Player Pages Update
I’ve made some changes to the player pages:
– The change to the header allowed us to remove the sidebar and increase the width of the stat boxes. I personally think they look less cramped and now there’s room to add more.
– MLB Trade Rumors links specific to that player are now available on each page.
– Facebook like and a universal “share” button is now available on all the player pages.
– We’re now getting all the latest RotoWire news for every player and no longer just a small sampling of players.
I think that’s about it, for now. There may be some future changes depending on how these are received.

Completely agree. Change can be good, but I prefer the old layout.
Gotta agree with Dick. All the Rotowire, THT, SBN and MLBTR stuff all closely together just completely overwhems me. Plus, I liked that I didn’t have to scroll so far to get to the stats, and now even the dashboard doesn’t show up on the page when first loading.
Put Rotowire and MLBTR where the 300×250 is, and dump the 300×250 down to the right of the “Batted Ball” section and feed in THT/SBN below that.
Personally, I like it. The article should have been called “No More Pop-Ups!”
I like what the stats lines look like when I get to them. Not a fan of all the stuff at the top, but it might grow on me. Can’t think of a way to have all of that and still get that clean look for the stats and graphs.
At first, I thought it was unattractive, but after a couple searches, found it somewhat interesting. More than anything, I don’t really know. Get used to it before you criticize!
Agreed — makes my head hurt. Couldn’t you just put the news links on its own tab? I shouldn’t have to scroll down a full page just to see the player’s stat dashboard.
Ok, good feedback. I’ll have to think some more about this.
I agree, a bit crowded and busy… if you close your eyes and open them, what is the first thing your eyes focus on? …It isn’t the player’s name, and that’s probably the most important thing on the page. I find the black headers above the news feeds to be distracting.
Thanks for the update. I like the wider columns for the stats, my “Custom” stats are numerous and squished in the old layout.
Having done a lot of UI work at work lately, I’ll give some feedback.
Eyes are immediately drawn to the HBT, SB Nation and MLB Trade Rumors images, which kind of sucks since I’m there for the stats.
The stats themselves start 600 pixels from the top of the window, so on my laptop (768 height), I’m going to need to scroll just to see “Custom”.
I still prefer to access FanGraphs content more than external content. So putting those links in the middle of the external links makes them much less prominent than they were before.
Maybe it’s possible to start the right-side column below the “Custom” stats, so that can be as wide as the screen? Or put all the external links as it’s own row between “Custom” and “Standard”? I know you have to get the ad somewhere prominent, but I’d rather scroll for links to HBT or RotoWire news than scroll for stats.
Hope that helps, just one opinion though!
If they were the same color as the webpage it would help. The bright white makes them stick out too much. Otherwise it’s convenient to have all the sources relating to the player right there.
Any way you can add a button to view more Fangraph articles written about that player instead of just the last three?
I like the news updates but perhaps moving them to the bottom of the page would be better. I’d imagine when most people are clicking on the profiles they’re looking for the stats first, and everything else second.
