Matthew: What teams do you think do the best scouting amatuer talent?

Dan Szymborski: It’s a difficult question as I’d be judging more results than the individual abilities of the scouts on each team. I’m not as connected with individual scouts, I think that’s a McDongenhagen question.

Dan Szymborski: I’ve lived my life as a spokesman for beer and cheese.

stever20: How much should we read into Buehler’s numbers on the road?  At home, he’s got a 1.93 ERA.  On the Road, he’s got a 3.86 ERA.  If LDS goes 5, he would be slotted in games 2 and 6 of the LCS- both of those on the road.

Dan Szymborski: I wouldn’t read much into that.

The Bacon Foundation: What do you have against bacon Dan? You support beer/cheese but don’t mention us? Are you an anti-baconite? What doesn’t taste better with bacon on it?  OK a PB&J maybe..but name something else?

Dan Szymborski: Supporting cheese and beer doesn’t imply a lack of support for bacon.

carrotjuice: The Brewers are just like the 2007 Rockies: they won a game 163, are going to sweep their way to the world series, then will be unceremoniously swept by the Red Sox.

Dan Szymborski: That we be kind of a boring result and I hope it doesn’t happen.

Dan Szymborski: I literally cannot close my eyes and think of a single play from the 2007 World Series.

Walt: Random thought: might a possible RICO case against MLB (see Sheryl’s article) over human trafficking related to international signings lead to expansion in order to raise cash to cover fines? Precedent being the 1987 Collusion fines resulting in the 1990s expansion.

Dan Szymborski: Lawyer stuff is getting out of my wheelhouse. Unlike a lot of nerdy baseball writers, I was not a lawyer before I started writing, though I do come from a family of lawyers and am familiar with the areas that interest me.

Mark: Dan, thanks for the chat. I can’t however, read it past my giant Vlad-projection induced erection.

Dan Szymborski: It’s supposed to last more than six hours.

Dan Szymborski: I still don’t know what to make of that projection. It’s absurdly good and I vaguely feel it’s too aggressive, but I can’t make any real plausible case that is’ aggressive, if that makes sense.

Dan Szymborski: I’m feeling the burn of cognitive dissonance!

Eminor3rd: Does anyone else forget about Ted Williams when you think about all-time greats? I mean, we’re all aware of him, but like, look at those numbers. Routinely north of 200 wRC+. Several 10+ win seasons. OBPs north of .500. Like half his career is not far off from those bionic-Bonds peaks. And age 25-27 seasons erased by WW2.

LFC Mike: What are you expectations for Touki for 2019? Do you think he is a memeber of the Braves rotation? The flashes of brilliance impress.

Dan Szymborski: Next spring should be really fun as the Braves will probably have a dozen realistic options for the rotation. I’m not quite sure how it pans out.

CamdenWarehouse: Which managerial candidates should I be excited about if they interview with the Orioles?

Dan Szymborski: If the list from the Sun is accurate, DeRosa is the only one I’m really curious about.

Dan Szymborski: Hopefully, the interview list isn’t as many retreads as Encina is predicting.

Dan Szymborski: Ausmus? Baker? Scioscia? Santa Claus would projectile vomit in rage.

Dbo: Dan, I was so upset at you for skipping last weeks chat that I made chili with beans and cinnamon and put it on my spaghetti

Dbo: What is your rough estimate of the probability that one of the teams in the Postseason is going to win the world series

Chris: Hi Dan,  when do you anticipate you release ZIPs projections for 2019?  Are we likely to see these pre or post the holiday season?  Thanks for your hard work!

Dan Szymborski: We start rolling them out in November.

OddBall Herrera: Miguel Sano goes into the offseason swearing he’s going to focus and come back dedicated and with better conditioning….then only a week into it he hits a cop with his car outside a nightclub *eyeroll*

Dan Szymborski: Well, these are probably independent. My conditioning is rather poor and I’ve never hit a cop with a car that I’m aware of.

Outta my way, Gyorkass: When your back is against the wall, and you’re down 2 in an elimination game, what better way to deal with it than allowing a run scoring balk & passed ball, then giving up bombs to two well below average hitters in baseball? Woof. How will, and how should, the Rockies pursue this offseason?

Dan Szymborski: The Rockies should react this offseason with a major overhaul of the secondary position players on the team.

Dan Szymborski: They won’t, though. They’ll paper over the problems and hope the team’s strengths will be just good enough so the normals don’t notice their malpractice.

Outta my way, Gyorkass: Will we ever see Jimmy Nelson throw another pitch in the majors?

Dan Szymborski: Yes

Mario: Did Acuna far outplay his projections or is this what was expected of him?

Dan Szymborski: He outplayed his mean projection, sure, but it’s not an outcome that should be considered shocking by any means for such a talented young player.

Bacon Foundation against Slander: We have slab bacon, canadian bacon,Pancetta bacon, fatback, smoked bacon. All delicious. We don’t think of Turkey bacon as bacon…it freaking Turkey for God’s sake! I will let the Turkey Foundation make their ridicluous argument.

Mike: Does Fangraphs have a stat or writeup on what players had the most incorrectly called strikes go against them?  Being a Cubs fan, I seemed to see this happen a lot with Kyle Schwarber, but I wonder where he might stand in relation to other players.  I have to wonder how this affected his at-bats throughout the season, knowing that pitch just off the outside corner could potentially be called a strike against against him.

Dan Szymborski: I don’t believe FG does.

Dan Szymborski: I cannot go into specifics given that these types of negotiations are considered confidential, but people have inquired about this and I turned them down.

Paper Towel Foundation: We don’t play favorites here. Be reminded..all those generic paper towels have put papertowel spokespeople..real or imagined out of work. Bounty, Brawny , Sparkle, Viva…we all clean up your messes.

Dan Szymborski: Generic paper towels feel like rejected notebook paper.

Gil: So The Athletic came out with a list that shows how many analysts each team has. The Mets have 3. The Athletics also have 3. What am I to make of this?

Dan Szymborski: I think it can also be a bit misleading. Some teams outsource some aspects more than others. For example, the White Sox do.

Statomatic: Who wins the BOS v. NYY series?

Dan Szymborski: I agree with the projections on a slight edge fo rthe Yankees

Dan Szymborski: Will probably be Archer

carrotjuice: What are you talking about? The 2007 WS was super memorable! Like the time some batter swung at some pitch and either missed, fouled it off, put it in play, or hit a homer. Classic October moment!

LFC Mike: Yes Ozzie Albies is young. Does the huge split between April and pretty much the rest of the year concern you he didn’t make much if any adjustments?  and can he have a bigger bat? The Brawny guy couldn’t swing that tree he brings to the plate.

Dan Szymborski: Baseball is a game of adjustment. H ewas probably over his head in April in all honesty, but he’s a damn good player.

Dan Szymborski: I’d love to see MLB put a minimum on bat handle thickness.

Dan Szymborski: Well, he’s *been* pretty bad.

Dan Szymborski: I’m not convinced it’s predictive, but that’s an unanswerable debate.

Phan: JP Crawford was bit by the injury bug this season. What do you think he looks like going forward?

Dan Szymborski: He’ll look like J.P. Crawford but with the natural signs of aging, i.e. lines on the face, a tendency towards weight gain in middle years, and possibly variations on male pattern baldness and some graying of hair.

Ben: RE: question about which hitters have had the most bad strikes called against them – I know last year Judge was first by a large margin, specifically on pitches below the knees. Not sure about this year, though based on the eye test that continued.

Matt: How many incremental cases of beer do you think were sold due to the subconscious marketing of Miller-Coors over the past few days?

Dan Szymborski: I hope none!

Cameron: What’s your explanation to the Rockies blocking their young players? Seems odd that they consistently acquire good amatuer talent then block them at the major league level. Difference between scouting department and front office?

Dan Szymborski: I don’t think the front office is very well run at all at the major league level and I don’t believe Bud Black knows how to evaluate offensive talent.

OnWi: Regarding Costas/Kaat completely botching just about everything regarding the Brewers (bad facts, bad name pronounciation, etc) will anyone at MLB do anything? Can we as fans expect better work if there is a next time? (Don’t know the MLB broadcast schedule from here on out)

Dan Szymborski: Pronunciations are harder than you might think. When  you’re talking a lot and saying a hundred names, a weird pronunciation sometimes leaks out.

Matt: Using the middle urinal when you’re the only person in the bathroom is a microaggression. I don’t know why this is something that needs to be said, but clearly the entire world isn’t aware of this fact.

Help: Does Max Muncy get any MVP votes?

Dan Szymborski: I think he’ll get a handful or two of back-ballot votes.

OnWi: I speak in public regularly pronouncing not just names but technical terms of varying types.  It’s called prep. You are being ridiculously kind especially since Costas is supposed to be famous for his preparation.

Matt: Pronunciation is one thing. Referring to Aguilar as Aguilera is another…

Dan Szymborski: I forget which team it was, but it drove me nuts some years ago when Anibal Sanchez was in the playoffs and they were calling him Annabelle

Dan Szymborski: I admit, I don’t like going to the bathroom in public if I can avoid it.

Dan Szymborski: Luckily, press box bathrooms tend to be the general office bathrooms and they’re usually in really good condition

war2d2: There was an idea floated (I think by Len Kasper, but I may be wrong) of changing the rules so that a reliever has to face a minimum of three batters. In your opinion would that improve or worsen the game as a whole? Would you be in favor?

Dan Szymborski: I’d like roster rules over in-game rules, if possible.

Dan Szymborski: I don’t run those numbers, so I don’t really know.
