Outta my way, Gyorkass: There’s been some talk about CIN making headway towards re-entering competitiveness this year, but…where are the wins going to come from in a stacked NL Central? If you take as a given that CIN will finish with, say, at least a winning record, what does that require from MIL/CHC/STL/PIT – multiple or all of them suffering significant regressions?

Dan Szymborski: It’s a bit of a problem for the Reds. It’s hard to see where those wins come from, they still have a lot to do with the rotation.

Dan Szymborski: You can steal enough to get them to 75-80, but the division will be tough and it’s hard to see the roster exploding for more of that.

Dan Szymborski: I was more hopeful about the Reds a year ago, but so many of their young pitchers just haven’t panned out yet

Dan Szymborski: I believe the Marlins are correct here.

brad: Dan, rumors of Cano to Yankees, which makes some sense, they need a LH bat, torres can move over to SS, but Cano is 36, PED suspension and owed 5 years $120MM.  What would have to happen for this to work, Obviously including Ellsbury, but with buyouts he is only owed like $44MM.  Would Diaz added in make sense, or how much money would Sea have to eat to get a deal done?  Adding Diaz means Yanks can save on not bringing back D-Rob.

But if the Mets don’t tender him a contract, you know that he’ll suddenly become an all-star and keep the LOLMets jokes going for a few more years.

Dan Szymborski: That woudl be fun, though I don’t know if it would work out as well culturally as it has with colleges

Mark: Last week, #PadresTwitter blew up over the potential Segura-Leake deal for Wil Myers. Most said that the trade should happen asap, but I couldn’t help but be skeptical of such a deal if it means moving Tatis to 3B for the next 4 years. My argument is that, if you trade for Segura, you have to move him to 2B after this season and keep Tatis Jr. at SS. Doing so would likely mean trading Urias and looking for an established 3B rather than moving Tatis over to 3B. My perspective is that Segura and Tatis stand to both lose value if Segura plays SS and Tatis moves to 3B. Is this a proper way to look at such a trade? Do you see Segura losing value by staying at SS? Would Segura gain/retain value by switching to 2B? Finally, would Tatis lose value switching to 3B?

Dan Szymborski: It would be such a good trade that it would be hard to worry too much about the positional utility.

Dan Szymborski: I think if you can make that actual trade, you make that trade and let the chips falls where they may.

Dan Szymborski: I’d personally prioritize Tatis Jr. at short not segura, as I would have with the O’s and Machado some years ago.

Xolo: What are your thoughts on the Padres apparently trying to use major leaguers (Margot, Hedges, Myers) to acquire better major leaguers (Syndergaard, Segura) while presumably leaving their upper minors untouched?

Dan Szymborski: I don’t think it’s a bad idea when you talk about pieces that you actually want long-term.

Dan Szymborski: My complaints about the Hosmer signing weren’t because I thought the Padres, even when rebuilding, should run away from a core player that they could build around for the next 5 years.

Dan Szymborski: My complaints were because I didn’t think Hosmer was a very good player.

Dan Szymborski: If you get Thor somehow, I mean he’s kinda the best case scenario for what anyone in the Padres will develop into

Dan Szymborski: I don’t have trouble trading value for getting Thor rather than speculative thor

Rox Fan: Any guess as to what Arenado is reasonably looking for in a contract extension? Or is free agency pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point?

Dan Szymborski: He’s going to be pushing $200 million.

Dan Szymborski: What he’s personally looking for, I’m not sure.

DJ Tanner: Would Mets take Soroka, Riley, and Gohara for Syndergaard? Three high ranking MLB ready prospects so they don’t go to immediate “rebuild” and have a solid infield for the future (Alonso, McNeil, Rosario, Riley). Braves get a true ace while still keeping several of their top young arms and can pursue Donaldson in FA while moving Camargo to utility. Seems like a win win to me.

Dan Szymborski: I don’t think it’s a crazy trade, though I think I’d go a little lighter – I think the package is a little better than the Sale package, which I also loved.

Dan Szymborski: But the problem is, I don’t think the Mets will take a non-crazy trade if it’s just prospect-types

Kristen: If PHI signs Corbin, which if any of their incumbent SP’s do they move to make room?  TEX fan here who would love to get Eickhoff back.

Dan Szymborski: I think Eickhoff would be the most likely to be traded

Dan Szymborski: They could. There’s a lot of talent in the organization and sometimes you just hit the PROSPECT SINGULARITY

Dan Szymborski: It’s kinda tricky because there’s only so many guys you can give promotions to.

Dan Szymborski: Then the question would be if the model is properly evaluating the value of having everything in one.
