2025 ZiPS Projections: Cincinnati Reds
For the 21st consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Cincinnati Reds.
Batters
In return for their mini-free agent spree after nearly making the playoffs in 2023, the Cincinnati Reds dropped five wins, finishing 2024 with a 77-85 record. It wasn’t as bad as it looked — the team improved its Pythagorean record by five wins compared to the year before — but it felt lousy that only Nick Martinez really shined among their signings. Elly De La Cruz did break out in a massive way — he was a legitimate MVP contender for much of the season — but Matt McLain’s torn labrum and rib injury kept him away from the action.
A look at the depth chart graphic makes it pretty clear where the Reds are strong: Even with some regression toward the mean, De La Cruz is the team’s most important player, and if healthy, McLain will upgrade second base. Continuing the up-the-middle strength is Jose Trevino, recently acquired from the Yankees; he and Tyler Stephenson give the Reds an excellent tandem behind the plate. TJ Friedl in center gets a less exciting projection, but he’s still perfectly serviceable as a starter, and he’s the worst projected player of the up-the-middle quartet.
But while the rest of the lineup isn’t disastrous, it is a giant bucket of “meh.” The Reds have apparently resolved their third base logjam in the worst possible way: all the contenders basically were either disappointing or injured. The bats at first base, designated hitter, and in right field are in the bottom third of the ZiPS projections. And even with a bounce-back projected for Spencer Steer after his 96 wRC+ in 2024, left field isn’t a shining beacon of hope either.
The other problem is that when you look at the minors, there aren’t obvious players to change things up down there. Most of the better projected players are minor league journeymen types forecast for 1 WAR, and several are minor league free agents anyway. Edwin Arroyo has the most interesting long-term projection, but he’s coming off shoulder surgery and isn’t a beefy corner outfield/first base type.
Pitchers
Hunter Greene finally put it together for a full season in 2024, a relief both to Reds fans and to me since I keep putting him on my breakout list every year. Now I can stop! I wouldn’t say that Greene is definitely in the tier of pitchers where you find guys like Zack Wheeler, but he’s probably in the next group down, starters who can theoretically put up a Cy Young-worthy season in a good year. Where the Reds once had to worry about Greene, they can probably ponder other problems now.
Martinez is a wonderfully versatile pitcher, and though not a star, the Reds can plug him in most places pretty happily, even without him being a big strikeout guy. The rest of the rotation reads as more serviceable/competent than a big part of the team. Andrew Abbott and Nick Lodolo are quietly average, and definitely useful, but there’s no big ceiling like with Greene or Rhett Lowder. ZiPS still thinks Graham Ashcraft has some upside remaining, though the computer’s come down a little compared to the last couple of seasons. And I tend to like the acquisition of Brady Singer better than ZiPS does — it worries about him maintaining his excellent HR/9 rate in Cincy.
ZiPS isn’t a fan of the bullpen at all, though it’s not as bad as the graphic suggests. Luis Mey, who has a good number of innings on the depth chart, has the worst pitching projection of anybody in the organization. ZiPS doesn’t like his command one bit, though I imagine the team won’t keep him in the big league ‘pen if this projection turns out to be accurate.
Outside of Alexis Díaz, Martinez when used in relief, and Ashcraft if he finds his way there, ZiPS finds the Reds relievers to be a lackluster mix of arms. The big exception might be Tony Santillan, who pitched very well for the big club but walked five batters per game in the minors. Still, if he continues to pitch like he did in August and September, his projection will turn around fairly quickly.
The Reds look a lot like a .500 team in 2025, but they don’t appear to be a doomed, hopeless one, which is something.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2025 due to injury, and players who were released in 2024. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Ukulele Dixieland Jazz band that only covers songs by The Smiths, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.11.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
I feel like this team could surprise if they went hard after guys who hit a lot of “doubters”, home runs that would be a homer in Cincinnati but not elsewhere. Gleyber Torres would have been perfect, but Mike Yastrzmeski and Taylor Ward would be great for them too. Adolis Garcia might be worth a flyer too.
They should just load up the corner outfield and first base with these guys where they just need a little push from their stadium.
Don’t Fraley, Steer and Candelario already kinda qualify as the “doubter” type? If we accept that a mid-market team has to skimp somewhere, I agree that paying for light-tower power would be a poor use of Reds resources. And yet, we see almost every year that GAB can only lift up a middling bat so much.
Granted, Yaz and Ward are probably a step up from middling and would improve the lineup, but I question whether investing in them would be more productive than shoring up that leaky bullpen.
Here’s what I found on Statcast in terms of the players with the most “doubter” hits, that would be a home run in 1-7 parks. Most of the players who hit a lot of doubters also hit a lot of “mostly gone” and “no-doubters” as well because they just hit the ball hard. But not all of them.
Mike Yastrzemski (19)
Shohei Ohtani (19)
Gleyber Torres (17)
Jackson Merrill (17)
Corey Seager (17)
Jarren Duran (16)
Juan Soto (16)
Luis Garcia (15)
Taylor Ward (15)
Some other guys on this list who hit fair number of doubters but not a lot of “mostly gone” homers (in other words, not someone like Vlad Jr or Ohtani or Willly Adames) are Adolis Garcia (13) and Yandy Diaz (14). In 2023 you could Josh Bell (14) to that list. In 2024 you had guys like Cedric Mullins (16), Adolis Garcia (15), and Alec Bohm (15).
This team could be a lot better if they spent their limited dollars more wisely. They’ve done some damn good development work with EDLC, McLain, and Greene are significant building blocks. And they’ve got solid supplementary pieces like Friedl, Lodolo, Abbott, and Stephenson. As a fan of an even more frugal front office, I can applaud the Reds spending money, but find myself scratching my head at signing Candy Man and Pagan. It almost feels like they’re spending money for the sake of it, regardless of team fit.
Castellini is a lot like Kendrick and Reinsdorf. They’re all meddlers in the sense that they’ll okay big jumps in payroll and then mandate slashing payroll later. (Kendrick also has an Arte Moreno type of attitude of spending money on big names that he then expects the front office to work around, but Moreno is almost certainly the biggest meddler in MLB.)
None of these owners are “cheap” all of the time but they will be cheap at very inconvenient and unpredictable times. They’ll say when it’s time to spend and when it’s time to cut. The front office has to figure out how to work within that.
The Reds have a development team that is clearly superior than the White Sox and the Angels so that helps a lot, but not as good as the D-Backs. I think you’ve got a case that the Reds should spend more wisely, but I’m not sure the front office has a choice to pick and choose the moments that work for them.
Bob Nutting is cheap all of the time.
The Reds seem to run things like I run my fantasy baseball team. Defense doesn’t matter and the only person to care about in the bullpen is the closer.
The big difference is that in your fantasy league you probably can’t move all of your third basemen to other positions
1: The Reds will have a difficult time competing if they won’t spend — meaning, allocating some $10 million+ AAV contracts to players who can plug holes on the roster. The FO has talked about running the club like the Rays of the NL. To Dan’s point, this org does not have anything like the depth and development of the Rays (although Cincy’s pitching development seems to have improved and it’s still too early to tell how Marte and CES will turn out).
2. Where the Reds *have* spent, it doesn’t seem to be part of any sort of plan beyond, “pay whoever will take cheap contracts.” A $21 million QO for a high-quality swingman/ five-and-diver like Martinez is good value. But Candelario at $15 AAV looks like Mike Moustakas 2.0. Pagan at $8 million AAV is . . . whatever? And those are the club’s three highest-paid players: a swingman, an overpaid/ ill-fitting corner infielder, and an average middle reliever.
3. What’s worrisome is that Cincy should be at least a *somewhat* attractive destination for FAs. EDLC is one of the game’s handful of most exciting players. McLain looks like a contender’s legitimate second banana. I know that ZiPS isn’t super-bullish on the Reds’ rotation, but it stands a really good chance of being one of the Majors’ 10-best for the next few years. The club shouldn’t be that far from being a 90-win roster. If those bullpen and corner IF projections don’t include some new names sometime in the next couple of weeks, it’ll be distressing. And disappointing. And typical.
Agree on 1 & 2, though none of those contracts are “bad”, at least not anchor level bad.
And yeah, 3 is weird. Legitimately can’t remember the last time the Reds signed a high end free agent that wasn’t gone a year or two later. Even during the Votto, Bruce, Phillips years every acquisition was a trade. Especially with the pitching where it it – feels like the Reds have enough high upside talent to be a pretty good staff.
Good young, controllable rotation + GABP + EDLC and McLain should be a good selling point for FA hitters.
Just a head’s up. Looks like the Bobby Witt Jr. comp for EDLC links to Bobby Witt Sr.
Mr. ZiPS – what are your 99th percentile Elly steals and WAR totals?
Wild how much Zips hate Singer and the rest of the staff outside Greene and Martinez-I’m higher on all the rest of their starters than zips and think there’s a non 0% chance that burns makes his debut in 2025
The ballpark is making them appear much worse than they actually are at first glance. Not that they’re great but Abbott, Lodolo, Lowder, Ashcraft and Singer all have an ERA- between 104-112 which translates to ERA’s in the 4.46-4.84 range at GABP. If they were in T-Mobile Park, those would be low 4 ERAs.
I was talking about the projected WAR totals, which should be park agnostic (right?)-the negative projection for the bullpen seems harsh as well
True. They’ve got decent depth of 4/5 starters but they really need a solid #2.
The #2 will have to be someone from within stepping up. Could be Lodolo if he stays healthy. Could be Lowder if he keeps up his pace from last year. Could even be Burns down the stretch a la Skenes. Lots of potential.
CandeLinacion-Stephley not getting enough hype. Hope we see a matchup vs Tungsten Arm O’Doyle sometime this year.
Not sure what to make of this team. You can squint & see how they could win 86 games, but, it involves some real bouncebacks/improvements.
They ARE good up the middle & just 1 year ago it appeared they had so many 3B that they also had 1B & LF locked down with the overflow…now all 3 spots appear to be below average.
They really need 2 of Marte, CES, Candelario, Steer to bounce back. If that happens, I think the offense will be good enough.
I am more bullish than Zips on the SP. A # of recent top prospects- Abbott, Lodolo, Lowder. Burns is close. If you view Greene/Martinez/Singer as the 1-3, if 1-2 of those jump a level than the SP could be a strength.
Bullpen is bad & they need to spend some $$ shoring that up.
My biggest hope for them is they have Tito Francona managing now & he should be a definite improvement. We’ll see if that leads to enough of an increase in wins to be a factor.
They’ve still got Sal Stewart and Cam Collier to dream on too. And Stafura if you like a project.
I’ve been real skeptical of Marte and CES and Steer, but Candelario has often had lousy years followed by very good ones. They probably should keep giving the young guys opportunities because that’s more valuable than signing someone like Josh Rojas or bringing back Ty France.
But the Jake Fraley, TJ Friedl, Will Benson trio in the outfield is awful, and their highest rated outfield prospect is…Carlos Jorge? Hector Rodriguez? Mike Sirota? Not that any of these guys are even available but the future would look a whole lot brighter if they had literally any outfield prospects you could dream on. At all. They should have no problem with bringing in as many outfielders as they can to challenge the ones they have right now.
If Barry Larkin is 15% as high on Arroyo as he was Barrero, EDLC will be moving to CF soon
Honestly with the exception of De La Cruz (wow) the offensive numbers are disappointing considering the Reds play in Great America Small Park. Using a 3 year roll the ball park has a Home Run Factor of 128 !!!!!! For lefties it is 142 but still pretty high for righties as well. I look at the Home Run projections and wonder how low they would be in a neutral park. TJ Friedl is really low. And Matt McLain is a good hitter but I expected higher numbers. On the flip side if Hunter Greene can do what he does or is expected to do in that park it illustrates how good he is. I know the Reds won’t do it but imagine if Anthony Santander hit in that park.
i remember Jay Bruce talking about how hard it is to be a good hitter in GABP. yeah you can hit dongs, but the OF is so tight it’s hard to hit gappers/gorks/bloopers that routinely find grass in other parks. He seemed pretty agitated by it, like he had to change his approach hitting there. I always found that interesting and relevant.
Mid-way through 2023, the Reds called up about 17 prospects who all started hitting, and they became the talk of MLB – THE most hyped team in baseball. They signed Candelario in the offseason which gave them what looked like an absolute glut of talent. Then last year, McClain got hurt, Noelvi got suspended, a few guys regressed to the mean, and now they look like just another mediocre team without momentum. What the heck happened here?
you just told us
Yeah, but is this the identity of the team now? Or are they the exciting team we thought they were at the end of 2023?
Yeah. It’s so hard to make sense of their power batting position group. Anything is possible in any direction. The 80th-20th percentile splits are something.
And yeah, the vibe of the franchise is like…. a perma-gamble (for lack of a better term) franchise? But then again those are just vibes and you have to take some risks with something and this is just a different way to go about it?
They could be the Brewers, the 6org era Mariners, or be the amorphous entity they have long been. All are equally plausible.
Didn’t a lot of their young guys hit way over their head in 2023? I remember someone noting that the gap between wOBA and xwOBA was significant, meaning they were due for some serious regression. Some guys had that happen, but also injuries and suspension. Everything went right in 2023 and went wrong in 2024.
Going forward, my guess is the truth is in the middle. Some of those prospects will fade and a couple should be decent contributors, but not stars (save for McLain maybe).
I think this is right – sky high BABIPs in 2023. Injuries, suspensions, and regression in 2024. This is a real prove-it year for a lot of their kids.
McLain too, though not the regression since he was hurt. I would be shocked if he put up 4 WAR. That projection seems way too aggressive.
Agree – McLain seemed due for regression anyway, even if he wasn’t hurt.
I am one of those that picked the Reds to win the NL Central in 2024 but losing McLain was too much to overcome. His return puts me back on that band wagon.
The pitching is good enough to keep them in the race and, with Lowder, has a good possibility of surprising on the upside. Bullpens are bullpens and in today’s strange new world of pitching usage it is even more difficult to predict who might come from out of nowhere to turn the season around. Then there is the very important change at manager. Terry Francona is a future Hall of Famer and his presence could make the difference in what should be a wide open division.
The Candelario deal was silly for the Reds at the time and problematic now; I wonder if there’s time and opportunity to move him and then make a run at Bregman? Even with a bullpen composed of Yikes, that’s a WC-competitive team with a heckuva left side
The guy they should be in on is Santander. Plays a position of need and might hit 50 HR a year playing half his games in their band box.
They should have been in on Tucker too.
True, though his pending FA after 2025 & the Reds fiscal restraints (self imposed) make you think he would have just been a rental for them. He’s going to get $200M+ most likely & I just don’t see them going there.
However, 1-2 of Santander/Conforto/Teoscar/O’Neill/Joc should have been signed.
Add Kepler to the Santander list too. And I agree, any of those guys, all moderate FAs would have made sense for Cincinnati and their needs.
As for trading for Tucker, well…yeah, they almost definitely wouldn’t sign him long term. And he’d be a rental. But they could have certainly come up with a comparable package, and if he was truly a rental, they’d get a comp pick back (or if everything went wrong, they could trade him at the deadline).
Yeah, Bregman might be too ambitious, but fully agreed with everyone’s thoughts. Maddening in CIN!
LuBob is ready, willing and able to be a factor in GAB under the watchful eye and steady hand of Tito
That’s a good fit too. Maybe the best gamble for them to take with their current core.
They should have been all-in on Kyle Tucker.
Move Candelario where? The bottom of the ocean?
Candelario’s locker can go next to Davey Jones’ locker. Not sure what position Jones plays, though.
