The FanGraphs Site Guide: 2019 Edition
Happy Opening Day everyone! In this post, I’m going to tell you about all the wonderful, possibly hidden, stat things you can find on the website. This is for those of you who may be joining us for the first time, or for those of you who might be returning to the site after doing whatever it is people do when not thinking about baseball every waking moment.
Player Pages
The Main Player Page – The main player pages include hundreds of stats on each player. Player pages have real time data, season and daily projections, and basically everything you’d ever wanted to know about how a player performed.
Graphs – Visualize how a player has performed over time! You can see breakdowns by season, game, age, and so on. The combinations are nearly endless.
Splits – Splits pages come in three varieties: static splits, the splits tool, and pitch type splits. The static ones contain all the pre-compiled splits. The splits tool is where you can slice and dice your way to the most esoteric of baseball stats. And the pitch type splits break down each pitch a player has thrown or has seen, and provides performance metrics on those pitches.
Game Logs – These are stats for every individual game a player has played during the regular season. You can also narrow the date range to get stat totals for how a player performed between two specific dates.
Spray Charts – See where each ball landed on the field, and even compare two players side by side.
Heat Maps – See the strike zone broken down in a 5×5, 10×10, or 100×100 kernel density estimate grid. Filter on date, counts, handedness, and pitch type to build the exact heatmap you’ve always wanted.
LeaderBoards
The Original FanGraphs Leaderboard – The easiest way to see where players rank at any stat on a league wide basis, and include a variety of filtering and customization options. If you have never used the FanGraphs leaderboards, it could explain the emptiness that you feel inside, or it could be entirely unrelated.
The Split Leaderboards – Just like the player pages splits tool, but for all players. It’s magical.
THE BOARD – Our newly revamped prospect board includes all our scouting information from Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel, combined with our minor league leaderboards. There is literally nothing else like it.
The Season Stat Grid – A specialized leaderboard that allows you to see multiple players over multiple years, and how they rank and have progressed in a particular stat. If you’ve ever needed to make a pivot table on our leaderboards, we’ve done it for you.
The Combined War Leaderboard – Want to know how much WAR a player has had in both batting and pitching? Now you know.
Live Data
Win Probability – Each and every game’s win probability is calculated in real time and plotted on a chart. While that chart may look exactly like your roller coaster of emotions during that 18 inning game, it’s also math.
Lineups – We have lineups for all the games as soon as we have them.
Game Projections – We project the winner of each and every game based on, among other things, projections, depth charts, starting pitchers, and lineups.
Probable Starters Leaderboards – Each day we create a custom leaderboard of probable starters, and as lineups fill in, we add the batters too.
Live FanGraphs Leaderboards – Combine our leaderboards with live data to see where players are ranked immediately. Why wait until tomorrow?
Live Daily Leaderboard – Get the most relevant stats in real time. Paul Sporer wouldn’t stop bugging us to make this thing, so it’s probably useful.
Team Pages
The team pages gather data from all over the site and combine them into an elegant dashboard for a single team. They include depth charts, standings, projections, playoff odds, leaderboards, injuries, pitcher usage, prospect information, and more.
Future Looking Stuff
Season Long Projections – We have a variety of season long projections, including Steamer, ZiPS, The BAT, and ATC, three of which are updated on a daily basis.
Projected Standings – Based on a combination of ZiPS and Steamer projections, we provide updated standings projections each and every day. These are used to power the….
Playoff Odds – Want to know your teams chance of making the playoffs? Great! Our computer will spit out some numbers for you. Just remember that we don’t personally hate your team, but our computer is merciless.
There’s even more stuff at FanGraphs, but these are the highlights. Everything can be accessed through the top menu. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us through the contact form. And if you like what you see, you are encouraged to become a member. With your support, we can continue to bring you all this great content and more.

So quick thing: Sometimes, I want to be able to look at some of the older articles when I search a player – the new search system effectively blocks that.
Is there a plan to revamp the search system so I can see some of the older stuff?
Thanks
Maybe we have the recency on our article search weighted a little too heavily. I’ll take a look at that.
Another suggestion: An option to maybe sort by date might be helpful as well.
THanks!
