Want to Write for FanGraphs?
We’re pleased to announce today that FanGraphs is now hiring, and we’re looking for talented writers with interesting things to say about the sport. While this is FanGraphs and an analytical bent will certainly be of good use here, we also employ Carson Cistulli – writers of all shades are welcome to apply.
If you’re a writer looking for a paid, part-time position and a chance to show the world what you’ve got, drop us a line at wanted@fangraphs.com with the subject line “FanGraphs Writer Application – 2011” (note – this is very helpful to us. Please do this.) Resumes and/or samples of your prior writings are strongly encouraged. Applications will be accepted for positions with FanGraphs, RotoGraphs, and NotGraphs, though Carson suggests that NotGraphs applicants should “have a working knowledge both of the WAR leaderboards and the collected works of PG Wodehouse.”
Strong applicants will be able to write in a clear and concise manner, provoke interesting discussion with original thoughts, and work within a regular schedule to produce content on a consistent basis. A solid understanding of how to work with the data here on the site is also going to be necessary. If that describes you, feel free to drop us a line, and we’ll review your application and see if you’d be a good fit to join the site.

Wow, your eclectic taste of well-known, widely read authors certainly wins the day.
I never made the claim that these were not well-known authors. (I’m not some kind of literary elitist douchebag after all.) I’m just stating that they were diverse. I don’t exactly feel like Faulkner and Heller fit in well together side-by-side on a normal basis.
I quite enjoy the stylings of Suess, Kierkegaard, Cistulli, and Thoreau. Am I cool?
I read J.K. Rowling, R.L. Stine, K.A. Applegate, George, R.R. Martin, Gustav Meyrink, Haruki Murakami, Nikos Kazantzakis and William Hope Hodgson. You guys aren’t as cool as me.

Ryan, when you say George are you referring to George R.R. Martin and the comma was accidental, or are you attempting to say that you enjoy the works of any random George, because that will take the cake in this battle of eclecticism. My personal favorite George by the way is the curious one.

Unfortunately, it was a typo. George R.R. Martin is the absolute ONLY George I read. Unless Costanza ends up writing a book, I will never read another George.

In my time as an appreciator of graphs (both of the Fan and Not variety, not so much of the Roto kind) I have developed a degree of a man crush on Mr. Cistulli.
If the process did not require applications and\or resumes, both of which require too much effort for me, I would write for little to no money, and instead for the joy of being able to consider myself a peer of Carson, and the thought that maybe some day i could enjoy a meal and an adult beverage while cracking wise on topics unimaginable even in my imagination.
If only I hadnt smoked away all of my ambition in my younger years….

If by stars you are referring to the illicit (depending on your locale) substance of which i used to partake in, the objective pipe if you will, none more for me.
However if by stars you are referring to my dreams of a licit, though elusive bromance with the likes of of one Carson Cistulli (or Greg Maddux, Jason Schwartzman, or AC Newman for that matter), there is a reason the phrase is reach for the stars. According to my elementary school degree in star science they are really high in the sky and pretty much unreachable without futuristic or Alien technologies.

Yes I do, except that despite my interest in writing, I haven’t practiced at all, and as a result I have no real skills to bring to the table, nor do I have a resume. Why do I gotta be so lazy?
I imagine writing samples of the baseball variety are the most useful, but could one conceivably showcase whatever writing ability they might have via a sample or two not ostensibly applicable to the sport, in addition to submitted pieces that do apply to the relevant subject matter?
(Asked the guy who probably won’t bother anyway. And besides, that was an awful sentence, wasn’t it?)
When is the deadline for this?
The deadline is from now until they hire someone.
Fangraphs should probably hire someone who’s a Jay specialist and have them only write daily articles about the Jays, because all the articles about the Jays are significantly more interesting, promote more debate, and thus bring more people to the site than the majority of other articles. To further this point, the site should have a JaysGraphs section. If only “Community Research” wasn’t already in blue text, this would be perfect!
I’m holding out for BrettGardnerGraphs.
