Jackie Bradley Jr. and the Error Rule
In this week’s typically fantastic Sunday Notes column (if you don’t read them, you should), David Laurila passed along this tidbit which caught my eye:
Red Sox centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was charged with an error on Friday night when he failed a handle a ball that, per StatCast, had a 6% catch probability. Bradley ran 60 feet in 4.2 seconds before having the ball carom off his glove.
That was backed up by David Adler.

Here’s the play in question:
Well, that doesn’t seem quite fair. But it’s becoming an increasing issue amongst official scorers and those who call for elimination of the error as a statistic altogether. Chris Hine, of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune wrote a great piece earlier this summer on different scorers’ approach to using Statcast: how much should Statcast data factor into the hit-vs.-error calculus? And do the Rules allow it?
Let’s start with the rule itself. Errors are governed by Rule 9.12 and its associated comments. The rule itself is almost five pages long in the official Rulebook and way too long to reproduce here. Further, the official definition of an error is no help at all: “An error is a statistic charged against a fielder whose action has assisted the team on offense, as set forth in this Rule 9.12.” Many have pointed to this language in the Comment to Rule 9.12(a)(1): “If a ground ball goes through a fielder’s legs or a fly ball falls untouched and, in the scorer’s judgment, the fielder could have handled the ball with ordinary effort, the official scorer shall charge such fielder with an error.” The Rulebook defines “Ordinary Effort” this way:
ORDINARY EFFORT is the effort that a fielder of average skill at a position in that league or classification of leagues should exhibit on a play, with due consideration given to the condition of the field and weather conditions.
The comments to this definition note that it’s an objective standard, not a subjective one.
[Ordinary Effort] is an objective standard in regard to any particular fielder. In other words, even if a fielder makes his best effort, if that effort falls short of what an average fielder at that position in that league would have made in a situation, the official scorer should charge that fielder with an error.
That means that effort should be measured relative to a reasonable player at that position, not to the player himself. Given this, it would seem that giving a fielder an error on a fly ball with a 6% catch probability is, in and of itself, erroneous. Statcast provides a reasonable, objective, fact-based criterion to apply to determine whether ordinary effort was supplied.
But part of the problem is that it’s not at all clear that an error is defined using the same standard as “ordinary effort.” Major League Baseball, on its own website, defines “error” this way:
A fielder is given an error if, in the judgment of the official scorer, he fails to convert an out on a play that an average fielder should have made.
This is the definition I’ve seen most cited on telecasts and broadcasts and at games. At first blush, that seems to be pretty close to the Rulebook definition. But there are some subtle differences. For example, it focuses on whether an out is made, rather than the effort exhibited; as a result, this definition is result-oriented rather than process-oriented. And something else from this definition merits some attention, as follows: “It simply penalizes a defender for not being able to make a routine play.” Well, that can’t be right. By definition, an average defender would make more than only routine plays. Statcast even has a metric, Outs Above Average, which uses catch probability to rank fielders. By that metric, Jake Cave has been an “average” fielder; his expected catch percentage (87%) and actual catch percentage (87%) are the same. Bradley, at nine outs above average, has converted more catch opportunities (90%) than expected (86%).
So let’s go back to the Rulebook definition. On the one hand, we have the objective standard created by “ordinary effort.” But in the comment, the language states that ordinary effort is in the judgment of the official scorer. And while perhaps those two standards could co-exist in the past, before advanced analytics and Statcast, that’s no longer the case. Why? Because Jackie Bradley Jr., by nearly converting an out on a fly ball with a 6% catch probability, delivered far more than “ordinary effort.” In other words, you can’t use the judgment of the official scorer to replace the fact-based metrics on which an objective standard relies.
The Comments to the Rule reinforce this disparity. Consider the comment on fly-ball errors:
The official scorer shall charge an outfielder with an error if such outfielder allows a fly ball to drop to the ground if, in the official scorer’s judgment, an outfielder at that position making ordinary effort would have caught such fly ball.
If the official scorer is supposed to be applying an objective standard, then it follows that they would benefit from referencing neutral, fact-based considerations (like Statcast) to determine what an average fielder is. But again, that’s not what the rule, which specifically says that it’s up to the official scorer, indicates. And, when viewed in that light, the meaning of the rule becomes clearer. “Ordinary effort” is theoretically an objective standard, yes. But at the same time, it seems as though MLB’s intent behind the rule was to make the official scorer the determinant of what “average fielding” is. It’s a standard which, again, might have made sense before the advent of Statcast. To describe a fly ball with a 6% catch probability as “ordinary,” however, is an exercise in absurdity.
Official scorers take a different view. Back in February, John Thorn, Official MLB Historian, passed along this explanation from official scorer Mark Jacobson:
Including these disparate plays distorts the scoring decision for the play at hand. Example (I’ve simplified Statcast for this, but just a bit): You see a fly ball. Statcast considers its opportunity time (available to a fielder running to make the catch) and the distance the fielder needs to cover to get to it…. If the Statcast database has 200 batted balls where the time and distance match yours — and 18 were caught — then the catch probability is 9% (18/200).
Now, you’re watching Billy Hamilton run down the fly ball. He reads it well, is amazingly fast, and gets there, well-positioned to make the catch — and clanks it. (When Statcast adds this to its database as #201, it’ll be a non-catch.) Now, you have to score it. You consider (at least)
- whether the fielder got to the ball (regardless of his speed, route, or judgment);
- whether he had a reasonable physical play on the ball when he got to it. (Was he well positioned? Was the ball too hot to handle? How about walls, sun, wind, etc.?)
While logical, the problem with the criteria being employed here is that it represents a subjective standard, not the objective standard required by the Rulebook. To show why, let’s consider the analogy that Jacobson does. If Billy Hamilton runs all-out and is well positioned to make a catch, the effort he took getting there will be a factor in his inability to catch the ball. A Billy Hamilton winded from running 30 yards at maximum speed will be less able to catch a fly ball as a result of the physical exertion involved in putting himself in that position — effort most center fielders couldn’t rival. And catch probability recognizes that. This isn’t to say that catch probability should be the arbiter of whether a fly ball is a hit or error. But it is to say that the fielder’s ability to place himself in a position to make a catch is relevant to making such a determination.
To be fair, defensive metrics have long been viewed — by authors at this site even — with some skepticism, much of it warranted. But it’s entirely unfair to say that defensive metrics have no use whatsoever. And using a person’s judgment to the exclusion of defensive metrics and Statcast data is more flawed than a scoring system based on data. But there’s an easy fix here — simply amend the comment to Rule 9.12 to say this:
ORDINARY EFFORT is the effort that a fielder of average skill at a position in that league or classification of leagues should exhibit on a play, with due consideration given to the condition of the field and weather conditions, as well as available data on comparable plays made under similar conditions.

I think you need to pull an Antonin Scalia and see if the definition of “routine” has changed in the last 140 years.
Errors only account for your positioning right as the ball gets to you. Fielding errors are about how soft your hands are(n’t) and throwing errors are about accuracy (not mentioned in the article is that a weak throwing player is never given an error simply because he doesn’t have the arm to make a play that an average player would).
Also, the MLB definition of an error that says that it is when a fielder fails to make an out he should have seems to ignore errors on base hits that allow the player to advance further.
The real point of this should not be “how do we fix the error statistic?” but rather simply a further understanding that errors are not that great of a statistic for defining defensive excellence.
The error is sometimes useful for explaining what happened in a play, though, which is the original function of baseball statistics (as any avid scorekeeper can tell you). An error often describes something that happened on a play that is difficult to categorize otherwise. This is one reason why the analysis in this article is useful…JBJ shouldn’t be penalized for failing to field that ball, and neither should the batter for hitting it there. What happened in that play was a line-drive double to deep right center that a fielder somehow got a glove on.
What about UZR/DRS? I believe they currently include errors as a rate component. Shouldn’t this component be removed and replaced with something derived from Statcast?
Errors are the worst. Biggest pet peeve on errors is when a batter hits a lazy pop fly that should have like a 99% catch probability, the fielder loses it in the sun, it drops, and…the batter gets a hit out of it because the fielder didn’t actually lay a glove on it. Part of fielding is not losing track of the freaking ball.
Yes, the current notion of “if the fielder doesn’t touch it means it’s not an error” is just dumb. Like in the Bradley case above, if he puts his glove up but the ball misses it, then there’s no way they would charge an error on the play.
Thankfully players aren’t really judged on errors anymore. Everyone still knows Simmons is the best defensive SS even though he doesn’t lead the league in errors.

That only applies to fly balls. If a ground ball goes through the fielder's legs without being touched, 100% of the time, it's ruled an error.
I like the analysis but disagree with the proposed solution. I think that the rule should be altered to take into account the varying abilities of individual players. My definition would look more like this:
“ORDINARY EFFORT is the effort that an average fielder at a position in that league or classification of leagues should exhibit on a play, with due consideration given to the condition of the field and weather conditions, as well as available data on comparable plays made under similar conditions.”
Baseball players even at the majors have vastly different abilities and one should not be precluded from the possibility of making an error just because one has significantly greater speed or rang than the “average” player. To paraphrase Justice Stewart I know an error when I see it and Jackie Bradley Jr. committed an error on that play. He didn’t make an extraordinary effort to get to the ball, at least for JB Jr., and relatively easily got his glove to the ball but appears to have closed his glove too early.
I think that instead focusing on the effort a specific player, given his physical abilities (i.e. sprint speed), is required to exert to make a particular play creates a fairer, and more objective error standard. Not to mention the fact that it conforms more with the traditional understanding of what an error is.
One thing that I do not think is considered in the article is the most basic, but perhaps the trickiest, matter: what is a play? If the play mentioned in the article is the entire play, no, it is not an error by the rulebook definition. However, if separated into components, it is. While most OF’s would not have gotten into the position to catch the ball that Bradley did, most OF’s would have caught a fly ball from a similar position. While this seems far-fetched, thing about the situation where an infielder makes a great diving play, then gets up (say it is a catcher running, and he has plenty of time) and air-mails the throw. That is an error even though most infielders never would have gotten the ball.
I think it would be a mistake to make the errors stat based on statcast, etc. We already have those types of defensive metrics. Errors measures something different—not nearly as useful—but different. It measures clunkers. Regardless of whether you did something brilliant to even have a chance to clunk it, it is an error when you clunk it. And Bradley, after a brilliant piece of fielding to get there, clunked it.
I guess the question becomes, what’s the point of the error? If you’re going to penalize someone for making a great play to get to a ball, but then not finishing the play, should it be an “error” when a fielder breaks in initially on a play, only to have the ball sail 10 feet over his head as he races back?
Maybe some new nomenclature is needed for an error that is only possible because of extraordinary effort and skill. I recommend calling it a ‘flerror’. Either one or two syllables is acceptable.
I’d love to see video footage of other similar plays to see how they came up with the 6% probability. I know Bradley is a great defensive CF, but I have a hard time believing that’s only caught about 1 out of 16 chances. It looks to me like he wasn’t going all out – he somewhat slowed down just before it hit his glove. Even if someone was a full step slower than him, they would be able to reach the ball without diving. Something just doesn’t seem right to me as I watch the video.
Also, Laurila posted that he went 60 feet in 4.2 seconds. The tweet mentioned 80 feet in 4.2 seconds. Anyone know which is correct?
Did you see the jump he got? I think he started moving before the ball hit the bat. Most players would lose a few tenths of a second on the jump and then the play would likely be out of reach.

Yes, I saw it in real time during the broadcast. I wasn’t implying that anyone else SHOULD have seen his jump, more that if you did it becomes understandable how this play is scored so remote.
The Error is a bad stat from an obsolete age. It’s not that we need to fix it, as much as we need to abandon it.
Errors benefit pitchers ERA. They stay.
Defensive metrics will gain a little believeability when the various conflicting systems don’t conflict as much. DRS and UZR almost seem to be looking at two different players in many of their assessments of the same player. Freddie Galvis appears to be one of the biggest discrepancies this year, but they can’t even agree on Nolan Arenado. As the former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said many years ago in response to a question about pornography, “I can’t define it but I will know it when I see it” and the same applies to defense. The trained eye doesn’t need a computer to tell that Andrelton Simmons has range, doesn’t need a computer to tell that Dustin Pedroia is the best ever at coming up with hard hit balls at his feet or when he dives for the ball and doesn’t need a computer to tell who is steady and who is flashy but erratic. I don’t care what the computers spit out, the eye test is still unsurpassed, and, yes, it took a while to actually accept that JBJ missed that catch.
If the eye test is so great, why do people still think Derek Jeter was a good fielding SS? I think it was Bill James who pointed out that, without stats, you couldn’t tell the difference between a .270 and a .300 hitter because the difference is only 1 hit every 2 weeks for a full time player. If just using the eye test, are you really going to notice that difference? If one SS makes a routine play on a ground ball while Jeter goes deep in the hole, backhands it and guns the batter out at first, the eye test says Jeter made a spectacular play. The stats say he turned a routine play into a spectacular one. The eye test is certainly a tool for analysis, but by itself is a poor evaluator of fielding ability.
If you look again, I did say the trained eye, not members of the BBWAA. Remember that this group awarded the Gold Glove to Rafael Palmiero one year when he played less than 30 games at first base. I am a strong believer in metrics on offense, my only complaint is that if defensive metrics are to be believed there should not be diametrically diverse conclusions being drawn from the same information by different systems analyzing that data.
Defense is a difficult thing to measure and each method goes about it in different ways. I’d be shocked if they all marched in lockstep on every player. Unfortunately, you need to understand how each is calculated and the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each calculation. This allows an understanding of what types of defenders are overrated/underrated by each system. You talk about the eye test being used by the “trained eye”. Reading defensive statistics (at least the meaningful ones) takes a trained eye as well. I’d rather have the largely untrained schmo’s at the BBWAA using (insert advanced defensive stat here) for gold glove voting than their eyes though. If you’re not trained at either, stats are better.
And most of the trained eyes are working for teams; and most of those teams are also using advanced stats. For example, JBJ isn’t super highly ranked in Flg% or RF/9 in the AL. Yet, he’s still playing regularly despite being terrible at the plate. Clearly the Redsox have advanced stats telling them that his defense (and baserunning) is worth the hit in the batters box. And in fact, both BBRef and Fangraphs rate him as an average to slightly above average player overall; ie including the bad hitting. Now, JBJ certainly passes the eye test as well, but I guarantee Alex Cora has experts in both areas and is listening to both. And I don’t think that’s just the Redsox approaching it that way. A lot has changed in front offices in the 15 years since Moneyball.
Dombrowski isn’t using advanced stats for defense, he relies on reputation. He’s one of the most regressive GMs in the game, the BoSox have taken several steps towards dumbing things down since Theo.
Predictive models ought to be assessed by their statistic integrity, adjusted r-squared, p-values and the like.
Not whether rival metrics agree with each other.

I think the solution here is to define the rule such that an error mostly ignores the fielder’s range and focuses on what he does when he is positioned to make the play. This is just formalizing the flaw in the statistic. I see it no differently than a hit. You can hit the ball badly, Statcast will say you had almost no chance to get a hit on a ball hit that way, but you lucked out and it’s a hit. It’s just a flaw of the statistic. With errors, it should be about what you do when the ball gets close to you. Leave it to the other metrics to measure range.
And I’ll add that accepting range as a valid consideration for errors would also require accepting arm strength as a valid consideration. Could you imagine a weak-armed SS getting an error because the runner barely beat his throw? We’d know the SS’s arm is at fault, but it’s not an *error*.
But what about the hitter? If he hit the ball in a way that usually produces a double, and he ends up on second base, seems weird to say that he didn’t hit a double but actually F8 with a two base E8.
Jake Marisnick made an incredible diving catch in the game where he later left with an injury and I think Statcast said it was 38% catchable. NO WAY!

Given this interpretation the “error” is still deeply flawed and, arguably (i.e. probably) not worthy of our attention, but is, regardless, more or less in keeping with the probable intent of the “error” statistic.

I saw the game and had no clue it was a 6% catch. I’d like to see a compilation of errors on 20% catches at the seasons end. That would be entertaining and educational.
The dumbest use of errors is when they are assinged because they “must” be assigned, as when a base runner scores because a right fielder makes a great 250′ throw to third which bounces off his back. There is no reason in such cases not to replace E-9 with SH-9, or plain SH.
That was an error. He should have caught the ball. Let’s not turn this into the football rules of what a catch is etc. He got a great jump (as he usually does) then flubbed the catch.
Wow, that ball had a 6% chance of being caught? He gets there and has to slow down a bit. It really looks like he SHOULD have caught it easily. I’m impressed he made it look so easy to get there.

Someone needs to explain to MLB what the word “objective” means. The Ordinary Effort part of the rule is clearly a subjective decision. Now they’ve given some good guidelines by which to assist the scorer in making his subjective decision. But the objective fact is that an “average” centerfielder making the same play with “ordinary effort” is an entirely theoretical scenario being played out in the official scorer’s head (as well as any of us watching the game). What Jackie Bradley did on the play is an objective fact; what the theoretical “average” player would have done in an alternate universe is the official scorer’s opinion.
I don’t want to wear out my welcome around here with the philosophy mumbo jumbo, but MLB is right that this is an objective standard. Whether or not a play meets this standard can only be evaluated subjectively, but the standard itself is objective. At least it is if you think that there is a spectrum of fielding ability in relation to any given baseball play. If fielding ability can be arranged on a spectrum, then there is an average point, even if it can’t be known objectively but only approximated using subjective judgment.
Is the average centerfielder measurable and observable? I would argue that such a player is theoretical to begin with and is therefore not measurable and observable. Putting constraints around a subjective judgement does not change it to objective.
“Measurable and observable” is the definition of empirical, not objective.
The problem here isn’t so much with “error” as with “catch probability,” specifically, with treating it as a single, unchanging number. By the time JBJ was two strides away from the clunk, the catch probability certainly was a lot higher than 6%, because his speed, plus a good read, had done all the hard part of making the catch. He then muffed the “easy” (for a MLB oufielder, anyway) part. I have no informed opinion on whether the result “should” have been scored an error. But treating catch probability as a dynamic, rather than static, thing, one that evolves during the play, would improve it, as all modern analytics are susceptible to being improved (and indeed are being improved).
Someone quick! Pull up a correlation between errors and defensive ratings of other kinds. Is there a correlation at all? Is it negative?
Now that would be interesting. My hypothesis is that its relatively low, but positive.
Fine I did it myself. Prepare to have your mind blown. I did it just for 2018, on a team basis. The overall correlation of errors to DRS is -0.18. Using UZR, -0.31. Using FG Def, -0.36. That means the better fielding players/teams have more errors!
That makes sense. In 1984, the statue like Steve Garvey had 0 errors and a negative dwar (Keith Hernandez got the GG that year, with 8 errors)
Of all the examples that is a clear error, he was even jogging and he could have gone two hands but was casual about it, that is a clear error. I do agree some areas are grey, Matt Chapman was charged with a fielding error when deflecting a 100mph + liner on a full dive allowing a hitter to reach. It was probably an impossible or improbable rating on fangraphs inside edge but he was charged with the error despite no human other than him getting close to it.
errors are judged on objectivity, in that instance bradley jnr should have caught it, and no person is going to sit here and objectively say that a casual malaise to the all going one handed like a rockstar should not have been an out. E8 move on.
The errors that are not charged when two defenders are going towards a fly ball and both just let it drop between them because they each thought the other was going to get it, those need to be errors. Make it a Team error, but that should not go against the pitcher.
