2015 ZiPS Projections – Arizona Diamondbacks

After having typically appeared in the very hallowed pages of Baseball Think Factory, Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections have been released at FanGraphs the past couple years. The exercise continues this offseason. Below are the projections for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Szymborski can be found at ESPN and on Twitter at @DSzymborski.

Other Projections: Atlanta / Chicago AL / Colorado / Detroit / Houston / Los Angeles AL / Los Angeles NL / Miami / Milwaukee / Minnesota / New York NL / Oakland / San Diego / San Francisco / St. Louis / Tampa Bay / Washington.

Batters
Offensively, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has evolved into a broadly skilled weapon, reproducing not only the above-average home-run and walk rates that he posted in the minors, but also recording above-average BABIP and base-running figures. His projection for 2015 suggests he’ll continue doing all these sorts of things.

Nor is Goldschmidt alone in his hitting abilities. David Peralta, A.J. Pollock, Yasmany Tomas, and Mark Trumbo are all starters forecast to produce above-average offensive lines. For all them, with the exception of Pollock, the question is less of offensive — and more of defensive — ability. There’s a real possibility, supported by ZiPS, that each is occupying a place on the defensive spectrum probably more demanding than the actual skills warrant.

Pitchers
Only two of Arizona’s top-five pitchers by projected WAR — Josh Collmenter and Rubby de la Rosa — actually appear within the depth-chart image below. The best of that group, Patrick Corbin (2.4 WAR), is rehabbing from a Tommy John procedure until midseason, probably. Right-hander Chase Anderson, who actually recorded about a win in 21 starts with the club in 2014, appears to have only an outside chance at earning a rotation spot. Aaron Blair, meanwhile — barring unusual circumstances — will almost certainly begin the season in the high minors.

If one were looking to strike an optimistic note with regard to the club’s starters and their underwhelming forecasts, one could make the argument that, while the projections themselves are low, that those figures represent only the most likely outcome for each of the club’s respective pitchers and that a number of the pitchers themselves offer a wider range of possible outcomes than is typical. de la Rosa and Allen Webster, for example, have both exhibited elite velocity and above-average strikeout rates in the minors and are perhaps destined for greater things than their brief/recent major-league resumes suggests.

Bench/Prospects
In addition to Blair, the D-backs employ two of baseball’s top pitching prospects, Archie Bradley and Braden Shipley. Neither, according to ZiPS, is likely to offer even average run prevention at the moment, but might be relied upon to produce at a rate better than replacement level. Among field players, Ender Inciarte actually receives one of the club’s top projections (576 PA, 2.3 WAR). Despite a lack of power, his contact ability and defensive acumen might ultimately allow him to earn a more significant role on the team.

Depth Chart
Below is a rough depth chart for the present incarnation of the D-backs, with rounded projected WAR totals for each player. For caveats regarding WAR values see disclaimer at bottom of post. Click to embiggen image.

Disclaimer: ZiPS projections are computer-based projections of performance. Performances have not been allocated to predicted playing time in the majors — many of the players listed above are unlikely to play in the majors at all in 2014. ZiPS is projecting equivalent production — a .240 ZiPS projection may end up being .280 in AAA or .300 in AA, for example. Whether or not a player will play is one of many non-statistical factors one has to take into account when predicting the future.

Players are listed with their most recent teams unless Dan has made a mistake. This is very possible as a lot of minor-league signings are generally unreported in the offseason.

ZiPS is projecting based on the AL having a 3.93 ERA and the NL having a 3.75 ERA.

Players that are expected to be out due to injury are still projected. More information is always better than less information and a computer isn’t what should be projecting the injury status of, for example, a pitcher with Tommy John surgery.

Regarding ERA+ vs. ERA- (and FIP+ vs. FIP-) and the differences therein: as Patriot notes here, they are not simply mirror images of each other. Writes Patriot: “ERA+ does not tell you that a pitcher’s ERA was X% less or more than the league’s ERA. It tells you that the league’s ERA was X% less or more than the pitcher’s ERA.”

Both hitters and pitchers are ranked by projected zWAR — which is to say, WAR values as calculated by Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those which appear in full release of ZiPS. Finally, Szymborski will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on depth chart to produce projected team WAR.

I keep looking at O’Brien’s line and thinking Gosewich and Hernandez are not very big obstacles and that maybe he is the reason why Dave Stewart thought he could trade Montero. I guess the question is whether O’Brien will ever be able to field the position at the MLB level.
