Perfect baseball moment. Being a Pirates fan, it’s good to just see something like this and savor it. As a fan of BASEBALL, not any one team.

I’m not sure what I enjoyed more – watching Halladay pitch a no-hitter or watching my 11 year old Phillies fan son watch Halladay throw a no-hitter. An absolute nervous wreck with 2 outs in the 9th he looked at me and said “Dad, if he gives up a hit now I’m going to cry.”

Roy Halladay is amazing to watch. Almost the same feeling you get from seeing Mariano Rivera pitch. Thank god he’s left the AL East, but facing him the the World Series could be really tough.
Almost as exciting as Rivera huh? Yep, one not-hit inning is WAAAAAY cooler to watch than 9.
Not that one game, I meant over his career. Obviously he’s more valuable, but Rivera is something else to waict day in and day out for 15 years.
For such a mediocre organization, good things really seem to happen for them quite frequently.
Not to diverge, but watching Hallladay dominate just reminded me of how great Pedro was during his dominant stretch.
Halladay is the “perfect storm” of all aspects of pitching, not the karst of which is durability, efficiency, and endurance.
Rarely has a guy with so many early season CGs racked up such innings year after year.
Hard work + mechanics + genetics + skill = Halladay. U gotta love it when one of the best pitchers in the game is one of the most hard working and humble. That’s not always the case.
I totally get what you’re saying on the Pedro reference. Yeah, Pedro was obviously superior (especially in 1999/2000 when his ERA+ was something like 265 for both years combined) but there is the same level of magic in the air, the dejected, lost looks on the faces of the opposing hitters…the complete confidence that Doc will get it done.
Halladay isn’t Pedro in his prime. But then again nobody is. But Halladay has been the best pitcher in baseball for years. What happened today is amazing. Not at all surprising though. And nobody deserves it more.
I think pretty much only Koufax was Pedro in his prime…so there’s that. We will likely never see a pitcher as dominating as Pedro was when he was in his peak years.
That’s probably why everyone can use the name “Pedro” and we all know who they’re talking about instantly.

Y’know, I’ve never really bothered to look at his BABIP for his prime. I simply don’t understand how a 2.07 ERA and sub-1 WHIP should be possible with a .343 BABIP. The guy was simply a demigod on the mound.
Guys almost never made contact. His K/9 rate was something like 13 in 1999 and 11.5 in 2000. No contact for most outs so when they did actually hit it, it had a higher chance of being a hit and thus a higher BABIP. You only got a hit on Pedro when he threw a mistake and mistakes were rare.
I should say that I understand the physics behind it. He actually managed to have a FIP lower than his ERA, I’m just further exhibiting the absolute mind boggling quality of his pitching in his prime.
Having watched the last out several times since last night, I’ve been wondering: what are the rules regarding the bat interfering with the ball like that?
As long as its not intentional, its a live ball.
Here is the rule:
Rule 6.05 (h)..IF the batter drops his bat and the ballrolls against the bat in fair territory, and in the umps judgement there was no intention to interfere with the course of the ball, the ball is alive and in play.
Halladay’s provided some great moments this year. As great as the no-hitter and perfect game were, the game vs. Travis Wood were Wood was perfect for 8 but Roy kept the Phils in the game was one of my favorites. Roy didn’t have quite his A stuff but just kept hanging in there and giving the Phils another shot. That to me is the true mark of an ace.
I saw Larson pitch his 1956 World Series perfect game and he was not as dominant as Doc was yesterday.
I’ve never seen anyone pitch as well as Halladay did last night. Phenomenal. (Imagine if they had Clifford going tonight)
