Is there anywehre on FG where I can get an export of Steamer projections with PT/IP adjusted by FG staff? It looks like these adjusted stats are only used in team projections. They would be EXTREMELY valuable to download.

12:01
Eno Sarris: I maybe mistaken, but I believe all projections not labeled “Steamer 600” are powered by our depth charts.

12:01
Comment From Matt
Will Prince Fielder bounce back?

12:02
Eno Sarris: I’m optimistic for him this year, but I do think things like this will continue to crop up.

SNOW DAY! ENO TIME! EXCELLENT!

12:02
Eno Sarris: Well, except for the FanGraphers trying to get to Arizona!

12:02
Comment From Jon
Hey Eno! I’m looking at these available 2B going into a draft: Walker, Kendrick, Utley, Lawrie, Odor, Gyorko, Hill, Baez, Alcantara, Semien, Zobrist (I have Kipnis as a keeper so this would be as a MI/backup primarily, unless Kipnis misses time). Any favorites/targets from that big group? 10 teams, 18 keepers, H2H, 5×5

12:03
Eno Sarris: Odor is looking better and better in my eyes. Lawrie is a decent backup plan, but you’ll want to pair him with someone, maybe like Utley, and hope one is healthy at the right time.

12:03
Comment From Lenard
Damn you Marcus Semien, you were supposed to have a nice quiet spring so I can draft you in the last round. This is nonsense, and not part of the deal. I want to speak to your mother.

12:03
Eno Sarris: Yeah it would be a shame if this made him overvalued.

12:04
Comment From Matt
Eno, what do you think of Jose Ramirez in 11-team AL Only? Will he stay in the lineup long enough to play to his steals potential?

12:05
Eno Sarris: I’m cautiously optimistic. Lindor is a pretty powerful reason not to love Ramirez, but it’s not like Chisenhall is a settled thing at third.

12:05
Comment From Michael
Thoughts on Rodon? Do you think he’ll grab a rotation spot and keep it for the year? I’ve got the second pick for my Dynasty rookie draft and can’t decide between him, Tomas, or Castillo (assuming Moncada is taken).

12:05
Eno Sarris: Doubt he has the innings to do a full season, but I’m out on Tomas. I might take Castillo just because I like prospect bats better.

12:05
Comment From Jono
Just started using Untapped because i want to do my small part to influence BAR ratings. Do i check in to every beer I drink, or just the first one from a four/six pack? I guess it’s more a style than rule thing, but what say you?

12:06
Eno Sarris: We try to stay away from too much analysis based purely on number of checkins for this reason, so do what you like. But from data standpoint, more checkins = better.

12:06
Comment From Franklin
Standard roto keeper question: Thoughts on Trumbo being more valuable than Kipnis? I feel like I am insane asking it, but I feel like MT has a better chance to bounce back.

12:07
Comment From KB
Is G. Cole good enough to be the first pitcher selected for a team? All the “aces” are kept in my league.

12:07
Eno Sarris: Yah sure, just try to get a second guy from that group. One of yours will be better than one of the kept aces.

12:07
Comment From Jono
and you are right to be craving Trillium, especially their Four Point Ale. Great stuff.

12:07
Eno Sarris: There’s some on it’s way to my house right now!!!

Comment From mtsw
Would Josh Hamilton be facing a year-long suspension if he wasn’t such an on-field disappointment with an albatross contract? Is the league having wide discretion over substance abuse and conduct penalties an inevitable invitation to assist teams in mitigating bad contracts?

12:08
Eno Sarris: I think it’s just more interest and attention in this case, from everyone.

12:08
Comment From Maxamuz

MLB Photo day is the best.

Comment From Punting with a twist
Loved your article on punting. I’m in a H2H league. What do you think about drafting the good closers who may be on the DL (Jansen, Parnel, Doolittle, McGee) so they can help you dominate saves in the playoffs which I have always made.

12:09
Eno Sarris: If they cheaper for starting on DL, absolutely I’m into it. A little worried about Parnell, just because if that team falls out of it, they could easily trade him or take another look at a different reliever.

12:09
Comment From KB
Due to either current ADP or upside, I find myself liking almost the entire Pirates roster other than Cervelli. How many players is too many players to draft from the same team?

12:09
Comment From Lenard
Also, if I have Stanton and Yelich, is targeting Ozuna in a H2H league silly?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I’m not too worried about this. You have the rest of your squad, and get to the playoffs before you worry about what happens in the playoffs. If it’s roto, don’t even think about it. In H2H, maybe halfway through the season think about trading a guy or two for end game reasons.

12:11
Comment From Rico
Had Jester King Snorkel a few day ago- It was great. After taste of blue cheese= MIND BLOWN

The Fangraphs house in Phoenix….I can only imagine what kind of wild regressions you guys are doing.

12:13

Comment From Maxamuz
ZiPS has Votto at around 100 games, Steamer around 135. What does ENO have him at?

12:14
Eno Sarris: 145. Arthur’s regression statement on injured players shows a link to past injury, but not one as strong as those projections suggest, IMO.

12:14
Comment From Rico
IMO everyone is down on Mauer too much. Average will come back up, if healthy he will get his 80+ RBI’s. More runs with lineup being better.

12:14
Eno Sarris: I’m interested in him, yes.

12:15
Comment From Madigan
What are your $1 target pitchers NL Only? Do you think a SANTANA approach can work in today’s pitcher heavy market. SANTAN = One Ace and 8-$1 pitchers.

12:17
Eno Sarris: I don’t have a moniker for my approach, but I buy two bottom of first tier pitchers, a mid-tier guy, and a few $1 guys. Modified Santana. DeSclafani, Rubby, Webster — are these guys going to go for more? Treinen, Morton?

12:17

It’s so cliche, but who is this years Kluber? I’m thinking someone drafted around 200 overall. Maybe someone like Shoemaker or Paxton? Maybe Wheeler? He’s going around #200 overall.

12:21
Eno Sarris: Wheeler has more pedigree. Shoemaker had more success than Kluber had going in. Me and Ray Flowers were talking about this. He said Shane Greene, that’s a good one. I think maybe Anthony deSclafani because I really like the shape of his changeup despite results so far.

12:21

You have Joe Kelly ranked ~50 spots higher than the FG consensus. What do you see that the rest of the guys are missing?

12:24
Eno Sarris: His individual pitches are good! He has velocity! A good change! A good breaker! His command is bad but not Allen Webster bad! I think he just needs to figure out how to put things in the right order! My exclamation mark button is broken!

Hi Eno. Which prospect would you pick in a 4×4 rotisserie keeper league farm draft — Gallo or Moncada?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Moncada I think!

12:25
Comment From Keeper Konundrum
I’m totally on board with the principle of the vast majority of keepers being hitters. But in a league that DOESN’T use CI/MI spots and has just one Utility spot, would you consider keeping a higher proportion of pitchers? I have Altuve, but I also have Wong and would love to keep him. Worth keeping over an SP who’s in the preseason top 20-top 30 range?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Without an MI slot, I don’t think it makes sense to keep a bench hitter over a top pitcher.

Here me out on this one: if a 36 year old slugger was killing it in AAA, isnt that more impressive than a 20 year old doing it? Im 36, 20 year olds run circles around me in every sport I play. I’ve just discovered the next market inneficiency.

What’s the deal with the UFO “unfiltered” beer? Does it make a difference in taste or is it just a marketing gimmick?

12:36
Eno Sarris: Just a gimmick. Most beer is ‘unfiltered.’ Maybe you use a machine that sort of filters the beer, but it’s never run through a filter.

I read an article about yeast that was saying that until about 130 years ago, pretty much all beers were sours.

Instead of punting a cat why not just play Ottoneu 4×4?

12:38

12:38
Comment From Cason Jollette
Who are some of the players that you think will not live up the hype and expectations people are putting on them this year? Maybe someone like Rendon or Carrasco?

12:39
Eno Sarris: A little worried about Carrasco because he got a velocity boost last year and has had command and injury issues in the past.

12:39
Eno Sarris: And what if Stroman is real life awesome but doesn’t have the K% to be a fantasy ace?

12:39
Comment From Snarfle
Nice punting article. Do you ever roto-punt? Or the softer, worry less about BA or W? I was thinking this year I might add a .8ish multiplier to context stats (RBI, R, W), but you dig a little, and BA, steals, saves, are all pretty wobbly. I guess my question is, how do you weight different stats that count? Do you bother, or is it the secret key?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Never roto punt.

Yeah, do you know why Steamer seems to give everyone a low games count? It snars up my chads.

12:42
Eno Sarris: It’s a thing that comes from using the depth charts — if you look at things that way, you want to list the third guy at a position, you have to give him PA, and most years he gets PA, but some years the top guy is healthy all year.

Everyone loves Marcus Stroman, and rightfully so, but what about another young *short* starter in the AL named Yordano Ventura. Do you think he can be one of those guys you get later in your draft that actually finishes among the top 25 starters in the league? I seem to be higher on him that most…

12:52
Eno Sarris: His secondary pitches didn’t perform as admirably as Stroman’s last year, but he has more velocity. He’s definitely a good/great pitcher on the cusp.

12:53
Comment From Marty
Why the love for Soler? Unproven at major leauge level, below league average walk rate.projected for more Hrs at the major league level (per steamer) than he hit in any one year in MiLB. ZiPS looks more reaosnable, at .250 with a dozen homers.

12:54
Eno Sarris: The adjustments he made in the minor leagues suggest better contact and more patience coming, the debut he had was outstanding for his age, his power is impressive and he doesn’t have the contact problems that most power hitters his age have around him.

12:54
Eno Sarris: In short, it’s a lot of the things I loved about Rizzo the last two years.

I thought I was on board with all of your advice, and then I read that Daniel Tiger is the worst show that your kid watches. Please expound on this.

1:03
Eno Sarris: So. Boring.

How much change do you imagine xScore will go through as you gain more information into newer beers?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Already planning part two, with ABV/Style ABV instead of straight ABV, and AVG BAR per Brewery instead of Brewery BAR.

1:04
Comment From JT
Eno, keep 2 of 3, $9 Cobb, $1 Stroeman, $5 Betts? Pitching will be thin in the auction. Thanks

1:05
Eno Sarris: Gotta be Stroman and Betts, even if we getting excited.

1:05
Comment From Bernie
Hello Eno, what’s your projections for Pompey? A good pick for keeper leagues?

1:05
Eno Sarris: Better in OBP and deeper leagues, may not have a great batting average or tons of power.

When is a jar not a jar?

1:05
Eno Sarris: When it’s ajar.

I had a dream I was enjoying a beer with Eno.. Only to look to my left and Eno was 15 years old..

1:06
Eno Sarris: I had a dream last night that Sullivan taught me a knuckle curve and Kiley caught it.

I’m in a K/9 (min 37 IP) league. Thinking I spend little on SP and go spend money on Chapman, Betances, Holland etc. High K/9 RP. I already have Hamels and Porcello as my SP with need for 3 more.

1:07
Eno Sarris: Yes.

Which third baseman would you rather have on your real MLB team: OBP/SLG of .300/.600 or OBP/SLG of .600/.300?

1:08
Eno Sarris: The power.

What’s your best guess at the probability that Harvey will be pitching the first 3 weeks of September?

1:10
Eno Sarris: 70%? They say 200 okay if they make playoffs. I think he’ll take a long break over All-Star break, maybe a 15-dayer at some point.

1:10
Comment From boysofsuma
Hi when I saw in last weeks chat the shins song you posted up it reminded me of work and the fact that such artist such as the shins along with arcade fire and band of horses to name a few have made their way into the musac system . My question (auction league 16 teams)is with starting pitching so deep would you forgo an ace and perhaps try for 2 second tier pitchers or some sort of combination of lesser pitchers, Thanks

1:11
Eno Sarris: I always do this! Yes do it!

1:12
Eno Sarris: There’s gold from ten to twenty on my rankings. http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… Get two of those guys.

Best guess in the 5th starter sweepstakes…Norris or Salazar?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Salazar. If Norris healthy, I like him too though.

1:13
Comment From Ryan
Also Soler put on 25lb over the offseason and everyone says he looks like a monster now.

Why can some guys get by on fastball/slider as a starter without platoon splits?

1:14
Eno Sarris: Velocity and command. The slider gets platoon splits because if it drifts over the plate, it drifts right into opposite-handed bat path. But if you can avoid drifting over the plate…

Comment From PhilliesFan…Womp..Womp
What do you think Brett Gardner does this year? Where would you put his value in a 12 team auction?

1:14
Eno Sarris: Same old. OF2/3. Solid.

Comment From bc1975
General strat. question. I was in a 12 tm mixed where 15 SP were taken in the first 43 picks. I didn’t have any so I panicked and reached for Lester, Cole and Iwakuma much earlier than normal. Mistake?

1:15
Eno Sarris: I would have quit after Cole and taken a break.

Why do people say that Sanchez would be a lights out closer and that he “misses bats”? His swinging strike rate last year was 6.2%, the lowest of any pitcher with at least one save. He gets a lot of ground balls, but he’s no Zach Britton (and Britton also has a much better swinging strike rate at 13.1%). Sanchez does have a nice fastball, but it feels like he’s getting a lot of hype off of last year’s small sample size.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Guess it’s from watching more than looking at results. I do think more whiffs would come… if he was in the pen.

1:17
Comment From Marty
Anyone wanna fess up to sniffing Eno’s hair this week?

1:17
Eno Sarris: Please let’s not.

you can roto punt— i rotopunt average, because its stupid.

1:17
Eno Sarris: I mean not to the point that you get zeroes or ones in it.

1:17
Comment From Franklin
You buying or selling Steven Souza? It’s tough to get a guage on him…

1:18
Eno Sarris: I might sell at the hype price, wait for possible struggles early in season due to K%, and try to buy at depressed price. I believe the ability is there, but not sure he’ll do it right away.

1:18
Comment From Josh
Why haven’t you done positional rankings yet?

1:19
Eno Sarris: We did. Follow the link to the top 300 / draft spreadsheet. I’ll ask the writers to break out their tiered rankings soon.

1:19

I’m thinking of a late round combo of Kang and Semien at SS. What say you, Eno?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Yes. decently low floor, but two shots at good ceiling.

1:20
Comment From Dave
Eno, picking .300/.600 is mathmatically wrong

1:20
Eno Sarris: Damn.

1:20
Comment From Randy Savage
Zips has Gattis for only 20 hr, which seems low. What are you expecting from him and is he worth drafting in like the mid 80s in a 12 team mixed?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Two catcher league? Yes. Even in a one-catcher league, I’d *jump* after 90/100.

1:20
Comment From Marty
I know youre from Negril, but have you spent any time in Port Antonio? My personal fav part of the island, Anthony Bourdain went there for one of his shows. Brought back fun memories.

1:21
Eno Sarris: Saw that show but have only been once. Did find that show fascinating. Did a good job talking about the issues.

1:21
Comment From Lenny
Do you have any advice on how I should start my own database? Should I learn SQL, Python, or R? How exactly should I start out? Any advice would be wonderful!

1:22
Eno Sarris: SQL super easy, and there’s good stuff out there from Colin Wyers about how to build your own baseball database using SQL, so I’d go that route. I did. I’m leaning R next.

1:22
Comment From Guest
It would be nice to import custom projections into the Auction Calculator.

1:22
Eno Sarris: Might have to wait for 2.0, but now Zips should be in there, and I think we’ll even get some QS and HLD info soon.

Have you heard The Shins before they were called The Shins? It was the same lineup, but they were known as Flake Music. It’s good stuff–kind of Built to Spill-ish.

1:23
Eno Sarris: No! But I did see the Shins with 400 other people in Paris and that was awesome.

Any recommendations for a sour beer that’s pretty widely available? I’m not in an area where we get much craft beer beyond the standards

1:24
Eno Sarris: The sour sisters from Goose Island (Halia, Gillian, Juliette) are really good, and available.

When I’m walking Eno, I like to strut my stuff. It’s possible that I’m strung out. I’m not high as a kite but I still may just stop to sniff your hair.

Any spring training stats you’re paying attention to?

1:25
Eno Sarris: K% stabilizes the quickest…

1:25
Comment From Maxamuz
So I don’t wan to spend more than $40 on Trout ($200 limit), I’m going to open the bid at $40 and let the price go up from there. Thats to high in my league, he’s valued around $32 with the $200 cap. I’ll find my stats elsewhere this year.

1:25
Eno Sarris: I’ve only bought Trout at market price in an auction year once, and it was a shallow league which I won by hitting all my cheaper sleepers.

What’s the absolute latest round you’ll draft your FIRST pitcher in? I’m thinking about waiting until the 5th round this year just cause

House or Salazar for the Cleveland 5th starter spot? Gavin Floyd seems to be stalling progress over there…
