2026 ZiPS Projections: Baltimore Orioles
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the preantepenultimate team is the Baltimore Orioles.
Batters
Baltimore’s pitching looked to be a problem entering the 2025 season, but the lackluster offense turned what was a good team with a run prevention problem into a losing club. After ranking second in the American League in runs scored in 2024, the O’s dropped to 11th in 2025, and suffice it to say, the pitching didn’t bail them out. A 75-87 record looks bad in a comparatively mild way given some of the clunkers the team has crafted since 1997, but it was one of the biggest O’s letdowns in at least my memory (I’m from Baltimore). But like the Blue Jays going into 2025 or the Yankees going into 2024, people tend to underrate good teams coming off of crappy seasons, sometimes horribly. There’s this belief that the lousy year is some baseline expectation and you have to start counting wins added from that point, which is a very poor way to make projections.
Have the O’s done enough with the offense? If the projections here are accurate, probably. With so many underperformances, some righting of the ship was always going to happen anyway, but the O’s didn’t just wait for the magic of regression to do the job for them. I don’t think the end of the Pete Alonso contract will be pretty, but he’s a legitimate big bat in a way the franchise tried to pretend Ryan Mountcastle was for a long time. Taylor Ward isn’t great, but you know who Taylor Ward is. The O’s are now in a position where they don’t need Coby Mayo or Heston Kjerstad to get back on track, though it would of course be nice.
ZiPS is starting to worry about Adley Rutschman, but it’s still giving him a pretty solid 2026 projection. I imagine this is a make-or-break year in his long-term projections. Samuel Basallo might not be ready-ready to be a catcher from a defensive standpoint, but he’ll likely be fine as a backup and part-time DH, and hopefully get enough time behind the plate to smooth out his rough edges.
Gunnar Henderson is absolutely terrific and the best player on the team, and if not for Bobby Witt Jr., he would be the favorite to be the best shortstop in baseball. If the Orioles really want to boost the confidence of the fanbase, getting an extension done with Henderson sooner rather than later would go a long way. O’s fans aren’t that far removed from the dread of watching Manny Machado march closer to free agency every year, with the team never really going all in to try and keep him.
Surprisingly, Jackson Holliday may be woefully underrated at this point. He needs to trim down his very large platoon splits and play better defense at second, but we also have to remember that he turned 22 just a month ago. There’s still tremendous upside here.
I think the O’s lineup will be fine.
Pitchers
The Orioles still need a dude. Or, if you prefer, an ace. Or maybe a Big Hoss? Acquiring Shane Baz from the Rays and re-signing Zach Eflin to a “prove-it” deal are nice moves, and getting more Kyle Bradish is a good thing. Trevor Rogers was damn good too — so good, in fact, that I no longer get random DMs angry that I voted for him for NL ROY over Jonathan India — and Dean Kremer is a perfectly serviceable innings-eater. If this starting five is healthy all season, it will be a respectable rotation. But that’s a really big if. Everybody but Kremer has a significant injury history, and I mean significant — this isn’t simply some cowardly bet-hedging on my part. Cade Povich projects as a pretty acceptable fill-in option, but after him, both ZiPS and I have basically zero confidence in the team’s depth. Adequacy is attainable here, but it’s very, very fragile. This is a team that got very few pleasant surprises in 2025 outside of Rogers. Chayce McDermott, for example, seemed for a bit like he might be getting things together, but looking at his season as a whole, I don’t think that would be a very good bet (though I think he could be useful as a reliever).
Baltimore didn’t get Dylan Cease or Ranger Suárez, but there are still options out there. This may be the team that could most use Framber Valdez, and if they go the whole offseason without getting a significant starting pitcher in free agency, I think they’ll come to regret it by June. They may still win a bunch of games and get to the playoffs, but I strongly suspect that without further additions, this rotation will look like a real problem at the trade deadline. The market gets very unexciting very quickly after Valdez, and I also don’t think an incentive-laden deal for someone like Lucas Giolito or Aaron Civale is sufficient.
Even with Félix Bautista out for most of the year (again), this time with rotator cuff surgery, ZiPS actually does like Baltimore’s bullpen. Ryan Helsley ought to be just fine as the closer, and ZiPS sees a lot of Orioles with ERAs in the 3.00 as relievers: Andrew Kittredge, Keegan Akin, Dietrich Enns, Yennier Cano, and Tyler Wells. Even the pitchers ZiPS hates, it doesn’t really hate hate, and there are some off-the-radar relievers who ZiPS is highly interested in, such as Micah Ashman and Alex Pham (as a reliever). Another arm never hurts, but I think the Orioles need to be spending their time, energy, and cash shoring up the rotation some more.
I generally agree with ZiPS on the Orioles and see them as being in the second-tier of AL East teams with the Yankees, a few wins behind the Red Sox and Blue Jays up top.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
The hitting projections look pretty great considering how bad the team was last year (yes I know Dan specifically points out that’s not how to project).
I think it shows a bounceback or improvement for every starter from last year? Gunnar, Adley, Basallo, Westburg, Holliday, Mountcastle, O’Neill, Cowser, Mayo, Kjerstad all project as better than last year. I think Beavers and Jeremiah Jackson, both obviously playing over their heads last year, are the only carry-overs to not get an improved projection. As an O’s fan I certainly hope it’s all true, and either way it really underlines how much the club collectively crashed last season.
One nit to pick, Kjerstad isn’t starting unless things have gone really, really bad
Based on the comps, their top priority should be keeping Adley away from radiation poisoning.
Hey Dan, great work again. Trying to line up some of the projections/WAR number. For example, on the field graphic at the top of the page, it says 3.2 WAR from Bradish but then further down, only 2.0 WAR. It is similar for other players, how do those line up? Is it based on a different inning number? Thanks!
You’re correct, the number in the graphic is based off of depth chart playing time estimates, whereas the tables are based off of ZiPS’ projected playing time (which is depth chart/context agnostic).
With Framber they’re pretty good. Boston still looks the best though.
They’re probably still #4 in that division. Blue Jays likely the best, with the Red Sox and Yankees after them.
Scott Boras hasn’t done an extension more than one season from free agency since Elvis Andrus in April of 2013. Unless Henderson decides to change agents like Cal Raleigh did, there is no point in even thinking about extending him until after the 2027 season.
Henderson is betting on himself. It’s a valid strategy
Sure. I have no problem with his decision, but people keep criticizing the Orioles for not extending Henderson when they don’t have that option unless Gunnar changes agents.
It’s Gunnar’s decision, and a good one. We should stop blaming agents for what is ultimately their clients’ decision. Players aren’t helpless in this process. They’re informed and choose their own course of action.
Dietrich Enns truthers rise up
Sanchez is a free agent
Interesting that Rutschman, Westburg, Holliday, Cowser, Beavers, Mayo, Jackson, Mountcastle, O’Neill, Noel, all have about the same line – 20 HR, 60-70 RBI, .250ish BA, differentiating mostly for Holiday in R and a few more SB, and place in lineup. Trying to decide whether that is a good thing or not…..
I love that we could have two Jeremy Guthries (Jeremies Gurthrie?) on this team!
But no Darren O’Day
There can be only one.
I wasn’t planning on deep-diving Satchel Paige’s 1942 season today, but away I went. Comps are fun.
“Baltimore’s pitching looked to be a problem entering the 2025 season, but the lackluster offense turned what was a good team with a run prevention problem into a losing club.”
It’s so refreshing to read an accurate take of what went wrong for the O’s last year.
For this year, I’ll take the under on Cowser and worry that CF is going to end up being a major problem. I am not high on the Milkman’s ability to make contact or play CF defense.
I am extremely worried about this, especially with two below average fielders in the corners. I really want Elias to trade for Luis Robert Jr.
Wait Taylor Ward and Dylan Beavers are below average now? I thought they both had good range for a corner outfielder.
Looking at the Statcast page now. Looks like runners had absolutely no problems advancing when Taylor Ward had the ball, which is weird because up until recently his arm strength was pretty good. Historically it looks like he made up for it with a strong jump, but that was pretty average in 2025.
Beavers was given a 45 field in center field by Eric last year. There’s not enough here on Statcast to really draw any sort of conclusion but it does seem like he takes a little while to react. I don’t see a breakdown between LF and RF though, and that does seem like the kind of thing that would matter. Some OFers have no problem flipping from LF to RF, for others I think they can’t track the ball as well from one side.
I wonder if it’s SSS/variance you wouldn’t think that Wards arm would be his issue if he initially was a C/3B
O’Neill is going to start over Beavers. Dylan will back up all three positions.
Oh man is that a mistake.
You should look at the prospect report on Beavers again. “Fringe CF” and more likely a corner OF are statements made by Eric. I don’t think that 45 is for CF defense
I feel more confident than you about the defense. He needs to make some serious adjustments to his bat or we might be trotting out Tavares or Carlson. Teams can afford to have one problem spot, but it’s not ideal
We don’t have one problem spot. We have no spots that aren’t a problem. Alonso is the worst defensive first baseman in the league. Holliday is one of the worst defensive second basemen in the league. Henderson and Westburg are below average defensively. Rutschman went from being great defensively to now being below average. Ward and O’Neill are well below average defensively. Cowser is one of the best left fielders defensively, but is below average in center.
The O’s pitchers are in for a long season.
1) I was referring to a problem spot on the lineup of Cowser isn’t hitting. 2) Westburg is objectively not below average. Ward is not below average, an average def score would be -7.5 for LF over a full season. Alonso may well DH a majority of the time, if Mountcastle is on the team, platooning with Basallo part time at first. Conceding Holliday and TON, however a 22 year old that only started that position two years ago can certainly improve
Any bigger name position player than Henderson from MLB hitting FA between now and his?
Kiner-Falefa has 11 letters and a hyphen, more than Henderson’s 9 letters, and is a free agent right now.
Ha!
Probably not, he is top 10 in terms of position players right now, maybe even Top 5, and he will be a free agent in advance of his age 28 season (I think). It seems likely that he will be the biggest position player free agent since Juan Soto.
The only position players who are on the younger side (so, not Freddie Freeman) in between now and then who could be huge are Murakami, Bichette, Adley, William Contreras, Jeremy Pena, and Kyle Tucker. It seems likely that Gunnar will be bigger than all of them.
There is definitely star power on the pitching side though with Skubal coming next year.
Hey Dan. Not sure if you can answer this, but what is there in Alonso’s profile that makes ZiPS project him at basically a career best offensive season? Is the ballpark more favorable to him than in New York? Are their underlying metrics that support 2025 being the norm?
To me, he’s basically been ~20% above average as a hitter for three years except for a red hot 3-4 week start to 2025. ZiPS projects him slightly better than he was in 2025 while other projection systems project significant regression. I know you can’t comment on what others do, but why doesn’t Alonso projection wind up regressed toward 2023 and 2024?
Alonso just posted a career high .385 xwOBA back by a variety of improvements, just quick glancing..:
– Jump from an 89 MPH avg EV to 93(!!)), a massive jump that perhaps suggests strength, conditioning, mechanics, general health are on point
– Massive jumps in barrel% and hardhit%
– Career low IFFB%
– After avg ~30% chase the earliest 4 seasons, he maintained something like 26-27% over the past 3
– Career low CSW last year
Whether it happens or not I can’t say, but dude is lined up for a big 2026. It’s one of the best moves made this offseason
Obvy not speaking for ZiPs but there *is* lots of freely available info on this very site that could offer insight…literally going back to NCAA now for many, no?
Thanks for the insight. Is there evidence that suggests those are improvements or adjustments not just random variance?
For example, you noted IFFB%. At a quick glance I see his IFFB% was 13.1% in the first half of 2024 then 4.8% in the second half. Likewise 9.3% in the first half of 2025 then 5.6% in the second half basically due to not hitting infield flies in August. That seems to vary a lot, even over 300 PAs. If there were changes in approach, I’d expect them to carry through the season, but instead July was awful contributed to his second half results being in line with 2023 and 2024.
Maybe there are some underlying changes that will lead to better contact going forward. But I’m skeptical that Alonso is going to match 2025. I guess we’ll see in 8 months.
Not sure Zac Gallen is the Big Hoss Dan is talking about (yearning for?) but he would seem to be a very good fit for them if they lose out on Valdez
I don’t think there is a great fit for the front of this pitching staff in free agency this year, which is really unfortunate for them because that is what they need.
Framber Valdez would be a big help but he wouldn’t be that good in front of that infield defense.
Zac Gallen’s stuff has crashed.
Freddy Peralta is still theoretically available but a deal would be costly. They don’t really have a headliner for a deal like that unless they are willing to deal a player who is slated to play a role this year off the big league roster. That’s not ideal to say to say the least.
I think Mayo could be the key piece in a deal, but his stock isn’t as high as it was a year ago for sure.
I really, really don’t think Mayo has much value at this point. Looks a lot like Darin Ruf or Ryon Healy. The upside is Gary Sanchez or Ryan Jeffers at first base or maybe the corner outfield? There are players who succeed with his hitting profile like Randy Arozarena, or Jeffers, Sanchez, or Mike Napoli. But most don’t.
Probably more like an FV45 type of prospect at this point. I’d take Wehiwa Aloy over him for sure, and also all of Beavers, Gibson, and Luis De Leon (who are probably the three best prospects after Basallo in some order).
After that things get murky, I’m not a fan of Griff O’Ferrall and I was a fan of Bradfield but his lack of power is scaring me, so I would take Mayo over them. Don’t know much about Nate George, Esteban Mejia, or Nestor German, they seem like arrow-up guys but they weren’t on my radar at all until this year. Braxton Bragg is hurt, I think. Those are the players that are typically mentioned as being top Orioles prospects, right?
For sleepers I do really like Anthony Nunez even though he’s unbelievably risky, and I think Creed Willems is intriguing. I’m also increasingly convinced that Jordan Sanchez is the sort of prospect we need to pay attention to even though he is a long way from the majors.
The infield defense is not so diabolically bad that Frambers value plummets. The LF wall helps, and if Westburg is healthy he is a good third base defender. Gunnar below average but not catastrophic. Alonso may well DH and the Mountcastle/Basallo platoon will be at first
He still might be valuable for them because ground balls are good for pitchers in general but it definitely is not maximizing his skillset. Not like the Mets or Cubs (or other teams that probably are not looking for a starter) in that price range.
It doesn’t have to maximize his skill set for him to retain a lot of value as a pitcher. If he’s getting a 5+ year deal somewhere, I don’t think he will care about whether it pads his stats vs the Mets. That being said, if the Mets want him they will likely pay enough for it to not matter
Yeah although if the Mets wanted him he would probably have already signed. Similar story with the Cubs. I am guessing the Mets are only offering a 3 year deal, or they just don’t want to deal with a guy who takes out his frustration on his catcher.
Do you really think Beavers will get more ABs than O’Neil?
If they’re mostly platooning in RF
