NERD Game Scores for Sunday, May 17, 2015

Devised originally in response to a challenge issued by viscount of the internet Rob Neyer, and expanded at the request of nobody, NERD scores represent an attempt to summarize in one number (and on a scale of 0-10) the likely aesthetic appeal or watchability, for the learned fan, of a player or team or game. Read more about the components of and formulae for NERD scores here.

Most Highly Rated Game
Milwaukee at New York NL | 13:10 ET
Peralta (45.0 IP, 100 xFIP-) vs. Syndergaard (5.1 IP, 128 xFIP-)
Young Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard’s major-league debut wasn’t a rousing success, necessarily, in terms either of run prevention or defense-independent numbers. It also wasn’t a complete failure by those standards, either, though. And more relevant to the reader searching for maximum pleasure this afternoon is that the giant Nord exhibited the repertoire which has earned him considerable praise from scouting types, sitting at 97 mph with his fastball and throwing a curveball capable of provoking considerable duress for opposing hitters.

This curveball, specifically:

NS Curve 3

Readers’ Preferred Broadcast: Milwaukee Radio or New York NL Television.

Two Brief Notes
Debut Alert: Baltimore’s Mike Wright
The purpose of this brief note is to report that Baltimore right-hander Mike Wright is scheduled to make his major-league debut for that same club today at 1:35pm ET. The 25-year-old Wright was ranked eighth among Orioles prospects this offseason by Kiley McDaniel. According to McDaniel, Wright has historically exhibited an above-average fastball and changeup, but a less effective slider. That said, his strikeout rate so far this season for Triple-A Norfolk represents the highest such mark that he’s produced at any minor-league level — perhaps indicating some improvement on Wright’s part.

The last time I thought of this I may have only merely thought it, rather than posted it, but Carson, you need to look into using your grandfather’s Italian heritage to acquire for yourself Italian citizenship. From what I understand of your family history, it should be possible. And from what I understand of your desire to live in a much more European place than New Hampshire, USA (based mainly on the things that you say in your podcasts), you really should consider it seriously. I sure would. Y’know the way you always say you regret not being Jewish? Well, I regret not having a grandfather who emigrated from Italy because of exactly this opportunity that is available to you.

So Carson should become an Italian citizen and move there because you want to?

That, and the fact that if you listen to him talk so much about how work shouldn’t dominate life, you can see that he is a prime candidate for Eurofication. Plus, I’m sure he’d get a kick out of following and perhaps promoting the Italian and other European baseball leagues.
