2026 ZiPS Projections: San Francisco Giants
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the San Francisco Giants.
Batters
The 2025 season was an odd one for the Giants, as they lurched in and out of playoff contention at various points. A solid start kept San Francisco in the mix in the early months, lurking just a few games out in the NL West for a surprisingly long time. The team’s high water mark came in mid-June, when a victory over the Dodgers briefly got them into a first place tie, but just a few weeks later, they found themselves nine games out and falling to .500 faster than Bitcoin prices in 2014. It only took a week to trim that deficit down to four games, but a couple of significant losing streaks wiped out that work going into the trade deadline. The Giants traded Camilo Doval, Tyler Rogers, and Mike Yastrzemski at the deadline, and the team treaded water just enough to find themselves in the Wild Card race at the very end of the season thanks to the New York Mets really Metsing it.
After that kind of season, finishing at .500 feels like the universe getting the exact right result for a change. ZiPS does see a lot of sources of optimism in the offense, and thinks the Giants likely underperformed their actual talent level in 2025. Both Matt Chapman and Willy Adames finished the season with All-Star-caliber numbers, especially impressive for Adames considering how much he struggled in the early going. ZiPS actually thought both of them underperformed their peripheral statistics, a pretty decent divergence from Statcast, which wasn’t quite as optimistic. ZiPS has been high on Chapman and Adames in recent years anyway, and sees both as leading All-Star contenders next season.
Rafael Devers was a nice pickup, even if his profile isn’t ideally suited for Oracle Park, and his place in the depth chart graphic is a little misleading since the numbers are dragged down by sharing the spot with Bryce Eldridge and Jerar Encarnacion. ZiPS anticipates a bit of a recovery in Patrick Bailey’s bat in 2026, and really likes Jesus Rodriguez, acquired from the Yankees in the Doval trade. That gives the Giants four clearly above-average positions in the projections, and the computer is also content with Jung Hoo Lee in center field, and more surprisingly, the Casey Schmitt/Christian Koss/Tyler Fitzgerald chimera at second.
The only positions ZiPS is unhappy about are the outfield corners, though neither projects as a black hole sucking all the life out of the offense.
The computer also likes several players in the upper minors. The projections think Bo Davidson has a good chance to be more interesting than a lot of their current outfielders, and really likes a couple deeper cuts in the system: the quick, contact-oriented second baseman Nate Furman (acquired in the 2024 Alex Cobb trade), and the plucked-from-indy-ball Dayson Croes.
If ZiPS is correct, the Giants don’t need to put in a ton of work here.
Pitchers
ZiPS is pretty happy with the team’s offense, but it does see some real weaknesses on the pitching staff. Thankfully for the Giants, not having an ace isn’t one of their problems, and because of Chris Sale’s missed time in 2025, Logan Webb is currently projected as the active starter with the best chance to win 200 games (though it’s still worse than a coin flip). Webb’s about as dependable a starter as there is in baseball, even if he doesn’t have the flash that pitchers like Tarik Skubal or Garrett Crochet do. Though not really a huge strikeout guy, Webb’s K/9 rate ticked to just below 10 in 2025, so we’re not exactly talking about a glorified Kirk Rueter here. Robbie Ray was healthy after two years ruined by injury, and ZiPS sees Landen Roupp as a perfectly serviceable mid-rotation starter.
What ZiPS is less excited about is the back of the rotation. None of Kai-Wei Teng, Trevor McDonald, Hayden Birdsong, or Carson Whisenhunt get outright ugly projections, but there is an opportunity to upgrade here, at least at one of the slots, with some highly interesting starters like Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez out there in free agency. If you agree with ZiPS that the offense doesn’t really need a ton of love — or even better, if you’re the Giants and agree with ZiPS — adding a pitcher would be a good opportunity to close the gap versus the Dodgers a bit.
ZiPS is generally more optimistic about the bullpen than Steamer is, with the biggest exception being Joel Peguero, who both projection systems are uneasy with. But ZiPS likes Ryan Walker, and is quite happy with José Buttó, Erik Miller, Matt Gage, and Sam Hentges, while being more ambivalent when it comes to the back end of the ‘pen. Adding some depth here would be nice, though I think there are more gains to be had with an additional starter.
At this moment, ZiPS has the Giants down for a win total in the mid-to-high 80s, which ain’t bad for a team that has spent the last four seasons shuffling right around the .500 mark, though it’s not likely to instill any existential fear in the Dodgers. And if you’re a Giants fan, I assume that’s one of the things you’d really like to see.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
San Francisco’s rotation is projected to have more WAR than Milwaukee’s.
Where can I bet real money against this projection?
I count 11.2 in the Brewers’ graphic and 11.7 in the Giants’ graphic. That is a very minor difference and of course doesn’t capture all the pitchers that are going to start for each team. The Giants’ SPs also finished with 12.2 WAR to the Brewers’ 12.6 last year. Where the Brewers trounced them on the run prevention side was the bullpen and (non-framing) defense. I think it’s very reasonable to expect a similar situation this season.
That’s exactly my point. I think it’s reasonable to expect the Brewers rotation to have more WAR this year, just like last year, which reinforces my first comment. Keep the downvotes coming!
Depends on if Freddy peralta is a brewer by April and what woodruff is in ‘26. How Miz looks in a full season. Can Priester repeat his performance? Are we going to pretend Hall is a starter for another 2 months again? It just feels like there’s a lot more volatility in the brewers rotation.
True, but, 40% of that is Webb.
#2 is Ray & he is not exactly Mr. Consistency.
They need a 3rd solid SP, not only for rotation depth, but, in case Ray has a down year/gets hurt..which seems to happen every other year.
Keep in mind that’s using Depth Charts playing time. The advantage the Brewers have is that their seventh starter is better than the Giants’ fourth. (And the defense which is something else)
I would argue that the Brewers 2-7 SPs are better than the Giants at every slot level…potentially even 2-9 on SPs. The only slot the Giants have an advantage is #1 (Webb).
Logan Webb is one of the best pitchers in the league. That’s why.
The Brewers have a lot of questions, but they also don’t have a Logan Webb.
These WAR calculations seem kind of screwy. How can Ramos have a 114 OPS+, barely below average defense, ane be worse than an average player? Is defense SUPER heavily weighted?
Because he’s slightly below average in a corner outfield spot. If he had the same grades as a short stop, he would probably be a 3 WAR player.
Ramos comes out at 17.4 RAR over 9.77 runs/win. That’s 1.8. You expect two WAR per 600 PA as average and he’s projected at 640 PA. He was at 2.3 in 2024 with more PA and a 120 wRC+ and -4.1 fielding
He’s a leftfielder, those are easily replaceable.
Agree with Dan on SF needing to sign to top SP. Webb & Ray should be very good (though Webb is mch more trustworthy), but, this teams needs to be all in the next 2-3 years before the Adames/Chapman/Devers contracts turn sour as those 3 age.
Get a Valdez/Ranger Suarez & this team can likely be a playoff team..or at least be very close.
I guess they could also spend the big $$ on Tucker to play RF & that would likely have a similar effect, but, still feels like they are light 1 solid SP.
Would they really be that close? Phillies, Mets, Cubs, Brewers, Dodgers, Padres, Diamondbacks are all at least as good.
They could theoretically trade Eldridge for a pitcher and sign Tucker I suppose.
Maybe, maybe not..probably depends on which version of Ray they get in a given year.
I do think with Valdez/Suarez they’re in the mix & quite frankly, they’re so pot committed the next 5 years that not making another signing now to increase their chances of making the playoffs would be stupid.
It’s not my $$, but, might as well spend the extra $30-40M to get those 3-5 extra wins.
Pivetta, a fly ball pitcher – in a ballpark that suppresses home runs – would be a good fit. Whether or not the Padres would send him to a divisional rival is another question.
He would be great, as would Sheehan. I don’t think either are going to the Dodgers for that reason.
This team is sending out all kinds of signals that they’re going to only do one-year deals because of an impending lockout. Much more likely to bring back Justin Verlander than go for a top pitcher.
But you’re right, this team is firmly in now-or-never territory for the next 3 years or so. Webb and Devers are 29, Adames is 30, and Chapman is going to be 33. Even their younger contributors are in their primes (Lee, Ramos, Bailey) and probably won’t be there too much longer.
This is 100% the time for them to strike. I don’t know that Kyle Tucker is a great fit for them because he doesn’t have huge power and you need that if you’re a left handed hitter for the Giants. But they could really use a second baseman and a right fielder. I don’t know that there are many good fits at second base, but Ha-Seong Kim is apparently pretty good buddies with Lee (for real), and if they could get Wilyer Abreu from the Red Sox he would be perfect (check out his statcast).
Dylan Cease also would have been perfect, and so would MacKenzie Gore or Hunter Greene except that they probably would have to empty out their whole farm system for him (especially the latter). Maybe Freddy Peralta, but he only has one year left on his deal and would require a haul. If they go all-in on defense, someone like Merrill Kelly would work, but they could add him and a higher-end starter if they wanted to. The lack of interest in Tatsuya Imai is also weird.
But they’re not going to do any of that, they’re just going to sit on their hands and be competent instead of great.
I know Verlander started out horribly last season but he was up to 98-99 late in the year, and was one of MLBs best pitchers last couple of months. I could think of a lot worse things than resigning a hall of famer. Like I think he beats his projection by 10% or so.
I know no one cares about fantasy team, but as i was competing for an overall last year I watched every pitch Webb through from August on. He has some horrible late season luck on ground balls
I really liked Jesus Rodriguez in the Yankees’ system — it’s just that the Yankees have had some pretty absurd catching depth.
In the last two seasons, they’ve traded:
Kyle Higashioka (Soto deal)
Ben Rortvedt (3-way deal that netted them Jon Berti)
Luis Torrens (for $$$)
Agustin Ramirez (Chisholm deal)
Carlos Navarez (for Elmer Rodriguez)
Jose Trevino (for Fernando Cruz)
Jesus Rodriguez (Doval trade)
Edgleen Perez (Bednar trade)
Rafael Flores (Bednar trade)
Alex Jackson (for PTBNL)
And still have their homegrown starter (Austin Wells) and indy FA pickup backup (JC Escarra).
The Yankees have a crazy development pipeline for catching. Rodriguez looks like he would start for a lot of teams.
You also forgot Ben Rice
You’re right. So, also the nominal starter at 1B next year, too.
(I feel shame; Benny’s probably my favorite current Yankee.)
Casey Schmitt with a Chase Utley comp! …and Heliot Ramos with a John Bowker comp. The computer giveth and it taketh away
I had no idea who John Bowker was. Now I see he had -1.4 WAR and somehow got 622 PA. He’s still only 42. He can come back as a knuckleballer.
Saw that Bowker comp and immediately locked myself in the toilet stall to cry.
Cheer up, it means they’ll trade him to the Pirates for Gregory Soto, who will pick up three rings for you.
I count 14 bench options with a 90 ops+ or higher. That’s 13 more than the Brewers
Given the pitcher friendly reputation of their home stadium, kind of surprising that the Giants +0.23 ERA/FIP differential is the worst in MLB since 2022 aside from the Rockies and their +0.61 mark.
Probably a case where DRS (-68 runs | 26th since 2022) is probably doing a better job capturing their defensive performance than FRV is at -6 runs (17th) over that same time frame.
Chapman, Bailey and Adames are supposedly good defenders and no one is really terrible. It could be RISP BA. Also Bailey framing goes into FIP
Bailey and Chapman might be goat defenders. So that does a lot
This seems like a middle of the pack team with a fairly high payroll. Unless they go get Tucker and King or something, they seem stuck there.
Skip James and Brian Wilson are pretty good singers, but I’ve never been a Roger Miller fan.
As good as the Dodgers are, looks like any Giants team that squeaks into the playoffs would have to be “King of the Road.”
Devers’s comps of Teixeira, Delgado, and McGriff look great, but it’s hard to see how he fits with that group. They were all considerably better through age 28 both in raw and adjusted numbers. What am I missing?
Why are Grant McCray, Jesus Rodriguez and Diego Velasquez projected for more PA’s than Jung Hoo Lee, Patrick Bailey, or any of the 2bs listed on the diagram?
“SCHMOSSALD” lmao
Should be “Fitzschmikoss.”
I’ll take the way under on the Bailey projection, yes it is true that framing will still matter to some degree but it will matter way less going forward with abs.
I’m not sure whether this is true, but it’ll be interesting to find out. Does Bailey’s framing only fool the umpire, or does it fool the batter too? It’s like a split second thing to challenge.
