Yeoman’s Work: Episode 3

I’m wading into the gaming and streaming space with Yeoman’s Work, a lo-fi, multimedia presentation that follows my pursuit of a championship in the baseball simulator, Diamond Mind Baseball, paired with single-camera footage from my baseball video archives. Below is Episode 3, which features my team’s sputtering bullpen situation, as well as video of prominent recent draftees and their undrafted peers who, by default, are now perched at the top of the 2023 class.

Both DMB’s gameplay and most of my video archive are very quiet, low-sensory experiences without music or crowd noise, and I think this will appeal to those of you who enjoy Baseball Sounds, as they are front and center in the footage. If this tone appeals to you, my “musical influences” in this department (i.e. the non-FanGraphs Twitch streams I watch on my own time) are Kenji Egashira’s and Luis Scott-Vargas’ live Magic: The Gathering content, Kate Stark’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds streams, and Kathleen De Vere’s pirate radio show, Brave New Faves.

Hi Eric,

I have 3 questions based on your series so far that I would be grateful if you can point me in the right direction (I have googled a bit but perhaps I don’t know the right search terms):

1. How the heck do you get a stable netplay connection in your DMB league? Mine, we can only netplay over a VPN. Do you do port forwarding, or what?

2. In the last episode, I think it was instructs, there was a black box (?) on the infield, in front of the plate. What is that?

3. Can you suggest a primer for people like me, who are interested in HS showcases and instructional leagues, but don’t grasp the rules? Like, for example, in the current episode, you lead off with HS showcase footage where I infer the batter gets 3 strikes but can watch unlimited balls (with a baserunner awarded every 4 balls)? Plus, Romo threw out an attempted steal at second, but there were 4 outs total in the half-inning, so do there have to be 3 batters who make an out, or…is it different in each event, or was that an umpire’s mistake? I’m just trying to follow along. Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Finally, I am sure you’re about to get really busy, but if you still make these DMB/footage videos in the future, you have at least 1 guaranteed viewer/commenter. I love them!

We do port forwarding. The two components I can remember are 32158 I think for the proper port, and making sure your router directs traffic to your pc. I can netplay from my Win7 machine, not from my Win10 laptop, not sure why.

Thanks a lot for the advice – truly! I’m shocked how little there is online for DMB in this regard. Seemingly everyone has problems with net managing. I’ve found inviting someone to my VPN works and also have no idea why.

Much appreciated and happy netplay!
