Updated Menu Bar
Last night we rolled out some changes to the menu bar in an attempt to improve navigation on the site:

If there’s something that you would like to have quicker access to, that isn’t already in the menu bar, please let us know!
If you don’t see the menus correctly, please hit refresh on your browser.
David Appelman is the creator of FanGraphs.
Looks fantastic
Doesn’t look like the menus render correctly in Chrome (ver 12.0.742.100)
Nevermind. It seems to work now. Forth time refreshing the page rendered all the colors correctly.
The pop-up menus are rendering against a dark-grey background in Firefox (4.0.1). But I like the new content on them.
Just a heads up, refresh your browser if you’re not seeing the menu as pictured above. Sometimes it will not automatically update stylesheets.
Thank you, that has fixed it.
Huge improvement. Thanks guys.
When I click on specific articles they are slid to the right about 5 inches, causing a horizontal scroll-bar. Do you have some tag in the menubar html causing this. Started happening today. I’m using IE 7, fwiw.
Should be fixed now for IE7.
IE7? WHAT?! PITCHFORKS, EVERYONE!
Don’t blame me… I’m at work 😉
It is highly effective, and streamlined, great work naturally.
The scoreboard drop is a nice idea to for quick peeks…
The way the way the menus drop and line up with the menu name that they drop from isn’t consistent and becomes visually noisy. The left menu’s drop aligned left, while the menus towards the right, because they don’t have room have room drop with inconsistent alignments… It would be nice to see some sort of consistency established, although i’m not quite what the ideal solution would be for this type of layout. Maybe if you just have every menu drop justified to the right instead since there’s room underneath the Fangraphs logo for the first two menus to fit? I’m not sure if that sacrifices intuition/functionality for aesthetics, but it would at least be consistent.
Also… The old way of having that thicker green line/bar underline the menu selection that you float over while the menu drops, seems obsolete now that a much larger and more vertical formatted menu drops (instead of the old way of a horizontal menu dropping). To visually tie together the drop menu to the menu name that you are floating over, why not have the menu name that’s being floated over change color to the color of the menu that’s being dropped? That would correlate the menu name with the menu being dropped pretty clearly. Have the menu name box background switch to white as you float over it with the text color switching to either the dark grey that the menu name box background was in, or the green that you use for the menu headings?
Just thought it would be fun to critique a bit with some stuff off the top of my head… nice work
Thanks. I think maybe aligning the menus that can’t be aligned to the button on the left, and have them just aligned on the right might make things look a little bit better.
I do like the idea of having the button turn white. I’ll see what I can do!
Thanks!
An off-topic request, when looking at the career splits pages for players, would it be possible to have the row of categories at the top (ie. 2B, HR, wOBA) scroll down as we scroll down? It’s sometimes difficult to remember what stat you’re looking at for a guy who’s got many years of data.
With the new layout, if I navigate to a team page and then type in a player name in the search bar and press enter, it simply returns me to the team page. I can type in a search and then click the search icon and have it perform correctly. I do not recall this occurring before, but I could be wrong.
For example, I was looking at the Orioles and thought “How is Xavier Avery doing”. I typed in “Xavier Avery” and pressed “Enter”. I was returned to the Orioles page. If I type in “Xavier Avery” and click the search icon, it successfully takes me to Xavier Avery’s player page.
This also seems to happen from the Major League Leaders pages (but not the Minor League Leaders pages).
This should be fixed now!
Thanks. The new menus are very nice aesthetically and make everything much more accessible.
Any chance for including wildcard standings at the bottom?
sexy
Any chance of changing the page background color? The current yellowish color is so depressing. Why not make it white?
This is just great stuff guys. You continue to provide us with new reasons to visit this site all the time. Thank you so much.
At the scoreboard, it has the game and then the inning (or Final). I’d love to see the current LI, so I can easily see which game I should jump into.
Where are the pythagorean standings?
Not Menu Bar related, but I would LOVE to have PAs listed in the Advanced section of stats, in addition to Standard. Not having some kind of reference point for sample size makes it necessary to constantly refer to back to one section for one stat.
I’d love to get wOBA splits “vs L” and “vs R” included under the LEADERS page.
I find myself constantly checking individual player page SPLITS, and having to write down numbers to compare. It’d be really nice to see who has performed the best hitting against Lefties, and who has hit the best against Righties.
We have the splits leaderboards, if you just change the split, vs L / vs R is a little scroll down the list.

Or is that not what you’re looking for.
on the subject of splits leaders… is it possible to look at lefty/righty splits over the previous 30 days, or over May? (i.e. 2 layers of splits?)
I’m trying to figure out if Shin-Soo Choo is starting to improve this season vs lefties.
When you are looking up a player, say Yunel Escobar, it would be nice if after a few letters, there was a drop down box of players’ names starting with “Yun” so you don’t have to type out the whole thing. Also, if I’m gonna look up Jordan Zimmermann, I have to decide between some obscure minor leaguer from 10 years ago and the one in the majors now – it’d be nice if you could favor the more recent player there (I recognize that that one’s tougher to do, but the first should be manageable).
i cant really access leaders/team foprum./glossary unless im on the home page. there’s an advertisement on player pages instead of the win probability on the home page. when i scroll over those it pops up behind the ad so i cant really access anything unless i go to the home page first.
Which browser are you using? I just put in a change which should fix the majority of cases, let me know if you’re still seeing issues.
