Paul Sporer Baseball Chat — 5/14/15

11:49
Comment From Zach Sanders
HI PAUL!

11:49
Paul Sporer: Hey everyone, we’ll get started shortly!

11:49
Paul Sporer: Hi Zach!!!

11:49
Comment From LudeBurger
Sporer is taking over!!

11:49
Comment From AL Pitching Coach
A Thursday with Paul? Woohoo!!!! Ventura or Shoemaker ROS?

11:51
Paul Sporer: Shoemaker for me. They were very close for me to start the season, though, and they still are… albeit bumped down a little after their starts

11:51
Comment From Bryan
Evan Gattis or Jonathan Lucroy from the point Lucroy gets healthy to the rest of the year?

11:51
Paul Sporer: If it’s just from when Lucroy gets healthy, I’ll take him. I think I’d take him even if it was from right now, too, though.

11:51
Comment From I Choo Choo Choose Paul Sporer
Two weeks ago I was ready to drop Shin-soo in my AL-only. Now he’s one of my best players. By no means am I complaining, but what in the world happened?

11:52
Paul Sporer: I’m sure you saw this? http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… Nothing happened, really. He just wasn’t as bad as he was playing. Simple regression. He’s a very good player.

11:52
Comment From Mark
Is Jason Kipnis just a streaky player like this?

11:54
Paul Sporer: Yeah, and I’m not really a fan because his career amounts to a few good months right now: May 2012 and May-June 2013. He’s in the midst of another great May. Get at me when he’s doing something in July.

11:54
Comment From Alex
When Carlos Correa gets called up, he’s a top ___ shortstop the rest of the way.

11:56
Paul Sporer: Probably top 12, but that’s more bc the position has been garbage so far this year. You just never know how ready a 20-year old will be. Temper expectations, but obviously he’s someone you gotta go for when called up.

11:56
Comment From Kris
16th round Starling Marte for 24th round Gerrit Cole? Or hold Marte and go grab guys like Chase Anderson, Clay Bucholz, etc on free agency

11:57
Paul Sporer: I’m completely cool with that trade if you need pitching. If you want to stream, that works, too. Both answers are legitimate. I think Cole is enough for Marte, though, and it’ll save you the headache of streaming especially if you have O behind Marte.

11:57
Comment From Professor Ross Eforp
Can we get some ink on how ridiculously good Corey Kluber was last night? How long until we see a better game?

11:58
Paul Sporer: This is why so many of us were beating the drum that nothing was wrong. He’s so awesome.

11:58
Comment From Craig (DC)
Trade away Quintana and Uehara for Lester and Cecil? Have Miller, Box and Rondon

11:59
Paul Sporer: Yeah, that’s pretty good. Your trade partner realizes Q’s value despite the inflated ERA which is nice

11:59
Comment From Maxamuz
Great, Paul is here.

11:59
Paul Sporer: Hmm… doesn’t feel like a compliment, but I’ll read as such anyway!

11:59
Comment From George is Curious
With the Red Sox pitching issues, and Masterson going on the DL, any chance we could see Eduardo Rodriguez called up soon?

12:02
Paul Sporer: I think we gotta see something different from that crew so yeah we could Eduardo very soon

12:02
Comment From Teddy
How would you rank Michael Pineda the rest of the way? Top 20? Higher or lower? Would you consider selling high on him because of his health history?

12:03
Paul Sporer: I can give you a firm answer to that soon as we’re doing updated rankings for release shortly. I’m not sure he’s all the way to top 20, but def top 25 for me. At the same time, you can consider dealing him bc of that health history.

12:04
Comment From Marcus Banks
Michael Pineda is the best pitcher in New York City.

12:05
Paul Sporer: I’m still taking Harvey over him.

12:05
Comment From John
oh boy a paul sporer chat? i just asked about this tuesday night! i am so excited

12:05
Paul Sporer: :sunglasses emoji:

12:05
Comment From Hops
Have you had any beers from No Label or Southern Star?

12:06
Paul Sporer: Enooooo, there’s question for you in my chat.

12:06
Comment From Ryan
Hey Paul curious as to your thoughts on he pirates first round pick from last year Cole Tucker?

12:07
Paul Sporer: Wildly unqualified to help you there. My bandwidth is such that I usually don’t hone in on guys until High-A at the earliest. Heavy focus on MLB leaves a gap somewhere and it’s usually low-minors and amateur ranks for me.

12:07
Comment From BC
Is Bryant, Hamels, Calhoun for Han-Ram, Fiers,Wright, and Simon veto-able? (keeper league Bryant can be kept for $21)

12:07
Paul Sporer: Not at all.

12:08
Comment From Barnicle
Kluber

12:08
Comment From BC
Andrus or Rollins ROS (OBP league)?

12:08
Paul Sporer: Oh god, do I have to? When it’s two suckfests, I’m almost always going to lean younger, so Andrus

12:08
Comment From Jake the Snake
What’s your take on Shelby Miller? Is he 4 realz? Would you trade he and Ortiz for Freeman or Votto?

12:10
Paul Sporer: Yeah I think he’s a really good pitcher, so there is a lot of realness ot what we’re seeing. As much as I love Votto, I think that’s a little much. Unless you think this is finally the year Ortiz doesn’t bounce back. He’s been much lower than this and rebounded so I think he’ll be fine. The diff between Ortiz and those two studs isn’t Miller.

12:10
Comment From Barnicle
What is the deal with Ventura? It just seems like he should be better, no? Maybe I’ve just got a Pedro Jr. thing stuck in my head.

12:10
Paul Sporer: I definitely think some of it is mental right now. He’s way in his head with all the BS swirling around him and the team this year. Mostly self-created, though, so he’s gonna have to figure it out.

12:10
Comment From Texas Dolly
Thoughts on Tommy Field? I know nothing about him and am mildly curious. Is he worth a flier in an AL-only?

12:11
Paul Sporer: Wouldn’t sweat him. Maybe he’s Yangervis Solarte on his best day

12:11
Comment From Fluffy+Duffy
Paul, any pitchers in the minors that might make an impact ROS? Heaney? Anyone else?

12:12
Paul Sporer: I like Heaney. I haven’t looked it over to have all the young names ready. Of course there will be some impact arms coming up, but they aren’t as obvious right now with Syndergaard, Bradley, and Rodon already up. I like Tropeano from LAA, too.

12:12
Comment From JD
A possible wrist injury with Wil Myers – do we know what’s wrong yet and should I be worried that it’s a wrist injury at all after reading Eno’s article?

12:12
Paul Sporer: Don’t panic yet. It’s very early.

12:13
Comment From JAL
How worried should I be about Bautista?

12:13
Paul Sporer: Between 0 and 0.5%

12:13
Comment From Saves Vulture
Please rank in terms of most likely to snatch some saves ROS: Osuna, Tazawa, Carson Smith. Thanks!

12:13
Paul Sporer: Tazawa, Smith, Osuna

12:13
Comment From Shawn
Better DL stash- Justin Verlander, Matt Moore, or Hisashi Iwakuma?

12:14
Paul Sporer: Hmmm…. JV or Iwakuma. I ain’t funkin’ with Moore in his TJ return. He’s a 2016 look for me

12:14
Comment From Scooter
C. Carter: early season slump like 2014, or worse? Drop for L. Forsythe in a deep 5×5?

12:15
Paul Sporer: It’s similar to last year’s as some have outlined, but that doesn’t mean he WILL rebound. That said, he’s SUPER streaky and you sign up for that when you draft him. Just set it and forget it. No Forsythe

12:16
Comment From John
at what point will the analytical community start turning on these “genius” gms like alderson? i mean this mets team is awful. he hasn’t addressed offense in 4 years. He signed way past prime mediocre players to contracts, surrendering draft pics in the process, and doesn’t address anything. Nobody believes Niese or Colon can keep up what their doing, and weve seen the pen start to implode. We knew they werentas good as their 11 game win streak, but i cant watch any of these games and think – no it might get better. 5 years of this asshole is enough.

12:16
Paul Sporer: Tough crowd. They’re still in first place. I do think Colon’s season is perfectly legit. Niese is obviously due regression, but they’ve got hella pitching depth. I’d be thrilled if I were Mets fan right now, tbh. The future is bright.

12:16
Comment From Warren
Obviously Vogt will cool down, but is he a top 5 C ROS?

12:16
Paul Sporer: Yeah, I’m sold on him.

12:17
Comment From JAL
Hi Paul. I never trade. Made two “blockbusters” on two different 5×5 12-teamers. Wanted your opinion. 1, Donaldson and Corey Dickerson for Jose Abreu and Kris Bryant. 2, A Gon, Josh Donaldson, and DeSclafani for Kyle Seager, Giancarlo, and Cashner. Appreciate it!!

12:18
Paul Sporer: Both of those really fair deals. I can’t even pick a side in trade 1 and I’d lean toward side B in trade 2

12:18
Comment From Woody Barrelson
Would you rather – Ian Desmond or Semien?

12:18
Paul Sporer: Still Desmond for me. Impressed w/Semien, though

12:18
Comment From Shawn
Buying Strasburg still with the idea the ankle injury affected his mechanics?

12:19
Paul Sporer: I just can’t quit him entirely. I know it’s rough right now, but he’s insanely talented. I don’t think I’m messing with a buy-low, but I’m not selling either

12:19
Comment From Scooter
16 team 5×5: Thoughts on Collebello? He’s been a great pick up, but how long will it continue?

12:19
Paul Sporer: See also: 2014

12:19
Comment From Barnicle
Jordan Zimmerman’s SIERA is 4.51. Thoughts as to what it will be at the end of the year?

12:20
Paul Sporer: is Fangraphs down for anyone else right now?

12:21
Comment From Jack Elliott
Looking for a catcher ROS, Yan Gomes or Andrew Susac?

12:21
Paul Sporer: Still Gomes

12:21
Comment From rustydude
FG down for me

12:21
Comment From Pirates+Hurdles
yep it is down

12:21
Paul Sporer: OK, i’ll alert the authorities

12:21

Comment From Maxamuz
I cant get to fangraphs. Runtime Error

12:22
Comment From Matt
Working for me

12:22
Paul Sporer: NO ONE LIKES A BRAGGART, MATT

12:22
Comment From JD
Alex Guerrero better then the current rest of season projections?

12:22
Paul Sporer: I think ZIPS is pretty fair. We gotta temper expectations somewhat so 13 more bombs is pretty fair. I think he can do more, but if I’m valuing him, I’m trying not to pay much more than that ZIPS proj.

12:22
Comment From Matt
/cue runtime error……

12:22
Comment From Larry Bernandez
interesting how the site as a whole is down, but this chat is alive

12:22
Comment From JD
If Wil Myers healthy can he be expected to produce what he’s done thus far this year?

12:23
Paul Sporer: Yeah, he’s a really good player. The finish in TB soured some on him (myself included), but when you look at him play, you realize he’s still v good

12:23
Comment From Bart
Runtime error

12:23
Comment From Nattys
I need your love Paul. Am I insane to trade Desmond for strasburg right now?

12:24
Paul Sporer: Not at all. A great move there. Not even selling low on Des

12:24
Comment From mtsw
Pujols or Pederson RoS?

12:24
Paul Sporer: Pederson.

12:24
Comment From Conor
Yelich or Soler in a keeper league?

12:25
Paul Sporer: Soler barely. Really like both long-term, not sure Yelich has a power spike that a lot of people see, though

12:25
Comment From LarryA
Stinky Odor or Franco in a keeper league?

12:25
Paul Sporer: Stink

12:25
Comment From rustydude
Not sure if owner of Carrasco in my AL only league understands how good his peripherals are. Trying to match up a hitter to get him. Is Zobrist or Calhoun too much to offer? I know the owner won’t accept a lesser value hitter.

12:26
Paul Sporer: Either works. Z would be a discount, but Calhoun is probably what it’s gonna take since your trade partner realizes – as you do – that Car Carr has been much better than his 4.82 ERA

12:26
Comment From Bart
I was offered Polanco and Franco for Cespedes. My team is in dead last and going no where fast. It’s a 10 team dynasty league. Should I make the trade?

12:27
Paul Sporer: Yeah. If you’re toast, you gotta do that. Love Yo, but Polanco could be matching his overall production soon and you get a free Franco

12:27
Comment From Maxamuz
I’m just upset that Kluber pitched so well last night. I’ve been trying to trade for him and now his price will be Harper high.

12:28
Paul Sporer: I hear you there. I tried a trade that wasn’t even really a buy-low on Monday for Kluber (it had Scherzer going back and then I was getting some advantage on the complimentary pieces) and I was turned down

12:28
Comment From Cory
Paul, love the chat… On said chat, you’ve said you like Brandon Crawford – can you rank the following MI for the year? Rollins, Crawford, Cozart, Gennett

12:29
Paul Sporer: Crawford, Cozart/Gennett neck-and-neck (Scooter isn’t this bad at all), and then Rollins

12:29
Comment From Lago
Getting sick of DeGrom and don’t think he will perform like last year. Trade for Kipnis? Myers? Billy Hamilton?

12:31
Paul Sporer: WHIP is a little high, but nothing else should be making you sick about him. He was sure to regress some from last year. That said, those trades are fine. I’m not a huge Kipnis guy, but I can admit he looks great right now. I’d probably go Myers or Kip unless you really need the SBs

12:31
Comment From LarryA
Has a GM EVER acnowledged that a prospect wasn’t being called up due to Super 2 status?

12:31
Paul Sporer: No way

12:31
Comment From Warren
how worried are you about Tulo? Walk rate is has me concerned.

12:31
Paul Sporer: Not too worried. Might be a mental thing at this point with trade rumors swirling again, but I think he’ll be fine.

12:32
Comment From Brad
Cargo and vmart look shot. best offers I’ve gotten for them are souza for cargo and heston for vmart? roto 14 team. thoughts? thanks.

12:33
Paul Sporer: Victor looked shot for 2 months in ’13 as well. Then hit like one of baseball’s best players the rest of the way. Cargo isn’t this bad, but worries are understandable. I might actually take that Souza deal in a keeper.

12:33
Comment From Dude
10 teamer- Jose Quintana is on the WW. Is he worth my #3 claim?

12:34
Paul Sporer: Yes. Look at how good he’s been since the 9 ER dud – 2.08 ERA in 26 IP w/28 Ks

12:34
Comment From daneyko
Carlos Gonzalez is the next Andrew Jones ? Do you believe in Cargo ROS?

12:34
Paul Sporer: I believe he’s better than this, but that’s not saying much. I’ve actually never been a huge Cargo guy.

12:34
Comment From Bart
Is Carlos Gonzalez trying to do his best Choo impersonation or is he going to return to his to a semblance of his former self?

12:35
Comment From Dude
Traded Familia for Bruce. Think Bruce is about to turn it on? His peripherals point to better days ahead and if he

12:35
Paul Sporer: Bart, see above.

12:36
Paul Sporer: I’m cool with that Bruce deal. And agree that much better days are coming

12:36
Comment From KB
’15 Marcus Semien = ’14 Anthony Rendon?

12:37
Paul Sporer: In that he could post Rendon’s HR/SB numbers, yes. In that he’s a legit top 30 talent, not so much. I know Rendon has been a huge disappointment this yr bc of injury, but he’s a great hitter and I’m not sure I’d use that classification for Semien just yet

12:37
Comment From Woody Barrelson
The worst part of H2H is when your entire team decides to put up an 0-fer… for 3 days in a row

12:38
Paul Sporer: LOL, no doubt. I’m not a huge H2H guy. I do play in one where we play 3 teams each week and I started 1-5.

12:38
Comment From BrewCrew
Hang on to Odor in a 15 team keeper league with limited bench space?

12:39
Paul Sporer: At least until you can. If it comes to a point where your whole bench is injured or minors’d, then you’d have to cut him, but he should be low on the list of guys to cut right now.

12:39
Comment From Roger Dodger
Do you play DFS? If so, how successful have you been so far? Any strategy tips you can share with someone just starting to play?

12:41
Paul Sporer: I do. I’m OK. But the chat isn’t the best place for a rundown of tips. We have our DFS pod (http://www.fangraphs.com/fa…) and the Daily Grind (http://www.fangraphs.com/fa…) on Rotographs, but I’d also take a look at Rotogrinders. They do great stuff over there (full disclosure: I write there, too), but I think some of their introductory stuff would get you set up nicely

12:41
Comment From Bobby Blownilla
Any teams other than Philly that you could stream almost any starter against?

12:42
Paul Sporer: A’s and White Sox w/lefties. Angels are anemic outside of Trout & Calhoun right now. Phillies are probably the only universal, though. I don’t buy MIL as a total dud offensively and they seem to be starting to regress toward their mean. Same with PIT.

12:42
Comment From Lance
Final pitcher spot…Quintana, Chase Anderson, Kennedy, Rodon, Bauer?

12:43
Paul Sporer: Quintana. Love Rodon, but he’s going to be limited this year whereas we know Q is a quality 200-IP pitcher.

12:43
Comment From Bob
Would you trade Votto and Wacha for Tyson Ross and EE in a H2H weekly points leauge?

12:44
Paul Sporer: I personally wouldn’t bc those are two of my favorites you’re dealing and when it’s close – as this is – I’d lean toward my favorites. However, it’s a perfectly fair deal, espec. since Wacha isn’t missing bats (though I truly believe he can be at least an 18-20% K rate guy with the potential for even more)

12:45
Comment From BrewCrew
Would you rather have Kluber or Salazar for the next 3 years?

12:45
Paul Sporer: Klubes

12:45
Comment From Greg
Does Alex Wood turn it around. His command seems off…

12:45
Paul Sporer: Which isn’t surprising given his mechanics. I was pretty tepid on him last year and he went and commanded all year and tricked me into getting on board. Thankfully I didn’t get any shares, but I was like “oh maybe this funkiness can work” and now we’re seeing the volatility

12:46
Comment From joe
Whats wrong with Jay Bruce? and is Cozart for real this year? it looks like he’s just been able to finally hit the fastball

12:46
Paul Sporer: Bruce is gonna be fine. His profile says better days are coming for sure. Cozart can be a double-digit HR guy, but I’m not buying the AVG

12:47
Comment From Raindog
More likely to have actually fallen off a cliff: Chase Utley or Matt Joyce?

12:47
Paul Sporer: Utley. Oldies can jump the cliff without warning.

12:47
Comment From joe
Cozart>Ian Desmond?

12:47
Paul Sporer: No

12:47
Comment From John
maxamuz has two man crushes: Lucas Duda and Eno Sarris

12:47
Paul Sporer: LOL, aww

12:47
Comment From Guest
I’d like to start a petition to make Paul Chats an every weekday occurence. Kiley is great and I love his stuff, but not much changes in the propsect landscape on a week to week basis

12:48
Paul Sporer: Kiley pwned.

12:49
Comment From LarryA
Would you have left Kuber out there for the 9th? He was only at 113 pitches? Whos call was that anyways, since Francona was ejected?

12:50
Paul Sporer: I thought it was a total either-or. I understood both ways. I would’ve totally supported him going back out given who he is and the fact that I think he could handle a 125-130 pitch game, but I totally get just giving Allen the ball there (even with Allen’s struggles). I’m sure Francona is still getting his thoughts in the mix

12:50
Comment From Franklin
I realize that Kang is playing more, but I also think he should be playing everyday. How long can the Pirates run Mercer out there if he isn’t going to hit?

12:50
Paul Sporer: I’ll be writing about Kang in my piece coming up later today

12:51
Comment From Dr. Hoist
Who do we like in DFS today? I like Wacha in the morning, Cueto in the evening and maybe Hutch in GPP’s.

12:51
Paul Sporer: Haven’t peeped the night slate, yet.

12:51
Comment From Hop Head
Each team dealing from their strengths. Who gets the better of a Jorge Soler for David Robertson deal?

12:51
Paul Sporer: I prefer the hitter. Fair deal, though

12:51
Comment From rustydude
With Miley the only lefty in Boston’s rotation, E-Rod is desperately needed, right?

12:51
Paul Sporer: He’s desperately needed because they suck, not bc of handedness.

12:51
Comment From Greg
What do you make of McCutchen at this point? He seems to be turning it on a bit the last week or two. Was it a slump was he hurt or both?

12:52
Paul Sporer: Little of both, but he’s fine. He’s coming out of it.

12:52
Comment From Jon
Processed this trade yesterday morning: Gave Bauer/Reddick/Grilli to get Kluber/Kimbrel. His first start on my team was last night. I don’t have a question.

12:52
Comment From Snarfle
Harper or Kershaw in a keep 3? Am I nuts for wanting to keep Harper?

12:52
Paul Sporer: No, not at all. Keeping pitchers is always risky, even Kershaw

12:52
Comment From Joey Kellys momma
Why are these fellas hitting my boy so hard?

12:53
Paul Sporer: Because he doesn’t command his stuff very well. Batter gets ahead and he’s in trouble

12:53
Comment From mtsw
Think Gausman gets slotted into the O’s rotation when he returns from the DL?

12:53
Paul Sporer: Maybe not immediately, but at some point, yes

12:54
Comment From Phillip
Trade Pedroia for Pineda?

12:54
Paul Sporer: Yeah, that’s pretty fair assuming needs align. As I’ve said a few times, I usually prefer the hitter in a 1-for-1, but if needs match, I’ll take the arm in a deal like this

12:54
Comment From Damon
Punted saves in a 10 team roto league. Picked up Ramos for trade bait if he got the closer job. Offer on the table straight up for Holliday. Take it and run?

12:54
Paul Sporer: OMFG YES. #humblebrag

12:55
Comment From Eddie Brock
Is it too early for the Indians to bust out the Rachel Phelps cardboard cutout? 2nd in xfip, 1st in k/9, and highest babip (all before last night) has me hopeful they can still make a run here soon.

12:56
Paul Sporer: I do think they’ve got a run in them, but they might need to get their D in order. I imagine if we scrutinized it, we’d see a lot of misplayed D that isn’t errors so it doesn’t really show up unless you’re watching. That’s what’s happening with CWS, too, IMO

12:56
Comment From Sully
your Wade Miley preseason prediction isn’t looking so hot, huh? Still have hope for him?

12:56
Paul Sporer: It sure isn’t. He’s obviously better than this, but I’m fine moving on from him

12:56
Comment From Lance
Can you rank these guys ROS in a H2H that counts k’s? Moss, Reddick, Zimmerman, Polanco?

12:57
Paul Sporer: Flip Moss and Reddick

12:57
Comment From Jack Elliott
Corey Kluber is the best pitcher in Cleveland.

12:57
Comment From Lago
Eovaldi or Hutchison?

12:57
Paul Sporer: Eovaldi, but both will likely anger you

12:58
Comment From Josh G
Does Addison Reed lose his job? Who would you say is next in line?

12:58
Paul Sporer: Yeah, I can definitely see it. I was still holding out hope, but he’s been brutal. Ziegler is the pickup

12:58
Comment From Bart
What kind of upside does Noah Syndergaard have, top 1 or 2 tier pitcher?

12:59
Paul Sporer: Sure, but not this year. There is legit ace upside, but it really takes a lot for a guy to reach such heights.

12:59
Comment From BrewCrew
Who do you like in the Arizona pen as a spec play? Ziegler, Delgado or Hudson?

12:59
Comment From Josh G
What are your thoughts on Drew Hutchison ROS? He looked a lot better last time out.

12:59
Paul Sporer: Unfortunately, I expect more inconsistency which is maddening

12:59
Comment From Craig (DC)
Are you worried about Tulo’s lack of power and walks in the early going?

1:00
Paul Sporer: Mentioned him earlier. Not really sweating it. He’s way too good.

1:00
Comment From Brian
Thoughts on trading away Ian Desmond to get Strasburg? I have Starlin Castro as well – would be adding to pitching strength for weekly H2H league.

1:00
Paul Sporer: I feel like you already asked that

1:00
Comment From John
if you are in a league where you think trades should be vetoed, find a better league

1:00
Paul Sporer: Bingo.

1:00
Comment From Jobby Boy
Thoughts on Addison Reed? I know you were high on him in the preseason. Should I ride it out, or would you drop him for an also unappealing John Axford?

1:01
Paul Sporer: Scroll up a little!

1:01
Comment From Josh
With Rendon hurt who do you run out there at 3B everyday? Valbuena, Plouffe, Josh Harrison? I don’t really like any of them. Take a chance on Maikel Franco?

1:01
Paul Sporer: Plouffe, but I like Valbuena, too. Franco is meh to me.

1:01
Comment From STiVo
Quintana’s fastball velo slowly creeping back up. You buying?

1:01
Paul Sporer: Yeah, he’s been fantastic since the 9 ER. Never wavered on him.

1:01
Comment From Miketron
How long will Frias stay in the Dodgers rotation?

1:01
Paul Sporer: They need him right now. I’m a fan. Cistulli turned me onto him this offseason.

1:01
Comment From Bryan Drescher
What’s more likely, the Fish stick with Ramos and a mediocre pen, or go after an arm like Papelbon or K-Rod?

1:02
Paul Sporer: the former right now. Let’s see em get to .500 first and then they might entertain trades.

1:02
Comment From Dr J
Carrasco and Gordon for Archer in a 12-team roto league, who wins?

A fan of your work here. Quick question: 10tm 5×5 Cat. Should I stash Patrick Corbin? I just lost Smyly.

How deep of leagues are you comfortable rostering Kang? Is he a buy, sell or hold?

1:06
Paul Sporer: More coming on him today, but I’d go for him in just about anything but 10-teamers. I think there’d be enough starters available in a 10-team to not necessarily go for him just yet. Although if you’ve got a open reserve spot, he’s a good stash. I’m buying.

1:07
Comment From Alan
What sort of Pitcher can I expect to get back from Prince? Is this a good time to sell high on him?

1:08
Paul Sporer: I’d want a pretty good one. I’d maybe try for an Arrieta-type. See where your trade partners are at on Fielder. I’d settle for like a Quintana or Burnett WITH another piece. But Arrieta-level in a 1-for-1

1:08
Comment From Biggy
Do you agree that Harper is the number 3 asset in a keeper after Trout and Goldie?

1:08
Paul Sporer: I have no idea how I’d rank it just yet. But he’s very high. I’ve never wavered on Harper.

1:08
Comment From mtsw
Best strategy to win DFS GPP? It seems like stacking 1-2 lineups wins most days but hard to tell if that’s popular because its effective or vice versa.

1:09
Paul Sporer: For a GPP you usually need one mid-or-low tier SP to go off and then a less-obvious stack.

1:09
Comment From Josh I
How would YOU fix the A’s? Are they unfixable?

1:10
Paul Sporer: They need more arms behind Gray & Kaz, but they don’t really need much fixing. They’re much better than their record. Offense has impressed all things considered (though lefties are eating ’em alive)

Comment From SS Hoarder
So through various moves I currently have Tulo at SS, C-Santana at 3B, Semien at 2B, Castro on Bench, Zobrist on DL, and Rendon on DL. Who would you be looking to deal and for what type of return?

1:11
Paul Sporer: That’s REALLY vague and tough to answer. Just attack your needs and see who can best fill them, then let his needs determine who you offer

1:11

Can we just reflect on how great Kluber was last night? 18 Ks and not against the Astros but rather the Cardinals. That’s just incredibly impressive.

Comment From Josh G

Is Chris Archer having a breakout year? His FIP and xFIP look good. Should I try and sell high?

How long until the Jays move Sanchez back to the bullpen? The guy is not a starter!

1:23
Paul Sporer: I don’t know if you’d be saying that if he hadn’t had that successful run in the pen last year. Of course, anyone can be successful as a reliever. His is just the latest example that shows how much easier RP is than SP. He can definitely be a starter, but probably should be in the minors taking a turn every fifth day

What’s your timetable for a Watson closing gig? Will it happen at some point this year? Melancon’s velo isn’t coming back I’m assuming.

1:25
Paul Sporer: Melancon had 8 scoreless outings before his last. I still think he’s got some leash.

1:25
Comment From Mike
I really, really need SP help. Please rank: Verlander, Greene, Nelson, Pomeranz, Sabathia

1:26
Paul Sporer: Hmm, JV is still the best upside, but obviously a big question as he’s not even pitching. Nelson or Greene. I don’t know why people keep recommending CC. K/BB stuff doesn’t matter if you keep giving up homers. He’s last on the list.

1:27
Comment From Iggles
What do you expect of Rodon rest of the year? Do you think he sticks in the rotation? Do you think he will have an innings limit?

1:28
Paul Sporer: For the most part, yes. But they will skip him here and there or slot in a sixth guy. He’s only going to get about 160 IP this year (and maybe fewer if they don’t turn it around) and he’s already used 22.

Thoughts on Anthony Gose? Can he keep this up? Not the avergage but can he be a .270-.280 guy with 30-40 SB?

1:33
Paul Sporer: I was surprised he was so routinely dismissed after that deal. I realize it’d been bad from ’12-’14, but he entered the year at just 24 and his PT with TOR came in fits and starts. It was barely a season of work.

1:33
Comment From Kingpin (IA)
Standard 5×5 NL-only 8-team keeper league with 2 catchers per team. I currently have Plawecki & Susac. Drop either of them for Realmuto?

1:33
Comment From mtsw
Do AL/NL Central teams play more day games than other divisions or do I just think that because the Cubs (who actually do play more day games) bias the sample?

1:34
Paul Sporer: Tigers play a ton early every year and I love it as a Tigers fan. So maybe Cubs and Tigers are skewing you, especially since they’ll play a lot of Central teams, obv.

thoughts on Chase Anderson? I haven’t seen him throw this year but I hear he’s developed a good 2-seamer. sub-3.50 ERA?

Segura to DL with fractured pinkie. Can it get any worse in Milwaukee?

1:38

Comment From Craig (DC)
What do you think about some young arms like Karns and Frias ? Peripheral stats seem encouraging

1:42
Paul Sporer: I think both are intriguing. Can they get deep into games, though? Rays seem reluctant to turn Karns loose for that third time through. Frias is adding pitches each outing. I prefer him, but I like both

Thanks for answering. Re Bautista, just interested, how can you say 0-0.5% worried when he said he can’t brush his hair some days? Thanks!

Play in a league with five SP max and somebody dumped Strasburg. I’m high in waiver priority–who would you drop for him: Hamels, Cole, deGrom, Salazar, Carrasco. I like all of these guys.

Waiver wire heap includes Hammel, CJ Wilson, Leake, Kyle Gibson…any of them more than streamers and need to be rostered?

1:46
Comment From Hoff
Just finished reading Big Data by Travis Sawchik (chronicles the Pirates’ 2013 season, I highly recommend for all FG readers). One of the main themes was that analytics is alive in every clubhouse but the key is getting old school managers and guys who play the game to actually implement it on the field. I would postulate this is why teams are moving towards hiring younger managers (Matheny, Weiss, Redmond), do you think I am on to something?

1:48
Paul Sporer: Can’t wait for this book. Gonna have to audiobook it (comes out next week) but I’m super excited. I can definitely see the what you’re saying being part of the reason we’re seeing younger guys get these jobs, sometimes with no managing exp.

1:48
Comment From JJP
Need a pitcher in an 11 team NL. Starters are Cueto, Scherzer, Hamels, Peavy (Locke replacing). The rest are relievers. Should I consider Travis Wood?

1:50
Paul Sporer: Meh. K rate will decline and maybe he’s better than the 4.96 ERA, but not markedly so

1:50
Comment From Willy
Any reason to thnk Gallo will get the call soon?

Is Prince, Heyward and Familia enough for Cueto or do I need to set my sights lower?

1:51
Paul Sporer: I think that should be enough for sure. Might even be too much, though Heyward’s been poop so far

1:51
Comment From Biggy
Jason Heyward. I am SOOOOOO over him in my keeper. Thinking of long term, trade for what I can get, going with Alex Gordon instead. Time to bail?

1:51
Paul Sporer: I hear ya, it’s getting annoying. Too many GBs right now. I’m fine getting Gordon. Big fan of him, too

1:51

1:52
Comment From Matt
need to cut someone in my keeper league, how do you rank these youngins? C. Anderson, Foltynewicz, Happ, Aaron Sanchez

1:53

1:53
Comment From Timbo
Dallas Keuchel: top 20 pitcher? ERA under 3?

1:54
Paul Sporer: Not top 20 for me. But I really like him. I’m reluctant to really project guys for sub-3.00, but I can see a 3.10-3.20 the rest of the way.

1:55
Comment From Biggy
Keeper league, I get Crush Davis, Hosmer, and Stras for Harper and Mad Bum. Bad trade for me, or the worst trade?

1:56
Paul Sporer: It’s not BAD. I prob wouldn’t do it bc of Harper, but it’s fair enough.

1:56
Comment From Mike P
Should I trade my Phil Hughes for his Chase Anderson?

1:56
Paul Sporer: No

1:56
Comment From Joe
Castellanos and Headley are making me a sad panda. Either likely to turn things around?

1:57
Paul Sporer: I think Headley will be the better fantasy asset and should get better. Casty should, too, but he’s young and still learning. Even if he gets better, he doesn’t have the pop of Headley

1:57
Comment From Art Vandelay
You’d put Ziegler at higher odds than Delgado for the closer role?

1:58
Paul Sporer: I’m a Delgado fan, always have been, but yes. Ziegler’s component numbers are trash, but he’s done it before and for this team so I think he’d get the first shot

I have Tulo in a deep, twenty team league with Seager waiting in the wings. I have fairly sizable holes at 2B (Odor struggling) and CF (no player projected to have that eligibility next year). Who are some guys you would target in a Tulo deal, or should I just hold onto Tulo?

1:59

Chris Young Velo is WAY up this year, along with Sw STR. Good filler til he gets hurt (again) or cut ties now before it gets ugly?

2:02

Any closer targets for my Lynn or Hammel that you would entertain in 12t 5×5?

2:09
Comment From Bart
Pick up CC from waivers based on his last pitching performance? Showing signs of improvement?

2:10
Paul Sporer: No. I don’t know why people keep recommending him, tbh. Too much reliance on K and BB numbers. I love those two numbers as much as anyone, but they don’t tell EVERYTHING. Best K-BB numbers don’t mean shit when you give up 1.2 HR/9 as he has the last four years, incl. 2.0 and 1.6 the last two

2:10
Comment From Cheech
Kemp had a pretty good year last season and looked good in ST….any reason for optimism?

2:12
Paul Sporer: Sure because we’ve seen him be great, but there were big concerns related to his health coming into the year and his proponents acted like those went away when he had a .900-something OPS through the first 15 games. I’m not targeting him, but I’d hold if I had him

2:12
Comment From Mr. Wonderful
For all the talk about the BoSox pitchers…Porcello has been nice lately and he doesn’t kill your numbers. You like him?

More broadly, do you have a method for comparing pitcher/hitter values for trading purposes? Thanks for the great work here and on the casts!

2:13
Paul Sporer: No, it’s really case-by-case basis. Like I’ve said a couple times, I usually prefer the hitter when things are close. But trading is sooooo contextual that it’s impossible to have hard-n-fast rules

I have a stacked outfield in my keep forever league (keep 18) and want to deal from a strength for pitching. Who would you shop first from Jones, Heyward, Betts, Polanco, Pederson?

2:15
Paul Sporer: Well you want to get something substantial, so start with Jones and Pederson. Betts will still be VERY enticing. No one is going to pay much for Heyward right now.

2:15
Comment From Jack
Who would you rather have ROS: Jimmy Nelson or Phil Hughes? Can either approach a 3.50ERA or a decent WHIP?

2:15
Paul Sporer: Hughes. I was pretty keen on him coming into the year. I think Hughes can def be 3.50 w/good WHIP

2:15
Comment From Jon
Everyone outside of Pittsburgh has it wrong re: Kang. There’s just no chance he displaces Mercer. Pirates love his defense and value that above all at short. Kang replacing Harrison at 3rd though seems eminently possible.

2:16
Paul Sporer: Defense can only save you for so long. Mercer has been a HUGE negative with the bat and they aren’t hitting as a club. I don’t think Mercer is as entrenched as you believe. I hear you re: Harrison and mention him in my upcoming piece, but his contract secures his spot more than Mercer’s D

Will James Paxton ever exhibit control?

2:18
Paul Sporer: He did upon arrival for a short time and then for decent part of last year, but it’s always been a struggle of his. It often is the last thing to come together for a young arm.

2:18
Comment From August Xander
Xander’s still a baby, but will he be a more successful baby going forward? What’s an AL sp/rp comp?

2:18
Paul Sporer: He could be, but it’s looking like he might just not be ready yet.

2:18
Comment From Tradition
Deep thought of the day — why do umpires hold their hands up like a blackjack dealer to signal a timeout? All other sports use a hand “T”

2:18
Paul Sporer: LOL, no idea

2:19
Comment From hscer
What makes me upset about Kluber coming out is they totally would have sent him back out for the 288th-ever no-hitter, but didn’t send him out for the 6th-ever 20 strikeout game.

2:19
Paul Sporer: That’s fair.

Shut your face John

Started Collmenter on Monday (1.1 IP 9 ER) because of his Sunday matchup with the Phillies (weekly lineup adjustments). Please let everyone laugh at me so I don’t make this mistake again.

Votto…top __ 1b this year?

2:19
Paul Sporer: 10 for sure. But top 5 upside. (definitely top 5 in OBP lgs)

2:19
Comment From SporerFAN
Harvey straight up for Tulo?

2:19
Paul Sporer: That’s completely fair.

2:19
Comment From Moonlight Graham
Kluber or Cole in a keeper?

2:20
Paul Sporer: Ooooh. REALLY close. Cole might actually have a higher ceiling… weird to say when the other guy is a reigning Cy Young winner

2:20
Comment From Maxamuz

Not true, I also have a man-crush on Minton.

2:21
Comment From Bart
Which trade seems more fair: AJ Pollock for B Hamilton or Pollock for Wacha?

2:21
Paul Sporer: The latter, though if Wacha starts K’ing regularly, he’s too much for Pollock

2:21
Comment From Minty
$3 Thor or $1 Rodon for next 3 years? Inflate $1 per year

2:22
Paul Sporer: I mean, that’s super-close. Being in NL cancels out the price difference. So it’s really just preference, IMO. Young pitchers, though, man. Not that fun to keep, tbh. SOOO much risk

2:22
Comment From Josh G
What do you expect from Jake Marisnick ROS? Can he reach 10/30?

2:23
Paul Sporer: Yeah that’s totally possible. But it might be with a .250 AVG rest of way. 10 Ks in first 23 games… 10 Ks in his last 8. The latter is more believable, tbh, given his career

2:24
Comment From Puig for Strasburg???
Mauer,Axford and Harrison for Strasburg, too much??

2:24
Paul Sporer: Not enough

Comment From Jeff in T.O
I got Kluber and DJ Lemaihue for Arrietta and Devon Travis after Arrietta’s start on Tuesday and before Kluber’s gem last night. Awesome sauce!

2:24
Paul Sporer: Strong. I think you won the deal, but not resoundingly. Fair trade, IMO

2:24
Comment From Jay
Seager gets called up before September? Y/N?

2:24
Paul Sporer: Where is he going to play? They can’t play the guys they have now.

2:24
Comment From Quadrangular
Hey Paul – great work on the pods and thanks for the chat! Personal question: what are we doing with Greene in a 14 teamer? Hold and spot-start?

2:25
Paul Sporer: He’s still in the lineup for most of my leagues. Def holding in a 14-teamer

2:25
Comment From Snarfle
Is ISO how you personally measure power? It seems good enough but imperfect (namely because singles bring it down, regardless of their authority).

2:26
Paul Sporer: Any one stat is imperfect. Gotta use ’em in concert.

2:26
Comment From Jon
Are you more concerned about Tulo or Desmond ROS? Or will they both end up being ok?

2:26
Paul Sporer: Desi if I have to pick, but think both will be OK

2:26
Comment From Chris
Lots of Quintana talk today.. would you trade him straight up for Blackmon? Quintana is my number 6 at most and could use an OF to help fill the gap for Puig

2:26
Paul Sporer: Yes I would. That’d be a great return for Q and I think he’s worthy of it

2:27
Comment From Ryan
A guy in my league is trying to talk me into taking Cozart in exchange for Huston Street. I’ve got Kang, Owings and Escobar trying to figure out my SS position. I should target better for Street right? Maybe try to package him?

2:27
Paul Sporer: Yes, get more. Your SS are better than Cozart already

2:27
Comment From jv
I know you aren’t a fan of Clay Buchholz but how much in a $100 FAAB budget would you spend if you needed a K heavy starter? We allow $0 bids

2:28
Paul Sporer: Must be shallow if he’s out there. I dunno, $15? He’ll have great starts, but I don’t think he’ll avoid the implosion start every once in a while to ensure that his ERA is always worse than his FIP

2:28
Comment From Chuck Wagon
Enjoy your analysis. Redraft lottery ticket – Guerrero or Kang? Doing OK in saves, but could also spec on Ziegler or Delgado.

2:29
Paul Sporer: Guerrero. Yeah I think Ziegs gets the shot. I subscribe to draft skills not roles, but if you really need SVs, i think he gets the first shot. If it’s more luxury, then go for Delgado on a spec

2:29
Comment From george
woud you start Kelly o Hernandez tonight?

2:29
Paul Sporer: I would never start Roberto Hernandez

Paul Sporer: Hmmm… personal preference? Both mentioned in upcoming article

Any chance for a Napoli resurgence?

2:31
Paul Sporer: Yeah. Had some rotten months last year, too. At least gets back to that level

2:31
Comment From Ampersand
Marisnick on the WW, drop mesoraco to pick him up? Not sure he’ll catch again this season

2:32
Paul Sporer: Hmm, you can do that. I’m worried about Meso, too. But I’m not super-high on Marisnick. He’s gonna be an AVG deficiency as his early K rate gains appear to have been a nice run more than a skills change

2:32
Comment From Johnny
Is Anthony Rizzo really this good?

2:32
Paul Sporer: Yes. Was amazing last year, too

2:32
Comment From James "Sawyer" Ford
Could you rank Wacha, Shelby Miller, Hamels, Archer, and Arrieta ROS?

2:33
Paul Sporer: http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… … Archer would probably be the top of tier 3

Is Grichuk going to be fantasy relevant? I think he has huge potential.

2:35
Paul Sporer: Maybe. He’s got some potential, but I wouldnt’ say it’s huge.

2:35
Comment From Thorn
Is Cishek hurt or does he just suck now?

2:35
Paul Sporer: Dunno if he’s hurt. But he’s a mess right now. That’s just the volatility of RPs.

2:35
Comment From Andrew
Buying Kipnis? I need a 2B. Also would you drop Yelich for Souza?

2:35
Paul Sporer: Meh. I’ve never been a fan. Kipnis just seems to love May. His career and the fanfare surrounding really kinda boils down to some good Mays

Miggy may have been reading this chatroll. After posting that Dee Gordon led him in Slugging %, he hit 2 straight bombs, lifting his SLG 50 points and passing Gordon. Dee still is ahead of Stanton.
