Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/15/16

1:29
Eno Sarris: I can’t do this to you. I’ll keep chatting. It’s too much fun.

12:01
Kyle: Eric Hosmer or Greg Bird for strictly an offensive standpoint for the next few years?

12:01
Eno Sarris: Bird. Hosmer too married to his BABIP.

12:02
Kyle: Austin Hedges or Blake Swihart from a pure offensive standpoint for the next few years?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Swihart.

12:02
bob: the mets should add who this offseason?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Probably coming in a trade. If they sign someone, should be a reliever like Ziegler, Hudson, maybe a lefty like Logan or Wood. There are a few relievers out there still.

12:04
Eno Sarris: There just isn’t a great fit in center. They need defense, and nobody other then maybe Austin Jackson fits that mold in center.

12:04
Roadhog: predict a Kendall Graveman trade for a CF

12:05
Eno Sarris: Not sure he’s enough to get a center fielder. The Rockies are asking for an Eaton trade, and Graveman is not the foundation for that.

12:05
E4: Hi Eno. First and foremost, congrats on the new gig. Even though us baseball fans get less Eno,we’re all super happy for you. Here’s my question: Jose Altive has been the cornerstone of my team for the past three years, two of which led to a championship. Going into 2017, I wonder if it’s finally time to jump ship. He’s going to be the most expensive player to go at my auction, his 7 SB in the second half scare me, and I much preferred him as a lead off hitter than potential #3 in the order. Am I overreacting here or is there good reason to be concerned? Thanks!

12:05
Eno Sarris: Still only 26. It’s better be to a year early than a year late, but even a 20/25 Altuve is going to have a ton of value.

12:06
Jojo: You mentioned on a sleeper pod awhile back that you’d sell carrasco in dynasty…how aggressively? He’s my sp3 in 16 team h2h. Hope you will still rank sp on The Change!

12:08
Eno Sarris: If you’re selling like an SP1, this is the time. His velo is down again, strikeouts, too, and it’s not great command, so he may not age that well. Add in one TJ surgery already and the fact that he’s only thrown 180 once in his career…

12:08
Rb: Quintana for bellinger verdugo and de Leon. Who says no?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Dodgers. Not sure if they should, but that’s what I think they’d do.

12:09
john: How do the Padres turn the trade pieces they have into an interesting SS?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Wait for rankings list to love their prospects.

12:09
Rb: Quintana for martes tucker and fisher? Who says no?

12:09
Eno Sarris: I think that’s a reasonable deal.

12:09
Brad: Oh Eno, we miss you at RG. Can we still ask fantasy baseball questions on your chat?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Of course.

12:10
Merv Throneberry: Both Eaton and Kipnis are priced similarly low, who should be kept?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Similar offensive players, so I’ll take the second baseman.

12:10
Fat Kenny G: How come no one is talking about Ryan Howard? Let the O’s sign him, he’ll hit 49 bombs, and he’s the 2017 AL MVP. What’s so hard about this?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Dunno, he’s 37 and there are a plethora of younger cheapish power sources still on the market, like Brandon Moss, Adam Lind, Pedro Alvarez, Mike Napoli, Michael Saunders, and Nick Buss.

12:12
YouthBerry: How highly should the Jays value Marcus Stroman? Seem like the guy the media puts in every potential trade involving the Jays.

12:12
Eno Sarris: I don’t see them trading Stroman.

12:12
JP: Can you tell us more about your expanded beer gig?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Still working out a lot of details, but soft launch Monday!

12:14
Curious George: Care to share a few American League sleepers as of December 15, 2016?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I’m interested in Adalberto Mejia for his high spin fastball, plus slider, and better feel for his change and opportunity in Minny rotation. Chad Green has good spin and if he trusted that splitter… he’s better than the last Green. David Paulino… Andrew Triggs probably has a job in Oakland right now and is not a typical sidearmer in every regard. I love love Ryon Healy. Joey Wendle actually was a league leader type in hitting in line drive angles. Alex Bregman is going to break out big time. High Barrel guys that I believe in that should be cheap: Byung Ho Park, Kennys Vargas (there can be only one), Jorge Soler is going to be okay, Tyler Austin may surprise, here comes Miguel Sano.

12:17
Miketron: Thanks for continuing to chat. Don’t want to have to go back to Cosby for my ludes…

12:17
Eno Sarris: HEYO

12:18
Beergraphs vs. Westworld Hosts: I’ve got a keeper conundrum: 5×5 16 teams and can only keep 3 of: Hill, Duffy, Porcello, Hamels, Melancon, Oh. I am going for a third straight title so long term value is less critical to me than 2017 glory.

12:18
Eno Sarris: Hamels, Duffy… Hill? Last one is tough. Might be okay to take the closer if your league keeps closers.

12:18
Ethan: Are prospect rankings reflective more of potential ceilings or bases?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Most are ceilings.

12:18
Drew: Autonomous vehicles: you in? The people need to know.

12:19
Eno Sarris: Like: the idea I could do work while in my car.
Don’t like: the idea that I will be expected to work while in my car.
Like: Efficiency of vehicles on the road, this may actually help with traffic created by stupid things like rubbernecking.
Don’t like: more vehicles on the road.

12:20
Sam: How do you see Odor 2017 looking? He is still so young but he isn’t walking, had a high HR/FB% and is a 50% SB. Does he improve from here?

12:20
Eno Sarris: He’s good, but he’s more Jonathan Schoop than people want to admit.

12:21
Miketron: Do you see Duda as the Mets full time 1B this year? Will his back allow him to?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Can’t answer the second, but the first, yes I think so, since there’s no great righty (Flores?) that could step in there.

12:21
Alex: Talk to me about Taillon’s 2017. He should finally spend a majority of his innings in the majors and may be passed the innings limit at this point? 2016 #s looked great…whats next for him?

12:22
Eno Sarris: The changeup is… bad. I want to see a cutter/slider or else he’s more of a midrotation guy.

12:22
Danny B: David Robertson is a pretty good, but not great, reliever being paid like a pretty good, but not great, reliever. White Sox mostly get salary relief and not much else for dealing him and maybe a lottery ticket or two. Am I right?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Or they keep him for a better haul at the deadline. Would be in demand then when teams know they’re headed for the postseason.

12:23
Buff: Read your piece last year on finding next year’s closers by looking for right-handlers with high velo and high k/9. Went for Jumbo Diaz and Caminero. We know how that worked out, but still have some confidence in the method. Who are you touting this year (NL only)?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Yow. Yeah. I had those guys on a few teams. Carter Capps? Hector Neris for sure. So sure about Neris. Juan Nicasio? BLAKE. TREINEN.

12:25
Nelson: Dont ever leave us Eno!!

12:25
Eno Sarris: HOLD ME.

12:25
Willl: Jon Gray or Alex Reyes and why?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Reyes better home park and third pitch is better.

12:26
Bruce: How could you not know that a civet is a mammal not a rodent? And you went to Stanford? Harvard of the west coast my ass!

12:26
Carl C: My Eickhoff or your Jerckhoff, Who hangs up?

12:27
Jordan: i miss august, both the person and the month

12:27
Eno Sarris: Guys, this is not our best interlude game.

12:27
Lucy: what do you think about Mike Dunn’s deal with the Rockies?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Going price for decent lefties with a track record. They like his velocity. We don’t like his command.

12:28
J.G.: It seems counterintuitive for the Padres to target any quality SPs at this point. Less they try = greater chance for #1 pick. I would assume the same for SS upgrade. Thoughts?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Eh, you can also sign/trade for some buy low guys that get you something interesting back in trade if they do bounce back. Someone asking about Clay Buchholz, that’s a good name. Ty Ross could still end up there.

12:29
Bork: Any good last minute gift ideas for the significant other? Asking for a friend.

12:29
Eno Sarris: Tell me if you think of one.

12:29
Willl: Are you a Buxton believer?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Not really. I get a Cameron Maybin vibe. The injuries, the promise, the fits and starts… Buxton has more power but also more strikeouts.

12:30
Tim: Does Xander Bogaerts have 30 home run power? When do we see it?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Plus exit velo and he’s tinkering with the launch angle. If he’s one to one GB to FB this year, then yes, he’ll hit 30 someday.

12:31
Carl C: Whats worse, pumpkin beers or Christmassy-clove-nutmeg-cant-finish-a-half-a-bottle beers?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Both.

12:32
Alex: Travis Wood or Madison Bumgarner from a pure offensive standpoint for the next few years?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Bum going to get a bunch more PA.

12:32
Zach: How much does GIancarlo Stanton’s injury history worry you?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Fair amount. It’s not just hit by pitches any more.

12:33
The Cincinnati Kid: Gallo in Rd 25, Lamb in 10, or Healy in 10? 10 team, 10 player keeper OBP league

12:33
Eno Sarris: I love Healy but Lamb.

12:33
Hannah Hochevar: What say you to Sullivan’s assertion that the O’s are better off with Joseph than Tha Beef? Also: congrats on the beer transition!

12:33
Eno Sarris: I think the pairing is interesting and will give the manager good options. Maybe you put the good framer with the bad command guy, and the better offense with the guys that are better at hitting spots? Maybe you do it by velocity of the starting pitcher?

12:34
Adam: Can you see Severino developing into a top tier starter? Always felt his lack of 3rd pitch and speed variation make him more suited for the pen.

12:34
Eno Sarris: Both of his secondaries are problems right now. He kinda needs to find both.

12:34
Dan: Is OF the most shallow of the positions?

12:34
Eno Sarris: LF.

12:36
Anthony: After 4 years I still can’t tell: is Trevor Bauer good? Could he center a trade for an outfielder?

12:37
Eno Sarris: He made a big change to his delivery and has been finding his ability to repeat the new one.. has good stuff, but might have worked really really hard to become a major league average pitcher.

12:37
Miketron: Ketel Marte and Mallex Smith. Starters or speedy bench players?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Both enough defense to be glove-first second-division starters.

12:37
Guest: has a young player ever been signed to an extension before they reach the big leagues?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Can’t remember the deal for Jon Singleton but maybe him.

12:38
Nick: Can you explain your new gig to us? Or is it under-the-veil like August?

12:38
Eno Sarris:

12:39
Eno Sarris: It’s Beer Culture. It’s BeerGraphs with funding and some lighter fair, some travel stuff. Events! Watch for events near you. I’ll be in NYC in late January for a launch at a great craft brewery… it’ll be fun.

12:40
Noel : Is the Giants window maybe 1 year two tops to when another world series ?aren’t they getting close to being in a postion the blue jays are now or even worse the shape the Tigers currently are bloated payroll and need everything to go perfectly to have a shot ?

12:41
Eno Sarris: I said they were a year closer to disaster than people thought and got a lot of blowback. And maybe I shouldn’t have used that term, but everyone is post-peak and locked into long-term contracts, which is a tough spot. Look at what they’re saying now — they’re in the lux tax and can’t afford to add salary, but they already have a hole in the outfield. And nobody is taking any of their bad money back, so they’re stuck. Already stuck. And no hot young prospects to provide upside beyond last year.

12:42
Eno Sarris: A team with that park and that ownership and front office should be fine in bad years, so disaster is wrong word. But mediocrity could be closer than it seems.

12:42
Erik: Why have I not seen the Dodgers-looking-for-a-second-baseman rumors and the Phillies-shopping-Cesar-Hernandez rumors link up? Seems as though Dozier is the only one linked to the Dodgers so far. Could you see a fit between the Dodgers and Phillies there?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Hernandez is evaluated very differently across the game, depending on how much you’re worried about his baseball IQ and his batting average on balls in play. I think he’s probably a league average guy, so they should be linked, but it always depends on what the Phils want.

12:43
Hank: Josh Hader for real?

12:43
Eno Sarris: I’m a big fan.

12:43
ACJ: What do you think of the plan to have Jason Heyward spend the Winter in AZ with Barry Bonds ?

12:44
Eno Sarris: He’s got power in there. Someone can unlock it. Where Eaton is steady Eddie, Heyward has his defensive skillset and Huge Variance on the offensive end.

12:44
Bork: I got scared when you had that announcement, that August recruited you for his mystery MLB team. Phew.

12:44
Eno Sarris: Having seen some details on some opportunties, I don’t think working in the game is for me.

12:45
MS: Justin Turner and Jason Castro: $88.5m for 18.32 projected WAR.
Ian Desmond and Mike Dunn: $89m for 3.21 projected WAR.

12:45
LudeBurger: Don’t you dare leave me!

12:45
tommy lasagna, sr.: scraping the lude barrel, came up with this: i weigh the same but look fatter. is this middle age?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Better? dunno.

12:45
Brad: any young players in fantasy you have a crush on like you did with soler few years back?

12:45
Eno Sarris: In that same, I’m not sure but there’s a lot I like there and he’s cheap way: Domingo Santana.

12:46
Myster E. Mann : Jose abreu for Lucas duda, Dominic Smith and Justin Dunn?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Mets jump all over that. Not sure it’s enough.

12:46
AJ: There’s been a lot out there about the White Sox not needing to flip Quintana now. Aside from the obvious reason of capitalizing on the dearth of pitching options in FA this offseason, it seems the time to deal Q is now given that extra year of value on his deal. In other words, Q does nothing for Hahn by pitching this year for them except diminish his value. Do you agree?

12:47
Eno Sarris: You have to balance against the idea that many of the guys you brought back are going to be in the big leagues next year, Q has more years than Sale did on the contract, and that deadline trades generally get you more back.. wouldn’t be surprised if they keep him.

12:47
5 Run Homer: Who tf is Nick Buss

12:48
Eno Sarris: HAHAHA threw him in to see if anyone was paying attention. I don’t know. Well, sorta, but not really.

12:48
The Cincinnati Kid: Who would you comp David Dahl to in a couple years?

12:48
Eno Sarris: I get a bit of a Carlos Gonzalez vibe from him.

12:49
Scott of Linconshire: I like beer

12:49
The Cincinnati Kid: Say what you want about America right now, but 13 bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice

12:49
tommy lasagna, sr.: i do most of the cooking, but my wife complains about the mess i make. should i have dated around more?

12:49
Eno Sarris: Okay guys, we’re getting there.

12:50
Dominik: Is not wanting to give up Musgrove the sticking point for a quintana deal? Or are they really viewing tucker and martes as untouchables? In the past astros were aggressive parting with prospects but then again phillips, appell, Velasquez (good but health) all had serious flaws and might have been losing value anyway.

12:50
Eno Sarris: I bet Tucker is the sticking point.

12:50
Sandy Kazmir: Assuming you can have each of them for one year, would you rather have: Trumbo for $12M, Bautista for $15M, or Encarnacion for $20M?

12:50
Eno Sarris: Bautista I think.

12:50
Fat Kenny G: Since you’re going into the beer market, I was wondering do you think we’re in Peak Craft Beer or is there still room for growth? I’ve been in the craft beer game for about ten years now and I’m starting to have palate fatigue.

12:52
Eno Sarris: There are so many styles I think you might find yourself getting into something new, Pilsners or a new take on the IPA, or hoppy sours, or something like that. That’s what has happened to me every time I’ve had that personally. And about growth: yes, we’re at Peak Store Craft Beer. But! We’re not at Peak Local Craft Beer. More local brewpubs, fewer SKUs at the store.

12:52
Erik: In what situations should we assume that a high strikeout rate won’t ruin a prospect’s ceiling? Tools like KATOH hate high strikeout rates, but Kris Bryant seems to have turned out okay. In a similar vein, strikeout rate is Yoan Moncada’s primary concern, but should we view it as something which could potentially ruin him, or nothing more than a minor nuisance?

12:53
Eno Sarris: It’s my Achilles Heal of analysis. In fairness, statistically walk rates are less meaningful in the minors and high strikeout rates are indeed a red flag. I think that there are a few things about contact that are innate. But! You can learn to anticipate better, as Clint Frazier told me, I know what they’re trying to do to me better. Still. HIgh K rates leave me cold.

12:54
Al: In a world where Otani came ove and was allowed to pitch and DH full time, how would you like to see fantasy baseball (weekly leagues) handle that. 1) you can acquire both OFF and DEF stats for him 2) you have to choose to employ him as a pitcher OR a hitter on a weekly basis 3) you can separately draft Otani the pitcher and Otani the hitter 4) some other thing I cant think of

12:55
Eno Sarris: I think it would be more interesting to have to try to value him as one acquisition that gives you both stats. It’d probably mean that Yahoo would have to award you two separate players, though, just for lineup use, and so that means that every league can decide how to deal with those two separate players.

12:55
EbenezerBatflip: Is Sale better or worse in 2017 than he was in 2016?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Better. Framing.

12:56
johnforthegiants: Are Lindor & Betts already top 10 players in real life baseball?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Yes.

12:56
Desperate A’s Fan: If Graveman isn’t enough to bring a CF to Oakland, what would it take to get Dalton Pompey into the Green & Gold?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Has Pompey fallen a-la Jorge Soler, to the point where Doolittle for Pompey works for both sides?

12:57
A HUMAN: WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DO NOT LIKE PARTS OF AN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE? THERE IS NOTHING TO NOT LIKE, FELLOW HUMAN. IT IS PERFECT AND NOTHING COULD GO WRONG. LET US GO AND TAKE OUR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE TO A RECREATIONAL AREA AND BASE SOME BALL AROUND.

12:57
Eno Sarris: Oh right, there’s also the idea that a computer-driven car may make some inhuman decisions at the wrong times.

12:57
Tom: Doesn’t all the giolito hate seem a bit trendy and overblown after 6 MLB appearances. He still had a 2.97 and pretty good ratios across 3 levels in the minors. If his stuff was down due to preseason mechanical adjustments, isn’t the logical counterpart that he can make adjustments to get back to 2015 form while not being rushed with the pressure of contending gone?

12:58
Eno Sarris: That’s the hopeful side. I think spin is innate and he’s got low spin on the fastball, so short of going to a sinker, his fastball is going to be flat.

12:58
tommy lasagna, sr.: people don’t _____ enough.

12:58
Eno Sarris: obvious answer is laugh but I thought fart first and then laughed, so it’s fart.

12:58
Thankfully Canadian: “Shohei Otani agrees to sign with mlb only if he can hit as well as pitch.” Does he still get signed?

12:59
Eno Sarris: Yes. Everyone I’ve talked to in the game about him says “he’s legit, from both sides.”

12:59
Ethan: Is Willie Calhoun destined to be traded an AL team given his likely lack of a defensive position?

12:59
Eno Sarris: He’ll fake a position for a few years.

12:59
The Cincinnati Kid: How can I help with the beer venture? I’ve got 1200+ uniques on Untappd. I own my own business right now and I’m in my offseason

12:59
Eno Sarris: Pitch me at my name at gmail

1:00
Biggy: Think Montgomery will be the 5th Cub starter? Andy how will he do?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Yes and I like him.

1:00
Matt: You’re high on Jharrel Cotton. Are you putting him as a #5 fantasy starter, or a guy to get for the bench and hope he develops into a 4/5?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Oh I must be high on him because I like him better than 4/5. I mean, yes, draft him as a five.

1:01
Johnny5Alive: what time are you going to see rogue one?

1:01
Eno Sarris: In the theater is tough for me with the two rug rats but the four year old might be able to handle it and loves Star Wars, at least in theory. He’ll be a little scared but I think we might try it.

1:02
Dominik: Has power without anything else lost any value in the of corners? I know overall value counts but 30+ hrs and close to 100 RBI like jay bruce or Matt Kemp in 2016 used to have some intrinsic value even without great obp or defense. Of course they are also older but I would not expect them to basically have zero value. Also that Chris carter got non tendered after a 41 hr season seems crazy (I know he still isn’t a great hitter). Is that the new analytics?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Yeah I wrote about the changing shape of the outfielder — they’re literally smaller and lighter than they were before, compared to the league’s other positions — and this is part of it. It’s no accident that the easiest thing to find on the market right now is power without much else.

1:02
Zippy: Will the hard caps on international spending chase young top international prospects to Asia, assuming they can sign them for more money in their first contract?

1:03
Eno Sarris: yes.

1:03
Eno Sarris: Gotta love unintended consequences.

1:04
Trainman: The Mets should sign Chris Carter to platoon with Duda. Who’s with me!?!!

1:04
Eno Sarris: Uh, me.

1:04
Ben: Aren’t rodents mammals?

1:04
Eno Sarris: I’m no expert in these matters, but yes it seems so. I bet one is a different sort of classification than the other.

1:04
Jerry: Why isnt Puig plus a couple low level prospects for Dozier happening?

1:05
Eno Sarris: I bet that’s what the Dodgers are trying to push.

1:05
Doug: Do you drink beer during these chats?

1:05
Eno Sarris: It’s ten am on the West Coast.

1:05
Jon: I can’t be the only one who pronounces arquimedes caminero as “canyonero” in my head

1:05
Eno Sarris: There are at least two of us.

1:05
Johnny5Alive: all rodents are mammals, not all mammals are rodents

1:05
Eno Sarris: There you go, that seems trustable.

1:05
M: Rank Pomeranz, wright, Buch, erod

1:06
Eno Sarris: Drew, Ed, Steve.

1:06
Art Vandelay: These weekend holidays are going to ruin me. It’s more like I don’t get a weekend at all.

1:06
Eno Sarris: People with toddlers are v familiar with this sentiment.

1:06
5 Run Homer: So I checked out the K/BB leaderboards. Thoughts on Braves’ Ryan Weber and Astros’ Chris Devenski?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Devenski is very interesting. I actually think he made progress on his third pitch (slider) but he’s either the SP6 or 7 right now… needs injury to be a starter.

1:07
zwibi: Would love to get a brief breakdown on Carlos Rodon. Do we think he keeps his gains against walks and does he continue to get better? Whats a good price for him in ottoneu? is $11 too much?

1:08
Eno Sarris: $11 is fine. He has a great movement change he can’t command, but he started throwing it more anyway later in the season and that was a big deal. He’ll always walk too many, but strike out enough that in his best years, he’s really good.

1:08
Miketron: I really think you need to share your physics of hitting info with Hosmer/Moustakas. Seems right in their wheelhouse…

1:08
Eno Sarris: I bet we’d have a really great high-level convo yeah.

1:08
CamdenWarehouse: How much regression is Daniel Murphy due for?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Just age. That power level is due to mechanical and approach changes that should stick.

1:08
Joe: Eno! What did you think of the various STL beers you got in trade? Also, I’m starting to see some Libertine beers at my local store. Everything I’ve had so far is fantastic. Any favorites from them?

1:10
Eno Sarris: SLO Wild was a five-star beer for me from Libertine. 4Hands is amazing across styles. Abraxas kills it. Side Project sours and saisons are really awesome. And I can’t remember… something Chestnut? make great German beers.

1:10
anonymous: Baseball Stars and Celebrities: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things?? Let’s Find Out!

1:10
Bork: Someone bought me a vanilla Christmas beer (????). Someone isn’t getting a Christmas gift back this year.

1:10
Curtis: Last minute gift advice – make her a special treat (Gingerbread Cookies – decorated?) …from scratch…(follow a recipe!)… box it wrap it and deliver in person to her work (or surprise in front of holiday gathering) . GUARANTEED. Effort is valuable….

1:10
Eno Sarris: Informative, funny, and angry: this is an interlude.

1:10
anonymous: What would be the best solution (for the fans) to the impending Otani debacle?

1:11
Eno Sarris: Roll back the stupid 25 year old rule which was stupid.

1:11
Sadwick: Non-specific ideas for last minute gifts: think about what the person enjoys the most and think about what they spend the most time on. Buy something useful to one of those two areas. Example: I have a friend that loves to write, I bought her a leather bound diary.

1:11
Johnny5Alive: We did a greedy santa/beer tasting hybrid where everyone brought a 6 pack, one person poured out blind tasters that recieved a number, everyone ranked the beers, and then you got to choose the numbers or steal someone else’s when it was your turn. Everyone should do this. It was very fun times

1:11
Eno Sarris: Useful.

1:11
Jack: Best guess: Who is Oakland’s opening day center fielder?

1:11
Eno Sarris: EibSmo.

1:12
Love me some Twinkies: If Kepler is able to be a full time outfielder this year what kind of numbers do you expect. Minor league numbers certainly show a nice mix of speed and power but that major league average was kind of ugly last year.

1:12
Eno Sarris: One thing that worried me was some soft contact. I did like the plate discipline, but worried a bit about the power.

1:13
Eno Sarris:

1:14
anonymous: The Reds threw the highest amount of average four-seam spin-rate fastballs in 2016. The Reds pitching staff was historically bad in 2016. Are these things related?

1:15
Eno Sarris: Could be. Spin’s the thing! One thing: Desclafani has a low-spin fastball and a low-spin curve and that might actually work together.

1:15
Doolittle Doolate: Wait are you leaving Fangraphs?!

1:15
Eno Sarris: Nope. Writing daily, chatting, podcasting once a week. No more RotoGraphs editing or writing.

1:15
Bloody red sox: Now that the Bosox have added Sale do you think it’ll affect E-Rod’s numbers. I’m thinking he should be able to settle in to a stressfree #5 spot in the rotation and should get some favorable matchups throughout the year. Can he finally bust through this year?

1:16
Eno Sarris: maybe the rest keeps his knee healthy? I like him enough.

1:16
tommy lasagna, sr.: could i develop a knuckleball and have a shot at the bigs? i’m 35 and a lefty. also i fart alot. ALOT.

1:16
Eno Sarris: Still have to be able to throw the knuckler 80+.

1:16
Bork: So what you’re saying is I should watch for an event near me in Eastern Ontario, Canada? Got it. Thanks Eno!

1:16
Eno Sarris: Um yeah totally lemme check the calendar …

1:16
Art Vandelay: Hernandez is easily the most frustrating baserunner in baseball. Seems like he got picked off or thrown out probably a third of the time he was on base.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Yeah speaks to that IQ thing.

1:17
Dave Kingman: Better keeper value for next season – Trumbo for $11 or Cory Seager for $22.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Seager.

1:17
bossman: Why would they serve beer cheese at an “authentic” German restaurant when it’s origins are Northern American (supposably)?

1:17
Eno Sarris: Because beer.

1:17
Willie Calhoun: Am I going to rake in the big leagues?

1:17
Eno Sarris: Yeah but might lose a lot of the value to defense.

1:17
Matt: I’m disappointed in your lack of rhyming Heywards name in same post when you said Eaton was “steady Eddie”. Don’t ya think Heyward is Variance Clarence?

1:18
Calbear949: Enos: Any thoughts about exit velocity and weak contact as for pitchers? Giants signed Melancon in part because of his “weak contact” numbers…are those numbers reliable?

1:18
Eno Sarris: People say that the cutter begets weak contact but I haven’t been able to prove it. I have seen something about pitching inside and then pitching on the outside afterwards, and he does do thtat.

1:19
Minty: Do you think that Bellinger stays at 1B and develops in the minors, or do you think that he switches to OF and comes up mid season?

1:19
Eno Sarris: OF for early career to get his bat up.

1:20
Scraunch the Haunch: With the signings of Beltran and Reddick, does that mean Springer is going to be in CF?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Yup.

1:20
Matt: Sometimes when I’m watching Nat Geo and see animals eating other animals whole, I envy them. Think how much better life would be if we just just eat the *whole* chicken wing instead of having to eat around the bone.

1:20
Drew: My wife keeps throwing up and waking me up in the middle of the night. Is this what having a baby is like? If so, I’m not ready.

1:21
Michael: I know who Nick Buss is. He’s Gus’s son and was born on the Gus Bus.

1:21
Eno Sarris: Okay we’re doing better people.

1:21
Sandy A: Doesn’t Bauer already work harder than most other pitchers, or is it that he works hard on nonproductive things or is it just a myth?

1:21
Eno Sarris: I can’t believe using data to test assertions and then using the things proven by data is unproductive.

1:21
Curtis: Will a new trend be in the “light” beer craft beer market…less calories, lower ABV, same great taste?

1:22
Eno Sarris: Already happening with session IPAs. (I love Lawson’s Super Session, and FW Easy Jack)

1:22
Ethan: I like stouts. Suggestions? I live in Boston if that matters for suggestions.

1:22
Eno Sarris: Trillium’s stouts are really good, even if they’re known for their IPAs.

1:22
Beergraphs vs. Westworld Hosts: Please rank for 2017: Eduardo Rodriguez, Reynaldo Lopez, Jharel Cotton, Robert Gsellman

1:22
Eno Sarris: Cotton, Ed, Gsellman.

1:23
Sonny: you ever drink Bailey’s from a shoe?

1:23
Eno Sarris: …

1:23
Maxamuz: I can’t help but wonder, in light of the news of your Rotographs departure, that Lucas Duda may finally end up hitting the 50+ HRs I’ve been waiting for, for what seems like years now.

1:23
Eno Sarris: love you Maxamuz.

1:24
Roadhog: I have to believe Alonso and Lowrie can still lose their jobs in Spring Training

1:24
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:24
Cason Jollette: My sister named a kitten Kato (after Kato Kaelin) and I convinced her to name it’s brother Marcel. So yeah, now we have two brothers named KATOH and Marcel.

1:24
Matt: What are the Rays’ problems with the Rule 4 draft? They’re always bad and thus always picking high….wait, I figured it out. They’re high when they’re picking. That’s why they’re so bad at it. Thanks, Eno!

1:24
anonymous: There’s something off about that ‘A HUMAN’ guy…

1:25
Ian: Pompey for DooDoo makes sense for Jays, but only after they get some more OF depth somehow. Right now they are too shallow there.

1:25
Eno Sarris: But they’re okay with low-power CF guys, so they could still make the trade. They’ll sign a high-power COF, and my money has always been on jose.

1:26
Nelson: I know its just a silly kids song, but when I smell a fart , are little atoms of poops going into my body?

1:26
Eno Sarris: yeah but when you sleep at night, most nights a bug walks across your face. Think about THAT tonight.

1:26
Matt: Farts bring laughter. And stench. But laughter. Two birds. One stone.

1:26
Roadhog: There is no way Pompey is worth Doolittle, sorry.

1:26
Eno Sarris: If you could guarantee me Doo’s health, maybe not.

1:27
Matt: High Heat just came on. Mad Dog’s coat looks like he’s a door-to-door vacuum salesman circa 1945.

1:27
Maxamuz: I don’t know what a Lude is but I know a dude who booed at his food one time while watching the Dude perform a ravishing rendition of the Vagina Chronicles.

1:28
Eno Sarris: I kinda like when, near the end of the chat, it’s just a melange of weird comments and short questions and exasperation.

1:28
JP: Some of us are making up for the non-farters

1:28
Simon McPherson: I worked out z-scores based on Velo and k/9. Josh Smoker is 7th (only 15 IP though). Who he?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Mets LOOGY I guess.

1:28
LudeBurger: Rank the members of my Eno pitching staff please: Triggs, Perdomo, C Green, Brault, Montgomery (behind Scherzer, Keuchel, and Tyler Anderson).

1:29
Eno Sarris: Montgomery, Triggs, Green (close choice there), perdomo (IP eater at league average).

1:29
EbenezerBatflip: Careful Eno, Rogue One is supposed to be a bit darker and have a bit more emphasis on death and war, might not be 4-year old appropriate

1:29
Eno Sarris: yeah he loves the first three, and they seem so quaint in retrospect. We might do Moanna instead.

1:29
Russell: Do most cheap things taste good together? I had boxed wine with mac and cheese and it was like Moneyball in the kitchen.

1:30
Matt: I work in analytics. Someone on the offshore team created a folder for analysis. The folder is titled “Anal_Files”. How do I approach this?

1:30
Eno Sarris: Re-save a file in it every time it falls out of the top slot ranked by recently saved.

1:30
Beergraphs vs. Westworld Hosts: the fact that the question is “when” will you be going to see Rogue One vs “will” really puts me off….. no consumer decision should be an inevitability.

1:30
Eno Sarris: It’s actually how I feel about Star Wars these days.

1:31
Graver: deep dynasty league, points head to Head

1:31
Eno Sarris: sweet!

1:31
LudeBurger: rodents are an order in the class of Mammalia

1:32
Eno Sarris: Let’s really nail the classification here.

1:32
Beergraphs vs. Westworld Hosts: all humans are primates, not all primates are humans

1:32
Eno Sarris: yes yes I understand this

1:32
Roadhog: Could the A’s end up with McCutchen? Pirates were left awkwardly holding the bag, and most trade partners have dried up.

1:33
Eno Sarris: Apparently they got a random offer from a mystery team, that could’ve been the A’s I bet.

1:33
EbenezerBatflip: Please say 1 nice thing about Joe Kelly

1:33
Eno Sarris: Velo.

1:33
Guest: I don’t love my job. I do love yours. I don’t have any qualifications other than being a baseball fan and having written decent papers back in college. What should I do now to have your job in 5 years?

1:33
Eno Sarris: Write on a blog.

1:33
Country Breakfast: I am ready for your hitting tips Eno

1:33
Eno Sarris: But you’re not in my clubhouse any more!

1:33
Sandy Kazmir: Your description of Rodon sounds a lot like Gio Gonzalez

1:34
omar207: I need to get a more accurate sense of Porcello’s 2017 value…should we believe 2016 was for real? What say you?

1:35
Eno Sarris: He definitely figured out how to use his four-seamer best, but it was upper bounds for him anyway. I think something like 3.75/1.20 is possible.

1:36
Dr Hoist: Eno!! Congrats on the new gig. Going to Honolulu on Saturday. Any good beers, food spots to check out? So excited for the poke.

1:37
Eno Sarris: oh man Sasabune was great. Sushi right next to a bar with a pool table, and you should get the 12-course chef tasters if you can manage it.

1:37
Eno Sarris: Beer? I just went to Whole Foods and Kona while I was there.

1:37
Eno Sarris: But look for Big Island Brewhaus beers and Maui beers.

1:38
Fangraphs vs Puig’s Hose: Will we see Willy Adames in the majors in 2017?

1:38
Eno Sarris: No, they take their time.

1:38
Jax: Everyone in the craft beer industry seems convinced that we’re headed for a “shakeout” ala too many breweries. Do you think that we’re gonna see the market thin out soon?

1:39
Eno Sarris: Something may happen to the breweries that expanded perhaps too early and get pushed out of spots in the store. But your favorite local? They’ll be fine.

1:39
EbenezerBatflip: Can Pablo Sandoval be a 3 WAR player ever again?

1:40
Eno Sarris: yes!

1:40
Frank: imagine a dude threw 95mph with a knuckle- would he be untouchable?

1:40
Eno Sarris: If the arm speed was the same, which might be impossible, yes.

1:40
Tommy Tutone: What do you think happens with R Iglesias? He cant stay as a 7th or 8th inning guy right?

1:40
Eno Sarris: he’ll be the closer.

1:41
Um: Do teams with great pitching staffs have different balances in the offensive and defensive capabilities of their position players?

1:41
Eno Sarris: I don’t know if they always do, but the Mets have seemed to value defense less and have had a staff of really high K guys that don’t allow balls in play, which seems related.

1:42
kevinthecomic: Re: significant other gifts — can’t go wrong with edible underwear!

1:42
You: I feel sad when my questions don’t get answered. LOVE ME ENO

1:42
Eno Sarris: I do!

1:42
Sadwick: Jason Heyward doesn’t have a good name for rhymes. Frustration Jason maybe?

1:42
Fangraphs vs Puig’s Hose: Calyptra by Jack’s Abby is a fantastic session

1:42
Roadhog: Eno, my favorite beer is Corona with lime in it. What have you got for me?

1:42
Eno Sarris: 4Hands has a great lemon gose.

1:42
Fangraphs vs Puig’s Hose: Maine Brewing’s Mean Old Tom is a fantastic stout you can find around New England.

1:44
Fangraphs vs Puig’s Hose: Poop molecules are not volatile however the nasty sulfurous gases that come along for the ride are…..

1:44
Matt: Tell Nelson that his assertion that smelling farts is akin to doing lines of poop off a table has just ruined my day.

1:44
Snarfle: The ludes are coming from inside the house!

1:44
Bork: I thought the whole bug walking on face during sleep thing was a myth. Unless you are a slob like SOME people.

1:44
Matt: Million dollar idea: Air freshener that smells of farts. That way, when you do fart, everyone is already nose blind to it.

1:44
Snarfle: Last night I took off my jeans to settle into the sweat pants part of the evening, but I couldn’t find them, so I just wandered around the house looking for them in my boxers. Never before have I felt so much like an old man. Also, I still don’t know where they are.

1:45
KATOHtonic: Jean Segura true talent level is:______________?

1:45
Eno Sarris: three wins.

1:45
Snarfle: I had this idea for a “movie” when I was younger, that would just be a screen with the words, “Don’t tell everyone else that this isn’t a real movie!” If no one spilled the beans it would be a blockbuster hit.

1:45
Eno Sarris: maybe if there was a highlight real of people getting hit in the crotch below the words.

1:45
Ryan: Josh Smoker is a failed Nationals prospect, pretty sure I saw an article early this year where his velocity came back in a big way after years of injuries.

1:46
Simon McPherson: Actually Smoker is a righty. Smoker is a great name for a closer

1:46
Eno Sarris: says on FG that he’s a lefty huh.

1:46
Daniel Castro Fan Club: The Coors Gods will shower our lord and savior Daniel Castro with a plethora of home runs! He shall smite his enemies with a single swing of his bat. Look upon Daniel Castro, ye NL West, and despair!

1:46
Vin: Are you a believer in a Williamson/Parker platoon for SF this upcoming season?

1:46
Eno Sarris: They’ll sign someone that can play center like De Aza I’d guess.

1:47
Eno Sarris: Do I believe in them? Maybe 1.5-2 wins between them, on the cheap.

1:47
Fangraphs vs Puig’s Hose: Joe Kelly is easily in the top half of the most intimidating pitchers ever to take the mound wearing rec specs

1:47
Kev: Do you like Elysian space dust?

1:47
Eno Sarris: Yes and I’ll buy it at Safeway if I need to.

1:48
tommy lasagna, sr.: i farted at a party but it was shart. i left awkwardly and threw undies out the window. my wife was complicit. call it a push re: complaining about my messy cooking?

1:48
Eno Sarris: you did well.

1:48
Nien Nunb: My favorite part of fangraphs is the fact that the tab says ‘baseball statistics and anal’

1:48
Matt: Eno, today I learned that you seem to be a connoisseur of farts. Relating to that, how do you feel about the leading fart-reduction product on the market rhymes with your name?

1:49
Eno Sarris: BUBBLY BUBBLY BUBBLY ENO

1:49
Snarfle: Do you do a lot of interviews with randomly naked players, or is that a TV myth?

1:49
Eno Sarris: Usually wait for them to get clothed.

1:50
Eno Sarris: Wait! I have to work! Thanks for hanging out!

A rodent is a mammal as well… what an “interesting” comment.

But it is true that a civet is a mammal and not a rodent.
