Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: Eno, I was just visiting the west coast with the intention of a move soon; however, how do west coasters handle the 9am Fangraphs chats? These chats are a godsend midday here for those on the east coast.

Eno Sarris: Gotta show early, do some email responses that cc the whole office and let you know you’re there, close the door, and talk into the phone intermittently like you’re on a conference call. solved.

Rufus T. Firefly: With the change in use of mediocre starters (i.e. likely fewer innings and chances at wins and K’s) is it time to focus more on power long relievers for fantasy?

Eno Sarris: The deeper the league, the more this becomes viable. Thinking of having one or two in my deepest leagues. Free/cheap ratio help.

Goose: What do you expect from Puig $10 and Luis Castillo $7 next year?  Trying to choose between the two of them in a 10 Team NL keeper league.

Eno Sarris: Puig just about to turn 27, and had a low BABIP for no good reason. I could see much of the same with a steal or two fewer and a better BA. His xBA this year was … loading loading loading loading well never mind then jesus.

Eno Sarris: I’m doing this on my phone network because the internet is down at my house and I can’t eat food because I’m getting an endoscopy today and the cats and their stupid bells woke me up at 5:30 and then the three year old moaned for an hour so never frigging mind

Eno Sarris: Oh look.. his xBA was .268, way better than .263. great.

CamdenWarehouse: Do QOs to Davis and Holland make sense to you?  If i were them I would have a hard time not saying “oh you want to pay me more than Chapman for a year, where do I sign up?”  I guess they could also think that they’ll break down again next year and try to get a long term offer, but if they think they’ll stay healthy accepting seems like a no brainer.

Eno Sarris: I think life as a reliever is the eternal search for a three year contract.

Erik: In the MLB, players are team controlled for 6 or 7 years. In the NBA, players are team controlled for 8 years, but for those second 4 years, they are restricted free agents. Would MLB players give up an extra year or two of control in order to become restricted free agents for some of that time?

Eno Sarris: In the NBA, high picks get paid well, low picks too, arbitration sucks, but it’s hard to compare different leagues: twice as many players on the active roster, three times on the roster, period.

Dylan: If the Met’s really do have a $30m budget, how would you suggest they attack this offseason?

Eno Sarris: Get a dropper power bat at any position, play them at first if Wright is healthy or move Wright over, buy a 4/5 starter — there are plenty and you can wait for a bargain there too — and use rest on a middle reliever, Nicasio type unless he gets closer money. it’s not sexy but it’s not like $30m is a big budget.

RotoLando: What’s the last thing you got really hyped-up about, that turned out to be kind of a dud? Doesn’t have to be baseball-related.

Eno Sarris: Was kinda excited for my older son to see Lego Ninjago and that was super bad. He was hyped enough, but then he was tired that day and was a bit of a brat coming out of the movie.

Esteban: You like Jesse Winker next year? Is 25hrs .800 OPS too ambitious?

Eno Sarris: Ambitious on the power side IMO.

Ben: So Steamer is projecting more innings, but less WAR for Bumgarner than for Samardzija. I know myself and others probably overvalue Bumgarner and undervalue Samardzija, but still, that can’t be right, can it?

Eno Sarris: This is all about FIP and homer suppression, and yeah, I think Bum can suppress homers.

Gumby: What do you think of Jordan Montgomery?

Eno Sarris: Definitely at least a back end starter in most leagues and in the big leagues. Needs to improve command a bit to whittle away at homer rate and be more than he was in his debut.

Draft Fan: Would you do a Rusney Castillo for Matt Kemp trade?

Eno Sarris: Kemp is the worst defensive outfielder in the league, the Braves have two first basemen otherwise, and even though they may value D a little bit less than other teams and may trade Inciarte for offense or pitching and install Acuna in center, I think they are still in the position to try these sort of reclamation projects and could use a better defender at Kemp’s position.

Stan Kasten: What do you think about a Joc+Dodgers prospect (Diaz, or White) for Marcell Ozuna+Wei Yin Chen dead money trade?

Eno Sarris: I think the Dodgers are trying to cut payroll not add. They were near $250 mill, way out in front, and penalties getting worse for biggest spenders.

Pete: Supposedly, the Cardinals and Marlins are a good match for a Stanton trade. What do you see the deal looking like?

Eno Sarris: I did some math and I think it’s this. If you think Stanton is not a health risk and is a six win guy, you get $180 m surplus on that huge contract. If he’s just a five-win guy, more like $80m surplus. The first situation gets a top ten hitter and a top ten pitcher, but there are also opt-outs, so let’s say it’s more like the second situation. That’s a top-ten pitcher and a 50-75 hitter or so. By BA ranks, that’s something like Reyes and Carson Kelley?

Guru: Which free agent contract will become the largest albatross?

Eno Sarris: I love the guy, but Jay Bruce is a bit one-note, and that note is being hit by everyone in baseball right now. It may not be the largest, but it could really be an albatross.

Three Lindors Down: Gut feeling. Where is Darvish playing in 2018?

Eno Sarris: If the Dodgers are off the table, could really be Cubs. Yanks keep talking about getting under the cap.

Charlie: Chacin’s slider has been pretty good, but hasn’t put it together. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Problem is this: velo isn’t great, changeup isn’t great by movement or velo, and the two breaking balls are very similar in velo and movement. So he’s among a big swath of sinker/slider guys. If he’s cheap, I get him and I try to differentiate the breaking balls more and have him throw more curves.

C.E. Roy: Will Brad Hand be traded this offseason?

Eno Sarris: He should be, yes. I guess the Padres are asking for a lot.

Wes: Stanton is great and everybody but I don’t want him, and mainly that contract, on my team. Am I wrong to think this?

Eno Sarris: I just don’t think it’s that onerous by AAV any more. Someone is going to get $25m a year this year that will make you gag for a second.

Rockie Dangerfield: New rule proposal: right-handed hitters run the bases the other way (3B->2B->1B->H).  You keep the part where you can’t have two runners on the same bag, thus heightening the tactics of baserunning.  Runners moving in opposite directions must high-five as they pass each other.

Eno Sarris: could get on board. but then there would be even *more* shifts!

John: How much should we expect from Otani? How many innings? Is the difference between the juiced balls and Japanese balls great?

Eno Sarris: I wonder if, in some ways, the ball has become more like the Japanese one. Pitchers coming from that country have told me they found more movement on their splitters because the seams where higher here…. no pitch has lost more movement since 2014 than the splitter, and we’ve shown by drag and ball evidence that the seams are lower.

Dominic: What do you make of Amed Rosario having the 5th highest statcast sprint speed in the majors?  His .330 BABIP helped him achieve a 16.9% infield hit percentage.

Eno Sarris: Makes me think even more that we’ve got an early Elvis Andrus on our hands. People were mad about that, but Elvis is a good player.

Jay Bruised: Should I unload Lester with EE or Murph (could only keep 1) for a bigger pitching upgrade in a keeper league?

Eno Sarris: You should do it. Edwin like three years older and has a package that seems easier to find on the market if it’s not an OBP league.

BartMan: I’m doing my first dynasty, 12 tm H2H categories, what kind of core would you want to start your dynasty with? As in, hitter heavy? pitcher heavy? mix?

Eno Sarris: Hitter heavy. Pitching projections are worse year to year, pitchers get hurt more often, and stay hurt longer.

RunawaYEM: Are you a believer in Austin Riley and Alex Jackson?

Eno Sarris: 100% in on Austin Riley. Talked to him, liked the makeup, and the sound off the bat was awesome. Gap to gap ringing liners in both games I saw.

Clambake: Have we reached the bottom of the barrel for clever beer names?

Eno Sarris: If it means fewer stupid blonde joke blonde ales, I’m into it.

CamdenWarehouse: But is 3 years/$24m really better than 1 year/$17.5m plus the chance for another deal?

Eno Sarris: If you Wade Davis, you getting better than 3/24, and your agent is pumping you up right now.

Roadhog: Could the A’s swing a package for all three of Ozuna, Realmuto, and Barraclough? Which would be most likely?

Eno Sarris: I think the Marlins are mostly cutting costs for prospects, and I don’t think those second two are expensive. Maybe they get one outfielder.

Hooha: Did you ever get a chance to interview Halladay?

Eno Sarris: I didn’t, and that makes me sad.

Guest: How bad is it for the Braves to be heading in to winter meetings with no GM, and Hart’s future unclear?  I’m wondering if the FO is functional enough to do things like make major signings/trades

Eno Sarris: I think Hart and Schuerholz have always had say and will continue to do so after they hire a GM.

Guest: If you weren’t a baseball journalist, what field would you see yourself in?

Eno Sarris: I was in educational publishing, but there are some serious underlying problems in that one, particularly in textbooks. I could see myself in some sort of role where I connect between data teams and implementation teams here in Silicon Valley.

Zach: Is matt Moore good?

Eno Sarris: Unfortunately, no. Yes, in that he’s a major leaguer, but not an ace. I’m hoping he can recover some form and be a decent league average, slightly above guy.

Tommy Lasordid: If the Dodgers sign Addison Reed and Brandon Morrow, would that be plenty for a return trip to the post season? Do they need another starter or a LF bat?

Eno Sarris: I might want a number two to put next to Kershaw more than a bat. Toles, Adrian Gonzalez, Kiké, there are some options in LF/1B to move Bellinger around.

Tony: I seem to remember you not completely buying into Smoak… xStats says 268/354/543, 39 HR, Steamer has him at 247/335/474, 30 HR – split the difference?

Eno Sarris: I think I like Steamer. That’s still a big improvement, but it bakes in more discipline regression, which was the source of his breakout.

Jay: Keep seeing several writers/reporters reference that the Giants might move Belt and pick up some of his contract to move him. Why would they do that and what kind of return would they be looking for since they’re really not in a rebuilding mode it seems.

Eno Sarris: I do think that the Giants may surprise us with a move. I’ve been looking at the cap situation, and they can spend a little, but free agency will be tough for them. So if they want to trade, they’ll have to come up with an idea.

Dan: Should Sox fans really be afraid of Hosmer? He would’ve led the team in all three slash categories this season, and I don’t think anyone’s gonna give him more than 7 years. Zero injury history, too. Feel like they could use stability at first

Eno Sarris: He’s so BABIP-dependent because of his ground ball rate. And another $150m burnt on a guy that had serious question marks (Pablo, Hanley)… I’d be afeared.

Jayson Werth: Where am I playing on Opening Day?

Eno Sarris: Maybe nowhere. Or, like, DH for the A’s.

PD: Do the Lego movies need a reboot?

Eno Sarris: People think I’m crazy but I didn’t love the Batman one. It was so loaded with references and meta humor that I just got tired of it.

DTH: That rumored Heyward for Shark+Melancon bad contract swap never made real sense because of the multiple no-trade clauses, but if those weren’t involved, would you do that deal? my instinct is the Cubs would have to add a prospect or two to sweeten the deal

Eno Sarris: I know the Giants disavowed this, and maybe it’s not this deal, but this is exactly the kind of deal that we may see. Especially if it nets them some prospects, and gets them a major leaguer at a position of need like this.

Yanksfan : Guys over at RIver Avenue Blues suggest the yanks trade Clint Frazier, chance Adams, Solak and Domingo acevedo to marlins for yelich. What do you think of that trade?  I like Yelich and the trade seems like both sides gain similar value but do the Yanks really need to upgrade OF?  We have hicks and Gardner and Clint Frazier.  I would prefer a trade to upgrade areas of weakness (SP, 3b, 2b). Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Would a smaller deal for Dee make sense?

Dr. Funk: Which SP prospect should the Cards trade?   Weaver, Flaherty, Hicks, ALcantata, Hudson, Helsley, Fernandez?   Damn we have a lot of RHP depth….

Eno Sarris: I’d like to keep Reyes and Weaver myself.

LegallyEagle: JBJ for Grandal?

Eno Sarris: Taylor plays second? Not impossible. Dodgers played Barnes in the world series after all.

ATCQ: Dave Cameron is convinced LAD will trade Joc Pederson.  Do you agree, why or why not?

Eno Sarris: I’d like to buy low, personally, but when they started playing Taylor over Joc in center, that was a sign.

Tony: Rangers have an odd mix of old (Beltre/Choo/Hamels) and young (Gallo/Mazara/Odor), with Andrus and Martin Perez in the middle… I don’t see a quick path to catching Houston that doesn’t involve both Otani and Darvish. What do you see them doing?

Eno Sarris: Surprisingly high payroll and a lot of warts in the young players. I could see them retooling.

Erik: Can the Phillies make the jump that the Diamondback/Rockies/Brewers made this year? Is there anyone better positioned for that?

Eno Sarris: I like their core, and yes they close. Rays and Braves have a bunch of nice young players graduating to bigs in the next couple of years.

Marcus Banks: You into boxing at all? The top 2 heavyweights opened up negotiations today. Will be a killer fight if it happens.

Eno Sarris: I don’t *want* to be into boxing, but I am. I’ll probably see the fight if it happens, and furtively fire off some ill-thought-out tweets while I bob and weave in my living room.

Clambake: Don’t you love the keyboard GMs who suggest that Miami should trade Stanton for their teams #6-10 prospects?

Eno Sarris: There’s a lot of disagreement on what Stanton actually is, but I don’t think his injuries have all been the kind that make him injury prone, and I don’t think he’s actually that one-note.

BTinVT: Do you see teams moving outfielders around during game based upon arm stregnth/accruracy to cut down a runner in a crucial situation?

Eno Sarris: I wrote about that once when Sam Fuld brought it to my attention with regards to moving better defenders from left to right depending on handedness of the batter. We could see more of this.

Jesse: Do you think Gohara will be one of the more exciting young pitchers to watch in 2018? Seems like he has Ace potential, I can’t believe we landed him for Mallex Smith.

Eno Sarris: Any improvement in the changeup — a la Severino — and you could see a huge breakout there, yes.

Kevin: Does it make any sense for the Braves to invest in 3, possibly 4 year deals for relievers at this point? Beat writers seem dead set that they will mainly target improving the pen this offseason.

Eno Sarris: Everyone wants to improve the pen tho.

loldodgers: What is it about Chris Devenski’s changeup that makes it so effective? Is it just the way he holds it or a spin rate thing?

Eno Sarris: I think it’s the way he falls off the mound, creates a feeling he’s throwing inside to a lefty, and then the release also creates a ton of fade.

Bork: When you’ve got JD wanting $25m a year or more, Stanton’s contract is definitely fair

Eno Sarris: Right? Just a tad long.

OC: I’m perplexed by the Indians decision to move Francisco mejia to 3b. His bat loses a lot of value as a 3b, so why not try to trade him for a 3b (or any other position) of similarly valued prospect (about top 20)

Eno Sarris: I suppose they like his bat… if they can play Kipnis in the outfield, they can improve by having Mejia at third, and then they get all the years. Can Kipnis play in the outfield? CF? seems a stretch!

Tim: Are you on the “Maikel is toast” boat as well?

Eno Sarris: nope

Eno Sarris: The pitchers I guess. Labrum surgery sucks and Salazar is lost. Zimmer could steal 30.

Erik: According to Vegas, the top 5 Otani landing spots are the Mariners, Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, and Yankees. Does that look right to you?

Eno Sarris: Yes. Teams with either a winning legacy or a good Japanese contingent in the city or both.

Eno Sarris: I mean, money is mostly off the table, though a few cities can pay a bit more. So it’s about the city itself and their ability to win. I think maybe Dodgers actually. He was thinking about signing with them out of high school. But Yankees make sense too.

Erik: Which young Cub hitter gets traded for pitching this winter?

Eno Sarris: They really haven’t done that and may not do it, but the one that makes the most sense is Schwarber, because his outfield defense is not good.

harmony: Could Miami reduce payroll if the Marlins package lefthander Wei-Yin Chen (who is owed $65 million over three years) with the surplus value of players such as Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and/or J.T. Realmuto?

Eno Sarris: That’ll certainly be the non-Stanton deal they try to make. Which is why the Athletics would be a strange fit, unless Miami pays down the chen contract a bit.

Eno Sarris: Holy crap. The A’s have $30m to spend. Maybe they will get Chen and an OF.

Eno Sarris: Hilarious. they have three veterans being paid $6m each and everyone else is Arb1 or Arb2.

Eno Sarris: or minimum.

Mahatma Gagne: Eno, Rich Hill is the #2 next to Kershaw. He good.

Eno Sarris: I like him! But if you’re taking your number two out in the fourth inning the playoffs, I’m not sure he’s your number two.

Marty: Eno, I passed you in the Scottsdale Stadium parking garage the other day and hollered, “Enoooooo!”. What are your thoughts on Glasnow going forward?

Eno Sarris: I thought I heard someone! Glasnow stereotypical high ceiling low floor guy. If he can do something like Carrasco did, and just throw hard in the zone with great stuff… I don’t typically think that players add a ton off command. Maybe a little around the edges, by sequencing better.

Eno Sarris: man I’m hungry and I have four more hours to go before my procedure and have to stop drinking water now

Lee: Yes but JD doesn’t have a prospect cost involved in signing him.  Stanton will cost talent, JD just money.

Eno Sarris: Sure, but we were talking about payroll and surplus value. A six win guy is worth around $60m, there’s surplus there, and actual contracts are rising to meet Stanton’s.

KJ: Am I totally crazy for thinking the Reds could return to relevance in the next 2 years?

Eno Sarris: They have one starter and one reliever and an okay lineup. I want to see another pitcher work out.

KJ: Also, Joey Votto. No question – just want to say his name. So say we all.

Rockie Dangerfield: How annoyed should I be when Chatwood goes to Miami or Pittsburgh or somewhere and winds up getting CY votes next year?

Eno Sarris: Oh god Pittsburgh 100%

The Ghost of Wade Boggs: Generally speaking, what would an Ian Kinsler trade look like?

Eno Sarris: I hate to follow a playbook because we don’t know who actually needs him and what they have available, but we’re talking about a 35 year old signed to a one year deal at $10m and projected to be a 2.5 win player. So he should return a pitcher in the back end of the top 100. May get more at deadline because teams will know they need him.

…: There aren’t good pitching options on the trade market and the Cubs don’t really need an ace, just depth. So why is everyone saying this is the year they trade a hitter?

Eno Sarris: Agree. I guess it’s because people don’t love Q like we do, and are missing that they look for pitching like this every year recently.

Nathan: i don’t get the Pederson trade thing. Joc had a bad season but he had a 129 wRC+ in 2017. Why trust Verdugo who’s played all of 10 or 15 games out there rather than a guy who you know can be a very good hitter?

Eno Sarris: Well I did say I’d buy, but it’s not just Verdugo, it’s Toles, and if there’s anything left with Adrian Gonzalez, if he can fix the back for one last year… there are options.

Pudge Poison: What do you think of Baez?  Do people still overrate him because his skills are flashy, or underrate him because many of the best things he does don’t show up in the box?

Eno Sarris: I’ve seen people say he could be the best player in baseball, and I can see that from a tools perspective, he does everything really well. I don’t see him getting more patient or reaching less, so I think this is who he is.

Wes: Can I recommend scheduling endoscopy and such procedures early in the morning in the future? Cuts back on the pre-op pain.

Eno Sarris: My first such. Novice move. Also: not a ton of options. I’ve wanted to do this for years but needed a big event to happen so I could get a referral and a spot on the schedule, which further points to how bad we are at preventative med.

Guest: A Wood is very good

Eno Sarris: A bit fragile, really fell off in second half. I see it now as Kershaw and a very good bunch of guys. I wonder if they want Kershaw, fill in the blank, and a very good bunch of guys.

Pudge Poison: In the next three years, who provides more value: Zack Cozart or Dee Gordon?

Eno Sarris: “probably” Cozart, but Dee has actually been more consistent despite his terrible projections.

Eno Sarris: Nelson Cruz plus Billy Hamilton. BLT plus breakfast sandwich.

Eno Sarris: And imagine his years with this ball. Imagine.

The Ghost of Wade Boggs: Settle a bet for me: How often do people ask you to settle a bet for them, but no bet was actually on the line for it to be settled?

Sonny: Why is the new Marlins regime setting up a fire sale? Follow up, if they do sell off Stanton, one of the other OFs and Dee Gordon why is anyone still a Marlins fan?

Eno Sarris: I don’t actually get it myself. You’d think a new group would want to win. Do they want to win with their own players? At $115m, they weren’t spending a ton. But if you look back, I guess, they were usually below that number.

Hannah Hochevar: Liked your piece on post-season relief appearances. Should we be alarmed that the 2 poster fellas from 2016, Miller and Chapman, both faced injury in 2017?

Eno Sarris: I would be, when it comes to Morrow, Jansen, and Davis, myself.

Pudge Poison: Are ball makers aware of the difference in bounciness of their balls, and if so, is it intentional? Can it be dampened?  Should it be?

Eno Sarris: The company line is that the ball is ‘still within normal specifications’ so yes, they can tell it’s different, but it’s in the normal range, so they shrug. I could se this being part of an effort for efficiency: new methods mean the range of bounciness has been narrowed, it just happens to be at the harder end of the allowable spectrum. In which case, both manufacturer and MLB both shrug again.

The ghost of Gil Meche: What does Arizona look to do if they miss out on resigning JD?  Wouild a guy like Bruce fulfill the lineup or will they look to make a move for an Ozuna. (Barring they have the org depth to pull it off)

Eno Sarris: Move Tomas back out there and just look to improve on either side of the ball? Maybe pen?

Jack: The other day my dad was driving I was in the front seat he sees something on the side of the road. He screams turns around  and we pick a noid out of the trash and bring it to our house.

Eno Sarris: You? You almost wreck the car, and look at your dad like he’s nuts.

Pudge Poison: Lynn has a lousy xFIP-. Is this because he gave up too many home runs last year?

Eno Sarris: That should be normalized. I think it’s because he gave up too many fly balls and pitched in a park that normally suppresses ground balls.
