The Padres are looking to grow their Research and Development group by adding an Analyst and Intern who have a passion for baseball and winning through data-driven decision making to their team. Through both collaborative and individual work, members of their team will impact every part of the R&D process: idea and question generation, data exploration and analysis, development of decision making tools utilizing analyses, and communication of results to decision makers and other staff. Responsibilities:

  • Develop statistical models and perform general quantitative analysis dealing with player valuation, player development, and strategic decision making.
  • Collaborate with other members of the baseball operations department in the development process.

  • Effectively present completed projects and communicate new insights to decision makers and other staff.

Qualifications:

  • Intern: Bachelor’s degree (BA) in a job related area or currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program. Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, operations research, engineering, or physics.
  • Analyst: Bachelor’s degree (BA) in a job related area or 2+ years of related work experience.
  • Some experience with computer programming. Experience with R, Python, SQL, and Stan preferred.

Summary:
The New York Mets are seeking individuals to work in Baseball Operations, both in Flushing at the major league level and at their minor league affiliates. This is an entry-level, yearly position intended to gain exposure to a variety of responsibilities within Baseball Operations. Location will be determined based off fit. Applicants should be available to start in January.

Responsibilities:

  • Compile advance scouting reports.
  • Assist the amateur scouting department with information gathering in preparation for the Rule 4 Draft.
  • Support players and coaching staff with video and player-tracking technology.
  • Assist front office with administrative needs.
  • Data collection and entry.
  • Those at the minor league affiliate level will travel with the club on all road trips, filming and charting games, and operating the Trackman radar while the club is at home.

Position: Associate, Baseball Research & Development

Summary:
The New York Mets are seeking individuals with a background in data analysis to work with the club’s Research and Development team. This is an entry-level, yearly position in which associates will analyze baseball data and use their findings to provide insight within the different areas of Baseball Operations. These may include player development, amateur and international scouting, and major league advance scouting. Applicants should be available to start in January.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in the field of baseball analytics and communicate insights with others in Baseball Operations department.
  • Research, develop, and test predictive models to support Baseball Operations decision-making (i.e., player evaluation, roster construction, player development, in-game strategy).
  • Create data visualizations that integrate into Baseball Operations web application.
  • Collect and manage large data sets. This may involve writing scripts for automation as well as manual data entry.

Qualifications:

Job Description:
The Baseball Systems Developer will be responsible for developing, maintaining, testing and implementing web based, packaged, and/or mobile applications to support the Baseball Operations staff. The Systems Developer reviews, analyzes and develops information systems including planning, design, develop, testing, debugging and installation to support the applications and systems of the organization. May be expected to write documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Information Technology department, Baseball Systems Development staff, Analytics staff, and senior Baseball Operations staff to understand department needs and develop technical solutions that integrate existing and future applications into the organization’s information systems.
  • Employ an iterative software development approach to ensure quick roll-out along with incremental improvements to baseball systems over time.
  • Create specifications through gathering and documentation of user requirements as needed.
  • Work with Baseball Operations staff to prototype and implement user interfaces that are efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Provide time estimates for programming tasks based on defined project scope.
  • Develop responsive web, mobile, and desktop applications while making use of industry best practices and recommended coding standards to write clear, readable, and efficient code.

Position: 2019 Baseball Video Scouting Internship

Location: Coplay, PA

Sports Info Solutions, originally founded as Baseball Info Solutions, is looking for highly motivated individuals with a desire to work in the baseball industry. Video Scouts will have a chance to make an immediate impression on the company. Each Video Scout will be collecting data that is directly used by SIS clients (including major league teams) for advance scouting and evaluation purposes. Not only will the Video Scouts become more familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of hundreds of amateur and professional players, but they will also learn the ins and outs of the baseball statistics industry.

Former Video Scouts have risen rapidly through Major League front offices after getting their start watching two to three games per day at SIS. In the words of one former Video Scout and current Vice President of Baseball Operations, “My summer at [BIS] was the best baseball experience of my life.” Major League teams frequently approach SIS for recommendations when they need to fill a position within their organization, and SIS’ top video scouts each year routinely land team internships and/or full-time jobs.

SIS takes pride in making their internships great development opportunities for those looking to get their start in baseball. In addition to gaining invaluable experience watching thousands of
players across different levels, they offer introductory classes that cover writing scouting reports and using the database management language, SQL. They also provide insight and advice from previous SIS Video Scouts who have branched out into a variety of areas in the sports industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Score and pitch chart MLB, MiLB and amateur games using specialized computer software

Compensation:

Position: Minor League Video and Information Intern

Description:

The Minor League Video and Information Intern will provide a service to an Atlanta Braves affiliate through charting live baseball games and providing video and information to Braves coaches, coordinators, and front office members.

This role manages all aspects of the assigned affiliate’s video and advance scouting operation and aims to provide an experience that prepares the ideal candidate for a future role in the baseball industry.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Capture and chart video for each game of the full minor league schedule of an assigned affiliate (home games and team travel to road games, postseason included)
  • Manage a network of cameras set up to collect high-quality video from multiple angles.
  • Attach, edit, and upload video following each game daily.
  • Support the coaching staff/players with ad-hoc video/technology requests as assigned.
  • Lead the affiliate’s advance scouting process and produce associated materials for the coaching staff.
  • Act as a point-person for affiliate’s use of performance technology initiatives as assigned by the Braves front office.
  • Attend a portion of the Braves’ Spring Training camp in Orlando, FL to undergo training in video and advance information.
