The FanGraphs NYC Live Discussion Gets Even Better
Last week, we gave you an in depth preview of our first live event, which will be held on Saturday, August 7th in Manhattan. It was already shaping up to be a great event, but now it’s getting even better.
We’ve now added three additional guests to the roster, all of whom should add an interesting perspective to the discussion.
Jon Sciambi, currently an announcer for ESPN Radio and formerly a broadcaster for both the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves, will join us to share his thoughts on baseball, statistical analysis, and translating these numbers into a form that can be digested by the more casual fan. He’ll offer a unique view from someone who understands and appreciates the kinds of metrics used here at FanGraphs, but also is well aware of the need to package intelligent analysis in a way that can be consumed by people who are used to BA, HR, and RBI.
Matthew Cerrone, founder and owner of MetsBlog.com, and one of the more successful baseball bloggers on the web. He’s seen his site grow into one of the largest team-specific baseball sites on the internet, and his partnership with SNY.tv has blurred the lines between new media and old media. He has experience as a hobbyist blogger and a full-time baseball writer, and will be able to share his thoughts on the challenges of the two differing roles. Oh, and he might also have an opinion or two about the team that plays in Queens.
Sky Kalkman of Beyond The Box Score will also be joining us to share his thoughts on sabermetrics and where this type of analysis is heading. As a blogger who has been around for a while and worn a few different hats, Sky will bring his own take on the internet baseball community and where it should head in the future.
These three will join the likes of Will Leitch, Mitchel Lichtman, Alex Speier, Michael Silverman, Jonah Keri, the entire gang from River Ave Blues, and a collection of FanGraphs authors to offer up a wide variety of opinions on the game.
Additionally, we’re going to host a game-watching party for attendees to gather at a local watering hole and view that afternoon’s Boston-New York match-up together. Those who make it to the event will be invited to join us for several more hours of fun later in the afternoon.

Any chance, a la ted.com, we get short videos of the event over the next couple of weeks? The ticket price of TED’s yearly event have increased dramatically over the past couple of years, yet most speeches are shown for free on their website over time. People will still pay to go to the event and us Joes in San Francisco will still get to see all the nerd awesomeness eventually. Pretty Please 🙂 If not for free, could you put it under the second opinion section?
Has anyone heard Sciambi call a baseball game for ESPN this year? I know he also does collegiate athletics, but I cannot recall a single instance of him broadcasting an MLB contest. As a Braves fan it’s been brutal to go from Boog to Chip “fisted” Caray…
I think he does Sunday nights with Soup (or at least did so at times in the past), but I can’t specifically recall whether I heard him on there this year… Wiki says he’s the lead guy for Sunday nights this year.
Boog is a big-time presence on ESPN Radio, even if he’s doing a few fewer TV games. Suggest muting TV announcers on whatever big national game you happen to be watching, and tuning in to hear Sciambi instead.

Sounds like fun! Of course, all of the real baseball is on the west coast, so it should be held there.

While you may or may not agree with his opinions on baseball or his writing skill, the man has created one of the top baseball blogs on the web. He’s one of the few credentialed bloggers and knows a great deal about how to develop a successful blog, which should certainly be interesting to hear for many of the attendees, me being one of them.
Please. He has credentials because he was the first to claim the Metsblog name and the Mets are one of the stupidest organizations in baseball. I doubt there are many other organizations in sports that have given credentials to sports radio callers with blogs like the Mets have.

Like him or not, he turned a hobby into a full-time job. A job all of us want. There’s a place in baseball for everyone – not just us Fangraphs nerds.
Just because he has turned it into a full time job doesnt mean he’s any good.
But they aren’t going for quality as much as quantity at this event.

LOL… At least he hates the Yankees. If he was a Yankee fan he’d be the absolute worst sports radio personality in history.

We didn’t have an answer.
The event will be recorded in some fashion. How that will be released is still to be determined.
I love Sciambi as a broadcaster. He’s the guy that had that little tiff with Chipper Jones last year about first pitch fastballs and how Chipper should maybe lay off them more. He loves to try and explain some of the more basic metrics to whatever color man is with him in the booth, and I must say he does about as good a job as one can hope for. (keep in mind 99% of the time the color analysts are former players who wouldn’t know OPS from a hole in their head). I think Sciambi and Vasgergian are our generations (25 – 35 year olds) top play by play guys.
Ugh, espn sucks. Why bother including them, are you going to be discussing the WAR impact of players getting caught cheating on their wives?
Should I wear my Chipper jersey just to get under Cerrone’s skin?
