Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Robinson Cano
Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.
Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

After reading through the polling questions for the Nth time, I’ve realized I’ve read the questions all wrong. I hope I haven’t messed this experiment up. I don’t honestly think Napoli should get 30M or 25M a year. And I answered for Salty when I was still under the belief that he really was 39. Boy do I suck at this.
I would go 7 for 175 mil. Or 5 years for 144 mil.

I would go 5/155 or 6/170. It’s insane to go anything more than that.
I said he might end up with 9 years/$24 million per and said I’d offer 7 years/$26 million per. In reality, I’d probably rather offer him 6 years at the most, but you have to overpay in free agency
Robinson Cano is a great player. He is one of my favorite players, even though he plays for the team I hate most. He is NOT worth the contract he is reportedly seeking for multiple reasons. He would have to put up the same consistent numbers he has put up over the last 4 years, over the duration of this contract to justify it, and that just isnt realistic. I can see giving him something close to what Joey Votto got at the most, but I dont like the years more than the total value. Maybe something like 8 years/$210 million. I just dont like the 10 year contract for someone at his age. I dont like the 10 year contract for ANYONE. 8 years is pushing it, but you have to overpay in free agency. I’ll be shocked if Cano gets that historical deal he is looking for.
Whatever it is he will be way overpayed for the production he’ll bring.
I wouldnt offer more than a 3 year deal for him. At 34 he will more than likely already be in decline, no way is he worth the big salary at that stage.
No doubt he’ll get huge bucks/length and turn out to be another disappointment for the contract he recieved though, when will they ever learn….
Now just to see who makes the big offer. Id laugh my head off if it was the Angels AGAIN. Just hoping it aint (couldnt be) my teams the Nats and O’s.
The Pujols contract makes me go a lot lower on this than the 7/$200 talk. Cano isn’t what Pujols was.

Honestly I’ve never seen the big wow in Cano. He puts up great numbers but not ones that justify him getting over 20mil a year. This becomes even more true when you consider that in about 4-5 years he’d be needing a position change.
