I find it a little annoying that Christian Villanueva has 3B to 2B talks that can be taken seriously but if you say that Javier Baez might end up at 2B rather than 3B you get a *why, that cant be* (for some reason my quotes and apostrophe button isnt working) reaction.
Villanueva to 2nd is interesting enough I guess. I have no problem in trying to make him a Prado/DeRosa/utility starter type.
Well, the Villanueva as a potential 2B talks were something first mentioned by me in previous pieces. He was a special defensive 3B when I saw him and I suspected he could handle the challenge.
As for Baez, I’m not sure who has dismissed the possibility of him to 2B. It’s really not something I can assess right now given I only have info from contacts to go on.
The Baez to 2B stuff is just something that, since its not heavily promoted by Baseball America and/or other writers, gets dismissed in inter-Cubs fans conversations I have. A great deal of people seem to have cemented him into 3B since he got drafted.
Definitely dont mind the opinion on Villanueva and respect the thought process. You have mentioned that he put on some size this year that slowed him down a little. Im only skeptical because its weird to see someone moved up the defensive spectrum, though 2B and 3B are pretty close together.
But then, although seond and third are not that far apart on the spectrum, they do require different skill sets, and the prevailing wisdom is that Baez’s skill set is likely to match up better to third than second, if he can’t stick at short.
