Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 10/8/13
9:01 |
: Wow, a live chat! Can’t remember the last time I did one of these!
|
9:01 |
: In today’s live chat, we’ll just re-live yesterday’s five-hour Red Sox/Rays marathon. We begin in the top of the first…
|
9:02 |
You’re late, Mr. Spicoli, stop wasting MY time! |
9:02 |
: One a god damned minute!
|
9:03 |
: Typos!
|
9:03 |
to whom do i register my disappointment in the lack of articles about pitcher pace in yesterday’s sox/rays game? |
9:03 |
: Nothing new to say, really, and there were far more important and compelling things to write about, like Jose Lobaton going deep, and the Quintin Berry “steal” of second (which I think Dave will be writing about a little later)
|
9:04 |
Why Hellickson, does Maddon next read your’s and Dave’s deep thoughts!? |
9:04 |
: I haven’t quite figured this one out, between Hellickson and Archer, but my assumption is that Maddon has a good reason and I just haven’t tried hard enough to try to track it down. Crowdsource!
|
9:05 |
You Again!!? |
9:05 |
: I live in here. It’s just sometimes I close the doors.
|
9:05 |
Approximately how much less time will tonight’s game take? |
9:05 |
: 45 minutes
|
9:05 |
Dave loves the ‘bullpen game’ in elimination games but would you do it with detroits bullpen? |
9:06 |
: I wouldn’t do it with Detroit’s bullpen or Detroit’s rotation. I’d be a little more aggressive with the relievers, perhaps, but I wouldn’t be in a hurry to yank any of those starting arms
|
9:06 |
Someone should help Dave with his wardrobe.. he must be colorblind.. The Rays are not going away without a fight. Does this series go five? |
9:06 |
: I think it ends tonight, although I think it’s closer than people expect it to be. I don’t know which is the latest Dave TV appearance but sometimes they send him clothes to put on.
|
9:06 |
As a Red Sox fan I have the impression that Hellickson destroys the Sox, though the stats show he’s mediocre against them in his career. But then again, what do the stats know? Nerds. |
9:07 |
: Is this about a changeup? Is Maddon going to piggyback both of the guys?
|
9:07 |
Fredi has to bring in Kimbrel after Puig’s double, right? Let Medlen close 9th if need be with Minor game 5. |
9:08 |
: Kimbrel can handle six outs. Gonzalez had him lined up for four, but between four and six there’s very little difference. There was a little talk on Twitter about this after the game — Glen Perkins agreed that Kimbrel should’ve thrown both innings, and that the big issue is getting up and down between innings. So, six outs max, not four
|
9:08 |
: For the record, David Carpenter was a really good reliever this year. He should’ve been able to get through that eighth. But he’s no Kimbrel, because basically no one is
|
9:09 |
So I’m guessing Chris Archer is unavailable to pitch today, after all his warm-ups yesterday? |
9:09 |
: I should certainly hope not, but yeah, that’s quietly taxing
|
9:09 |
Why am I not particularly bothered by Loney/Zobrist-style obstruction on pickoff/CS throws (to the point of feeling, in my gut, that obstruction would have been the wrong call), whereas I think obstruction on plays at the plate is an anathema? Am I a hypocrite? |
9:10 |
: There are injuries on plays at the plate, so maybe you’re just being a good human. But yeah, this is something that ought to be talked about. That’s two times in a few days we’ve seen a possible obstruction call, and even if by the letter of the law the plays were all right, maybe they shouldn’t be? Worthwhile discussion
|
9:10 |
Rally towels or Pom-poms? |
9:10 |
: Towels
|
9:10 |
: Look better at the time, have more uses later
|
9:11 |
Will we ever see a triumphant return from Johan Santana? |
9:11 |
: He’ll get another win
|
9:11 |
I hate (respectfully!) Pedro Alvarez and think the Cards are fools for throwing him any fastballs at all, but how impressive is it to take the ONE pitch you can obliterate and obliterate it? |
9:12 |
: Well, if there’s one pitch you can obliterate as a hitter, you better be damned sure you’re getting that pitch when it’s thrown to you. You have to seize your opportunities
|
9:12 |
If you were the GM for a CF needy team and Carlos Gomez had not signed his extension prior to the season (Qualifications!) would you target him or Jacoby Ellsbury? |
9:14 |
: Both, with Gomez getting slight priority. Younger, not markedly worse as a hitter
|
9:14 |
A’s have to win tonight to win the series? |
9:14 |
: Of course not. The Braves were a managerial decision away from beating Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers with Freddy Garcia
|
9:14 |
: They lost the first game by a run
|
9:14 |
How about Freddy Garcia though? |
9:15 |
: So much to be learned from Garcia vs. Kershaw, so much of it will be forgotten
|
9:15 |
: The next time there’s such a matchup, there’s going to be the same degree of panic. People don’t appreciate how f***in random baseball can be sometimes
|
9:15 |
Cowbell or more Cowbell? |
9:15 |
: I like that the Rays have a thing, at least. It beats Rob Szasz
|
9:16 |
If Joe Maddon doesn’t get rid of the DH to prove he’s smarter than everybody else, does Lobaton homer? |
9:16 |
: Lobaton wouldn’t have been hitting in that spot. Would’ve been Fuld or Young or whoever
|
9:16 |
I’ve come to accept that managers will never change, so when will managing change? When will front offices begin making strategic competence the main priority? |
9:17 |
: When there are actual managers out there who are strategically competent. They’re few and far between, and it isn’t a manager’s most important job anyway. The key is probably open-mindedness, so you can hire a guy and then work with him, like how the Pirates have gotten Clint Hurdle to embrace defensive shifting based on Dan Fox’s data and whatnot. Hurdle is an old-school guy, but he’s learned a new trick
|
9:18 |
Early pick for NL east in 14: Braves or Nats? |
9:18 |
: Braves by a game or two
|
9:18 |
Without looking- can you name what new division all NHL teams are in? |
9:18 |
: Absolutely can’t! I know Ottawa, and that’s what I know
|
9:19 |
: My approach to hockey is completely different from my approach to baseball
|
9:19 |
Should I go to University of Chicago’s law school on a great scholarship or go to Stanford’s law school on a decent scholarship? Also, should I go to law school at all? |
9:19 |
: no
|
9:19 |
Will Peavy swear on the mound more or less than Grant Balfour? |
9:19 |
: More in total, less per inning
|
9:19 |
Bringing in Martinez instead of Rosenthal in the eighth? How does an organziation that seems to everything else right end up with a manager that continues to make questionable postseasons decisions? |
9:21 |
: That’s a case of the Fredi Gonzalez move not completely backfiring. Similar move, though. Trust the ace reliever. He’s the ace reliever
|
9:22 |
: just last NLCS, Rosenthal made consecutive two-inning appearances, generating eight total strikeouts
|
9:22 |
T/F: A’s have the most fun fanbase in baseball? |
9:23 |
: They seem to have the most fun environment, but when I mentioned that on Twitter the other day I got a lot of anger from people who thought they’re just all a bunch of terrible drunks, so, opinions sure provoke opinions
|
9:23 |
: The A’s are not lacking for home-crowd enthusiasm, which is a thing you can’t say about everybody
|
9:23 |
What on earth are the White Sox trying to accomplish by going after Granderson with the team they currently have? |
9:25 |
: Local ties, and they might think they’d be able to get him at something of a discount coming off that season he just had. They’re not *that* far from contention, in that few bad teams are. But I think they end up comfortably outbid by somebody better
|
9:25 |
Did you watch Breaking Bad? I haven’t watched the series yet, but the hype is making it harder not to. |
9:25 |
: Genuine non-hyperbole: it might be television’s greatest accomplishment
|
9:25 |
: Genuine non-hyperbole: I don’t know very much about the history of television
|
9:26 |
: How you feel about Breaking Bad is how I feel about The Wire, but I’m still giving that another few years for people to completely stop talking about it
|
9:26 |
Brian McCann is ringing your doorbell with a 6 pack of light beer in the crook of his arm. Do you: A) Taze him B) Pour boiling oil on him C) Throw your cats at him D) Suffer through the next 4 hours as he whines on your couch |
9:26 |
: I would invite him in because it seems like in that situation Brian McCann is just looking for a friend when he’s in a dark place
|
9:27 |
: But I don’t have a doorbell, a taser, oil to boil, or cats
|
9:27 |
Did Juan Uribe really have a 5 WAR season? |
9:27 |
: #weirdbaseball
|
9:27 |
Do you think the Braves start quietly looking for a new manager in years to come? Freddi really looked bad this series….. |
9:28 |
: Contract year, right? It probably won’t be that quiet
|
9:28 |
As a Red Sox fan, the Carl Crawford signing ruined signing aging speedsters for me, but I always hear that those players age better than power bats. So that being said, should I not be bitter if the Sox re-sign Ellsbury? |
9:28 |
: If the Red Sox re-sign Ellsbury they’ll be re-signing a really good player still around the peak of his career, and those rules about player types are greatly overstated
|
9:28 |
Fun fact: Juan Uribe slugged over .500 in 2004 |
9:29 |
: and then he hit even more home runs with the Giants in 2010
|
9:30 |
: The most mind-blowing thing is probably Juan Uribe being a good defender
|
9:30 |
: It’s like observing Prince Fielder’s agility. How?!
|
9:30 |
Which Fat Juan is fatter? Francisco or Uribe? |
9:30 |
: I misread this question when I accepted it from the queue. So I’ll say they’re both healthy athletes
|
9:31 |
Alverez crushing what he must, Lobaton hitting nastiness…the margin of error to play at that level is crazy, and I think it is healthy to just be in awe more often and enjoy the show. |
9:32 |
: I think it’s more fun and a lot healthier to enjoy the ability rather than criticize the players or managerial decisions. There’s a place for negativity, sure, and sometimes it’s fine to indulge, but at the end of the day sometimes Jose Lobaton knocks out one of baseball’s very best pitches and what are we supposed to do with that but appreciate the spectacle?
|
9:32 |
: People argue against the Wild Card playoff because they don’t like a season coming down to one game, they think it’s too random. October is awesome because of the randomness. Those are the lasting memories. Tony Womack vs. Mariano Rivera, and so on
|
9:33 |
Best 3 Simpsons episodes, go! |
9:33 |
: I don’t do favorites. They were all special snowflakes
|
9:33 |
: until about 15 years ago
|
9:33 |
I’m going with Pittsburgh for the most fun fanbase. I haven’t been to Oakland though, so…. |
9:34 |
: Pittsburgh has definitely had an awesome postseason crowd, but Oakland’s been like this year after year in October and you get the sense in Oakland it’s really about devotion, and not so much about just being a part of the scene. Because, you know, the stadium experience itself sucks
|
9:34 |
: I don’t know. Pittsburgh has flags. I love that Pittsburgh has flags. It’s incredible to watch
|
9:35 |
DO you think it’s possible that a team’s fanbase can just get “bored”? For example, the Cardinals fans have been relatively quiet so far, and the Yankees fans didn’t even sell out an ALCS game last year. While it seems like newer postseason teams like Oakland, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore have the loudest fans. |
9:35 |
: Yeah, absolutely. A big part of the noise is appreciation of the circumstances, and it’s hard to appreciate what you’re accustomed to
|
9:37 |
: Additionally, when you have a stadium that’s routinely at or near capacity, it’s going to behave a certain usual way. When you have a stadium that suddenly starts approaching capacity, there are all those extra filled seats that have a chance to change the environment. There won’t be a “routine” for that kind of crowd, so it should be easier to alter the atmosphere
|
9:37 |
: So a place like Oakland will respond to a sellout differently than a place like St Louis, that’s usually sold out or close to it
|
9:38 |
Which nerd will trade for David Price? |
9:38 |
: feel like Rangers or Cubs
|
9:38 |
: some people the other day also speculated about the Diamondbacks?
|
9:38 |
Remember when Zito won game 1 against Verlander last year? |
9:39 |
: and had an RBI single
|
9:39 |
also, whose division rivals will McCann be yelling at come April? |
9:39 |
: based on some chatter yesterday we came up with the Rangers, Red Sox or Yankees
|
9:40 |
: Opportunity here for the Yankees to make up for the Russell Martin mistake
|
9:40 |
Why has Brian McCann suddenly have a worse reputation than Milton Bradley, ARod, Bonds, and Elijah Dukes all rolled into one super douchebag? I get it, he was a dick towards the end of this season, but damn talk about knee-jerk reactions. |
9:40 |
: Yeah, so, that’s an exaggeration. People are just having fun with a new thing
|
9:40 |
: It’ll die down within a matter of weeks
|
9:40 |
But with the fragility of defensive statistics, how can we actually know that Juan Uribe was a good defensive player? |
9:41 |
: Because he’s always been a pretty good defensive player, and people overstate the issues with defensive metrics. Obviously, they’re not perfect, but there’s a lot of territory between perfect and worthless
|
9:41 |
CC Sabathia is a very good athlete. And David Ortiz sprinted last night, much faster than I’d expect |
9:42 |
: These people are barely even human
|
9:42 |
: Jose Lobaton? I bet if you saw him in person, on the street, you’d think to yourself, “damn”
|
9:42 |
: Or, you know, not. Hell if I know, I don’t see him around in Portland
|
9:42 |
The Mariners are the only current team to never play in the World Series. Will this ever fucking change? Maybe we just need a manager with thick rimmed glasses. Thanks Jeff |
9:43 |
: You’re forgetting the Nationals/Expos
|
9:43 |
: The Mariners will be good eventually, and Safeco will have an atmosphere again, eventually
|
9:43 |
To get to this level you have to be an incredible natural athlete, even if you’re really fat. |
9:44 |
: For the most part, yeah. There are some extra pounds lying around, but beneath those pounds are incredible muscles and conditioning
|
9:44 |
Are you surprised the pirates are going with Cole over Burnett? Is it really because of one bad start? |
9:45 |
: For me, it’s a coin flip — Cole’s been about as good as Burnett for a while, and Burnett just had a bad game while Cole just had a good game. I haven’t looked at the numbers but it’s possible Cole is a slightly better matchup. Cynically, it looks like Hurdle just wants to not have to answer questions if Burnett were to struggle again, but there’s a good argument in favor of this decision. It’s not as obvious as some people might think, but it’s also not bad. Cole’s pretty great
|
9:45 |
I saw a game in Oakland, their fans are pretty fun. |
9:45 |
How did you watch a game when you were covering the Mariners for LOL? Were there a series of specific things that you keep track of? How were you able to do that AND enjoy the game? I find that I have trouble doing both. |
9:46 |
: Well thankfully with the Mariners I never had to worry about whether or not I would enjoy the game
|
9:47 |
: I always kept a physical or electronic notepad nearby to jot things down I could re-visit later on. It was tricky sometimes to balance observation and enjoyment, but I had a great time with the no-hitter and the Felix perfect game, and those were basically the only two moments ever, so it could’ve been worse
|
9:47 |
Your thoughts on Epstein’s moves with the Cubs? Do you think they can contend within two-four years or so? |
9:47 |
: I like what he’s done, I like what he’s doing, and they should contend in 2015
|
9:47 |
: It’ll be interesting to see how high they go bidding for Girardi, but it’s not like I can give that any analysis
|
9:48 |
Regarding Dan Uggle, has any team that won their division ever left their highest paid player off the roster? |
9:49 |
: 2010 Giants left off Barry Zito
|
9:49 |
: They also might as well have left off Aaron Rowand, but, anyway
|
9:50 |
The Cardinals fans did do a fair number of Pittsburgh-style “AAAAAAJJJJJJ AAAAAAAAJJJJJJJJJ” chants at the beginning of game one, but yeah, generally a fairly reserved volume fanbase relative to some of the newer playoff teams. |
9:50 |
: Still capable of losing their minds, like in the recent World Series
|
9:51 |
: I really wonder to what extent the Pittsburgh one-game playoff crowd influenced other crowds around baseball. “Hey, this can be fun out here”
|
9:51 |
Cards fans would probably be better if we didn’t keep getting the afternoon games. |
9:51 |
: Pittsburgh doesn’t mind
|
9:51 |
So are the Braves happy with their decision to have Elliot Johnson on the postseason roster over Dan Uggla? |
9:52 |
: Well, no, probably not, but I don’t think the Braves are happy about much right now
|
9:52 |
if the replay/challenge system were in place this postseason, how different are the games we’ve seen so far? Lots of challengable plays that could have been overturned, but not sure that any of them win or lose a game for a team. |
9:53 |
: Unfortunately I haven’t kept close track, but I imagine the biggest play was the Berry stolen base last night. Rays’ win expectancy dropped to 36%, where it would’ve been 54% had Berry been called out. But Berry ultimately didn’t score and the Rays won, so, yeah
|
9:53 |
: I don’t think things would look meaningfully different, but that doesn’t mean the system shouldn’t be in place five years ago
|
9:54 |
Note sure if Price gritty enough for AZ |
9:54 |
: seems to have the right opinion of nerds
|
9:54 |
Any match between the Cardinals and either Drew or Ellsbury? Lot of money coming off the books in St. Louis and SS/CF are areas where improvement is possible |
9:54 |
: Drew would make sense, Ellsbury probably wouldn’t.
|
9:55 |
: Jay seems like a straight up league-average player or so, and the Cardinals aren’t going to pursue Ellsbury to the level at which he’s going to sign
|
9:56 |
: Taveras might still be able to handle CF, and then there’s some Craig/Adams flexibility
|
9:57 |
Top 3 parks you would like to attend a postseason game at? |
9:57 |
: Oakland, Pittsburgh, Seattle
|
9:57 |
Just wait till the Jays make the playoffs and there are 50,000 people yelling…inside. |
9:57 |
: Tampa Bay is also inside
|
9:58 |
How about TBS refusing to acknowledge that Wacha was throwing curveballs last night? Pretty entertaining and interesting to see him bust out a pitch he barely used during the regular season. |
9:58 |
: 14 curves yesterday. Previous season high: 9
|
9:59 |
: hadn’t thrown more than 7 since August 10
|
9:59 |
: got him nine strikes, three whiffs…
|
9:59 |
: Seems like it improved his fastball
|
9:59 |
“The Wire” has much more of a cult following rather than a pop culture following, but the writing and intricate story arcs are positively unmatched in TV history. Re-watched entire series last year and was blown away with how personal and simplistic David Simon was able to make the drug business on all levels. |
10:00 |
: I am very much looking forward to this. It seems like the Internet has finally stopped telling me to watch it, so it might be about time to start watching it
|
10:00 |
: But then I also try not to interact with much of the Internet so I don’t know what it’s actually thinking
|
10:00 |
If you could make one super pitcher using 4 other pitcher’s pitches, what would they be? (For example; Cole Hamels’ changeup) |
10:00 |
: All right, let’s see
|
10:01 |
: I’ll stick with starting pitchers
|
10:01 |
: Off the top of my head:
|
10:01 |
: Matt Harvey’s fastball
|
10:02 |
: Stephen Strasburg’s changeup
|
10:02 |
: Adam Wainwright’s curveball
|
10:03 |
: Patrick Corbin’s slider
|
10:03 |
: Lots of other pitches in the argument — Felix’s changeup, Darvish’s everything, Kershaw’s curve, Parker’s change — and I don’t know how these would all work together, but holy crap
|
10:03 |
Average lifetime for a MLB stadium is around 30 years. Think Safeco will see a WS game? |
10:04 |
: Yeah, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. It holds up really well
|
10:04 |
: It’s still maybe baseball’s second- or third-best stadium
|
10:04 |
What percentage of managerial decisions are based on hedging bets and saving ones own ass? |
10:04 |
: I think they’re almost never just about that, but I think they’re very frequently in part about that
|
10:04 |
What do the Braves do with Dan Uggla? Highest paid player on the team the next two years. |
10:05 |
: Try to “push” him next spring with competition. Hope for a rebound. Can’t speak to 2015; will depend entirely on 2014
|
10:05 |
The article about what made the Pirates a playoff team mentioned believing in advanced metrics and bouncebacks. Makes me think that Josh Johnson is basically a shoe in for the Buccos if AJ Burnett retires. Obviously not a shoe in. But you know what I mean. Wouldnt he be the typical Pirate pickup given their recent trend? |
10:07 |
: He’d definitely fit the pattern, and he’d definitely be a fun gamble
|
10:07 |
: But maybe the way the gamble would work out would not be fun
|
10:07 |
: like so many gambles 🙁
|
10:07 |
I like you better than Dave if for no other reason than you say “anyway” and he says “anyways.” |
10:08 |
: how obnoxious!
|
10:08 |
: I’m terrified people are going to suddenly notice my ticks and then it’ll be like the glass breaking like in that HIMYM episode
|
10:08 |
: not that people haven’t already observed my writerly habits
|
10:08 |
McCann is taking extra heat because he is the mascot/epitome of the Barves attitude/arrogance/fun police whatever they are |
10:09 |
: Chris Johnson has quietly avoided much in the way of criticism, but he’s been a big part of this as well
|
10:09 |
: what a curious clubhouse atmosphere
|
10:10 |
Forget the big names, who are the sleeper FAs this offseason? |
10:10 |
: Jose Molina!
|
10:10 |
: going over the list…
|
10:10 |
: Potential bouncebacks to be found in Gutierrez, Granderson, and Hart
|
10:11 |
: Going to be interesting to see how little teams still believe in Bartolo Colon
|
10:11 |
: and Scott Feldman is still a guy
|
10:12 |
: I could look at this more rigorously
|
10:12 |
Anchorman 2 is going to be awful |
10:12 |
: don’t see it
|
10:13 |
where does Tanaka land this offseason? (I know my team Toronto needs SP help) |
10:14 |
: Angels? Hard to say, and we’re waiting on pending word on posting-system changes. I think the Rangers end up with Abreu, which would presumably take them out of the Tanaka running
|
10:14 |
think the yankees let Cano walk, and overpay a little for infante? |
10:14 |
: no
|
10:14 |
There has been worlds of difference between the excitement level of the Pirates fans in the WC game and the NLDS. |
10:15 |
: Is that true? I think they’ve been a little quieter, but they also haven’t had a true elimination game in the NLDS, and the second/third playoff games in forever aren’t going to match up to the environment around the first
|
10:15 |
Are we going to see a beaning in the A’s game? |
10:15 |
: I think it’s all been handled
|
10:15 |
Wouldn’t the Cubs need to unload a ton of the talent they’ve accumulated to land Price? Not to mention the contract.. As a Cubs’ fan living in the Tampa area who watches Price pitch a lot I’d rather they go a different direction. |
10:17 |
: On the other hand, they could see Price as allowing them to maximize whatever talent they’d be giving up. He’s better than all of those guys individually, but yeah, it does seem less likely that they’d go for a two-year acquisition. He has the James Shields window, and the Cubs now are worse than the Royals a year ago
|
10:17 |
: Not that the Cubs would give up a Wil Myers
|
10:17 |
Man. The NL Central looks to be scary for a while. The Cards and Pirates are good now and look to stay good. The Cubs have some great days ahead in a year or two. The Reds might lose Choo, but should be great for a long time. Heck, even the Brewers have a decent core, but with not a lot of depth. |
10:17 |
: I think the Reds could be in some trouble soon, given that there’s not a lot coming through the pipeline
|
10:18 |
: But yeah, a terrible division is morphing into a really talented division, demonstrating the cyclical nature of it all
|
10:18 |
Going to see you tonight in the Redsox live blog? |
10:19 |
: Dave has very graciously given me a partial day off after yesterday’s workload, so I’ll be watching but not actively participating. There’ll be more Red Sox live blogs, though, and I will get stuck with at least one of them
|
10:19 |
: What a chore that team can be!
|
10:19 |
and dickey’s knuckler |
10:19 |
: totally should’ve included a knuckleball in the best-mutant-pitcher discussion
|
10:20 |
I want to learn about Patrick Corbin’s slider! |
10:20 |
: Threw 735 sliders this season, according to Brooks. .132 average. Less than 50% contact
|
10:21 |
What are the best stadiums in baseball? |
10:21 |
: I haven’t been to them all, but people frequently rank PNC at the top and Safeco/AT&T around 2/3

10:21 |
: Kind of depends what you’re looking for, and how you balance views/sightlines/history/amenities/etc
|
10:21 |
: /quality of home product
|
10:22 |
Did you see McGee’s three-pitch strikeout of Saltalamaccia? It reminded me of the piece you did about Matt Harvey and swinging strikes right down the middle. |
10:22 |
: and then there’s Kenley Jansen blowing away Justin Upton
|
10:22 |
: about McGee: I haven’t dug into this at all, but it was interesting to see him brought in specifically for Ryan Raburn, but also intentionally walk a pinch-hitting Jonny Gomes
|
10:22 |
I can’t help but think there is something criminal about destroying a stadium after 30ish years…I mean and I recycle my cans and watch the Kingdom go down? It wasn’t a great stadium, but dang! |
10:23 |
: What do you want to do? Leave it there as a monument to Rob Ducey?
|
10:23 |
: The Astrodome is still around, which is weird
|
10:24 |
: I was saddened to hear of the destruction of Tiger Stadium, but I’m glad the field has been preserved
|
10:24 |
Any thoughts on why the Cardinals haven’t used Shelby Miller in their NLDS rotation? Matchups? Or is he gassed? |
10:24 |
: They believe that he’s out of gas, and I believe they probably know him better than we do. If they stay alive, they’ll see what he has out of the bullpen
|
10:24 |
Does postseason experience actually matter |
10:24 |
: not really
|
10:25 |
Carlos Martinez start for STL next year? What about Taveras? |
10:25 |
: Taveras is going to be on that team by June, if he’s not on it in April
|
10:25 |
would a TB/Oakland ALCS have the lowest viewership in the last 10 years? |
10:26 |
: I’m sure lots of people would love to find out and tell us
|
10:26 |
: Oakland might surprise, in their potential viewership?
|
10:26 |
What do you think is the first stadium from the “post-Camden” era to be torn down? My money is on either Rangers in favor of a dome or Atlanta because that stadium never really felt like it was meant just for the Braves. |
10:27 |
: Yeah, I’m going to go Turner Field
|
10:28 |
: but I could see the Rangers investing in some other huge complex
|
10:28 |
Laurelwood espresso stout, pinky up or down? beer snobs shouldnt give thumbs up |
10:28 |
: I haven’t had that for a long while, but it’s only now getting into espresso stout season again
|
10:28 |
: Assume pinky up
|
10:28 |
Do you follow any NESCAC sports? |
10:28 |
: I only know when Trinity squash loses
|
10:29 |
Odds Kuroda resigns with New York? |
10:29 |
: 60%
|
10:30 |
Price hates nerds…therefore hates epstein…therefore hates the cubs |
10:30 |
: Price plays for Tampa Bay
|
10:30 |
The Mariners think cyclical nature is a nice bike ride through Olympic National Park |
10:30 |
: that sounds lovely
|
10:30 |
: they wouldn’t be wrong
|
10:30 |
Jackie Bradley Jr just a 4th OFer? |
10:30 |
: heavens no
|
10:30 |
I just read a story that no one one the Braves would catch Chipper Jones first pitch because he predicted the Dodgers would win. Seems like the Braves clubhouse is really uptight. |
10:31 |
: “Evidently, Braves players were not happy Jones had gone on the radio earlier in the day with the team’s flagship station, 680 The Fan, and predicted the Dodgers would win the NLDS in four games. So no player volunteered to catch the pitch.”
|
10:31 |
: dear god
|
10:32 |
: what an unpleasant team to root for
|
10:32 |
Do you look for the Braves to explore the trade market to upgrade second base, even if they have to eat all or most of Uggla’s contract in the process? |
10:32 |
: I think they let him try to bounce back, this year
|
10:34 |
Who do you think goes after Ubaldo? Does he get more or less than Edwin Jackson? |
10:34 |
: Too many teams to list are going to get involved in that market, but ultimately I think he settles for a shorter commitment than Jackson got
|
10:34 |
Who has the better pitching line tonight: Fister or Straily? |
10:34 |
: Fister
|
10:35 |
Is Joe Maddon really a genius? Or just a self-important turd? |
10:35 |
: No, he’s not a genius. He’s just a relative genius, given his managerial peers
|
10:35 |
: He does a great job leading that team, and he’s strategically open-minded and creative. He’s everything one should want in a baseball team’s manager
|
10:35 |
The Orioles always say they believe in “growing the arms” but could/should they be all in for Tanaka? It’s the kind of risk that could pay off big time. |
10:35 |
: it’s about time the Orioles actually try to get better
|
10:36 |
: I don’t think anyone should go “all in” for anybody but Tanaka would be one hell of a fit
|
10:36 |
From a Cardinals fan: he has had very poor home/road splits this year so pitching him on the road was always an iffy proposition, and he also looked extremely gassed the last couple weeks. |
10:36 |
: re: Miller
|
10:36 |
Does live blog experience actually matter? |
10:37 |
: it helps you prepare, you know what you’re in for, but when the game gets started it’s just another live blog with entirely different circumstances
|
10:37 |
I know it’s hard to predict injuries/recovery, but do you think Dylan Bundy makes at least one start for the Orioles next year? |
10:37 |
: a few down the stretch
|
10:37 |
Boegarts the starting SS for Boston on opening day? |
10:38 |
: Probably
|
10:38 |
Re the Reds being in trouble soon, on top of Choo leaving the Reds also have a whole bunch of players hitting free agency either after 2014 or 2015, nearly all of whom are likely to be priced out of the Reds’ budget. And that list is headed up by Cueto, Bailey and Latos. The odds of the Reds being able to keep more than 1 of those guys is somewhere between slim and none. |
10:38 |
: It’s going to take a lot of work to keep that team highly competitive for the next while. This is their window
|
10:38 |
There are so many great stories that could come from Oakland advancing and possibly winning the WS. Bad for viewership, maybe, but great for baseball. |
10:39 |
: A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates A’s Pirates
|
10:39 |
Wow, if the story about Chipper is true then that clubhouse went to crap after Chipper and Bobby Cox left. |
10:39 |
as szymborski noted, the best retort to someone predicting that you’ll lose as series in 4 is to not lose in 4 |
10:39 |
Chipper grew up a Dodger’s fan too, learned to switch hit matching their lineup on the TV, he played with the Braves a year ago, come on…. |
10:40 |
You don’t think it’s strange that Chipper picked the Dodgers? |
10:40 |
: I didn’t hear the interview, and sure it’s a little strange, but presumably honest
|
10:40 |
: the Braves should be bigger people. Jones did everything for that organization
|
10:41 |
The Braves don’t have the money and Atlanta doesn’t have the (cheap/available) land area for a new stadium there, though I personally would like to see one. |
10:41 |
: but it’s not like there’s a lot of other candidates. all those stadiums are good!
|
10:41 |
: or at least not bad
|
10:41 |
: maybe the answer is heavy renovations
|
10:41 |
Has it been asked: Who ya got, As or Tigers? |
10:42 |
: I think the Tigers are a little better but now the A’s just have to win one of two, so I’d be silly to not pick them for the series
|
10:42 |
: whatever difference there is between the teams is significantly reduced by Cabrera playing hurt
|
10:42 |
How much money (total commitment) do you think the Astros are going to spend on FA this offseason? |
10:43 |
: not enough to quiet their critics. it’s not like high-priced sorts are going to want to sign with Houston anyway
|
10:43 |
: they’re going to take some lower-risk gambles on bounceback types
|
10:43 |
Redskins are under fire. How much longer until Cleveland is too? |
10:43 |
: at least Indians as a name isn’t outright derogatory
|
10:44 |
The Pirates are getting good Pedro Alvarez right now. He is a wrecking machine when he’s on, and hard to watch when he’s not. |
10:44 |
Alvarez, June: 1.060 OPS |
10:45 |
: don’t think there’s anything predictive in these stretches, but there aren’t many players in baseball with more raw power
|
10:45 |
NYY the model of mediocrity in ’14? |
10:45 |
: they’ll contend again
|
10:45 |
What’s worse: Tomahawk Chop or Hitler? |
10:46 |
: Tomahawk chop, because Hitler is dead
|
10:46 |
: I’m going to wrap this up, you guys. Stuff to get to, per usual.
|
10:46 |
: Thanks everybody for hanging out, and I’m sorry for what I didn’t or couldn’t address. We’ll do it again next week, and for today, have fun with the pair of could-be elimination games. Be well and have great days

Jeff made Lookout Landing a thing, but he does not still write there about the Mariners. He does write here, sometimes about the Mariners, but usually not.
@Miller, you should go to Chicago on a great scholarship. No real difference between Chicago and Stanford, and you’ll have more flexibility when you graduate.
Yeah, but getting to live in Palo Alto for three years is leaps and bounds better than Chicago (which is fine, but…). So there’s that.
Lol. Chicago is a far better place to live than Palo Alto.
I live in San Francisco and work in Mountain View–blow them both off and go to UCLA.
