a career OPS+ of 59, dWAR of 2.5 and Rdrs of 22 in three seasons. Guy can’t hit a lick, but it sure is fun to watch him play the OF. When can we DH for him?!
Wouldn’t that make baseball more entertaining? To allow elite defensive players (like Billy Hamilton) play the field and elite hitters (like David Ortiz) take their turn at the plate so we don’t have to subject ourselves to ANY of their deficiencies as players? I’m sure the MLBPA would approve that by an overwhelming majority also. More jobs all around!

Are downvotes because you disagree with the argument that DH’ing for Billy Hamilton would make baseball more entertaining? Or because you don’t like your own argument being used against you? Or any arguments that are anti-DH at all?
I totally get that there is a HUGE discrepancy between the deficiencies of even a Billy Hamilton and your average pitcher, but you can see how the same argument could apply to other, more defensively focused positions. What if the Yankees could start Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez every day? Certainly makes for “more entertaining” baseball.
My stance in general is anti-DH, and I’ve lived my entire life with it existing in the AL (I’m 27). Maybe if they hadn’t instituted in the AL in 1973 then pitchers wouldn’t go 6+ years without swinging a bat. Maybe they’d be able to run the bases like professional athletes rather than oafs.
I see some need to have uniformity in the rules between leagues now that interleague is occurring so frequently, although I think this need is often overstated. I’d rather reduce or eliminate that (for more reasons than this) rather than create a new rule to accommodate it.
And I’d rather players be developed with more universal skills over the mass-specialization that we see in today’s baseball. Otherwise what’s to stop the game from turning into football? I’ve got my nine hitters, my nine fielders, and never the ‘tween shall meet.

Also you come across as extremely anti-players, which is weird for someone trying to make a purist argument. You seem to think the MLBPA is some evil organization, whereas the owners are the true guardians of the holy game of baseball. This is weird since the players are the game, and the MLBPA is the organization that makes sure the players get to make money too instead of just the owners… If anything, it’s the owners and the commissioner’s office that want to drive profits by pumping the players full of ‘roids and so forth. The MLBPA doesn’t want more jobs…it wants its current members to be paid more for doing their jobs.
Also the reason pitchers run the bases like oafs is because they don’t want to get hurt doing something other than their real job, which is pitching. Why are you hating on pitchers? Like, they have a hard and dangerous job entertaining us. We should appreciate it.

I recently looked into this as well and found the drag or unexplained distance difference has declined more than it ever increased from 2015 to 2017. I’m sure the new requirement for storing the balls at the parks at controlled temp and humidity is a factor but the difference is really extreme – especially looking at the breakdown by stadium. Makes no sense at all. If in fact all teams suddenly started storing baseballs at 50% humidity, that would likely be lower humidity than ambient at most parks — i.e., it should result in firmer baseballs and more HR. In either case, a drier/soggier ball should directly affect EV, not distance for a fixed EV.
There is no published, plausible explanation for the decreased carry distance in 2018. It’s clearly a reality, but we have yet to determine why.
Good point. I didn’t realize humidity works on drag in a counter-intuitive fashion. Its very strange since the storage policy was in response to the “problem”. Looks to be a continuing mystery – we know drag went down and then back up but it’s far from clear as to the reason why for both. Maybe the teams were “cooking” the balls before?

Besides the ball, what else could have changed this year that xwOBA is not capturing? Like increased shifting?
So how is it we are in the midst of a short slugger renaissance? You know, Betts, Ramirez, Albies…all 5’8, 5’9. My height, and I consider myself short. I never considered myself the size of a slugger, like Judge, Stanton, Trout, JDM, etc. Next year Altuve will hit 50 HRs and I guess no one will bat an eye. I’m the only one apparently who finds this suspicious.
I’d love to see a Fangraphs historical piece on short (5’9″ or less), bona fide sluggers (38+ HRs). I’m guessing we are witnessing a virtual singularity, especially in the face of the slugging downturn covered in this article. I’d be happy to be found wrong; I’d just like to know where today’s short sluggers stand in history, individually and as a group. If I’m not wrong, I’d like to see people wriggle around the answer as to how this could suddenly be. I think that could be really amusing.
In the exercise I looked at for the ball, the model is based on extra distance from spin. What is really interesting is that when you look at the spin quartiles, the smallest players are not only using the most spin but they are actually hitting the ball further than the larger players. Check out the data – It’s pretty surprising.

The list of players 5’9″ or shorter to hit 40 HR is quite small: Hack Wilson, Mel Ott, and Roy Campanella. If you expand to 30 HR seasons you add Mookie Betts, Jimmy Rollins, Kirby Puckett and Yogi Berra to the list.
So quite interesting to see players of this size all slugging like this.

Could this have anything to do – at least early in the season – on the abnormal-feeling amount of wet/soggy days? For instance, in Philadelphia, this June was a full three degrees cooler than last June. April was 9 degrees cooler this year too.
May was hotter though, FWIW.
This is what happens when there’s a total lack of transparency, and denials that anything was done to the ball in the face of overwhelming evidence, out of the commissioner’s office.
Odds are, they manipulated the ball for the AS game as well. Which would be fine, it’s an exhibition game, but you gotta come out and admit it. If you don’t, people are gonna start speculating. What happens, for instance, if someone points out that, for all we know, the League could be changing the balls around from series to series, and favoring some teams over others?
Could we take their denials any more seriously than the obvious lie about not having messed with the 2016-17 balls, to generate more homers?

Prepare for ball change #3 in the second half. I would expect the HR per EV bucket to suddenly normalize. I’m still waiting for a pitcher to sue MLB for future earnings on the basis of a secretly changing baseball.
