2026 ZiPS Projections: Chicago White Sox
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Chicago White Sox.
Batters
The 2025 White Sox performed the very weird dual feat of being one of baseball’s most improved teams compared to 2024 and losing more than a 100 games. There wasn’t much in the way of quality baseball on the South Side, but the Sox actually had enough things go their way this time around that they didn’t perform at the low end of their talent level. There were even a few things to like about the team, enough to motivate fans to turn on a game out of more than morbid curiosity.
One thing you’ll notice when looking at the depth chart below? No negative numbers! That’s a pretty low baseline, but the Sox have added enough talent that they’re clearly better than any of the teams in the International League. There are still questions about Colson Montgomery, and he likely won’t ever be a favorite to put up a good batting average or on-base percentage, but his power arrived and he can credibly play shortstop. The power has most certainly not arrived for Chase Meidroth, but he’s shown he can hack it at second base, he’s fairly disciplined at the plate, and he’s a pretty solid contact hitter. He doesn’t have a lot of star potential, but if the batting average creeps up a bit, he can be a useful OBP-heavy second baseman.
The White Sox haven’t figured out their catcher spot yet, but Kyle Teel probably has the best average outlook and the highest upside, so hopefully he’ll be given every chance to push out the competition and seize control of the job. Surprisingly, ZiPS thinks Luis Robert Jr. still has a decent amount of upside left, and the Sox might as well play him and see, since I don’t believe any team is going to be willing to pay the Pale Hose what they’d want to part with him. Miguel Vargas is fine as a stopgap third baseman, and he showed that many analysts had given up on his bat too quickly, but he’s still too much of a tweener: not good enough defensively to be plus at third, and not really interesting as a hitter if used at first base or designated hitter.
Of all the left-fielders in baseball, Andrew Benintendi is one of them. Lenyn Sosa will mostly play first base since the White Sox don’t have an obvious place to play him otherwise and he kinda hits, and right field and DH will largely be populated by whoever’s hanging around on the roster and isn’t starting elsewhere.
This offense will almost certainly be one of the worst in baseball in 2026, but I’d much rather watch this group than the one the team had entering 2024.
Pitchers
Chicago’s pitching staff was actually kinda adequate-ish in 2025, enough so that they mostly kept the games interesting. Shane Smith won’t make anyone forget Garrett Crochet, but he took a big step forward this season, and the team ought to be able to just stick him in the rotation and watch him pitch like a reasonable no. 2 starter. (I will note that there’s a bit of a disagreement between ZiPS and Steamer on Smith, with ZiPS the sunnier projection.)
Noah Schultz’s outlook has come down quite a bit in the projections thanks to some walk issues that popped up this year. In his first stint with Double-A Birmingham in 2024, he never allowed more than two walks in an outing, but he did that in seven different starts this year in his second Double-A go-around. He had mixed results after getting promoted to Triple-A Charlotte, but his time there was plagued by tendinitis in his knee. Still, Schultz only turned 22 a few months ago, so it’s too early to panic about his projection.
The rotation is basically no. 4/5 starters as far as the eye can see: If you couldn’t see the names on the projections for Davis Martin, Sean Burke, Jonathan Cannon, and Duncan Davitt, you probably wouldn’t be able to guess who is who. But on the plus side, the Sox are deep with these kinds of pitchers, and if a couple of them can have Smith-sized breakouts, the rotation might start to come together for the next few years. Hopefully the team is patient with Schultz and Hagen Smith, as neither of them is likely to be successful in the majors right away.
In terms of the bullpen, ZiPS is easily the most intrigued by Grant Taylor and would like to see him eventually get a chance at starting. But he ought to be fine in the ‘pen, and Jordan Leasure, Mike Vasil, and Brandon Eisert are an unexciting trio, but at least the games will end. The projections aren’t great, but for my part, I’m probably the most interested in seeing a healthy Prelander Berroa, as I still think that he’s one of the more interesting arms in the org.
The White Sox might keep their losses in the 90s in 2026, but I’d probably place the likelihood of a Cinderella season as being far lower for them than a lot of teams in that tier, such as the Nationals. While it’s not the kind of thing you actually want to say in a press release, I hope the Sox aren’t too obsessed with the exact number of wins they get next season, and focus on making their team a long-term contender instead of, say, pushing for .500 in 2026. We’ll see.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Benintendi… I thought you’d be the chosen one…
Who is this mysterious William Bergolla with near-age comparisons to Andrelton Simmons and Jose Ramirez? What pieces are similar?
2024 trade deadline pickup. Bergolla’s and Ramirez’s age 20 AA seasons were pretty similar. But most undersized high-contact young for the level infielders don’t turn into Jose Ramirez. And Bergolla is playing in an environment where stolen bases are easier.
Thank you! I appreciate the response.
William Bergolla comps to José Ramirez. He’s one yo watch
That’s what I’m saying! They’ve got him at 20-grade power, and the stats on his page don’t really seem too similar to Jose’s at 21 though, not sure what specific pieces of his profile ZiPS finds similar.
Likely the Cairo or Simmons comps will play out as he does not seem to have the power of Ramirez though Ramirez didn’t have that power, either.
I’ll note that this is Ramirez through 2013.
How does it track levels – does it look for similar levels or does it translate and use that translated value?
They both played at the same level in their age 20 seasons.
Truer words have never been written.
Are there any current position players on the Major League roster you like? I want to really like Teel, but ZIPs seems a little lower than I was hoping. Any chance he’s a star?
I like Teel better than the projection too. His defensive metrics are pretty bad but nobody seemed to think he would have problems with ball blocking before and a .337 xwOBA for a catcher is exceptional.
He’s probably the team’s best chance for a 4-win position player because I don’t understand how Colson Montgomery went from a fringe shortstop and not being able to hit anything to channeling Willy Adames on defense and Gunnar Henderson or Tatis Jr at the plate. But if he hits 40 homers or something he’s obviously the guy.
The long term guy to watch is Braden Montgomery but his lousy projection for 2026 is probably accurate. He’s got a lot of work to do.
Montgomery’s entire career has been just so weird so far.
He was drafted right around where everybody said he should be. In 2023 he looked like a star in the making, then regressed in 2024, but maybe he was injured? In 2025 he looked like he was going to wash out. He was so bad that they sent him to the Complex mid season. He hit .176/.233/.176 there…and they decided he was fixed. Back in AAA, he hit .270/.353/.574 over about 7 weeks so they decided he was super duper fixed and promoted him, That seemed like the usual White Sox wish casting, but then he hit .239/.311/.529 with 21 HR in 71 games against major league pitching with above average defense at shortstop.
At this point, he could be anything from a flash in the pan to a perennial All Star and nobody would be surprised, so I’m not going to complain about ZIPS projecting less value in a full season than he put up in a half last year,
I suspect it won’t be true for long, though.
Well, except the GM basically said they don’t want him to play the field much.
Yikes. This looks horrible for 2026. I do indeed see another 100 losses. The White Sox made a big mistake waiting and waiting for a great offer for Luis Robert. Every year he gets worse and has less value. And the pitching is brutal. Even Smith is likely a #3 at best. The rest are # 5s at least for 2026. I don’t mean to pile on but even the 2 prize catchers do not really have good projections. Wow !!
In hindsight it is true; they’re not getting much for LRJ. However we don’t know what they were offered. When you’re in a bad position as they were, it’s not wrong to press for more and be willing to wait (which worked well with Crochet at the 2024 trade deadline).
The really unfortunate part was when he kept regressing and getting injured. The Sox took a gamble that he’d return to form but he did not.
So people can say now, “any low ball offer would have been better than this”! And they’re right, I guess.
Funny Luis Robert offseason comment. He said something along the lines of “this offseason I am going to exercise and practice baseball and get better”. Which sort of made me wonder what he was doing every other season. It is probably nothing. But also funny in a weird way. What if he literally just never practiced prior or worked out? I mean that would explain a lot really.
Sounds like his version of “I just get up every day, put my pants on one leg at a time, and give it all I got. I eat my wheaties and work hard.”
The guy’s built like an NFL Wide Receiver. I don’t think he’s never worked out before.
It is perfectly fair to go after the White Sox for not trading Luis Robert after 2023. The defense of holding him was that he would still be under contract when the White Sox were good again and / or he had so much team control they could wait for a great offer.
But anyone looking at the White Sox’s organization could see that that the rebuild had failed (they knew this too, they traded Cease) and anyone looking at Luis Robert’s injury history could tell you that only getting 250-400 PAs out of him was the norm.
It turned out worse than anyone could have predicted on both counts, with Roberts playing badly in addition to being hurt and the White Sox maybe being the worst team of all time in 2024. But the warning signs that Robert would never be healthy at the right time and that the White Sox were going to need another rebuild were really obvious back then.
This rebuild is not going especially well, but it isn’t going very badly, either. It’s almost like the inverse of the failed Nationals rebuild: the Nats had stars, or at least guys who looked like they could be stars, but couldn’t develop anywhere near the raw amount of players necessary for a good team. The White Sox have a good amount of interesting players who could play for a contender. But unless Colson Montgomery manages to keep up his power numbers from the second half of last year, I don’t see anyone who could feasibly be a star (maybe there’s like a 5% chance it’s Braden Montgomery, but IDK). Schultz could still end up being a good starter, but the ship to be a star pitcher has probably sailed for him. Ditto Smith, though he’s much more troubling.
Drew Thorpe also still exists, but at this point, I doubt he is anything more than yet another Cannon/Martin/Burke #5 starter.
I think Teel is the most likely star with Braden Montgomery next. Colson Montgomery, Noah Schultz, and Hagen Smith seem more like league-average contributors with upside.
The Cease trade resulting in the bust of Thorpe and Iriarte has been a big blow. If those two don’t turn around fast and Bonemer doesn’t turn into a very good player fast, I think this team will stay in the low 60s win basin for a couple more years.
It’s tempting to sign one of the young Japanese stars to jumpstart the rebuild, but I think Dan is right that this won’t work given how low the team is now. I think they’ll sign three SP’s (think Martin Perez and Adrian Houser again), a RF’r (Tauchman again), and a setup man all willing to take one year deals. (Keeps the payroll clean for any pending lockout too.) These would hopefully be flipped at the ASB and then they’ll do this process once again in 2027 before signing real free agents in 2028.
It struck me that the Zips forecast of the Pirates was really good. The rotation looks like one of the better ones in the game. The lineup has maybe two weak spots. (They’re on Schwarber supposedly.) And the bullpen is weak. I should have commented on that page, but that’s one rebuild that looks good.
Murakami would be a great fit for the White Sox, he’s got tons of power and a suspect hit tool. Isn’t that what they look for?
It doesn’t matter though, unless they outbid another team by 50% he’s not signing with the White Sox. He’s going to go to a team that has won more games than the White Sox have recently.
Yeah. I think Cody Ponce is more realistic. They can re-run the Erick Fedde flip.
That’s partly because of the new draft rules, being the worst team ever and then drafting 10th is a pretty hilarious miscalculation by the front office. The draft rules incentives a team like the Sox to spend, but Jerry’s done with that and he always spent weirdly anyway — rarely paying for elite talent.
You don’t really need to go outside the organization for an example of a failed rebuild with a bunch of guys who looked like the could be stars. You could’ve just said this is the inverse of the last Sox rebuild with Eloy, Moncada, Robert, etc.
I always scroll right down to the player comps and yeesh there isn’t anything fantastic in the whole group unless you think William Bergolla really can be comped to Jose Ramirez. I had fun counting 2000’s-2010’s Orioles: Jorge Julio, Wigginton, Hammel, Guthrie. This is a ‘remember some guys’ list, ha.
Something I think would be fun to do is: for the player comps, show a weighted average of career WAR for the 3 comps. For example, 80% of Player 1’s career WAR, 50% of Player 2’s, and 30% of Player 3’s. I don’t know how much correlation would be there, but it could give a quick sense of projected career value; at a minimum it would be interesting in the context of the names themselves.
I like your WAR comp idea
Yeah, the comps are a who’s who of “who?”
I’d be curious to know if ZIPS factors in Papal intercession in these projections, or if we’d have to go elsewhere for that data
baldeirmontry got me. Thanks
I thought the Bonemer comps were interesting. Really performed in A-ball (other than power), but only 1 in 3 comps was a decent big leaguer.
Looking again, his power was just fine if unremarkable (.192 ISO across two levels).
Nah, that’s quite good for power production in the context of a teenage cold-weather hitter’s full-season debut; the Sally League slashed .225/.320/.342, a measly .117 ISO.
It’s also a bit encouraging that his ISO came from lots of 2B/3B (30 & 4) proportional to 12 HR. Conventional scouting wisdom is that teenage hitters lacing lots of doubles in the low minors will turn a chunk of those into HR with a few offseasons of professional conditioning under their belts.
Lots of HR but not many 2B early is usually indicative of a quite strapping young lad with an already questionable hit tool.
Just in case someone gets too excited about J-Ram being a comp at that point in his career.

You should have stopped at 99. 100 gave me a tiny ray of hope again.
Maybe more like 80, there’s also Ozzie Smith at (if I can count right) 92, Jose Altuve at 84.
Oh, how the Meady have fallen.
Trading away an ace like Crochet always hurts but they did really well in that deal.
Quick question about the team listings chart at the top…
Did the Braves move from Atlanta, Georgia to Athens, Georgia?
Are you referring to the listing for the Athletics? They’re represented as ATH.
