Eno Sarris Baseball Chat —
11:33 |
: Good morning from the FanGraphs house in Phoenix!
|
11:33 |
:
|
12:01 |
Is there anywehre on FG where I can get an export of Steamer projections with PT/IP adjusted by FG staff? It looks like these adjusted stats are only used in team projections. They would be EXTREMELY valuable to download. |
12:01 |
: I maybe mistaken, but I believe all projections not labeled “Steamer 600” are powered by our depth charts.
|
12:01 |
Will Prince Fielder bounce back? |
12:02 |
: I’m optimistic for him this year, but I do think things like this will continue to crop up.
|
12:02 |
SNOW DAY! ENO TIME! EXCELLENT! |
12:02 |
: Well, except for the FanGraphers trying to get to Arizona!
|
12:02 |
Hey Eno! I’m looking at these available 2B going into a draft: Walker, Kendrick, Utley, Lawrie, Odor, Gyorko, Hill, Baez, Alcantara, Semien, Zobrist (I have Kipnis as a keeper so this would be as a MI/backup primarily, unless Kipnis misses time). Any favorites/targets from that big group? 10 teams, 18 keepers, H2H, 5×5 |
12:03 |
: Odor is looking better and better in my eyes. Lawrie is a decent backup plan, but you’ll want to pair him with someone, maybe like Utley, and hope one is healthy at the right time.
|
12:03 |
Damn you Marcus Semien, you were supposed to have a nice quiet spring so I can draft you in the last round. This is nonsense, and not part of the deal. I want to speak to your mother. |
12:03 |
: Yeah it would be a shame if this made him overvalued.
|
12:04 |
Eno, what do you think of Jose Ramirez in 11-team AL Only? Will he stay in the lineup long enough to play to his steals potential? |
12:05 |
: I’m cautiously optimistic. Lindor is a pretty powerful reason not to love Ramirez, but it’s not like Chisenhall is a settled thing at third.
|
12:05 |
Thoughts on Rodon? Do you think he’ll grab a rotation spot and keep it for the year? I’ve got the second pick for my Dynasty rookie draft and can’t decide between him, Tomas, or Castillo (assuming Moncada is taken). |
12:05 |
: Doubt he has the innings to do a full season, but I’m out on Tomas. I might take Castillo just because I like prospect bats better.
|
12:05 |
Just started using Untapped because i want to do my small part to influence BAR ratings. Do i check in to every beer I drink, or just the first one from a four/six pack? I guess it’s more a style than rule thing, but what say you? |
12:06 |
: We try to stay away from too much analysis based purely on number of checkins for this reason, so do what you like. But from data standpoint, more checkins = better.
|
12:06 |
Standard roto keeper question: Thoughts on Trumbo being more valuable than Kipnis? I feel like I am insane asking it, but I feel like MT has a better chance to bounce back. |
12:07 |
Is G. Cole good enough to be the first pitcher selected for a team? All the “aces” are kept in my league. |
12:07 |
: Yah sure, just try to get a second guy from that group. One of yours will be better than one of the kept aces.
|
12:07 |
and you are right to be craving Trillium, especially their Four Point Ale. Great stuff. |
12:07 |
: There’s some on it’s way to my house right now!!!
|
12:07 |
Would Josh Hamilton be facing a year-long suspension if he wasn’t such an on-field disappointment with an albatross contract? Is the league having wide discretion over substance abuse and conduct penalties an inevitable invitation to assist teams in mitigating bad contracts? |
12:08 |
: I think it’s just more interest and attention in this case, from everyone.
|
12:08 |
![]() MLB Photo day is the best. |
12:08 |
Loved your article on punting. I’m in a H2H league. What do you think about drafting the good closers who may be on the DL (Jansen, Parnel, Doolittle, McGee) so they can help you dominate saves in the playoffs which I have always made. |
12:09 |
: If they cheaper for starting on DL, absolutely I’m into it. A little worried about Parnell, just because if that team falls out of it, they could easily trade him or take another look at a different reliever.
|
12:09 |
Due to either current ADP or upside, I find myself liking almost the entire Pirates roster other than Cervelli. How many players is too many players to draft from the same team? |
12:09 |
Also, if I have Stanton and Yelich, is targeting Ozuna in a H2H league silly? |
12:10 |
: I’m not too worried about this. You have the rest of your squad, and get to the playoffs before you worry about what happens in the playoffs. If it’s roto, don’t even think about it. In H2H, maybe halfway through the season think about trading a guy or two for end game reasons.
|
12:11 |
Had Jester King Snorkel a few day ago- It was great. After taste of blue cheese= MIND BLOWN |
12:12 |
: I had a smoked sour from Sante Adairius and it tasted like sour bacon what is going on.
|
12:12 |
The Fangraphs house in Phoenix….I can only imagine what kind of wild regressions you guys are doing. |
12:13 |
: Spent last night talking to Kiley about all the players I can’t figure out. I think he convinced me that Shane Greene still has upside and can figure out the change or the curve.
|
12:13 |
:
|
12:13 |
Would you say Josh Hamilton’s contract the worst in mlb? |
12:13 |
: Melvin Upton Ryan Howard Josh Hamilton… I think Howard.
|
12:13 |
ZiPS has Votto at around 100 games, Steamer around 135. What does ENO have him at? |
12:14 |
: 145. Arthur’s regression statement on injured players shows a link to past injury, but not one as strong as those projections suggest, IMO.
|
12:14 |
IMO everyone is down on Mauer too much. Average will come back up, if healthy he will get his 80+ RBI’s. More runs with lineup being better. |
12:14 |
: I’m interested in him, yes.
|
12:15 |
What are your $1 target pitchers NL Only? Do you think a SANTANA approach can work in today’s pitcher heavy market. SANTAN = One Ace and 8-$1 pitchers. |
12:17 |
: I don’t have a moniker for my approach, but I buy two bottom of first tier pitchers, a mid-tier guy, and a few $1 guys. Modified Santana. DeSclafani, Rubby, Webster — are these guys going to go for more? Treinen, Morton?
|
12:17 |
Statistical odds that Lucas Duda breaks the single-season HR record in 2015 – 45%, 75%? I lean towards the 72.32% chance he does. |
12:18 |
Doobie Herrera… Go |
12:18 |
Seriously, what happened to that guy? |
12:18 |
: huh.
|
12:18 |
How do you pronounce this brewery Troeg’s? How are you supposed to pronounce it? |
12:18 |
: I am *not* the person to ask on this one. We’ve already recorded me butchering names twice on this trip.
|
12:19 |
Burning Spear is so dope! |
12:19 |
:
|
12:19 |
What’s a realistic power projection for Kipnis this year? How many homers can he hit? |
12:19 |
: I’m manipulating his projections to 17-18 homers. Doesn’t seem crazy to me. Oblique hurt last year.
|
12:20 |
how many beers were consumed |
12:20 |
: Many. The fridge is 80% beer.
|
12:20 |
It’s so cliche, but who is this years Kluber? I’m thinking someone drafted around 200 overall. Maybe someone like Shoemaker or Paxton? Maybe Wheeler? He’s going around #200 overall. |
12:21 |
: Wheeler has more pedigree. Shoemaker had more success than Kluber had going in. Me and Ray Flowers were talking about this. He said Shane Greene, that’s a good one. I think maybe Anthony deSclafani because I really like the shape of his changeup despite results so far.
|
12:21 |
Are the A’s actually good? |
12:22 |
: I was never that down on them. I said to Billy Beane that our projections still had them in the thick of things, and he winked.
|
12:22 |
What is the best place to find good ADP data ? |
12:22 |
: NFBC ADP is the best.
|
12:22 |
“Wolten Kong” is a strong ballplayer name spoonerism. |
12:22 |
Holdzkum should be rostered for his name alone |
12:22 |
Man your beergraphs ranking on modelo especial is f’d up. |
12:23 |
: Luding.
|
12:23 |
I’m doing my first FG Ottenue league…How do I adjust my values going from 260 budget to 400. we are using FG points |
12:23 | : You can use the calculator on our site! |
12:23 |
You have Joe Kelly ranked ~50 spots higher than the FG consensus. What do you see that the rest of the guys are missing? |
12:24 |
: His individual pitches are good! He has velocity! A good change! A good breaker! His command is bad but not Allen Webster bad! I think he just needs to figure out how to put things in the right order! My exclamation mark button is broken!
|
12:24 |
Hey Eno! Who’s the better keeper? Soler, Polanco, Machado or Myers? |
12:24 |
: Soler Soler Soler and Soler.
|
12:24 |
My David Price and Justin Upton for someone’s Tulo? Reasonable, or still not enough? |
12:25 |
: Need more information without getting a book. Like is this pre-keeper selection or post draft, how deep.
|
12:25 |
Hi Eno. Which prospect would you pick in a 4×4 rotisserie keeper league farm draft — Gallo or Moncada? |
12:25 |
: Moncada I think!
|
12:25 |
I’m totally on board with the principle of the vast majority of keepers being hitters. But in a league that DOESN’T use CI/MI spots and has just one Utility spot, would you consider keeping a higher proportion of pitchers? I have Altuve, but I also have Wong and would love to keep him. Worth keeping over an SP who’s in the preseason top 20-top 30 range? |
12:25 |
: Without an MI slot, I don’t think it makes sense to keep a bench hitter over a top pitcher.
|
12:25 |
What did the TSA agent say as you clink-clanked your way through airport security? |
12:26 |
: Well had to check that bag, but nobody blinked when I did a dance over the weight (48.2! no scale at home!) or sniffed my bag when it came off the conveyor.
|
12:26 |
Guesstimation of when Winker takes an OF spot in Cincinnati? |
12:27 |
: Some point this year. Good OBP guy, basically ready. Might be late.
|
12:27 |
If Tomas is the outfield him or Trumbo in 5×5? |
12:28 |
: Trumbo.
|
12:28 |
Impressive collection of beer you brought to Phoenix!, but what a bunch of deadbeats you work with. Thats like 200$+ of sours. Your colleagues live in Portland, North Carolina, Florida, all beer meccas themselves, did anyone else bring anything? |
12:29 |
: No! Whatever. They didn’t want to check bags I guess. Trip to the store was fruitful: Founders, Odell, Stone, Rogue, Left Hand, Victory….
|
12:30 |
Odubel Herrera’s short term future in Philadelphia will be full of ______ |
12:30 |
: hits not much power and not great defense if forced into short AND DOOBIES
|
12:30 |
: (I’m not suggesting he smokes pot)
|
12:30 |
:
|
12:31 |
Is Brandon Finnegan a good $1 target in an 11-team AL only Roto keeper league? Who else fits the description, especially amongst pitchers? |
12:32 |
: If you can get him for that, yes. I think he’ll start at some point. Other guys I like around there are Dan Straily, Nicholas Tropeano, TJ House, Nate Karns.
|
12:32 |
More worrysome on the injury front: Homer Bailey or Mike Minor? |
12:32 |
: Bailey because his upside is better.
|
12:32 |
It seems like the Reds and Rangers are the 2 easiest teams to dream to 100 wins and nightmare to 100 losses. Any other team fit in here? |
12:33 |
: A team with no depth maybe. How deep are the Yankees?
|
12:33 |
Baez or Kang for SS for a team looking to build for 2016? |
12:34 |
: You’re setting me up, man. I’m out on Baez and in on Kang. I’ll admit that Baez’ upside may be greater, but makeup and k results have me out.
|
12:34 |
Here me out on this one: if a 36 year old slugger was killing it in AAA, isnt that more impressive than a 20 year old doing it? Im 36, 20 year olds run circles around me in every sport I play. I’ve just discovered the next market inneficiency. |
12:34 |
: Hahah usually the age thing is about a 26 year old beating up on Triple-A, so you have to remember back those sprightly days.
|
12:34 |
snow day here in the mid-atlantic. scotch ale aged on ardbeg scotch soak oak chips or Enjoy By clone IPA? |
12:35 |
: Scotch for the snow.
|
12:35 |
If you go to a cubs game this week, make sure to stop in Portillos for a chocolate cake shake. Life changing. (litterally takes years off your life) |
12:35 |
: I have enjoyed that establishment and agree.
|
12:35 |
What’s the deal with the UFO “unfiltered” beer? Does it make a difference in taste or is it just a marketing gimmick? |
12:36 |
: Just a gimmick. Most beer is ‘unfiltered.’ Maybe you use a machine that sort of filters the beer, but it’s never run through a filter.
|
12:36 |
What stadiums you plan on hitting up this week? Can you write a beer map of any of them? |
12:36 |
: They pretty bad down here. I think you can get Odell at Salt Lick, and Dale’s there and a couple other places, but that’s it.
|
12:36 |
Will Stacast data be huge in predicting injury? |
12:37 |
: Maybe spotting it earlier, yes. If you can see a drastic difference in how a guy is taking routes in the outfield…
|
12:37 |
Reason for optimism after seeing Eovaldi deploy his splitter yesterday? |
12:37 |
: I didn’t see it, but Sullivan has me a little geeked on it.
|
12:37 |
is their a FG HQ in each timezone? |
12:37 |
: If you count Zimmerman, yes.
|
12:37 |
Keep Alex Wood in a 12-teamer keep-10, or throw him back and try to draft him/others of similar tier? Feels like he’s going to have a big year, and he’s young… could regret throwing him back. |
12:38 |
: He’s keepable in there.
|
12:38 |
I read an article about yeast that was saying that until about 130 years ago, pretty much all beers were sours. |
12:38 |
: They were stored in barrels, and many were wild ales, so yeah.
|
12:38 |
Instead of punting a cat why not just play Ottoneu 4×4? |
12:38 |
: Well the idea of punting is to gain an advantage elsewhere.
|
12:38 |
Who are some of the players that you think will not live up the hype and expectations people are putting on them this year? Maybe someone like Rendon or Carrasco? |
12:39 |
: A little worried about Carrasco because he got a velocity boost last year and has had command and injury issues in the past.
|
12:39 |
: And what if Stroman is real life awesome but doesn’t have the K% to be a fantasy ace?
|
12:39 |
Nice punting article. Do you ever roto-punt? Or the softer, worry less about BA or W? I was thinking this year I might add a .8ish multiplier to context stats (RBI, R, W), but you dig a little, and BA, steals, saves, are all pretty wobbly. I guess my question is, how do you weight different stats that count? Do you bother, or is it the secret key? |
12:39 |
: Never roto punt.
|
12:40 |
If you had to eat one of your fellow writers at Fangraphs, who would it be and what would be the best beer pairing? |
12:41 |
: David Wiers because I like Korean food. Maybe with Hite.
|
12:41 |
who is #1 on your interview list? |
12:41 |
: Joey Votto. Brandon McCarthy. Zack Greinke.
|
12:41 |
Yeah, do you know why Steamer seems to give everyone a low games count? It snars up my chads. |
12:42 |
: It’s a thing that comes from using the depth charts — if you look at things that way, you want to list the third guy at a position, you have to give him PA, and most years he gets PA, but some years the top guy is healthy all year.
|
12:42 |
I would totally love to see you do a grips piece/interview with Felix |
12:42 |
: So would I.
|
12:42 |
Couple more ludes is all daddy needs for a good night… |
12:42 |
: HEYO
|
12:43 |
I like Ike. Do you like Ike? As a platoon option, of course |
12:43 |
: I guess so. I mean I think he has decent discipline and power, but the floor is real low, and the ceiling is not as nice as the 30-homer year, not any more.
|
12:43 |
Pronounce Troeg’s with the umlaut |
12:43 |
What’s going to happen with Rafael Soriano? Dodgers gonna pick him up? |
12:44 |
: Keep thinking so, but maybe not.
|
12:44 |
Ever been interested in attending Burning Man? |
12:44 |
: I have never been. Have been interested!
|
12:44 |
I tried to get this answered on the podcast, but I was curious on your thoughts on taking a top closer and combining them with a lower K but strong ratio starter. Say Chapman+Alvarez or Betances+Hughes/Fister |
12:45 |
: It works to make the two into a duo that works, yes. But I want MORE. I want Doolittle and Cobb, the chance to have both things.
|
12:45 |
I am concerned by the disturbing lack of ludes last week, so I just wanted to say clubfooted duck-walk, pancake-friendly super soaker birthday surprise. |
12:45 |
Sounds likeyou guys are wasting 20% of your fridge space |
12:45 |
: Well lookie here we got weird quick.
|
12:45 |
Who is all at the house? |
12:46 |
: Right now? Brad Johnson, Jeff Sullivan, Kiley McDaniel cooking eggs, Carson Carsoning somewhere. Daves getting a car.
|
12:46 |
I faced Descalfini in college- Dude really knows how to pitch; he shut us (and me) down. |
12:47 |
: Nice. Plus he trips everyone up when it comes to writing his name, so he keeps us on our toes.
|
12:47 |
Is Tanaka a better hail mary sleeper than Gausman or Gio? Like, you can find another Gio, but not another healthy Tanaka? |
12:47 |
: Definitely better than Gausman, but Gio has shown some good seasons and isn’t as much of a risk.
|
12:48 |
Which MLB player has the best name to base a beer name off of? |
12:48 | : |
12:48 |
Sleeper and the Bust has never been better. Loving the Sarris / Sporer combo. It’s all content! Some pods have good content…but turns into 50% kibbitzing about nothing. |
12:49 |
: I have two young kids. All I can kibbitz about is beer… I don’t even have enough time to watch television in the hour I have to myself after they go to bed and before I drop dead.
|
12:49 |
Do you feel more confident with Street or Britton as a closer this season? |
12:49 |
: Britton. health.
|
12:50 |
Which is more likely: Steve Pearce gets 550 ABs or Steve Pearce gets under 200 ABs? |
12:50 |
: If you upped the second number, I’d take the under. I think he’ll be useful against lefties, but I’d take <350 over >550.
|
12:50 |
Goshohgoshohgoshohgosh! Who do you keep as a sixth keeper, Soler or Machado? |
12:50 |
: I’m no longer seeing straight on Soler. Soler.
|
12:50 |
are you buying any allen craig and hoping for a trade that gives him playing time? |
12:50 |
: only in onlies.
|
12:51 |
Everyone loves Marcus Stroman, and rightfully so, but what about another young *short* starter in the AL named Yordano Ventura. Do you think he can be one of those guys you get later in your draft that actually finishes among the top 25 starters in the league? I seem to be higher on him that most… |
12:52 |
: His secondary pitches didn’t perform as admirably as Stroman’s last year, but he has more velocity. He’s definitely a good/great pitcher on the cusp.
|
12:53 |
Why the love for Soler? Unproven at major leauge level, below league average walk rate.projected for more Hrs at the major league level (per steamer) than he hit in any one year in MiLB. ZiPS looks more reaosnable, at .250 with a dozen homers. |
12:54 |
: The adjustments he made in the minor leagues suggest better contact and more patience coming, the debut he had was outstanding for his age, his power is impressive and he doesn’t have the contact problems that most power hitters his age have around him.
|
12:54 |
: In short, it’s a lot of the things I loved about Rizzo the last two years.
|
12:55 |
How come American sours are better than Belgian Sours? Belgium was he birthplace but all of the belgian’s i have had are not sour enough. |
12:55 |
: American craft beer > other craft beer. Sorry, said it.
|
12:55 |
Maybe a silly ottoneu question, is the free agent budget based on money not spent in the draft? Rules aren’t clear. |
12:55 |
: yes.
|
12:55 |
![]() Wendy Peffercorn. |
12:56 |
: Gut gemacht frau Pfeffercorn.
|
12:56 |
:
|
12:57 |
who is your breakout 1b this year? |
12:57 |
: Is there one every year? Belt, maybe.
|
12:57 |
What would you suitcase smell like? |
12:57 |
: Was worried it would smell like broken beer.
|
12:57 |
Why so down on Tomas? Not saying I disagree, but Trumbo over him? That’s bad…. |
12:57 |
: Chamberlain did a piece that regressed his Cuban K/BB to about 33/6.
|
12:58 |
Billy Beane winked at you? |
12:58 |
: And I’m pretty sure I saw him blanch when I mentioned having an offer out to Chase Headley.
|
12:58 |
What is the point of Phoenix? Seems kinda insane to have this huge sprawling city in the middle of the desert. |
12:58 |
: Strip mall to strip mall, I wonder this myself.
|
12:58 |
What is the FG House? is it like a college frat house but nerdier? |
12:59 |
: Just rented a house for our yearly retreat in spring training.
|
12:59 |
Think Salazar puts it together this year? |
12:59 |
: Given price, I’ll take him over Carrasco this year.
|
12:59 |
Do the Cardinals really poop vanilla sprinkles? |
12:59 |
: And do they taste like poop or vanilla?
|
12:59 |
what is a realistic HR ceiling for Heyward? |
12:59 |
: 22?
|
1:00 |
The Blue Jays could be in trouble if Bautista or E5 go down. |
1:00 |
: Yeah they have some depth pieces but already using them at second and in OF with Saunders hurt.
|
1:00 |
does Castillo move down on the rankings with the injury? Can you rank the following in keeper leagues (Castillo, Pompei, Pollock, Blackmon) |
1:00 |
: I have Blackmon ahead of him on value this year. More balanced line.
|
1:00 |
So Schoenfield had MIA 20 and NYM 10; Keri NYM 21 I think, MIA 8…who’s right who’s wrong |
1:01 |
: I’ll take the Mets for second wild card contenders, so I like em 10-12.
|
1:01 |
thoughts on rogue’s voodoo doughtnut/ maple bacon / weird flavors beer? haven’t had it, is it just a gimmick? |
1:01 |
: Kind of gross.
|
1:01 |
Beer can also make your diction unfiltered. |
1:01 |
I mean “diction” in the original sense. |
1:01 |
I’d like to see a map of your journey around a ballpark, kinda like they do in family circus cartoons. not in a creepy way, just out of curiosities sake. |
1:02 |
: Hah! Beer, bathroom, seat, bathroom, beer, seat. Would be fun.
|
1:02 |
eno i really disagree on the UFO thing, huge difference in taste, feel, and nutrition in fact. google it |
1:03 |
: Some beers are less filtered, yes. Three Floyds uses a centerfuge. Others use machines like that. But if you homebrew, you know that the grain itself is a filter, and that’s not ‘fitlering’ like people think of it.
|
1:03 |
Wait, we’re punting cats now? Finally, those damn murderous animals. |
1:03 |
: Wait hold on
|
1:03 |
how unhappy is sullivan to be in the sun of arizona? |
1:03 |
: He likes it outside!
|
1:03 |
I thought I was on board with all of your advice, and then I read that Daniel Tiger is the worst show that your kid watches. Please expound on this. |
1:03 |
: So. Boring.
|
1:04 |
How much change do you imagine xScore will go through as you gain more information into newer beers? |
1:04 |
: Already planning part two, with ABV/Style ABV instead of straight ABV, and AVG BAR per Brewery instead of Brewery BAR.
|
1:04 |
Eno, keep 2 of 3, $9 Cobb, $1 Stroeman, $5 Betts? Pitching will be thin in the auction. Thanks |
1:05 |
: Gotta be Stroman and Betts, even if we getting excited.
|
1:05 |
Hello Eno, what’s your projections for Pompey? A good pick for keeper leagues? |
1:05 |
: Better in OBP and deeper leagues, may not have a great batting average or tons of power.
|
1:05 |
When is a jar not a jar? |
1:05 |
: When it’s ajar.
|
1:06 |
I had a dream I was enjoying a beer with Eno.. Only to look to my left and Eno was 15 years old.. |
1:06 |
: I had a dream last night that Sullivan taught me a knuckle curve and Kiley caught it.
|

THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE! |
1:07 |
woah, is this like the real world for FG’ers? |
1:07 |
Who is partly at the house? |
1:07 |
: ain’t no party like a fangraphs house party
|
1:07 |
I’m in a K/9 (min 37 IP) league. Thinking I spend little on SP and go spend money on Chapman, Betances, Holland etc. High K/9 RP. I already have Hamels and Porcello as my SP with need for 3 more. |
1:07 |
: Yes.
|
1:08 |
who is this years dozier? |
1:08 |
: Again, do these happen every year? Odor? Wong?
|
1:08 |
Which third baseman would you rather have on your real MLB team: OBP/SLG of .300/.600 or OBP/SLG of .600/.300? |
1:08 |
: The power.
|
1:09 |
What’s your best guess at the probability that Harvey will be pitching the first 3 weeks of September? |
1:10 |
: 70%? They say 200 okay if they make playoffs. I think he’ll take a long break over All-Star break, maybe a 15-dayer at some point.
|
1:10 |
Hi when I saw in last weeks chat the shins song you posted up it reminded me of work and the fact that such artist such as the shins along with arcade fire and band of horses to name a few have made their way into the musac system . My question (auction league 16 teams)is with starting pitching so deep would you forgo an ace and perhaps try for 2 second tier pitchers or some sort of combination of lesser pitchers, Thanks |
1:11 |
: I always do this! Yes do it!
|
1:12 |
http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… Get two of those guys.
: There’s gold from ten to twenty on my rankings. |
1:13 |
Best guess in the 5th starter sweepstakes…Norris or Salazar? |
1:13 |
: Salazar. If Norris healthy, I like him too though.
|
1:13 |
Also Soler put on 25lb over the offseason and everyone says he looks like a monster now. |
1:13 |
Why can some guys get by on fastball/slider as a starter without platoon splits? |
1:14 |
: Velocity and command. The slider gets platoon splits because if it drifts over the plate, it drifts right into opposite-handed bat path. But if you can avoid drifting over the plate…
|
1:14 |
What do you think Brett Gardner does this year? Where would you put his value in a 12 team auction? |
1:14 |
: Same old. OF2/3. Solid.
|
1:14 |
General strat. question. I was in a 12 tm mixed where 15 SP were taken in the first 43 picks. I didn’t have any so I panicked and reached for Lester, Cole and Iwakuma much earlier than normal. Mistake? |
1:15 |
: I would have quit after Cole and taken a break.
|
1:15 |
Potential MLB comp for Mr. Jung Ho Kang? |
1:16 |
: Jhonny Peralta floor for me. (healthy young) JJ Hardy more likely.
|
1:16 |
Is drunk Carson even more Carsony than regular Carson? |
1:16 |
: so so much
|
1:16 |
Carrasco or Bundy? PRETTY PLEASE |
1:16 |
: Carrasco
|
1:16 |
Beaver butts do taste like vanilla. It’s actually an ingredient in some ice creams. |
1:16 |
Why do people say that Sanchez would be a lights out closer and that he “misses bats”? His swinging strike rate last year was 6.2%, the lowest of any pitcher with at least one save. He gets a lot of ground balls, but he’s no Zach Britton (and Britton also has a much better swinging strike rate at 13.1%). Sanchez does have a nice fastball, but it feels like he’s getting a lot of hype off of last year’s small sample size. |
1:17 |
: Guess it’s from watching more than looking at results. I do think more whiffs would come… if he was in the pen.
|
1:17 |
Anyone wanna fess up to sniffing Eno’s hair this week? |
1:17 |
: Please let’s not.
|
1:17 |
you can roto punt— i rotopunt average, because its stupid. |
1:17 |
: I mean not to the point that you get zeroes or ones in it.
|
1:17 |
You buying or selling Steven Souza? It’s tough to get a guage on him… |
1:18 |
: I might sell at the hype price, wait for possible struggles early in season due to K%, and try to buy at depressed price. I believe the ability is there, but not sure he’ll do it right away.
|
1:18 |
Why haven’t you done positional rankings yet? |
1:19 |
: We did. Follow the link to the top 300 / draft spreadsheet. I’ll ask the writers to break out their tiered rankings soon.
|
1:19 |
I’m thinking of a late round combo of Kang and Semien at SS. What say you, Eno? |
1:20 |
: Yes. decently low floor, but two shots at good ceiling.
|
1:20 |
Eno, picking .300/.600 is mathmatically wrong |
1:20 |
: Damn.
|
1:20 |
Zips has Gattis for only 20 hr, which seems low. What are you expecting from him and is he worth drafting in like the mid 80s in a 12 team mixed? |
1:20 |
: Two catcher league? Yes. Even in a one-catcher league, I’d *jump* after 90/100.
|
1:20 |
I know youre from Negril, but have you spent any time in Port Antonio? My personal fav part of the island, Anthony Bourdain went there for one of his shows. Brought back fun memories. |
1:21 |
: Saw that show but have only been once. Did find that show fascinating. Did a good job talking about the issues.
|
1:21 |
Do you have any advice on how I should start my own database? Should I learn SQL, Python, or R? How exactly should I start out? Any advice would be wonderful! |
1:22 |
: SQL super easy, and there’s good stuff out there from Colin Wyers about how to build your own baseball database using SQL, so I’d go that route. I did. I’m leaning R next.
|
1:22 |
It would be nice to import custom projections into the Auction Calculator. |
1:22 |
: Might have to wait for 2.0, but now Zips should be in there, and I think we’ll even get some QS and HLD info soon.
|
1:22 |
whats the best hangover cure? |
1:22 |
: Gatorade, eggs.
|
1:23 |
Have you heard The Shins before they were called The Shins? It was the same lineup, but they were known as Flake Music. It’s good stuff–kind of Built to Spill-ish. |
1:23 |
: No! But I did see the Shins with 400 other people in Paris and that was awesome.
|
1:23 |
Can you please rank Wily Peralta, Jesse Hahn, Daniel Norris and Chase Anderson? |
1:23 |
: Hahn Peralta Anderson Norris
|
1:23 |
Kang = Superman |
1:23 |
Is Roark worth picking up? He is on the waiver wire and wondering what is his upside is? |
1:23 |
: We saw his upside. But he’s a sixth guy for now.
|
1:24 |
Most important question of the chat: Did you wear makeup on your TV appearance? |
1:24 |
: No! But I have on a 120 appearance and I kept it on for a meetup and it was weird.
|
1:24 |
All my credit cards are maxed out. Where can I get a good merkin for cash? |
1:24 |
: amazing.
|
1:24 |
Any recommendations for a sour beer that’s pretty widely available? I’m not in an area where we get much craft beer beyond the standards |
1:24 |
: The sour sisters from Goose Island (Halia, Gillian, Juliette) are really good, and available.
|
1:24 |
When I’m walking Eno, I like to strut my stuff. It’s possible that I’m strung out. I’m not high as a kite but I still may just stop to sniff your hair. |
1:25 |
: oh god sixth grade just came crashing down around me
|
1:25 |
Any spring training stats you’re paying attention to? |
1:25 |
: K% stabilizes the quickest…
|
1:25 |
So I don’t wan to spend more than $40 on Trout ($200 limit), I’m going to open the bid at $40 and let the price go up from there. Thats to high in my league, he’s valued around $32 with the $200 cap. I’ll find my stats elsewhere this year. |
1:25 |
: I’ve only bought Trout at market price in an auction year once, and it was a shallow league which I won by hitting all my cheaper sleepers.
|
1:26 |
Convince Dave to send you to Cuba to do a grips piece |
1:26 |
: Literally talked about this last night. I’m German!
|
1:26 |
What’s the absolute latest round you’ll draft your FIRST pitcher in? I’m thinking about waiting until the 5th round this year just cause |
1:26 |
: That’s about the earliest for me. Try to get two between 5 and 10.
|
1:27 |
best hangover cure 1 banana and a 24oz coconut water |

We need a drunk FG podcast! |
1:27 |
: BG maybe
|
1:28 |
If I was basing my upcoming move to Denver, Seattle, or Portland on taprooms and breweries alone, where should I move? |
1:28 |
: Portland and Jeff Sullivan agrees.
|
1:29 |
: Okay I really have to pee and Paul Sporer just landed so Next Week!

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
House or Salazar for the Cleveland 5th starter spot? Gavin Floyd seems to be stalling progress over there…
