Caribbean Series
Scores from Yesterday
Puerto Rican team Mayaguez defeated Venezuelan Winter League champion Aragua, 3-1 (box).

Escogido of the Dominican Winter League defeated Mexican Pacific League side Obregon, 2-1 (box).

Notes on Those Games
• Mayaguez right-hander Nelson Figueroa did this: 6.2 IP, 8 K, 2 BB, 0 HR.
• There was precisely one extra-base hit between the two games: Mayaguez center fielder Jesus Feliciano’s second-inning ground-rule double.
• Right-hander Jairo Asencio recorded the save for Escogido, striking out two in an inning of work. Asencio was the boss of the DWL for much of the season, finishing second on the SCOUT pitching leaderboard.

Projecting: ZiPS for Arizona
Dan Szymborski has published his ZiPS projections for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Below are some of the notable ones, accompanied by veryrough WAR projections (for hitters per 600 plate appearances and pitchers per 200 innings). All numbers assume major-league competition. OPS+ and ERA+ are park-adjusted.

Jason Kubel, RF, 30: .277/.342/.487, 117 OPS+, 2.7 WAR600
Gerardo Parra, LF, 25: .279/.336/.411, 97 OPS+, 1.3 WAR600

Remember, of course, that, while these WAR projections include positional adjustments, they don’t include fielding runs saved. In that regard, Kubel is probably about a -5 run defender in an outfield corner; Parra is, conservatively speaking, a +5 run defender (although might actually be closer to a +10 run one). That closes the gap between the pair: ca. 2.2 WAR600 for Kubel; ca. 1.8 WAR600 for Parra.

Josh Collmenter, RHP, 26: 143.0 IP, 100 K, 49 BB, 16 HR, 2.0 WAR200
That’s a good projection for someone who’s also among the more pleasant pitchers to watch.

Trevor Bauer, RHP, 21: 140.0 IP, 143 K, 64 BB, 19 HR, 1.9 WAR200
Arizona took Bauer third overall in last summer’s draft, after which the right-hander threw 25.2 innings between High- and Double-A, striking out 43 of the 119 (36.1%) batters he faced. Appears as though he could pitch — and survive — in the majors this second. The D’backs might try to survive with the re-signed Joe Saunders until June, to push Bauer’s free agency back a year, but Bauer is probably a better pitcher right now.
